5X completely stock. Cannot get into anything via buttons. Laptop won't see it. What to do?

A lot more info and details about what happened would be helpful. Screen unresponsive? Does it boot? Stuck at splash screen? Can you get into fastboot mode?
No boot, power literally dead. Not recognized with USB.

What happened to it?
Can you get into the bootloader? (power + volume down)
Nothing, he doesn't know. Buttons are dead, no bootloader. Stock. Is there a depthcharge type of maneuver to bring back to life? PS once I hit the power button the red light goes on for a second.
I've used different chargers that work.. It's not the chargers.

Try putting it inside a bag in the freezer for maybe an hour. Leave it in there and hit the power button and see if it turns on or just shows more life. If it does, you have the bootloop defect.
I suspect that is what you have since the odds are higher that you have it than some other problem. Contact LG about getting it repaired under warranty. This phone has a well know hardware defect and they have extended the warranty to at least 18 months. Though some have claimed they've extended it past that time frame. The more common symptom is that it bootloops. But some just go black, which is what mine did. It would not even try to boot, as in your situation. You can try some of the other fixes mentioned at XDA, but if you can get a warranty repair, just go that way and don't waste your time.
The only fix you may want to try this one:

Here's the background if you want to know. Either bad design, or solder isn't for a high enough temperature, or the CPU had an issue. I say you likely have it because it seems your kid was running stock and it was working normally, then just died.

I just received an email from LG stating that the IMEI has been removed. This is a refurbished unit from Google Protect. I know my kid did not scratch out the IMEI. What are the odds of GP sending me an IMEI less model? Google Fi says LG is pulling these shenanigans lately. What do you know? What a bunch of bull*hit!

UPDATE: Phone was replaced at the nearest service center free of charge, no questions asked. :highfive:
My phone took a fall today from about mid-chest height. I didn't think anything of it as it was in a case and the screen is unblemished, but a few minutes later I noticed it wouldn't turn on. I pulled the battery a few times, tried the three-finger salute while connected to power and it's showing no response. It does get a bit warm after a few minutes of having the battery in it, though. I'm pretty sure it's done for but if anyone has any suggestions for getting it to power up, I'm all ears!
In life, was obviously rooted and ran AOKP. In death, it's as beautiful as the day I bought it cosmetically speaking. No signs of liquid or physical abuse of any kind. Is it even worth it trying for the warranty replacement? "I woke up this morning and my phone won't power on, I dunno what happened?!?" Or should I not even bother and just take the $200 to the face for insurance to replace it? I'm just looking for some opinions. Thanks all! :highfive:

No blemishes and it doesnt power on?
WARRANTY
"I woke up this morning and my phone wont turn on."
-did you drop it or damage it?
"nope, take a look, not a scratch or mark on the moisture detector"
how can they not warranty it?
I'd try it. If it won't turn on at all, won't show anything on the screen, i seriously doubt they could hold the idea of it being rooted or using a custom ROM against you. Actually.... they can't even really use the idea of it being rooted against you, since rooting is legal per the DMCA.... so i think you'd be alright trying for a warranty replacement.
seriously, its not like they will send it to the forensics lab for deep analysis of the installed software
Ha. Thanks guys, I will try this on Tuesday as I've been stucking working overtime well past the time the stores close. I'll update in a couple days!
I bricked my old SGS2 while flashing CM9 wouldn't power open. Called in a replacement. As long as it doesn't turn shouldn't be a problem.

If all else fails, you should be able to flash stock back onto it even if you cant see the screen. If it heats up, I assume that it is powered on but you just cant see it. I would suggest using a USB dongle from ebay to force it into download mode and then Odin it back to stock. Even if this is not necessary, I would still suggest you get yourself one of the Usb Jigs to have around just in case in the future.
did you guys bought additonal monthly warranty from AT&T or is there a factory warranty from Samsung for 1 year period since purchased date?
Absolutely they will replace it. You don't even need acting skills for this trust me

