Worth upgrading to Pixel 2 XL from IPhone 7plus? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I had been using Android till last year (mostly Nexus devices) and it was last year when i decided to try out the IPhone 7 plus. Overall, IP7P is a good device, stable OS and nice performance but I didn't like the way i was tied in the closed OS, not being able to use some of my fav apps and how my cloud storage is so limited on iOS.
So, i pre-ordered Pixel 2 XL 128 on launch day and expecting on Oct 25th. I am still susceptible of the change, mostly because of looks of new Pixel. My primary reason is software but then shall i wait for Pixel 3 or will my decision to jump prove worthy?
Anyone else in the same boat as me?

It's subjective and we can't decide whether you'll like the device or not, but it's a pretty good upgrade hardware wise.
You'll get a better (the best) camera, screen, and front facing dual speakers. Like the iPhone it lacks a headphone jack though.
It's the phone to get if you want the best android experience, so I'm sure you'll like the software if you've used android before.
The only way to know for sure is to have the device in your hands and decide on your own. Return it if it's not for you.

not in the same boat.. but i broke my normal upgrade cycle for this phone too.
it's mostly the software experience that drew me in the most

Thanks for the support. I was really looking some push from folks to enable this change. Yes, my primary reason is pure android experience that I will get on Pixel. Also, since i was full time android user since years but been on iOS for last one year, I mostly used Google apps and very closed tied with them, so I am essentially using more Google apps on iOS than any Apple specific apps.
Camera is definitely one of the plus points on Pixel. I really didn't care abt the 3.5mm jack removal on IP7 since I mostly use bluetooth for music.

If you want the best pure android experience than yes. But i have never seen an incentive for i devices.. to much control for me .. the drawer feature alone makes android worth it..

Not in the same exact position, but similar ...
Had Android since 2009 and switched to the iPhone 7 Plus last year as well. Like you I enjoyed the stability, fluidity but after I while I began to miss Android and got bored with iOS and it's restrictive ways. So, I grabbed a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. Solid device all around except for software updates! iOS had gotten me spoiled to instant availability of updates as soon as they were announced. So, waiting for Sammy to get me Oreo irked me and I pre-ordered the Pixel XL 2! Now I can get my Android and prompt updates [emoji4]

That's the reason I always go with Google phones. It gets you pure Android experience and instant updates. And after using iOS for one year, I'm super impatient for my pixel 2 xl. Can't wait to get out of this closed system.

Good to see my peeps on here ...typing away on a Moto Z play till my 2 XL arrives ..I will be keeping my iPhone hopefully the new one when it releases and I'm super excited to be coming back to Google stock..enjoyed my S8+ as well but nothing like getting updates and smoothness of stock has me back on the wild side haha
Sent using Tapatalk

Yep, the S8+ was cool, but sold it after a month to get back Google stock...

My wife has an ip7p, it's a nice phone but would never be a replacement for my Pixel. Too many reasons to start on. If you prefer the iphone that's ok but for me no competition. Not even an option..

I don't think it's worth upgrade

I have a iPhone 7 plus too, can't decide if I should sell it and order the xl 2. The 7 plus is a good phone with great battery life. After seeing the pixel XL 2 in person I'm undecided.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Can confirm the front speakers on the 2XL are not as good as the iPhone stereo set up.
Kind of disappointed. But hey at least they are front firing.
Sent from my Pixel XL using XDA-Developers Legacy app

Well, I was also undecided until I checked the xl 2 today. Very fluid and the display is far better than iPhone 7 plus. I checked few YouTube vids and it sounded great. Camera captured few great pics. Recorded a slow Mo video as well.
Overall I'm impressed and waiting for Oct 25th.

Not an iPhone user. Never have been. But u said you used to be a nexus guy, so you will LOOOOVE this phone, Well, hopefully. Looking back all my nexus were great, but pixel really did take it to a new level.

Honestly, if you're on this forum, or any xda forum for that matter, asking about if Android is better than Apple...you're in the wrong place! Seriously. Nobody can sway somebody into the differences....because there are too many to even comprehend. This discussion is like asking if somebody should run Linux or Windows. SMH. Use each phone and find out for yourself.

