Just got my gsm nexus and I like it but..... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Last night I updated to the latest ics update so I'm on 4.0.4. I've noticed it shuts off by itself occasionally. Even now at work, phone is laying flat and it shut off once. Also this morning driving to work phone was on my dash and it shut off. Both times phone was in sleep mode and I didn't know it shut off completely until I tried to turn screen on with volume keys or power button. I would then of course have to hold down power button to start phone up again. I haven't rooted or anything , I'm stock. I've tried tapping the back by the battery to see if something was loose but nothing happened.
Maybe some of you guys have experienced the same. Will this go away when I start rooting and romming ,or do I have defective hardware?

So no-one? So far I looked online and someone mentioned putting paper under battery to hold it tighter against contacts? I'm trying that but not sure if it's making battery hotter. I'll see if that works.
Also called Google just in case I have to go through the returning process which I hope not to go through this is what they emailed me for my issue.
" Greetings and salutations,
Thank you for contacting Google. It was my pleasure assisting you today. Many issues can be resolved by performing a hard reset by removing the battery or by factory data resetting your device, but first I'd like you to try removing the battery, wiping it clean with lint free cloth, as well as the prongs that connect to the battery itself. Try this a few times, if it does not work this should. Be sure to backup any personal files you may have on the device.
To factory data reset your device, touch the Settings icon from your ‘Home’ or ‘All Apps’ screen, then select ‘Backup & reset’ under ‘Personal.’
If you're unable to get to your Settings menu, follow the steps below:
1. Power down your device 2. Press and hold both volume keys and the power button to enter Bootloader mode 3. Press the volume keys to cycle to the Recovery mode option 4. Press the power button to select Recovery mode 5. From the Recovery mode screen, press and hold the Power button then press the Volume up button. 6. Use the volume buttons to select wipe data/factory reset. 7. Select Yes -- delete all user data. 8. The factory data reset process will now start. Once its finished, select 'Reboot system now.

I better root and try a Rom asap huh?

I'd say get a replacement for it while you still can.

yeah getting a replacement could be the wisest thing to do
altho if when you received it in 4.0.1 it wasnt randomly shutting then something might've gone wrong with the update so you can unlock your bootloader and flash some ROMs to see how that goes

I definitely want to try some roms before I replace it as I have some time under Samsung's waranty. I also want to gently pull the contacts out a bit with small pliers to see if it holds the battery better. I'll even clean the contacts.
Man I'm hoping it's software ...

Gently pull the contacts out? Wouldn't that void your warranty? I'd be careful with the hardware if I were you.

Unless your battery contacts on the phone are smashed/deformed, it is unlikely that the battery connection is being physical broken at the contacts. The battery fits fairly snug in the compartment and the contacts stay touching even when the battery is partially removed. Probably no benefit to placing a piece of paper in there. Also keep in mind your NFC is in the battery.
I am also using a "Yakju" device from Google Play. No similar issue on 4.0.4 stock or CM9. At least not this nightly build : )

I actually got the GSM nexus yesterday and I had the exact same problem. The phone powered itself off twice. Once right after I turned it on and again about two hours later. Both times it occurred when I was moving around with the phone.
I pulled the battery and popped it back in a few times and it hasn't happened since.

You guys are probably right. The battery does already feel snug in there.
As I'm reading through forums for my issue, I can't believe how many sgn users are experiencing the same thing I am, some even reboots. Alot of them think it's apps. Good chance I'll exchange for the another device with same issue. I'm starting to wonder if this is why Google dropped the price.
Can't wait to get home and mess with this more. Hopefully I can make it go away.

I had this same problem when I first got mine with random reboots an powering off by itself, after about 2 weeks the problem went away, don't ask me how it seem to magically go away by itself maybe because battery needed time to settle in with the charging process.

I'm happy to report, knock on wood, that after I factory reset the phone the problem seems to have gone away. Last night I used the toolkit to unlock bootloader and root, and I flashed cm9 nightly and all is good so far. My only problem now is I dont know which rom to try next
I definitely want something with led customizations like cm9 has, thats just so old school reminds me of a blackberry .
Any suggestions, I guess I can also ask elsewhere.

I use light flow. It also lets me customize both LED and audio notification per app

I had light flow going when my phone would shut itself off. It doesnt include alot of the apps I use to customize so I'm not the biggest fan of it now. I think the cm9 led customizations is sufficient as it lets you add any of your apps regardless.

