What preceded the 'black screen?'
I assume you're Rooted.
Can you get into Recovery?
To get into Recovery:
Power down device.
Don't turn on
Press Power & Vol up buttons at same time
Release when device vibrates and you see Blue Recovery booting words in left upper corner.
Wipe cache, dalvik cache and boot.
If that doesn't work,
Flash Nandroid backup
If you don't have a Nandroid backup, Factory Reset, wipe cache & dakvik cache
If that doesn't work,
Go to ODIN/Download mode, and install Samsung Stock Firmware via ODIN.

What preceded the black screen?
What were the events leading to the black screen?
Installing something, trying something new, jumping into a pool forgetting the deviceuisuin youropocket, stuff like that.. The info can help determine what is going on.
You're not rooted is ok.
The fact that some stuff is working is good.
After you answer the above, you can:
Power down phone.
Make sure the battery has at least 50% charge.
If you can't see the stats and think you may be low on juice, pluguin the device for an hour andlet charge.
After you are charged, you're going to go into the he stock recovery
By doing the following:
Power down device
Press Power & Vol up buttons at same time.
Release buttons when you see the blue words in upper left corner of screen and feel the Vibrate.
Using the volume buttons, scroll up or down to Factory Reset
Press Power button to confirm
Let the screen go through its stuff
Then you will choose reboot and enter it with the Power button.
It'll take 15-20 minutes sometimes, so just wait and see if you're device boots.
If the above fails to boot your device successfully, you'll have to ODIN Samsung Stock Firmware via your pc.

Ohhh.....
Hold off on the above instructions.
Do you have another battery you can try?
Or a friend whose battery you can try?
Edit:
But you can hear and adjust the volume, it's just the screen is black.
That would lead me to believe the battery is good.
Hopefully there is no internal damage form a bad car charger, etc.
Just thinking out loud.
Perhaps try the Recovery steps above after charging the battery.

If you can or can't, let me know.

If you can:

If that doesn't work, do the Factory reset I wrote the steps to.

i did the steps you told me hold the volume& up and power and nothing came up. i felt it vibrate but nothing came up. the screen flashes just a little bit

If you attempted to get into stock recovery following the proper procedure without success, I'd try one more time.
If failure repeats, try to boot the device into ODIN/Download mode by:
Power down device
Don't power up
Press Power & Vol DOWN buttons this time.
Hold the buttons until the device boots into ODIN mode, usually just a few seconds.
Let me know.

I'm not 100% ccertain, but it appears your screen is shot. May not be the screen itself, but the circuitry that lights the screen.
How that happened I'm not 100% certain, but it would appear that it has something to do with car charging the device.
I went through as much troubleshooting as I know, but without the display, I don't know how to get into Recovery or ODIN, which most likely is a moot point because the issue is most likely not software related, but hardware related.
Hopefully I'm wrong

Just a heads up...when you use a car charger to charge your phone its highly recommended to unplug it as soon as its charged. I believe thats what caused your problem.

As I mentioned, I'm not sure it's the digitizer assembly that is bad or the circuitry that operates the digitizer screen assembly or both.
I'd say a digitizer/screen assembly replacement with Samsung OEM parts, including labor may be approx. $175 give or take a few bucks. Would have to check.
The reputable installer would have to specify that you won't be charged if the replacement doesn't work out. Which is obvious anyway.
I'd go to a place in person, and wait for it to be done, if that's possible in your area.
I'd also just say that my screen just stopped working. Let him determine what's up, before be he does anything.
On the other hand, maybe let the tech knows what you think the cause of the issue is, although no one is 100%. Yeah, just tell him what happened.
You plugged the phone into a car charger overnight, and in the am, the screen didn't illuminate.
Maybe it's not the screen and something more simple, maybe.
The tech would also be able to troubleshoot the device more effectively.

HTC Wildfire blank screen

Hi,
I'm sorry if this has already been answered I just can't find it.
My Wildfire's screen froze a couple of times, then the last time I removed the battery and reinserted it.
When I tried to power back up I got the vibrate but nothing on the screen, so I repeated a couple of times with no luck.
I then tried the Hboot method (Hold vol - and power) and I got the Hboot on, but when I tried to navigate using the volume buttons nothing happened, so removed battery and tried to repeat, I couldn't get back to Hboot. I have only been able to get the Hboot screen that one time.
When I power up, I get 1 vibrate and nothing on screen.
When I hold volume + and power button, I get three vibrates and the green light comes on.
When I hold volume - and power I don't get any vibrates, unless I remove the volume - then the power button but still only one vibrate.
I've tried installing the CyanogenMod but no luck.
Is there anything that can be done to save my Wildfire?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Seems like you're in Qualcomm Diagnostic mode. Though I don't remember the solution, some Googling might help