Well yes. It totally makes sense but I'm coming from one full year of iOS usage, I was totally getting sunk into iOS and was totally happy with it until I used pixel. As much as I like my iPhone, I still feel Android has much more to offer than iPhone. It gives you freedom to do what you want. Overall I'm quite excited to move to Android.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I used the iPhone 7+ for probably half a year, loved the battery life but like everyone said you just get tired of not being able to customize. The app drawer was the biggest complaint for me because I like minimal things on my homepage and it drove me nuts having all icons on my homescreen whether they were in a folder or not. I can honestly say I havent had an Android phone have as good of battery as my iPhone but to me its still worth the switch. I'm in between the V30 and Pixel 2 XL. Got the v30 currently and have my 2XL on order for the 25th. I like the updates but not a huge fan of the way the pixel 2 xl looks. so we will see what I end up with.

S3 to iphone 5 back to S3

Hello everyone, I'm just posting about my experience with the iphone 5. I bought a white one on the release date and put my trusty S3 in a drawer for a back up. We'll I didn't even last three days before I ran back to At&t and got my S3 reactivated. The iphone is nice and all that but it's too simple for my taste, I need to be able to do what I want when I want and I felt severely handicapped with the iphone 5. Not saying it's a bad phone but it's definitely not for me. Anyone else had a similar experience?

Not too many Android users are willing to sink that kind of coin for a phone to simply try it out. Especially in this forum since we have the latest Samsung phone. Good to see you come back. I personally could never go back to Apple. Just sucks because I own a Apple TV and MacBook Pro. Apples ecosystem is great. Wish Google got with the times when it comes to cross platform support. More specifically I miss air play, ability to control all my home media with my phone etc.
And I know dlna/all cast is available but Google needs to implement something in their next OS that smokes Apples.

I've done both android and iphone in the past. I got my wife the iPhone 5 and I do like it. I had the 4 and while it's not a huge leap in design and features the improvements are nice and it is a very smooth experience.
And for some reason it's wicked fast on the net. I like my sgs3 but don't see a fault with the iPhone 5. Phones are phones and each one brings something unique to a user

My wife is looking at the iPhone 5, she's worried about battery life though(she works about 10 hours a day with no way to charge her phone).
How has your battery life been so far?
Thanks
only thing i miss about iphone life is the all the accessories.
car integration, sound docs, .....
but, all that goes out the window with the new lighting adapter.
Android gv you more freedom

don't know how anyone can argue that the iphone is not a good phone.
i like the S3 for the flexibility and total control over the phone that it allows.
I've been reading nothing but bad reviews from customers about the battery life of iphone 5. Yeah, all these main sites are comparing the battery life with the RAZOR MAXX but then in the comments section people are always complaining saying the claims aren't true.

I'm guessing the people having the short battery life are running the phone a lot with LTE.

I have an ATT gs3 and also the iphone 5 im testing out. The iphone 5 has amazing battery life. Was able to get 14 hours of standby and 9 hours 30 min of usage out of it yesterday with 21% remaining for the day. And its suppose to be the same battery life as the chip is the same one powering both.

Yes, sort of.
I switched to the GS3 from a 4S about three months ago. Took a bit of adjusting to say the least. I held on to the 4S for almost a month before I sold it, thinking it was enough to wean off of iOS. I now definitely prefer the S3 for general device usage, but I miss the many apps I'd purchased on the Apple app store for the past three years, so I started looking for deals on used 4S. On iPhone 5 launch day I bought a like new 4S from a guy who just upgraded to the 5, for half of what I sold my 4S for couple months back lol. Now I can switch between them as I please.
Other than some of the apps I'm missing, it's kind of hard to go back. I think Apple is too far in the simplicity end of the scale. Just an example, iPhone gives you ZERO ability to change anything on the camera, not even change to a lower resolution. S3, never mind that I can adjust things like metering method and ISO sensitivity, I can put those control shortcuts right on the screen.

Do you have an absolutely ridiculous amount of spare money or something?
You could have just given me $700 and I'd have told you the iPhone is poop.
The battery life is far from stellar and it still doesn't have widgets among other things I'm just not impressed with it.the new maps suck I had to create a new account for the App Store just to download YouTube and it forces you to add your credit card info before you can even download free apps ill never get of my s3 for the i5 it's just less of a phone IMHO