Aokp has more features and is most popular so you could try that. Then try paradigm rom. I done use light flow, I just have a few led colors from stock and its enough for me for now. Google voice green, handcent texts blue, and Gmail and calls white. All from the stock apps.

Black ice is good so far. So many different variations of aokp roms I guess, its hard to recommend the "best" one.

Phone rebooting like crazy...help

I literally have never had a problem like this with this phone, but just recently I flashed the new AOKP jb 8-29 build and after a day or two of using it I started getting random reboots where the phone would crash and then start vibrating in intervals. I couldn't get it to stop unless I pulled the battery. Thinking this was just a bug with the rom, I just rebooted to recovery and wiped and flashed the latest jedi mind trick v7. I let the phone sit for a little bit after first boot, but when I then tried to go through the setup I got the exact same problem. Now the phone crashes like this every time I boot up and even while I'm in recovery mode! Someone please help if you know what might be causing this.
EDIT: Now it's doing this every time I put the battery back in; I can't turn on the phone or go into recovery while it's vibrating like this
Sound like a faulty power button. I've seen many, many threads like yours. Almost certain that's the case. Mobiletech offers a power button service. Check them out

I think you're right because before every time I put in the battery the phone would turn on, but I tapped the power button a few times to loosen it up and put the battery in and it didn't turn on. Is there any way to remote start without having to touch the power button that you know of? Thanks for the advice btw
This same scenario happened to me just yesterday morning. I researched it and this issue does seem to be popping up more frequently among Samsung phones. Maybe power button design is faulty and they're starting to wear out now after a year plus of use? I sent mine off to MobileTechVideos today to be fixed. I feel so lost without my phone!

What I've read is no. Its not the button its self, but the circuits behind the button that mess up. Unless you are really skilled at soldering and can re wire the board, I don't see that happening.

problems with a refurb

hey all-
youve been a great community since ive been around (last december) and i was wondering if anyone had any insight on a problem im having.
I recently got a replacement phone that is refurbished from sprint, because the power button on my old e4gt was completely stuck
when i got the phone i immediately rooted it and went to my usual set up of Blazer 4.1 with the rogue 1.4.1 kernel.
since then ive been having some trouble:
the touchscreen is very wonky, ill be in the middle of texting and it will all of a sudden start selecting things all over the screen. simply turning the screen off and then back on usually works, but ive noticed that the frequency of this is increasing. also the menu home back and search keys all pick and choose when they want to work, and when they dont. sometimes ill press them and they wont work, other times ill be browsing the web and the menu button will start going off and on, without me pressing it.
ive also been experiencing quite a few random reboots, this wouldnt be such a problem however sometimes the phone will just shut off, with the red led light still on, but the screen wont come on when i press the power button. ive also noticed that sometimes the phone will randomly reboot, and then hang on the samsung screen. this has happened a few times at night and caused me to miss class because my alarm didnt go off (lol). when any of this happens i just hold down the power and vol up button to reboot into recovery, and then reboot the phone from there.
the only visible difference i can tell is that under the build number it says: "Blazer v4.1 ~ PI:FG-X^2I^2
i dont remember the last part of that being in any of the previous build numbers; ive been running this build pretty much since it came out, theres just something about the speed, snapiness, and battery life of this gb build that has me hooked.
if anyone knows if these problems are hardware related, or if i just had a bad flash, id greatly appreciate your feedback.
i know this has turned into a long post, but i just have one more question:
i use google play music as my music player, and absolutely love it. my favorite part about it is the fact that i can "download" songs to stay available even when i dont have a data connection, this comes in reallyyyy handy. HOWEVER, i use titanium backup to backup my apps, and when i flash to a new rom and restore play music, it restores all my music, but not the music that i have stored on the device. this is annoying because i then have to wait for a stable wifi connection to download the 500 or so songs that i usually keep on the device. My question is whether or not there is a way to backup all of the cached music, or if i could move the app+app data to my sd card, so i wouldnt have to redownload all the songs when i flash a new rom.
again youve all been a great community and im thankful for all the devs and all the work they do. i apologize for this post being so long, i dont usually post much but when i do ive always gotten the solutions for the problems ive had.
have a great day everyone, and you stay classy san diego
replace
put the phone back to stock and see if these problems still occur. If the do still occur then take it into a service center and have it replaced

i wish i could take it to a service center however when i had the battery out of it someone spilled water on the battery so the water damage sticker is now red even though the water never got on the phone.
Brick it and get a new one. They messed up.