Hi everyone,
This is my first post and I hope I won't somehow piss anyone off. I'm just looking for a little advice or guidance.
Device: SPH-D710 Samsung Galaxy S2 on Sprint (CDMA). It was running the latest over the air ICS update. It was not rooted.
Background: Starting about a month ago the phone began to occasionally restart on its own. Also, my clock widget began to disappear randomly, no matter how many times I would put it back on the screen. It would also occasionally crash on resource heavy apps like chrome or facebook. I installed Go Launcher to try to fix the widget problem. This is the only thing out of the ordinary that I've done recently.
Problem: While running an app the phone crashed. I pulled the battery and restarted it. It never booted. The screen remains completely black and the blue LED light stays on. I've tested a different battery, it wasn't the problem. I've plugged it into my computer and it does not see the device. Plugging in the charger turns on the blue light (I can only turn it off by pulling the battery).
Question: I'm pretty sure this phone is bricked but would love confirmation (whether you can confirm or tell me how I can confirm). What I really care about is being able to access the data that was on the phone. Is there any way I can access the data? The sprint store said it would be 50 bucks to look at it and if they can't fix it they would get me a new phone. I really don't care about a new phone. Is there anything that they can do to recover my data that I can't?
Basically, is there anything I can do to access the internal memory files? (Secondary question is can I fix the phone).
Thank you in advance for your input and excuse me if I haven't followed all common etiquette on this forum. (I did search the topic).
Do not send it to sprint. Look up jtag. Send it to a reputable company like mobiletechvideos. They will repair it if it can be brought back. Solid blue light is bricked. Flashing blue light is a bad battery. Goodluck.

It definitely looks promising - if they can fix it, would it be fixed but wiped? My main concern is recovering internal data.
spoke to kyle at mobiletechvideos and he thinks it's an emmc failure since it wasn't during flashing - in which case my saved data is gone forever. anyone disagree or have any other insight? can i save my data?

Mine started the random reboots, and then reboot loops, then couldn't get the screen to turn on...blah blah blah... lots of issues lots of people have seen. It was all because of the power button. It eventually got to where it just didn't work at all, and i was smacking the power button corner of the phone on a table or something to even get it to power on, and having to use the volume rocker wake option to wake the screen. I'm not sure if your issue is the same, but it only cost me $40 to get my power button replaced at a cell phone repair shop locally and took the guy less than 30mins.
Just a suggestion, may not have anything to do with it, but it could save you some money it happened to work. Alternatively you could try smacking the power button corner of the phone on a hard surface a few times and if it is the problem, it might unstick long enough at least know thats what it is.
I'm no expert, and i make no guarantees or promises, just my experience with mine and my wife's phone over the last 2 years...lot's of issues solved by one of three things, power button, usb port, and battery. Good luck!

I just replaced the battery and it turned back on.
Hello folks!
My girlfriend's phone is maybe bricked, I'm not sure, and I don't think we can use the word bricked, because it just happened whitout flashing or attempting anything, she was just charging it and it shut off.
The device vibrates and boots when you put in the battery, but it just keep going for like 5 seconds after the vibration,
I mean, you put in the battery ...(Vibration)... 1.... (Samsung logo)...2...3...(S3 logo)....4....5....(black screen forever!)
It just does that, no bootloop, no nothing.
And I can't try to turn it on again until I remove and reinstall the battery.
Even if I try to get it in download mode or recovery, It just turn off after 5 seconds!
I tried different batteries also.
Have anoyone experienced something similar?
Could be sds, sudden death syndrome. It's well documented all over. The power button fails and it's considered a manufacturer defect. Take it to sprint and they should replace it for free.

Yeah! It must be that, I just started trying with my S3 keeping the power button pushed and it does the same thing.
I'm not on Sprint anymore, I'm not even in USA.
Is there any way to fix it?
Cleaning it maybe?
Replacing the switch? (I'm watching some switches being sold on ebay)
I also work on a factory where we work with SMT electronic devices so there's a lot of equipment for repairing it.
Compressed air might fix it, and I believe you can replace it with a little patience.