Sweet good to know, my gf is getting one once her contract is up. Galaxy S3 does a great job with battery life when you consider the much larger/brighter screen as well as the widgets and number of processes it has running compared to the iphone 5. I couldn't leave to switch to the iphone 5, way too many features lost and I'm spoiled with the bigger screen. iPhone 5 is marketed towards simplicity for the older generation transitioning to smart phones and people who don't like to mess around with their phone too much. Multitasking is absolutely terrible with the iphone, but the ios6 Siri is pretty cool I must say. Great improvement there.
I have both s3 and ip5. Been switching between them depending where I go because I don't have a case yet for the ip5 so I have been carefull with it. Both are great phones. My biggest complaint is you can't change the black background menus and white text on the s3. I almost throw my s3 at the pavement everytime I get a call outside in the daylight. I have to cover the screen with both hands just to see who is callng! With the ip5 I can see it easily even with sunglasses because it has white backgrounds and black text. Everyone talks about how customizable android phones are but this simple change to invert the color scheme is near impossible to do. Im just going to keep the s3 around to play with but the ip5 is going to be my daily driver.

Yeah, it's a little hard to read. If you have auto brightness enabled, it should make it a lot easier to read. As for white backgrounds, there's got to be a white theme out there you can apply to your GS3 to make it easier to read.

Waiting on Nexus 6, how many of you would jump?

My Nexus 6 should arrive on Dec 15 and I'm totally looking forward to dumping LG G3. It took half year to bump the bootloader and get AOSP, it's too much for me. And I can't stand LG firmware, it's crap and laggy.
so I wonder, how many ppl here are waiting/ready to jump the ship ?
Why do so many people complain about lag i have zero lag. And as for development being slow if it was that big of a problem learn to do it yourself which a lot of people dont have time for. Nexus 6 will get way better development support because its bootloader can already be unlocked and its completely open source so hardly a fair comparison imo. Wouldnt ditch my G3 entirely for a n6 but would love to try one

Wouldn't switch right now, myself. The N6 is showing the same early-adopter problems the N5 did. Also not willing to encourage Google to take the road they are starting to lean towards. Given the spec comparisons between the N6 and the current and near-term competition, the asking price is a bit, optimistic shall we say, on Google's part. Beyond those concerns, I really like my G3. Beautiful display, snappy and responsive. I can't even say that LG's skin bothers me all that much. There were some additional features I wanted, so I rooted and did some tinkering with Xposed, but I am still running the stock ROM, and expect to be for the foreseeable future. Being that I haven't run stock for longer than it took me to root my previous phones, that's saying something. The only thing I can think of that might tempt me to flash a custom ROM would be if the PA team added the G3 to their list of officially supported devices. Even that might not be enough. Having been a flash junkie for a bit, I do appreciate the stability of a (mostly) stock ROM these days.
This years nexus phone simply costs too much this time off-contract. I think more people would opt to get the OPO. I managed to snag a G3 for $69 on contract. I wouldn't normally go on-contract, but we got a really sweet deal from work that made it worthwhile. (Free roaming data in any country, massive minutes package, special international rates, etc...)
This device is clearly intended for international users, For US/Canadian users your better off owning a Samsung, HTC or Motorola, If your into custom anything.
I personally would like to change over from the G3 to the Nexus 6 or the Moto x 2014. If the Nexus 6 is to big for me i'll defnitly go for the Moto X 2014. Either way eff this lg ****.
The G3 is THE NICEST device, Physically. But when it comes anything about the phone that isn't physical it just sucks sack. (except that notification area, LG did right here, But failed everywhere else)

I can't speak for everyone here, But for myself my G3 lags like **** and the responsiveness goes into the toilet the instant ANY Xposed module is installed (I haven't found a module yet that doesn't cause a system wide lag and/or battery drain). After I disable module and everything is fine, Re-enable ANY module and phone is back to performing like ****.
On my phone some apps cause the same thing.
It's not the fact that we "can't" reset, It's the fact that your playing Russian roulette on this device everytime you install anything and then having to flash every damn time an app causes an internal slowdown. (Most of the time uninstalling the bad app doesn't help, Usually requires a full flash to get rid of the problem.)
All Xposed modules on D852 = Will cause system wide phone lag for no explainable reason.
All Custom kernel on D852 = Will cause system wide phone lag for no explainable reason.
Some apps on D852 = Will cause system wide phone lag for no explainable reason.
Just because someone develops their own stuff isn't going to make anything faster.
It would take you just as long to develop anything as it would for anyone that is currently already developing for this platform.
If your not waiting for someone to build you something, You're just sitting there waiting the same amount of time waiting on yourself to do the exact same thing. Not only that but you can sit here on the G3 and get 1 rom a month or you can get a phone with real development and have roms fired at you so fast you can't even test them all.
I want to. I want to get the moto x '14. But I'm on verizon edge. And that means to do it now is have to pay 200 bucks and give them the phone. Or wait 8 months and just give them the phone. (I have to pay 75% of the phones off contract price at 26 bucks a month.) or if I pay it off 100% I can keep it. So I'm going to wait another month or so and see how lollipop treats us vzw people. If I don't get lp by then I'm going to pay them the money and go on my merry way. I'll never buy a phone with a aftermarket skin again. Just moto and nexus.
My wife got the m8. Hate dealing with it. Mom got the s5. Its a pain. And me with LG. I rocked moto back in the devour days with blur. I'd rather have that **** than this. But. Hey. Whatever. I think Motorola should do a devour redo. Same unibody metal shell, New specs, New screen, no blur. Oh man it'd be amazing.