A service center should take the phone apart and check the sticker in the inside. You could also just buy a battery from amazon and use that when taking it in.

Buy a new battery and send that back with the phone if you continue to have issues

[Q] [D2LTE] CM11 Sudden Death issue

Hey All,
I'm currently on the CM11 04/22 nightly, and have made it all the way up to the 04/27 nightly to try and resolve this issue and have not been able to. Basically - the sudden death issue has been hitting me very hard - I can't use my phone at all.
I understand the 04/11 nightly is stable and doesn't have this issue, howevery CyanogenMod does not have this on their website.
Does anyone have this install available? (CM-11-Nightly-20140411-D2LTE.zip)
Thanks so much in advance

I'll be using the phone (say checking my Instagram or reading a book on Play Books) and the screen may be on for about 5-6 minutes. The phone will suddenly shut off on its own. I'll start it up and then shut down again when the phone is loading. It will also sometimes say it has 1-2% battery when it really has 45% (which is what it shows when I plug the phone in).
Hope this clears it up.

I had the same issue a week back. Was the most frustrating thing ever...
I finally narrowed it down to the power button. It actually had to do with the power button switch which is soldered to the motherboard. The power button was super sensative, therefore being engagded at all times, causing the phone to hard shutdown every time I tried to turn the phone on.
How I fixed it:
1. Opened my phone up
2. Broke the switch off
3. Done
Now I use my phone without a functioning power button but it was a quick and free fix so it doesnt bother me.
If I decide to do so in the future, I can also solder a new switch back and get the power button working again.
DO NOTE: This might now be the issue you may be facing, so do your research
Finally, I watched this YT video which showed me how to break the power button switch and eventually fix my phone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Glllc7bEJs
Good Luck

I'm fairly confident that this isn't the power switch. And if it were I'm not sure how comfortable I would feel breaking the power switch off.
The thing that begs me to think this is a software issue is that I'll have 45% battery, the phone will die, and then I'll try to turn the phone on again only for it to tell me I have 1% battery left. I'll put the phone on charge (after it dies again) and it will say charging - 45%.
Anyway I've rolled back a few updates and it seems to be fairly usable now...
Try cleaning the USB port real well and don't use a cheap cable. Use a needle and make sure there is no lint packed in there. These things can cause the phone to cycle itself even when not plugged in. I've fixed several doing exactly what you describe.

[Q] Weird problem with screen-HTC One X

Hello,
I was looking through the XDA, but haven't found anything similar, so I hope somebody could have an idea what could it be.
First of all, phone is HTC One X-32GB International version.
Few days ago, I noticed that after some idle time, my HOX touch screen becomes unresponsive. At first, I didn't pay too much attention, because everything was fine after restar by power button, but problem continued to repeat.I thought it could be because of the heavy use, so I started to disable app by app but nothing changed.I restarted it several times after that and noticed that if I try side buttons, they show volume is going up and down when I press them. Also a big screen clock is normally working, so my next guess was that maybe a factory reset would solve the problem, but it didn't.
So what i shappenintg?
When I surf the net,or dialling numbers,or whatever else, everything works fine to the moment I stop touching it and leave it idle for a while. After few minutes, screen is unresponsive, doesn't matter if I put screenlock on or of.I can't even answer the call when it rings.Everything looks just as it should look, but is unresponsive.Except side buttons. Then again I have to restart it with long press power button. If I don't touch the screen after phone restarts, after minute or two it goes to unresponsive state again.
I hope somebody has idea what could or what should I do.
Thanks in advance
*update
Sometimes helps if I press power button...
*update 2
Now it's not helping any more if I press power button, seems that power button is not reacting at all sometimes, only if I hold him long enough to restart it.
In fact, now even restart is not helping.
I'm sorry, what ROM do you have? And do you have sweep2wake function on? 'cause I also have had problems with touch, when s2w was on, but I am not sure, what was the ROM that time...

It's a stock ROM-And sweep2wake is not on.
Have no idea what else to try.I tried to unlock bootloader, put CWM in because you can control it with buttons, made a backup of everything to USB, format everything, put everything back, but problem is still here. Now I also noticed that it has a delay when push power button for example when I press it screen goes off immidiately, but when I press it again, sometimes it takes 20 seconds just to turn screen on again. And of course, it still not reacting.
Now my last hope is that a ROM became corrupted somehow,so I will try to delete everything, and put some other ROM in.
Since, I am a noob, there will be a lot reading for me .
Everything wiped, unboxed ROM on, and a problem still persists.
Newest discovery:if I twist upper right corner a little bit, everything works fine.