I've tried the method stated on this forum but with no luck.
Does anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks!
--- EDIT ---
So you wrote your question again in the "Wildfire S" (Marvel) Forums - in this case the much more important question would be: what phone are you talking about? A Wildfire (Buzz) or a "Wildfire S" (Marvel). Despite the name those have almost nothing in common - they are totally different devices
--- EDIT ---
I'll answer in this thread although you opened another one in Q&A.
You haven't been too specific with your problem but sometimes it helps to have all the details
So here we go:
a) did the phone work correct (besides the freezes) before you took out the battery?
b) is your WF rooted & s-off?
c) which ROM?
d)
When I hold volume + and power button, I get three vibrates and the green light comes on

does this happen when connected to PC or charger or not
e)
When I hold volume - and power I don't get any vibrates, unless I remove the volume

OK, sorry for the lack of info!
My phone is a Wildfire, not a WildfireS.
A: Yes, was working.
B: No, never needed to.
C: Not sure, never kept a record of it. It's one of the first models though if that helps.
D: This happens without USB cord attached. When the USB cord is attached I pull the battery and the green light stays on.
E: Yes, I've tried this for over 10secs before.
F: Yes, after blank screen. I installed on SD card and followed the directions. Bare in mind, I cant set Debug or the charge only setting.
Thanks!

That's what I thought. In this case you won't be able to flash any other ROM - you could just do the usual upgrades by HTC
This doesn't sound to me to be a minor problem (but probably someone else might correct me here) - nevertheless - just to make sure: have you tried to do a hard factory reset following the HTC user guide?
- With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button (instead of holding it)
if this boots your phone up:
- Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button.
- Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE, and then press POWER.
- Press VOLUME UP to start the factory reset
(errm and yes: this will delete all your user data, of course...)

But I assume you have done that anyway - did you try to connect your phone to the PC (HTC drivers installed, of course)?
How about charging - does the phone seem to behave normal - i.e. if you keep it from charging for a few hrs does it show the red LED for charging mode and the green one for being fully charged?
That's pretty much all I could suggest from scratch. - Hopefully someone else with a good idea will step in here :fingers-crossed:
OK, still have the Wildfire with the annoying blank screen.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a fix?
Thanks!

besides the suggestion of the Qualcomm diagnostic mode (no I don't know anything about that): did you try to power up without the sdcard, yet?
Furthermore I slightly remember that you could do a factory reset using a key combination - but I'm not sure about it.
Same goes for a RUU. Are you able to connect to the phone with the PC?
Really just random guessing - hard if no error messages appear...
Yes, tried with the SD card.
Because I can't see the screen I tried it loads of times, all with different combinations.
I can't get any vibrate from volume down + long hold power.
I will only get a vibrate from volume down + short hold power.
What would be ideal if there's a way to use ODIN PC to flash a new ROM, well that's what I think it is, faulty ROM?
Thanks!

really hard to say as there's not a little information what's going on. What if just the screen is dead? have you tried to wait after boot and insert your pin after a while (I mean try to guess where the numbers might be) and call your number?
Why anyone want's to use ODIN on non-samsung?!
ODIN is purely just for SAMSUNG products
If you have warranty.. put it to service centre.. they will fix it
Need hard reset power off your phone press volume DOWN and power. YOU WILL FIX IT EASYLI.

Hey there!
I'm bumping this because I have the same problem and creating a new thread seemed more bad to me.
Anyway, I'll start from the beginning.
I found out my battery was swollen 5 days ago. It's probably because of my charging habits. My battery life have shortened everyday this 5 days. Yesterday morning I wiped my battery stats to get a better battery life. When I was back home my phone's battery has depleted while I was listening to music.
I came to home, plugged my phone to charge and waited 15 mins to get it charged a bit to open. When I tried to open it, it vibrated but the "green htc text on white background" screen didn't come up. The screen wasn't working. I tried what is said before in this tried. Once I got managed to see the bootloader but the volume keys weren't working (as above) After some moments of rage, my brother offered to test the touch, I opened the phone, (as I dont have a PIN) we waited for some minutes and then he called me. I mimiced the answering gestured and boom, I could talk with my brother.
I bought a new screen as I think screen is broken. But it could be because mainboards screen part is damaged (probably because of my faulty battery, voltage wavings etc.) or something completely different.
Please guys help me. I can't buy a new phone atm so I have to fix this

Ouch sounds like a rough one :/ OK so you have no visual, but do have touch and audio? Are you s-off or s-on? You could try to "blind feed" the rom.zip of a ruu to the bootloader to try restore it. But it may well be that your battery has killed the screen. Have you ordered a new battery?