I was thinking but not any more. Love g3 for external memory and removable battery.
I was between the N6 and the G3, and picked the G3 because it is half the price! I even got the 32/3GB version for a little bit more. I couldn't believe Google's asking price for the Nexus 6. Oh well, good for them! It seems it's selling well even though it has a SLEW of problems! For its size it has terrible battery life and mediocre imaging... For their asking price I'd say it's not a good deal, except for the whole idea that it's going to get updated for years to come! But by next year or the following at most I'll be changing devices anyways...
Regardless, the Nexus 6 looks like a good phone. But I'm too happy with my G3 awesome battery, awesome screen, 0 lag, great camera. No complaints! Enjoy your Nexus 6 It's a monster of a phone
I would like a N6 but its rather pricey and more of a sideways moment on the G3.
The main reason I want a N6 is for the Dev support not due to lag on the G3 cause I have non, my is lighting fast.

Same... zero lag ever, still on 4.4.2 waiting for OTA.
I don't know why people say this phone is laggy... I think they're just whingers. Mine is slick as a really slick thing. No root, no XPosed fail modules, just stock smooth.

[Q] Should I actually get this phone?

Hey guys, so I'm upgrading from my old galaxy s3 tomorrow to Verizon's Edge program with my family. I'm a big multimedia user for my smartphone but I equally care very highly about durability, design, and future-proofing (raw performance). Therefore, I'm deciding between the Nexus 6 and the M9. Here's my breakdown of pros and cons:
Motorola Nexus 6 (24.99 on Verizon edge)
+1440p display
+/-phablet (I could see myself enjoying the size for videos)
+stock Google
+more likely will receive os updates earliest
-only somewhat metal construction
-about to be replaced by the next nexus only too soon
HTC One M9 (also 24.99 on Verizon edge)
+brand new
+snapdragon 810 latest cpu and gpu
+best build quality / design (big plus for me)
-eh screen size compared to competition
-1080p screen (will this really bite me in the next few years?)
-apparently a problematic device with regards to quality control?
Now: I'm especially concerned with some of the problems I've read with the m9 with regards to the poor battery performance, breaking of turbo charge with recent updates, the under-saturation of the color gamut which I didn't like seeing on store models, possible overheating which I heard was fixed before launch. Are these issues still plaguing the phone and would you stray away from the device altogether if I could instead choose the nexus 6?
Thanks in advance!
I love it, and when we get 5.1, it will be even better.
Frankly, I'm surprised that as a big-screen loving Sammy user, you don't have the Note on your short list.

I have held more than my fair share of m9 and not one has had a build quality issue let alone a single dead pixel. The latter actually amazed me.
With 5.1, HTC added this...

As much as I love HTC (aside from one Motorola and one Samsung I have had HTC phones since the PPC 6700 in 2005) and how much I love Sense, I would say the Nexus 6 or LG4. I'm really wishing my One M8 would have lasted a bit longer so I could have gotten the LG4, even with the plastic chassis. My One M9 has really been a sore subject lately, I haven't been happy with it all. I definitely got one of the terrible battery life version. It seems, I to be great battery life or like mine and absolutely abysmal battery life. Plus the cell signal on mine is pretty sad and likes to drop signal/stay in 1x mode. Coming from the Samsung, it'll feel like a child's toy compared to the M9 though, metal chassis phones feel so much more sturdy.
I was hating on the M9 hard at first, on launch day, went to Verizon, and compared to the M8 the heat was shocking and wasn't happy at all.
I decided to go for it, and I couldn't be more happy.
I loved my M8, and got great battery life on it, and at first my M8 was getting better battery life, but since the update to Android 5.1 it has been such an upgrade for the M9 in terms off heat battery and performance.
As for quality, it's top notch, not a single issue to mention.
The signal on mine is wonderful.
That's my .2 cents.
Whatever you decide, I wish you the best!
I sympathize with you OP. I've been waiting quietly on this board hoping for sunshine to drop and CyanogenMod to support the phone. I don't care for sense or any skin, although I recognize sense is the best of the skins. I nevertheless prefer straight android though and could not see myself running sense for long. I'm getting by easily on my s3 running the latest cm12 nightly. But I really want this m9 and it's driving me crazy!!!

