Hi,
I'm having the (common?) problem, that the power button doesn't work any more. You can press it as long or often as you want, it doesn't do anything.
So -- big mistake -- I took of the battery and tried to restart. But the power button seems to be broken (hardware), so I now cant even turn on the phone to make it connect to e.g. adb...
Is there any way, to get the phone (without using the power button :/) able to talk to the adb / fastboot interface? (or better, boot it completely)
Need to get some data off it before sending it in for replacement..
thanks !
take the battery out and plug into usb (connected to computer). put the battery back in and when you see the battery charging on the screen remove the battery again. On mine the battery image starts flickering. at that point i put the battery back in and it rebooted.
This has worked for me a few times. Once rebooted you will be able to see your device using adb and then fastboot.
i got the idea from this post but found the timing i used worked better than his random attempts while holding the x key on the nexus one.

I've been searching the web for days looking for a way to turn on my Galaxy Nexus without using its broken power button, and your timing trick got it working. Thanks!
Thank you, i searched for a whole night during my night shift for this and it worked, lets hope i won't turn it off again :fingers-crossed:
Rooted?
If you have a rooted phone you can use AOKP ROM or any other roms that has volume wake in its settings. If your kernel supports it you can do what I did and use PGM Nexus from the market, basically what it does is let you lock and unlock your screen by swiping from left to right and right to left for each action (it keeps your touch controls on even when the screen is off and it doesn't use that much battery ) Hope this helps.

Is there some trick here guys? My phone has a busted power button and I need to get some data off it before repairing. I've tried this timing method but it doesn't seem to do anything. A charging icon shows up, I pull the battery and replace it, and then the full icon shows up and eventually disappears.
if you go to the phones main settings, security, lockscreen, then press none, youll be able to wake the device with the volume buttons. its a built in feature, no app needed.

I love you mate. Now I can use my phone again.
Oh thank God it WORKS! thanks to you man, your post is really helpful. thanks to everyone who have shared this idea!
Let me explain in detail how it works on mine:
1. battery pulled (if possible, the battery shoulldn't be too full to allow the charging animations to appear)
2. connect phone to usb that is connected on pc (without the battery inserted) n wait like 1 or 2 seconds before inserting the battery
3. insert the battery now
4. wait for the battery lightning logo to appear
5. once appeared, wait for the battery lightning logo to disappear (it took me almost 10 seconds.. might vary with yours)
6. once the battery lightning logo disappear, wait for the charging animation to appear (almost instant)
7. when the charging animation appears, kindly pull the battery now.. hehe.. it doesn't matter if you wanna pull it immediately after the charging animations appear or not as long as the animation is still playing..
8. this is the point where it should work or not:
A: sometimes the animation will continue to loop 3 times n nothing happen. Repeat process from step 1.
B: there's a split second static lines on the screen (static as in the iPhone 5 keyboard static) and then the battery animation got stuck. just wait. n then it turns off. n then it vibrates. n then, it boots! =D
P/S: This is NOT MY GNex. My GNex is fine right here with me. The GNex in description here belongs to my friends' aunt. she bought the phone based on my recommendation. the phone is only 4 months old. Mine is 7 months old. luckily the phone is still in warranty so she'd be able to get it fixed soon for free. I'm gonna give the phone back to her so that she could backup every single pictures n videos coz she never did any sort of backup since the phone was bought.. *gasp*
IMPORTANT!
since i have my own GNex, I emptied my battery (i left it only around 10% or so) n put it in her GNex so that the charging animations will appear when i try to revive it using the method above. coz before this, her GNex's battery was full n once the battery lightning logo disappear, only the battery full logo appears afterwards, meaning no animations is shown. n i don't know whether this affects anything at all. just thought i'd mention it. =)
actually I didn't even know the power button is problematic. I thought it was bricked or something. i've even used the omapflash thingy.. lol.. i even considered the odin method n stuff.. luckily i came across this thread..
thanks again everyone.
=)
please!!

Thanks a million, man. You totally saved my bacon with this trick. :good:
My Galaxy Nexus is up and running again after about 5 minutes of pulling and inserting the battery I finally got it booted up.
My power button's been broken for a few weeks and I installed an app to turn my screen on using the VOL button but I was out all day today and made the mistake of letting my battery completely die and of course it powered down - OOPS.
Guess I'd better get that power button fixed.