I too think that it was the battery that killed the screen. Ordered both a screen and a battery but they won't be coming before 20 days at least. Damn you China, why you have to be that far.

I need help s2 acting up

This has probably been resolved or mentioned before so please do not flamed me up. Just needing some quick help.
This is not my device this is a friends. He had a darkside V8 Rom which me and him thought are giving him issues. The phone will literally reboot by itself and vibrate during boot up. Never seeing the home screen again. Only way to remedy this is to take out the battery and if we get lucky it will see the home screen again.
Thankfully I was able to boot into recovery and flash the Milestone AOKP MR1 Build and flashed the gapps. I did this sucessfully. So rebooted the device again to make sure everything will be good. Now the phone will only show the samsung logo and black screen with pulses of vibrations every second. I tried plugging it in and it doesn't even turn on just vibrates. Only when I take out the battery then it will actually turn on,but just the samsung logo followed with the black screen and pulsating vibrations.
Is the phone done? Is it perm bricked? I can't even go on download mode
EDIT: And yes I did a clean flash. I did all the proper wipe cache/dalvik, factory reset etc. etc.
It sounds like a power button issue. Same symptoms.
If you aren't familiar with the phone because it isn't yours;
They tend to start the boot process as soon as the battery is installed without pressing power. You might be missing the chance to put it in download mode, hold the volume button as you put the battery in. If you want to go from ICS to a 4.2.2 ROM you should ODIN to the latest stock ROM first then re-root , there some radio upgrades that can't be flashed from recovery.

Try taking it apart and cleaning around the power button it could just have junk around it that tricks the phone into thinking that you are constantly pushing the button. Option two buy a download dongle for $5 from ebay to force download and see if it stays on long enough to flash a rom. Finally, it possibly is the old faulty power button situation that is known to happen with the S2 to some people which means it will need to be replaced.

Agreed. This is almost certainly caused by a bad/stuck power (on/off) switch. It's a very common problem on all the US-carrier Galaxy SII phones. (I think the international "i9100" model uses a different type of switch.) You can simulate the issue on a good T989 by holding down the power button when you turn it on - it will reboot and then vibrate every few seconds with a blank screen, until you release the power button.
Some people have had success poking/pulling/cleaning/washing the switch, but replacing it is the only reliable long-term fix.
If you don't have insurance coverage and are out of warranty, you can replace the switch yourself. Several eBay sellers offer replacement power switches for the SGH-T989 Galaxy S2. (about ten bucks). You'll need a steady hand, a fine-tipped soldering iron, and some small solder. A magnifying glass and a bit of paste flux couldn't hurt either.
Or, if you don't have mad soldering skills, a few companies offer mail-in repair service:
- $39: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-Switch-REPAIR-SERVICE-T-Mobile-Galaxy-S2-SGH-T989-Samsung-Fix-Bad-Button-/161028469601
- $45: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-Button-Repair-Samsung-Galaxy-S-Galaxy-S-II-Galaxy-NOTE-MORE-/320910836052
Did u flash correct gapps after flashing the ROM? If the answer to this question is no it could've caused a bootloop in which case u need to reboot into recovery, do a full wipe ( data, system, cache, dalvik ) then flash the ROM then flash gapps, or the power button issue, either way easy fix

Desire HD won't turn on

Hi guys,
yesterday I tried to recover the original ROM for Desire HD. During the process in bootloader, my phone shutdown, and I can't turn it on now, even the bootloader wont run. I think my battery was too low, even tought the phone showed 99% (it happened before, even though the battery was almost dead), and it died during the update. Basically, I'm not able to access any feature right now, I'm not sure, if the phone is charging - when I plug it in, the orange light turns on, but when I unplug, the light stays on. Bootloader won't start, but when I press both volume buttons and power button, the phone vibrates 3 times, green light turns on, and thats all.
If you need more info, please ask.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.
You were recovering official ROM from the RUU? This should not result in your device being bricked.
Please try removing the battery for about 10 seconds, then press Vol Dn+Power button and a partial bootloader showing RUU failed or a similar error should open.
Then connect your phone to your PC and again run the Official RUU Setup.
Hit "Thanks" if I helped you. Also click "Donate to me" on the left if u wanna give something in return