Oh I'm well aware. I'm near state college, so I believe I would be shipping it off to you! It's more a matter of whether CyanogenMod supports this phone. At least for me. If I wanted to have to use the manufacturers take on the OS I'd just get an iPhone. Which at this point is something I'm considering for the very first time. Verizon locking these phones down like this is just an outrage.

I own the M9, G4, and Nexus 6.
Screen - G4, One M9 comes in a close 2nd (I mean reaaaallly close). I'm a sucker for LCD panels and the display on the nexus to me is its weakness. Whites are yellow and pink on the nexus, but you get deeper blacks. Whites are white on the G4 and M9. The is also the dimmest and has the worst outdoor disability.
Speakers - Nexus is the best to me, way louder. HTC has the better sound quality though. G4 is loud, but I hate the placement.
Battery - Nexus and m9 tie, (about 4 hrs SOT max brightness), the G4 falls short, about 2 hr 30 mins SOT (thats the tradeoff for those extra pixels). G4 does have iphone like standby time though and you can swap batteries ...
Camera - G4 1st, the nexus comes in 5th place and the m9 comes in 100th lol. Front facing - G4 edges the m9, and the nexus comes in dead last.
Root? - m9 u can unlock if you mail to or meet someone with a java card, nexus unlocks out the box, lg g4 is still locked like fort Knox. The nexus obviously has the better development community.
UI - love stock android, but will always have a soft spot for sense. LGs ui is just OK (too quirky)
All have decent reception, but the moto nexus gives me the best.
Overall, I like all three and there is not one I particularly prefer. Love the build, software, display, and battery of the m9 (hate the camera), love the screen, form factor, and camera of the G4 (hate that it's still locked and wish it had a better battery), love the speakers, size, and software of the nexus (wish it had a better display)...
Eh. If I had the choice to go back and the G4 was out already, I wouldve tried it out first. The Nexus looks good too spec wise. Looks cheap though as I have been spoiled with HTC build quality last couple years. I miss my m8 camera though. Tried to take some firework pics and videos this past weekend with my m9, not impressed. I'm on 5.1 as well. First time Samsung (girlfriend's note 4) shat all over my HTC camera. Heat and battery life aren't quite as good, especially out of the box. Custom roms and new firmware have helped with that so it's not such a big deal now. I miss the volume of the m8 as well. Overall, coming from an s3 I think it would be awesome. From an m8, maybe not the best choice. Just my opinion. I'm trying to stick with HTC. I really love their products.

Sorry...not on here much lately due to lack of root.
Anyway, reasons:
Heat/performance/battery life-- we'll put these together as they're all intertwined. Simply put, the phone gets hot doing almost anything which causes it to eat battery, and eventually, throttle.
Camera-- it's virtually impossible to take a good picture with this phone...it's almost always out of focus. Granted, I don't have the hands of a surgeon, but I didn't have these issues on my m8.
Connectivity-- I actually returned my first m9 and got another due to this issue... But the second one had the same issues. Specifically, I'm referring to Bluetooth and miricast issues. It's hard to really button these up and put them in a box because the issues are strange and intermittent: E.g., ppl can't hear me when on BT in my car sometimes, will lose connection randomly to my BT headset while working out (have exchanged headset but the issue persists). My car will suddenly not be able to access my phone's phone book sometimes... And this never happened with my m8, when streaming something to my TV, it is ridiculously buggy, losing connection randomly with no rhyme or reason... Again, I didn't have this issue with my m8.
And finally, the coating that they put on it to make it easier to grip and scratch resistant seems to have the exact opposite effect, scratching ridiculously easily. I accidentally put it in my pocket with some change once and the back has scratches all over it.
I wouldn't get this phone. I have it and especially unrooted I feel like it was a mistake. Horrible camera, back scratches if you look at it wrong (exaggerating), and it gets hot if you are doing anything taxing on the phone. The best way to describe this phone is it's one of those girls that you thought you wanted to date but all the rumors were true and youd regret it. Im switching to the Z4v soon.