I followed the same basic procedure (thanks!), but wanted to add a couple notes.
1) I wasn't having much luck after step 8 until I actually put the battery back in as suggested by the second post in the thread -- that seems to trigger the boot process more consistently.
2) If the process is not working, try a different USB cable. I tried a number of times with one cable to no avail, then finally got desperate enough to try another cable, and it worked the very first time.
3) Once the phone is actually booted, here are a couple other apps that can help with the lack of functioning power button:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.ponury.pgm2free --- For those who are rooted, you can use this (or the paid version with more features) to slide your finger across the turned-off screen to wake the phone. It can be a little finicky in my experience, sometimes pressing the volume button after swiping seems to do the trick:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock -- Lets you turn off the screen via a shortcut; I have a shortcut on my home screen and in my notifications.

Hey Guys,
I have a S3 AT&T and it just keeps turning on and off by its self about every 20 seconds. I have looked around and many people have this issue and there are a few solution out there but all of those solutions need my phone to stay on for a while. I can't do a hard reset and I can't do any kind of flash because it stays on for such a short time. Also the phone does not have water damage.
Below are the steps I have tried so far.
-Tried a new battery but same issue
-Thought maybe the power button was stuck but it looks fine.
-Tried to do hard reset and flash but does not stay on long enough
Not sure what else to do. Its killing me that I cant figure out how to fix it!! THERE MUST BE A WAY!
Thanks everyone!

Yes it even in the download and recovery menu it does this.
I'm having this exact same problem. Even in download mode it'll reboot. In fact, even while rebooting it reboots. I was lucky in that it stayed in download mode long enough for me to ODIN back to stock, but it's still rebooting. Completely unusable because it never stays on long enough. Can anyone help?
Did it ever take a dive off the table or your hands?

Honestly, it seems to me as if the power button is stuck somehow. It doesn't look stuck to me, but the behaviour of the phone is like that. The constant rebooting, the way the screen turns on, and even how the power off menu randomly comes up by itself.

Mine has fallen before but nothing serious I'v dropped phones way worse then this. But I do think something is definitely loose. If I just leave the phone alone it doesn't power on or off. But as soon as I pick it up and move it, it powers on then in 20 seconds just goes off again.
Anyone have any idea what could be loose maybe?
Thanks

your best bet is too open up the phone and look at the connectors from the batter to the phone and make sure that those have a solid connection.
99% it is a power button failure. I as well as many others are suffering from this.
Try to avoid using the power button as much as possible. Use the home button to power on and find a softkey to turn your screen off. Easiest way is use quick toggles to turn off screen.

What preceded the 'black screen?'
I assume you're Rooted.
Can you get into Recovery?
To get into Recovery:
Power down device.
Don't turn on
Press Power & Vol up buttons at same time
Release when device vibrates and you see Blue Recovery booting words in left upper corner.
Wipe cache, dalvik cache and boot.
If that doesn't work,
Flash Nandroid backup
If you don't have a Nandroid backup, Factory Reset, wipe cache & dakvik cache
If that doesn't work,
Go to ODIN/Download mode, and install Samsung Stock Firmware via ODIN.

What preceded the black screen?
What were the events leading to the black screen?
Installing something, trying something new, jumping into a pool forgetting the deviceuisuin youropocket, stuff like that.. The info can help determine what is going on.
You're not rooted is ok.
The fact that some stuff is working is good.
After you answer the above, you can:
Power down phone.
Make sure the battery has at least 50% charge.
If you can't see the stats and think you may be low on juice, pluguin the device for an hour andlet charge.
After you are charged, you're going to go into the he stock recovery
By doing the following:
Power down device
Press Power & Vol up buttons at same time.
Release buttons when you see the blue words in upper left corner of screen and feel the Vibrate.
Using the volume buttons, scroll up or down to Factory Reset
Press Power button to confirm
Let the screen go through its stuff
Then you will choose reboot and enter it with the Power button.
It'll take 15-20 minutes sometimes, so just wait and see if you're device boots.
If the above fails to boot your device successfully, you'll have to ODIN Samsung Stock Firmware via your pc.

Ohhh.....
Hold off on the above instructions.
Do you have another battery you can try?
Or a friend whose battery you can try?
Edit:
But you can hear and adjust the volume, it's just the screen is black.
That would lead me to believe the battery is good.
Hopefully there is no internal damage form a bad car charger, etc.
Just thinking out loud.
Perhaps try the Recovery steps above after charging the battery.