That's what I was thinking, tonight I'm going to use some alcohol and compressed air and see if that works.
And if that doesn't work, I'm buying the replacement and there's a lot of people here who are specialized in SMT and who can help me.
Thank you dude, I'm maybe reporting tomorrow

No, cleaning it with alcohol and compressed air didn't worked, I changed the power switch and it worked pretty well... for like a day or two and then It keep happening the same.
Right now a friend of mine who works on a cellphone refurbishing factory is working on it, I hope he can fix it.
What's happening to your S3 exactly?
This happened to me a few months ago and it turns out my power button was stuck. So what I did is I held the phone perpendicular to a table (power button side) a few inches above the table and with moderate force, slammed the phone on the table and after a few tries, it turned on as usual. Just be gentle with it. I hope this helped.

I actually tried that, and it works, but It's just like a temporal fix, if you keep using the power button it's gonna happen again eventualy.
Thanks ayway dude!
My phone failed today. It was working perfectly when I put it on charge with 15% battery left.
An hour or so later when I took it off the screen the phone is dead. All buttons unresponsive, tried different chargers, then took it to a shopping centre repair place who tested the battery and said it had charge in it. The LG charger still works perfectly with my S3 so it can't be the charger.
So I'm gutted as I've just returned from 2 weeks holiday and all my photos are on it. I tried plugging it in to a USB port on my PC but no joy.
Any ideas?
Guys I've love some help here.....

Well at this stage it doesn't look like there's much you can do! Can you access download mode? Take out the battery for a minute, put it back and power on with power+volume up. If it switches on you could try flashing a stock lg rom.
I'm new to LG so probably not the best help you can get, hopefully someone else can be of more assistance!

No I can't. The phone is stone cold dead. Nothing works, no power. I can't send it back under warranty as I'll lose all my holiday pics. I MUST get this working or at least get it repaired without losing my data.
Thanks
I have one piece of advice. Hold the power button for 8 seconds. Other than that plug it up for a few hours and try again.
It sounds like you are gonna be returning it though. If you return it I would emphasis the importance of the photos. Maybe they could do something.

You should try to explain that you really need those photos to the people who will repair it, maybe they come uo with something. And from now on you should use something like dropbox to back up your photos.

Google plus will automatically backup every picture you take on the cloud as well. They don't have to be shared public ally either....
That being said, I woul doubt the phone is totally dead. I would remove the battery for a while and then reinstall it and put it on the charger overnight or something. Another option would be to go into a store that has g3 on display and use it's battery to power your phone up.

I have woken up this morning and my phone is knackered.
Went to bed last night and left it on charge. Went to use it this morning and it is stuck in a boot up, crash, boot up cycle.
Dunno what's happened
It's not rooted. Has this happened to anyone else? Battery is at 100%
If anyone else has the same problem I phoned 3UK this morning and they are arranging to replace my phone.
It wouldn't even respond to the hard button factory restore process (all 3 versions).
Dunno what happened to it! One minute its fine, next its a brink!
Same here except my phone was dead.....no power at all!
This is the FIRST time I HAVEN'T had cloud backup working.
So any more dead G3's out there?
Well my phone has been sent for warranty claim. I'll update with what the issue was if I ever find out.

My promotion expired too, but since Dropbox saved me twice I decided to pay for it. 10 bucks a month is OK.
As for the phone, it's seems to be damaged somehow. Could you take to an LG repair center?
Try this
I had the same problem earlier. My screen was unresponsive and i couldn't do anything. It wouldn't turn on except for the load battery screen so i took out the supplied lg charger and took out battery, then plugged my charger in without the battery inside then put the battery in after unplugging the charger then plugged it back in. So be it, the phone starts charging and it works im not sure if your phone has the same problem but it worked for me
Long story short the phone main board had died. Only fix was repair under warranty.