Open up your phone and check the connector for the digitizer is properly connected, even remove it and blow into the connector to make sure there's no dust causing problems.
You can test the screen response before putting the back cover on again, its pretty easy and there are videos on YouTube showing how to remove the back, good luck.

[noob inside] - Screen unlocking problem, faulty device or android bug ?

Hey there guys , I've been searching through the forum topics about my issue but so far I've found nothing close to my scenario.
A few months ago I bought my first HTC phone (M8). Its a great device for sure , despite the fact that I had to return it back twice.
First time it was a faulty microphone , so they sent me back a brand new device. Great isn't it ?
However recently I've noticed a few .... let me call them 'glitches' .
Let me give you some details on what I've experienced with the device:
Despite the issues that i'm going through ... the phone works great, but...
Sometimes the screen wont turn on when I'm receiving incoming calls (same goes for the alarm clock) but the phone is able to recognize touches - i've managed to pick up the call when I swiped the screen in the area where the "green" answer button appears .
The above issue doesnt happen so often but the thing that bothers me is the unlocking issue.
At first I thought that it was stuck or faulty power button.
When the phone is idle for some time and I pick it up and press the unlock button ... nothing seems to happen I've tried pressing it hard ... i've tried pressing it gently ... i've tried pressing it multiple times until the screen wakes up .
Same goes for motion launch unlocking .
When I use motion launch to unlock it the phone only gives me a vibration feedback ... and thats it until I try harder to bring the screen back to ''life'' .
(I can also press my security pattern buttons while the screen is dead and feel the phone vibrating , BUT NOT ALWAYS , sometimes is just .. dead )
I already sent the phone back describing the same problems and they just flashed the firmware , which did not fix any of the issues.
Stock Rom android 5.0.1 , not rooted
Soo what do you guys think? What can I do next .. is it android bug or a faulty unit ?
is it possible to be a sensor problem (proximity , accelerometer)
Already tried factory reset and dalvik cache wipe.
Any advice would be useful.
Thanks for taking your time .
Cheerz
I have the same issue. There are times it takes me hitting the power button 20 times for it to finally light up but I can press buttons with it black. The weird thing is it does it on every single ROM but I havent noticed it on Stock...maybe I'm not using stock enough to see. I'll probably throw stock on there today and take it into sprint and let them replace it.
I have the same problem whether it's on stock or custom ROM (KK or L). I am pretty sure this is a hardware problem. Unfortunately, my m8 is out of warranty so HTC won't fix it for free. I read it some where that it could be a faulty proximity switch so shining a light beam to the top part of the phone may wake up the screen. I haven't tried it yet because every time it happens, I don't have a flash light handy. It is an annoying problem to say the least.
When this happens, I pushed the power button, the volume up button, and swiping the screens. Eventually the screen would wake up and every thing works fine... until the next time.
Its a ****ing pain in the ass.
however none of the sensor reading apps report a faulty/stuck sensor.
the wors thing... I've already sent my phone for repair, describing the problems in details. .. and it took them a whole f*cking month to bring it back to me with no results.
I don't think they will replace it because its a problem that takes time to be experienced...and no one is going to wait for it to happen. ...
Any other ideas?
Should I wait for android 6.0 or should I try a custom rom too see if these problems presist.
Fml I love the phone but this is frustrating.
I have the same problem I think. I just bought an M8 on Ebay. I am S-off, unlocked and rooted, using the Viper Rom currently. I have also tried AICP, the stock Tmobile Rom and a few others. Same issue.
If I double tap, I feel the screen vibrate, but nothing comes on. Then, I keep pushing power button a few times. Sometimes it comes on and sometimes I am too impatient to wait, so I just hold power and volume up.
I also know that the phone internals come on, because after that vibration, I swipe up and push the screen a few times. Then, when I am fiddling with the power button and it does come on, I do see that there is an app already on the screen.
I think this is a rare issue, as I haven't even been able to find many posts regarding this. I may have to get a new one if this keeps going on so bad.

I am experiencing the exact same issue with my M8. I have seen a lot of people stating it may be a hardware fault related to heat and internals but something about how it reacts seems software related.
I really hope someone who has fixed or uncovered the reason comes forward. At this rate I may be switching back to a S4 LTE-A.

I think it IS hardware related. I was able to return that one and got another M8. No problems at all.