Hi, thanks, nothing happens when I push down volume down and power buttons, even after removing batteries. I believe something is actually happening ,but nothing shows on the screen, because when I push volume down and power, and then I plug in the power cable, the orange light does not turn on, while when I plug it in without the combination, it does turn on.
I think that was an official Rom, because I've used it before, and my phone was not rooted afterwards - I did this successfully two times before. However, I recovered it from SD card (pd98img zip copied on the ssd).
Maybe you can try it...just try let the charge is plug in...n leave it be for a hour maybe...don't try to turn on the phone..
After a hour you can try unplug the charge...and remove your battery first...then put it in again...then try power on with pressing volume down+power button..just let see if this time the phone can go to bootloader or not..
Hope this can help..

yeah. I thought about that, but I dont have any desire hd battery here, and I don't know how to charge this one without the phone.
I appear to be having similar problems with it not turning on. when i plug in the charger i get no orange light atall.. if i leave it plugged in (usually within 1hr to 2) eventually it will boot to custom recovery and from there i can reboot the phone and will boot to android. but it does not last very long atall usually about 30mins. have reset battery stats from recovery but doesnt seem to help.
from what i can find online its dieing but can anyone advise on if it will be the battery or the phone itself???
i have just spent $30 fixing digitizer and lcd in the past month. if it is needing a new battery i will proberbly do that but if not it can go..
hope this may help with your problem or any other....

probably won't help my problem.
but to solve yours, download one of the apps that tells you how much battery health you have. You might also get a pretty good deal on a new battery from ebay

[Q] Help!!! Only on For seconds?

So today my phone started to power it's self off. When I power on it shows the kernel screen for a few secs then powers off. I can boot into Recovery (CWM) and when I select reboot it does the same. If if I boot in to Download Mode, it only stays on a few secs.
Is it the power button? Any ideas?
I'm running the BMS Kernel and C-Rom 6.6. I have had this same rom and kernel for weeks with no issues.

Interesting, I have not had any issue with the battery. I'll look into it. Any way to test without using another battery?
Anything else it could be?
Using CWM built in key test it seems it is the power button, when I touch the power key it reads as if it is being touched multiple times or heklod down. Any Fix without replacing the button?
Not that I know of I have only seen replacing it fixes it
Ive seen several people report that opening it up and jiggling the button can help, but when it does it is only temporary.

It's fairly easy to replace. You can buy a button off ebay for fairly cheap and look on YouTube to replace it.

I agree it sounds like a stuck power button. My experience with this problem first showed in a captivate of my moms. It was very bizarre tho. On stock ROM it would constantly do the vibrate, cycle, vibrate etc. On a custom ROM however, it has had zero problems with the power button. Maybe try that? Not a sure fire fix, just telling what happened with the Cappy. ☺
If this is power button problem you can try (what i did and worked, but it is your choice and you can damage your phone) drop little of oil in power button and press couple time with out battery in phone.

That's actually fairly dangerous for your device. I would suggest an air duster if you think it's dirty.
I'm actually having the same problem. It just started his morning.
The phone won't boot normally. I get the kernel boot screen, sometimes a Samsung screen, and then it turns off. 2-3 seconds max.
I can get it into download mode, but after 3-4 seconds, it spontaneously shuts off.
Recovery mode (CWM) is completely stable. I can get in, make back ups, perform a key test, etc. When I run a key test, it shows that the power button is a little sensitive, but not crazy. If I jiggle it some (mostly back a little) it registers a key press, even if I'm not fully pressing it. If I do press it fully, sometimes it doesn't register.
If this is really a button issue, why is recovery stable? Even if I put the phone on a flat surface with nothing that could touch the button, the phone still doesn't stay in download mode (it just shuts off.) When I put the phone in recovery, place it on a flat surface, and perform the key test, the phone isn't registering a key touch.
I've tried 3 different batteries, kept the phone plugged in, popped the battery and held the power button to discharge everything, wiped the cache, wiped dalvik cache, and used CWM touch to reboot (and avoid the power button all together.)
The only think I can think of that's maybe different is that gapps was FC'ing more than normal this morning (before the phone crapped out.)
I'm running StockMOD ROM 4.4.2 R2 with the Ktoonsez Kernel for TouchWiz 4.4.2.
EDIT: Also, when it's plugged in, the LED doesn't light up. I'm not sure that it's actually charging. I do have a wall charger, so I can verify that the batteries I'm using are charged.
Try flashing a different rom from recovery to see if it still happens. Also try a factory reset. If you get as close to stock as possible and it still happens it raises the probability thst its hardware.
If you put the battery in and wait a few moments does it turn on by itself?
Band-aid
@DocHoliday77 I messed with the phone a little later tonight and recovery became unstable. I'm convinced it's a power button problem now. I think the internal mechanism gets stuck and that's the issue.
When I put the battery in, the phone does try to boot by itself.
I used the advice in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53915864 and I was able to get up and running again. I opened the phone up, blew some compressed air on the button, tapped the flat side of the button lightly a few times with the end of my screwdriver, and put everything back together. I was able to get back into recovery, and then reboot normally.
I ordered a new power button and I plan on replacing it next week when it gets here, just to be on the safe side.
You guys at xda are life savers!
The booting up on its own after inserting the battery is a classic symptom of the power button going bad. Glad to hear you got it working for now, and that you are ordering a replacement. Everyone ive heard about getting it to work using any number of methods have always found it to only be a temporary solution.
Just a thought, in case it starts up again, maybe remove the plastic piece until you replace the switch. Hopefully that would help prevent it from getting accidentally pressed in your pocket or by bumping it into something. (You could probably still access it with a toothpick or something like that if needed)
I agree it's the power button. I just posted about my little experience on Google+
I tried seriously whacking it on the floor and everything. I wouldn't recommend that but I had no warranty and no funds for repair. Others had said that beating the crap out of it worked so I thought why not lol...
https://plus.google.com/116004961340303353216/posts/ig2ogLeUWJ8
Long story short, my beating it up didn't work but it did wake it up. It falling on the floor however, jarred whatever was stuck and it now works like a charm...good luck