If you attempted to get into stock recovery following the proper procedure without success, I'd try one more time.
If failure repeats, try to boot the device into ODIN/Download mode by:
Power down device
Don't power up
Press Power & Vol DOWN buttons this time.
Hold the buttons until the device boots into ODIN mode, usually just a few seconds.
Let me know.

I'm not 100% ccertain, but it appears your screen is shot. May not be the screen itself, but the circuitry that lights the screen.
How that happened I'm not 100% certain, but it would appear that it has something to do with car charging the device.
I went through as much troubleshooting as I know, but without the display, I don't know how to get into Recovery or ODIN, which most likely is a moot point because the issue is most likely not software related, but hardware related.
Hopefully I'm wrong
Just a heads up...when you use a car charger to charge your phone its highly recommended to unplug it as soon as its charged. I believe thats what caused your problem.

As I mentioned, I'm not sure it's the digitizer assembly that is bad or the circuitry that operates the digitizer screen assembly or both.
I'd say a digitizer/screen assembly replacement with Samsung OEM parts, including labor may be approx. $175 give or take a few bucks. Would have to check.
The reputable installer would have to specify that you won't be charged if the replacement doesn't work out. Which is obvious anyway.
I'd go to a place in person, and wait for it to be done, if that's possible in your area.
I'd also just say that my screen just stopped working. Let him determine what's up, before be he does anything.
On the other hand, maybe let the tech knows what you think the cause of the issue is, although no one is 100%. Yeah, just tell him what happened.
You plugged the phone into a car charger overnight, and in the am, the screen didn't illuminate.
Maybe it's not the screen and something more simple, maybe.
The tech would also be able to troubleshoot the device more effectively.

Thinking that it might be a battery problem, I left it plugged in all night. But still nothing.

I have an ATT LG G3 yesterday it the phone suddenly won't turn on. It was on with mostly full battery and now won't turn on and is competley unresponsive. When I plug it in, no charging light comes on. Additionally I tried the hard reset by holding down power and down volume key; this gave me nothing.
Thinking that it might be a battery problem, I left it plugged in all night. But still nothing.
Any ideas?

I have the same problem..have you found a solution aside from bringing the phone to the service center? I would appreciate your help.
Thanks!

I had the same problem and pulling the battery wasn't cutting it. This worked for me:
1. Take out the battery
2. WITH THE BATTERY OUT OF THE PHONE AND NOT PLUGGED IN, press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
What this does is it drains all the power stored in the phone and takes the power source away so the phone can fully reboot and refresh the power cycle.
3. Replace he battery and plug in the phone to the OEM LG Charger that came with the phone.
4. Let the phone charge for about 15 minutes then try to turn it on.
This worked for me but some phones are DOA being the phones are still in early production. It takes a few months before they work out all the Kinks.
I figured I'd add my two cents. I had the same issue with my D851 (T-Mobile) version. I was copying a file over my from computer and halfway through the phone shut off. I thought the screen timed out, but it wouldn't turn back on. I pulled the battery, tried holding the power button without the battery for 60 seconds, putting the battery back in, charging without the battery... nothing. The LED would never light, and the phone would never turn on. I contacted LG and it's currently on its way back to them for replacement.
I work for a wireless service provider and not only sell this phone but own one. I also had the problem and unfortunately the battery out power combo did not work for me either and swapping the battery was to no avail. I have seen one other DOA as well. I have noticed the new LG models have had some significant flaws and lemons when they've first come out but I feel the specs and price you get are worth the risk so if this does happen to you I wouldn't throw in the towel on LG quite yet. However the way LG reacts to this will speak volumes to the company's overall success in the industry.

what would happen if I tried returning my phone with root and another rom on it and it won't turn on?
I tried manually going to twrp but went to recovery instead, restarted phone and now it won't turn on. I've tried the suggestions in this thread to no avail.
Won't turn on
My LG G3 D855 first had this problem of restarting on its own when I play with its camera and while restarting, the phone is getting warmer. And now, it wont turn on. I press the power button while it is off, it tried to turn on until the LG logo screen and then it shuts down on its own and restarting non-stop until that LG logo screen and turning off again. When I plugged in a charger, it manages to turn on but only to the pass code part and then it turns off again and the battery charging screen when phone is turn off, is displayed. The battery showed was higher than the battery showed when during the pass code stage. Is it the battery problem? I haven't send the phone to be check yet, I hope its the battery..
Clearing phone
My won't turn on either. I filed an insurance claim and am getting a new one. But I have to send my old phone in. I was wondering how I can get all my info off of the old phone before I turn it in. I don't want some one to get my info that is on that phone. How do I clear it all with it not turning on. Is there a hard drive from the phone I can remove?

