Hey Guys,
I have a S3 AT&T and it just keeps turning on and off by its self about every 20 seconds. I have looked around and many people have this issue and there are a few solution out there but all of those solutions need my phone to stay on for a while. I can't do a hard reset and I can't do any kind of flash because it stays on for such a short time. Also the phone does not have water damage.
Below are the steps I have tried so far.
-Tried a new battery but same issue
-Thought maybe the power button was stuck but it looks fine.
-Tried to do hard reset and flash but does not stay on long enough
Not sure what else to do. Its killing me that I cant figure out how to fix it!! THERE MUST BE A WAY!
Thanks everyone!

Yes it even in the download and recovery menu it does this.
I'm having this exact same problem. Even in download mode it'll reboot. In fact, even while rebooting it reboots. I was lucky in that it stayed in download mode long enough for me to ODIN back to stock, but it's still rebooting. Completely unusable because it never stays on long enough. Can anyone help?
Did it ever take a dive off the table or your hands?
It wouldn't surprise me if something internally was loose....

For myself, not recently. The phone was in perfect working condition, until I updated my ROM. Then when I woke up this morning, this problem occurred.

Honestly, it seems to me as if the power button is stuck somehow. It doesn't look stuck to me, but the behaviour of the phone is like that. The constant rebooting, the way the screen turns on, and even how the power off menu randomly comes up by itself.

Mine has fallen before but nothing serious I'v dropped phones way worse then this. But I do think something is definitely loose. If I just leave the phone alone it doesn't power on or off. But as soon as I pick it up and move it, it powers on then in 20 seconds just goes off again.
Anyone have any idea what could be loose maybe?
Thanks

your best bet is too open up the phone and look at the connectors from the batter to the phone and make sure that those have a solid connection.
99% it is a power button failure. I as well as many others are suffering from this.
Try to avoid using the power button as much as possible. Use the home button to power on and find a softkey to turn your screen off. Easiest way is use quick toggles to turn off screen.

Hi All,
I would like to describe something which I'm not sure if it is just me or a bug. There have been a few occasions where I have pressed the power button to put the phone to sleep and after a second, the screen turns back on again. I've tried to replicate it by maybe the way I have pressed it and it could have a residual effect on the button, thinking I want to turn it on again but I've not been successful. It just happens on and off.
Other than that, I love my HTC One X. Just like to find out if others do encounter this. Thanks! =)

Thought it was just me, looks like it's a bug.
Same here, doesn't always happen
Same here, but happened only 3 or 4. Also i was unable to reproduce it on purpose.
Great, at least I'm not alone and it is not due to my way of pressing the power button. Hope HTC fixes this bug in the next update. Thanks all! =)
Me too!!!
same here
Mine does this too, also mines rooted with custom rom. I can replicate it if a press the screen lock button a few times it just shuts off, no shut down or any warning about what's its done. Do we know if this is a hardware or software fault as I guess my warranty is void after rooting.
Same here. I hope somebody can provide a solution.
I've had this before on my sensation but not on my HOX.. running cm10

Whenever i turn off my phone and charging, it will boot into recovery. after a while it will boot up itself as usual.
Never happened to me in stock recovery/rom... Not sure what is the cause

Hi Thant,
Thanks for the info. But my battery doesn't even full or almost full. Even when my battery is only 8% left it will boot up automatically.
i wish they have option to turn the feature off..
I literally have never had a problem like this with this phone, but just recently I flashed the new AOKP jb 8-29 build and after a day or two of using it I started getting random reboots where the phone would crash and then start vibrating in intervals. I couldn't get it to stop unless I pulled the battery. Thinking this was just a bug with the rom, I just rebooted to recovery and wiped and flashed the latest jedi mind trick v7. I let the phone sit for a little bit after first boot, but when I then tried to go through the setup I got the exact same problem. Now the phone crashes like this every time I boot up and even while I'm in recovery mode! Someone please help if you know what might be causing this.
EDIT: Now it's doing this every time I put the battery back in; I can't turn on the phone or go into recovery while it's vibrating like this

I think you're right because before every time I put in the battery the phone would turn on, but I tapped the power button a few times to loosen it up and put the battery in and it didn't turn on. Is there any way to remote start without having to touch the power button that you know of? Thanks for the advice btw
This same scenario happened to me just yesterday morning. I researched it and this issue does seem to be popping up more frequently among Samsung phones. Maybe power button design is faulty and they're starting to wear out now after a year plus of use? I sent mine off to MobileTechVideos today to be fixed. I feel so lost without my phone!

What I've read is no. Its not the button its self, but the circuits behind the button that mess up. Unless you are really skilled at soldering and can re wire the board, I don't see that happening.

I recently Rooted my sealed samsung galaxy s3 without having a clue what i'm doing i downloaded this program called snapdragon to root it along with ODIN. The phone rooted fine everything was working okay, I even downloaded an app to see if the root was successful and indeed it was. I shut the phone down wake up in the morning to turn it back on and I get zero response. Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Might seem obvious, but have you tried leaving it plugged in for ten-fifteen minutes?