With the latest Dev updated, many reports with 5.1 that there are a bunch of improvements, including the camera. That is my only complaint with the HTC One the past several years...camera sucks compared to iPhone. Have to say, my wife/daughter and their iPhone 6 cameras are pretty amazing.
This last update that is coming down if we can get it on the Verizon by the devs with updates...should resolve a lot of issues, like the overheating, other issues...
I've got mine on the way back and ready for Rom updating...haha

anyone jumping ship to G6 or S8?

Just wondering if anyone is thinking of jumping to one of these other phones. I think the G6 is a nice looking phone,. I have tried Samsung so many times since my S3 (last Samsung I actually liked) so as beautiful as of a device they put out, I simply can not get over the lag and stuttering of their phones. Tried the N7 a couple times and just couldn't choose that over my then 6P.
Project Fi is a sensible choice for a low data user. I'm staying with the POS Pixel XL for the time being. It's only a responsible choice.
I dont plan to jump to either of those but I might jump ship to the New Htc ocean due out probably in the next month or two. Htc devices have pretty much close to pure android and Htc devices usually have the largest dev following which means the most custom roms and mods and you can run the Viper rom most likely which team Venom is known for having the roms out that have the most mods available of any custom rom out.
Not a chance neither Samsung or LG have a good software or update policy. Sticking with Google devices from now on, shouldn't of picked up an LG G4, worst 12 months ever.

I was thinking about getting a g6 but my fears were confirmed about the speaker being weak when the reviews started coming out. Weak speakers seem to be the norm with water proof phones.
Other than where it's placed, I'm very happy with the sound from my pixel's speaker. Having a good and loud speaker is much more important to me over waterproofing.

A lot, mainly storage and feel in hand. The s8 is a great phone and so is the pixel. My main issues with the pixel XL were cost/value and storage. For $850 the pixel is overpriced esp at 32gb storage. If the phone would have had 64gb it would have been a keeper. I regret buying the pixel, it was a letdown. Keep in mind my previous phone before that was a 64gb 6P that I got new for $400. That phone still had a lot of life left in it and could have carried me through to the pixel 2 which I most likely would have gotten if I didn't feel the need to get out of the pixel asap. I never was a Samsung fan but this phone is pretty good.

I have both the G6 and the GS8. I have the G6 on AT&T, the S8 on T-mobile and the Pixel XL on Verizon. I like all 3 however the Pixel XL and the GS8 are by far the better of the 3. The G6 has abysmal battery life compared to the other 2, a decidedly worse camera and believe it or not, has more bloat than the GS8. The G6 is decent otherwise. Certainly an improvement over the G4 and 5. In terms of the GS8, I love the feel and look of it, the screen is awesome. (God forbid I drop it though ). It gets great battery life, on par with the XL, take great photos, on par with the XL. Lets you dark theme if you create a Samsung account ( eh hem google) and I am using the Paid Nova launcher configured to look like the Pixel launcher and have it themed dark.. And coupled with T-mobiles much improved and now blazing fast network, I actually for the first time in my life am enjoying a Samsung device. The XL still has better battery life, better camera and the smoothest fast interface despite being older and with an older SOC.. But I will say this, the GS8 is def not your Samsung of old.... They are def improving.

Right on. I've played with the S8+ a few times and really like it. I had the S7 edge prior to getting the Pixel XL and loved it. I like the direction Samsung is going. Their hardware and design are class leading, many of their software additions are useful and the GUI is aesthetically pleasing, in addition I feel like theyre really paying attention to what customers want. If the Pixel had just been another Nexus I probably would've kept my S7E, but I was very interested to use "the first Google phone." I like the Pixel a lot and the camera is really second to none. I'll probably hang onto it until the fall then upgrade to either the Note8 or Pixel 2 XL.
I'm jumping ship from my t mobile LG G6 to a Verizon phone. I really like the G6 except it cant be rooted, nice battery, runs smooth. just all around nice to handle..... If anyone knows which verizon phones that can be rooted I would appreciate your input.