Zenfone 2 Top Third Screen Unresponsive

Hi All
Noticed that the top inch or so of my screen becomes unresponsive from time to time. So I cannot pull down the notifications or menu. Also if I try to do anything else (call, text, access apps etc) it does not respond.
A restart seems to sort it out but none the less it is annoying and I would like to know if there is something I can do to sort it out?
Thanks for reading
Is there any type of screen protector installed? Please ensure the firmware is updated to the latest version. Please try booting in safe mode to see if possibly there is a 3rd party app causing the issue. Please see the following for safe boot http://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1005163/ If problem still exists then we recommend performing a hardware reset including cache wipe partition. Please see the following: http://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1011956/

I do have a screen protector but I do not think it is that as it happens randomly and rebooting it fixes it.
When I tried to boot into recovery so that I can clear the cache I also get an error, basically the open droid on his back with the word error so I cannot even boot into recovery.

When you see the open droid, Do the following.
Press Power (Hold), Press Volume Up and leave Volume Up.
You will enter recovery.
I think it is a hardware issue.
But still, try wiping cache and if possible do a factory reset (After Backup). Do not install any apps for a couple of days and see if the problem reoccurs

Thanks but that does not work. When I boot using power and volume up, I get the open droid and the boot options. I choose recovery and it boots but then I get an open droid with a red triangle with an '!' inside coming from his belly and the message 'Error!' underneath. From there the only thing that seems to work is holding the power button for about 10 seconds and that then turns the device off.

THERE YOU HAVE TO DO THE FOLLOWING:
Press Power + Volume up
And release only volume up while holding the power button. And once you see recovery, release power button too.
I find this occurs onmine sometimes too, the dead screen, not the unable to get to recovery. It has to be software as when you rotate the phone the problem still occurs on the top of the phone.
It is very occasional, generally after a reboot, and another reboot will fix it but just an annoyance.
Funny thing is, I have 2 Zenfone 2's one a 2.3ghz 64gb and a 1.8ghz(I'd love it if the transcribe error was right, 8.1ghz would kill anything and heat up the room like a fire) 32gb phone and the problem is present on both...

No need for the CAPS! All you had to say is to press them when I get the droid with the error message, I thought you meant when I first entered to select the recovery mode. Thank you, managed to get in.

Well, By CAPS i never meant to be rude. I was just emphasizing that "There" (Where you see the droid bot)"You have to do the following". Caps grabs attention.

Hi Guys,
I dropped my zenfone2 in water yesterday.. Just for 2 seconds though.. I found the screen behaving weird,so switched off, removed all parts and kept to dry. There was some lag in the screen. At night again kept it in rice jar and also dried for sometime in sun.
1 problem i am facing is, since yesterday, the exact middle part(about 1 inch) of the screen has become unresponsive. Rest everything is working fine except this. Due to this facing issues with handling the phone.
Please if someone can help that would be great. Or do i need to visit the service centre?
Regards,
Satish