Yes of course I've tried leaving it plugged in for several hours and the night before the phone was at 100% charge so I doubt battery is the issue.
Tks though
Did you try booting into recovery?

Ummm seems like u can fix it.... go bak to stock using odin as well and go back to stock and i believe cwm is going to be gone so as your root access so re-do it but this time guide yourself through a turorial(a.k.a google) and since you have to clue i think the best choice for you is to find a video tutorial in case your doubting or getting confused with the steps or sometimes to see what you did wrong that caused the phone to misbehave...

This is why I hate one-click-root kits, you get people doing things to their phones they don't understand, wreck it and come here saying "help, I don't know what do do!" Something like this you really should at least understand the basics. I hope this gets you more involved in researching what's actually happening. It's important to know what's happening to your device as well as why, that way if something goes badly you'll have an idea of how to get out of it.
Sorry, enough lecturing, let's see if we can get something going here. Give a bit more detail about what happens. You're phone is shut down, right? You hit the power button and no response, like the battery is actually out of the phone, or does it turn on and give you a blank screen? If it was a brick, I'd think you'd at least see the boot screen before everything goes wrong.
Ok, I'm going to go ahead and assume you've removed the battery. If you haven't, do so now.
If it still won't turn on, try actually holding the power button down for 30-60 seconds. I had a scary moment with my phone yesterday, rebooted it running Wicked v5 on Trinity and the screen just died. I've been running that rom for a week with just a couple of issues here and there, nothing out of the ordinary. Pulled the battery and tried again, nothing. After holding the power button down for a bit I felt a quick vibrate, then the boot logo came up. No idea why, I'm going to have to look into it.
Beyond that, I'm brand new to this phone and Sammy's Android devices so I'm still learning myself. HTC phones I could help out more with, but I'm still a bit clueless with this thing.

Yes I have taken out the battery replaced it several times. I hit the volume home and power button several times. When I do that I get a zero response nothing shows up I hear no sound its as if the phone is just completely dead. One thing I did realise is when I plug it into the computer and press the power button what would happen is it would connect and automatically disconnect
Can you get into Download mode? Volume down + Home + Power button?

Don't forget to let go of the power button when going into recovery.
Have you done what the other post said?
Hold power for about 10-30 seconds. Does it do anything? Do you feel a verrrry slight vibration?
When you plug it in without doing anything else does the computer see it in device manager? How about if you press power once? Or holding power down?
Does it register that its charging?
This may sound dumb but did you try powering up without the phone plugged into anything?

Ummm. Sorry but maybe im missing something? Your first sentence in your op says you didnt have a clue what you were doing....
And where is it supposed to infer that you've done everything already?
Imo you have been getting 'real' advice but from what I see you haven't 'really' answered anyones suggestions.
No one can help you if you dont tell us what exactly you have tried and what what happened when you did.
For example in your only response you mentioned hitting the volume and home keys a bunch of times....what exactly do you mean by this? Did you hold them while trying to power up? Volume up or down? Did you release any of them during that process, and if so which and when?
Its kinda hard to help someone who doesn't have a clue what they are doing and only responds that hes done everything common sense dictates.
I seriously mean no offence but to me common sense would dictate that you not try rooting or anything if you know you dont know what you're doing.
It would also dictate that if you want further help with this you should go back and respond to what everyone suggested.
Like I said, im not trying to offend, just help.

I am having the same issue
I just tried flashing Android Revolution to my phone. I went through the whole set up process. Went to reboot then it went blank. Nothing. I get nothing when I plug it in. The computer doesn't recognize any device attached to it. I've tried all the ideas listed here and I get nothing. It's as if the phone is completely dead. When I flashed the rom my battery was at 90%. I've used various roms on different phones and this was the first time I did it to my Galaxy s3 and this is the first time it's ever happened. Talk about frustrating.

It was amazing, I had the same problem but all i did was open up the back up undoing all the tiny screws and then took a can on compressed air and sprayed out the power button and its been working for more than a month now with the problem completely gone! try that first before sending to sammy.
Ok I am in the same boat. My device does not boot up, it will get to Samsung logo and restart half the time and the other half just vibrates every 2 seconds. I removed the battery while plugged in and it still vibrates. I took it apart and blew the power button with compressed air and nothing. Here is the funny thing if I bang the hell out of it, it almost boots up. Is there something that I can do less than sending it to Sammy ? If not I will sell it on craigslist for parts.

Same thing here. Only way to get it to power on is by hitting it, the harder the better it seems. After it turns on, touching the power button will make it go in to the restart loop 90% of the time. This sucks!
For me this started after I dropped my phone...with the case on and on carpet. I have also opened it up and sprayed with compressed air to no avail.