Ive had some wierdness happen with charging but only since i switched to ART. Always try taking battery out if long press power gives no joy - its one of the great things about a removeable battery. Good luck with your second and your photo soutions
I'm completely bamboozled, and no technical expert when it comes to in-depth diagnosis - so bear with me here.
On Saturday evening, I dropped my Premium onto my sofa, not realising the TV remote was there - and it sounded like the 2 connected with some force. Since then it wont turn on, it wont charge, and it isn't recognised by my PC when I connect it. I took it to a local repair shop, who held onto it during today, who returned it hours later confirming that their tech had checked all the internal connections/screen etc, and they couldn't determine what was wrong with it.
I should note at this point that I'm aware that third-party repairs void warranties - however O2 informed me that as it was accidental damage and not a manufaturing fault, my warranty was void anyway. I also didn't take out insurance, as at the time finances were tight, and I'd had insurance on my 2 previous handsets (Z, and Z Ultra) and not claimed. Typical.
So i'm at a complete loss - I don't know what to do, and what makes this worse is that I haven't even had it 6 months, so I'm paying for a device I can't use. And I'm locked into a 24 month contract - double ouch.
XDA - if anyone can help me in any way whatsoever, I'd be so grateful.

Damn straight, got nothing here
Tried holding power and volume down for awhile to see if you can soft reset it? Also, I believe there is a hard reset button in the sim card bay as a last resort. Shouldn't be rendered useless after a light drop.
Try open up the flap where the sim card is in. There's a button in there. Try holding it down for 10 to 30 seconds.

Thanks all - tried all those suggestions before I had it looked at unfortunately. I've even tried the 2-minute hold-down of the button under the flap, to no avail

Hi,
for the z5p, try holding down power and vol+ in that order, the phone shoud vibrate 3 times, after that [if that worked] then let go of both buttons,
wait for the LED indicator to light up yellow/orange and press vol+ and that will get you to recovery
alternately try getting into fastboot, by doing the above but with the device plugged in to usb port on pc and keep the vol+ button pressed.
when the LED is blue, you're in fastboot
and from there ou can try running fastboot reboot
good luck

No joy I'm afraid
I've tried:
Power+VolUp
USB
USB+VolUp
USB+VolDown
Hidden reset button (both short and 2 mins)
Left plugged into a (Sony, not third-party) charger for 3/4 hours
It's completely unresponsive. No notification LED, no "connected" sound from my PC when I plug it in - nothing. The repair shop were convinced it wasn't a screen issue, and that the guy checked every connection and they were all fine. The only physical damage is beside the power button - i've attached a photo to this post.
I wouldn't have thought there'd be any point even sending it to Sony, as its not a manufacturing issue; they'd just send it right back. I've had terrible luck recently, and this is really the icing on the cake - so I'm grateful for any tips, etc
hmm, okay, i want to suggest that the drop knocked your battery loose but that's probably not it,
if you "jammed up" the power button, then you probably need to open the phone up and take a look. , most buttons are a combination of the bendy plastic stuff with an itty-bitty button beneath them, BUT this could also be, maybe, related to the fact of the fingerprint sensor in the power button ?
again, with button being jammed up, maybe something is touching/not touching where it should/shouldn't be ?
these are all the things i could think of. Hope it helps. I just got one of these, they definitely need a hard case.
You should see the bend test on youtube , xD

hmm, okay, i want to suggest that the drop knocked your battery loose but that's probably not it,

Hmm, I can't try taking it apart as I don't have the tools (definately an option to try, though) - however, surely if it was just an issue of the power button not "touching" where it should, it would charge/be detected by a PC when connected? At least the notification light would illuminate..
That bend test is crazy, made me cringe
try hold volume down and then plug it into a computer. It should turn it into download mode which should have the LED be blue iirc. That's to see if it is actually unresponsive and dead. If that works you can try and flashing the stock firmware and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't then if there isn't any real damage it may be covered by warranty since they wouldn't know how it happened

It's completely unresponsive dude, no signs of life no matter what
Warranty is a no-go too, if you see the pic attached to my reponse above the damage is pretty visible.. I'm so gutted, this is the best handset I've had and I've ****ed it up...
I'll sell you mine for $550 USD shipped lol jk shipping would be hella expensive.

The funny thing is it'd most-likely work out cheaper than buying a new one here in the UK
Wouldn't surprise me. I paid $700USD but that included added warranty from the importer.