The plan: Put the phone into recovery and then push " power on".
The method: To get into recovery, push power and volume down together until you see "system recovery" ( it will take a while- maybe more than a minute) and touch "continue power up" by depressing the power key.

h! i have rooted my G3 and insatll TWRP it works .. but when i press volume down+power button it wont boot to recovery. ? i can easilt boot to recovery using ADB .. but how can i boot to recvery using power and voulme keys ..
http://lgg3root.com/lg-g3-root-tutorials/how-to-manually-boot-into-cwmtwrp-recovery-on-lg-g3/ Said better than I can. Be sure that you are firmly pressing both on the power and volume down keys, at the same time, don't give up- To be sure I have constant pressure, I take off the case. I do this each time I restart the phone.
Oh awesome. I was browsing the web having the same problem and this totally fixed it for me. Cheers!

Just wanted to say this worked for me. Thanks.
Hey there. I am new to XDA.
My tablet last night was just fine! Everything was working perfectly and i played a few games before i went to sleep. Anyhow, Today afternoon i trying to wake up the screen of my tablet and it doesn't even turn on the screen! I put it in to charge but nothing happens. The only thing that happens is that is getting warm at the back because of charging.
So overall, last night was working, today is not even turn on.
p.s: Few weeks back i try to root my tablet and i didn't make it. I had the problem "Firmware upgrade encountered and issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again" But i managed to recover to fully factory settings all over again.
Thanks
Try this tool:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...&_nkw=usb+current+and+voltage+tester&_sacat=0
Make sure the current should be ~ 1,7 Amps, voltage should be ~ 5.2 Volts.
There are many unknowns: bad charger or bad USB cable or bad USB charging port.
You should use another known working USB cable or charger to test. Another micro USB cable can be used to charge or 5 Volts to 5.3 Volts charger.
If you tablet is charging, press the HOME button it should show a green battery icon.
The problem is not with the charger, its with the software I guess

Try this:
Press Power+Home+Vol down button.
Now you will enter download mode. Use the volume keys, and navigate to Reboot Device. Press the Power key to select
Now your device should reboot

I tried the power, home, down thing also the power, home,up nothing happens. As i told when i try to charge the tablet the back of the tablet was getting warmer, a sign that says its charging. BUT the screen does not open with the battery on it.. Basically it doesn't turn on at all.
Tried that
Also tried that too.. But i think the voltage its alright i think and also i use my 7 months old original charger that came with the tablet. So the chances are so few.

Another way if you cannot see anything, try of using HDMI adapter to connect to your TV. Signs of your tablet is running: vibration at start up, sounds of start screen or menu and back buttons light up. If you see these signs, probably the LCD cable is disconnected or loose. But how do you know your tablet is charging ? The charger or cable is working but the USB charging port doesn't work, you'll have a dead battery. There are too many unknowns you're even not sure, then others cannot guess what is wrong. First thing first, you need to know if your tablet is charging, then you will figure out what is next.
Nothing!

Hey there.. Thanks for the help!
I know that is charging because the back of the tablet is getting warmer when i charge it. Also no back keys or nothing is showing up. I tried everything. The only thing i didnt try is the HDMI thing. Plus the tablet is in full silence. no vibration or anything. i dont remember if the tablet was vibrating at the turn on. The only thing i got from the tablet since yesterday is nothing. not even a light of the screen or download mode or back light NOTHING so unexpectedly
Thanks!
When the tablet shows no sign of life, the only way to know first if the mainboard is working, is is taking charge ?
The back is warming cannot tell anything. If the battery is dead you cannot go troubleshooting further unless swapping another battery to see if the tablet can turn on. Even with a full charged battery, a defective power button could prevent the tablet turning on.
There are too many unknowns, that's why elimination method have to use to find the source of problem: software or hardware.
The USB current and voltage tester will help you without guessing the working status of your tablet. I have no clues, that's why I'm guessing too.
Not even a clue!

I don't even have a clue. I search the whole internet about this problem and nothing. I will take it back to the store and use the warranty. Thats the best way
Long shot but try this. Unplug the charger. Hold the power button down for a full 20 seconds. Even if the tablet is in a "frozen" state, that should turn it off. Then try turning it on again.
Tried it.