Hi Folks,
I had the same problem, the problem started when I dropped my fone on carpeted floor, here are symptoms
Fone restarts on its own, start the boot, inbetween the boot starts again, then, keeps vibrating every two seconds, you have to pull the battery out to stop it,
As soon as you put the battery back in, it restarts, again getting stuck, and then vibrating every two secods,
Here is what i did
- Cursed Samsung for making a sh***y phone - Didnt work
- Smacked my phone with whatever I could fine - Didnt work
- Opened all the screws up, took apart phone, pulled out the power button module (pcb), noticed power button was loose, put some glue into it, dried it, put it back, & ITS BEEN WORKING SINCE THEN ! It was a hardware fault, its not software !
Just my two cents, it worked in my case, I cannot guarantee if it will in your case too, try at your own risk !!

Same issue with SGH-M919. I was rooted and the rom I tried to use wouldn't work because the kernel caused some issues so I figured I would go back to stock. The device wouldn't go into recovery mode, so I flashed the stock rom via Odin. After the ROM loaded, the phone reset and I saw the Samsung screen then it rebooted and so on each time. It's not the power button as it works, has the spring feel to it and the phone would come one by itself if it was broken. So what can I do or am I in trouble?
Also, the phone will vibrate every 2 seconds

It's not the power button as it works, has the spring feel to it and the phone would come one by itself if it was broken. So what can I do or am I in trouble?
Also, the phone will vibrate every 2 seconds

Sure, the power button will "work", but if it's constantly vibrating and rebooting, it's probably an issue with the power button. Do what it shows in the video I posted, and if you do it right it'll probably fix it. I gad to attempt it twice as it didn't fix it the first time, but it's been like 4 months and I haven't had an issue since.
Thank you but it was the kernel causing problems. Somehow, the new ROM messed up the partitions and subsequently required a full wipe including all data then I flashed the stock ROM back via Odin and it was fine. I rooted it again and flashed Bliss Pop 1.8 and I love that ROM. No issues at all. Thanks for the help. I'm slowly learning about ROMs and Linux etc.. I appreciate the help. Does anyone have any advice as to how I can learn more??? Where do I post to get past this 10 posts rule???

Wow I just realized that post was from a week ago and that was for my girls S4. We got rid of it anyway. My response was regarding my Sprint LG G3 which I am slowly mastering.
Same thing here but here i have a Lenovo …idk what to do
I have had sleep of death issues infrequently with the Note 3 in the past. I have been having to do a battery pull every month or so. Of late , the issue seems to have become worse. I have had three battery pulls in the last 2 weeks. It has happened both while the phone was charging and also while not charging. I'm thinking long of doing a factory reset.
Any thoughts or ideas before I go do the factory reset?
Edit- I am on the stock rom.

A lot of times this will be caused by an app not working correctly. You can test this theory by booting your phone to "Safe Mode" and let it stay in that mode for a while. Before booting to "Safe Mode" check your running apps and make a note of them. If you do this and it resolves the issue, you'll need to track down the app that's causing it. Remove the latest apps that you've installed one by one until you find the culprit.
To boot "Safe Mode" turn off the phone normally. Now hold the power button to boot the phone, and while holding it, continue tapping the left menu key continuously until you get to the Lock screen. You should now be in "Safe Mode"
If you do this and the problem continues, try clearing the cache partition with recovery.
To boot recovery, turn off the phone normally. Now hold volume up, home, and power together until you see the Samsung logo. It will tell you it's booting to recovery in the upper left hand corner.
I hope this helps.
Thanks for the response. I went ahead and did a factory reset. I'll try your method if I run into issues again.

Thanks for explaining all the steps, it will be helpful when i try it out.
I am still not sure what sleep of death means, I see people complaining that the display doesnt turn on but the soft keys illuminate. In My case nothing works it looks like a phone with dead battery and to make it work I have to pull the battery. Today I had another weird issue. I sent a message using FB and the screen froze I was able to turn of the display using power button but unable to restart it. Again another battery pull to fix it. So can some one please explain what exactly is a sleep of death.
Thanks

A factory reset is always the quickest way to resolve issues. I just learn how to do this stuff so I can help out when people have problems. And if you're like me at all, completely setting things back up is very annoying, especially when you do as much testing and flashing the number of ROM's that I do.

A lot of times the "sleep of death" is caused by what's known as a kernel panic. It's when the kernel isn't functioning right and won't let certain aspects of the Android OS function properly, that being the part that tells the hardware keys what to do, or something that affects things in other parts of the OS. But kernel panics can be caused by a rouge app like I explained, or even a bad OTA update. It's just like a computer will have a brain fart at random times for unexplained reasons.
Thanks for explaining all The info. would a Kernel Panic cause the hardware buttons also not to respond. I have hardware buttons also failing to respond and that leads me to beleive it is a HW issue.
Thanks!

Yes a kernel panic can cause anything not to respond. The OS determines what to do when a hard or soft key is pressed, even the power button. With the kernel ultimately controlling all of that, it could be the problem. It also very well could be an actual hardware issue though. The only way to tell for sure is do a full wipe and factory reset. And if that doesn't work, use Odin to flash a complete stock image. If either of those procedures fixes the problem, then it was a software issue, whether that be an app or the OS itself. I will be back on here in just a little bit if you need any guidance in doing any of that.