Eh, I thought it was interesting but I feel this way. You need to be true to your dollar and what makes you happy.
I see it as a sign of the times that Samsung has been moving in the right direction when it comes to the UX, as have a lot of other OEMs. Not ignoring how locked down they are but the folks that care about that are a tiny minority.
This is also important to cut through the hive mind of "Samsung bad and Google can never do anything wrong".
So many guys griping about Touch"insert expletive here" but the last time they owned Samsung was the s2.
Folks attack them for trying to be like apple but ultimately it's not entirely about being original, it's about seeing what works and improving that, giving share holders the most bang for their buck.
Believe it or not we all benefit from the gimmicks/innovation of OEMs.
But hey like I said I don't care who likes what phone in the grand scheme of things it comes down to what works and what can you afford.
It's just good to see someone giving an honest opinion in our Android echo chamber.

Pixel XL or the Pixel XL 2?

I am in a bit of a dilemma. I am going to get a new phone, and I really like the Pixel XL. However, I read today that the Pixel XL 2 will be coming out in 2017. What is your opinion? Should I wait? Should I sell my phone once I see the Pixel XL 2 coming out? Should I keep the Pixel XL for the next two years? Thanks for your opinions!
If you can wait few months then Pixel 2 XL.
But keep in mind that the phone will be announced around October and won't be available until November/December or maybe even later.
Buy a Pixel XL (if you can get one) and buy the 2 when it comes around (if your finances allow) and sell the original XL.
About 9 months is a long to wait. Juat get the Pixel XL now and the Pixel XL 2 @yrs end.

Snapdragon 835 phones are just around the corner. Wait for those. Besides, Pixel XL is an extremely simplistic phone. In terms of hardware, it doesn't do much at all. Its software is pretty good but still very buggy. Aesthetically, it's hideous. To be honest I hate it - only keeping it for Project FI.

There's currently an 8 month long queue on the XL 2 so I'd recommend getting an XL - selling - get an XL2.
Also thought I read somewhere they have another phone in the works besides the pixel2. My pixel xl os isn't buggy at all. More stable than my v20. Its a good phone simplistic phone and if you can wait then do it but remember google is becoming like apple and making limited numbers on release date to drive up demand and hype.

But for real, since I financed with google I have that card that works only for the Google store. My pixel XL is almost payed off, and as soon as the pixel 2 drops I'm grabbing it.
In regards to the comment above mine..........
For a phone that cost me over $800, I am pissed at the amount of bugs it has. Randomly my nav bar doesn't respond in landscape orientation, when YouTube is playing in the background my volume buttons don't work ( and I have to go-to settings to change the volume), camera gets stuck on "processing hdr image" all the time, music randomly pauses while working or relaxing, Pandora/iHeartRadio/play music all randomly close in the middle of two tracks, etc etc.
These issues have persisted across multiple factory resets, multiple factory image flashes, and custom ROMs.
I would rma it, but google wants to place a $800 hold on my card to do so, and since I never have more than $400 on my card this isn't possible, eliminating any chance I have at RMA.

In terms of hardware it doesn't do much? Maybe you have a bugged phone like me, but a bit worse. Me and a friend switched pixel XL's for a day so I could see if he had similar problem. His phone was literally flawless.
Hardware wise, this phone is a masterpiece?! An 821 with google sauce for some battery saving, an adreno 530, and 4gb of ram? What phone are you comparing it to, to reach the assumption that "it's not much at all"? Software is far from buggy as long as your on a factory image with no modification. I love the way it looks, I love the chin because it reminds me of my HTC days, I love the glass/metal transition and subtle lines.
And you say your only keeping it for fi? Why not get a Nexus 5, or 6, or 5x, or 6p?

I've owned a lot of phones, iPhones, many various android phones and tablets. Pixel XL is hands down my favorite thus far. I've seen hardware defects on various forums, but my device isn't affected by any of them. It's the typical bribary of competing companies blowing up the .01% defects as much as humanly possible to create a negative vibe, it happens to all manufactures. However this phone is snappy, the assistant is great, and I actually really, really like the design. Got mine in white with a nice velvet red hexagonal case, looks very snazzy. The thing about bezels... if you don't have them where does your thumb/holding fingers go on a bezeless screen that requires two hands to hold? I'll tell you. On top of the screen. To me this seems like.. awful. Just keep some bezels so I have somewhere to put my hands without accidentally touching stuff. Sound quality is great. Software bugs...? I don't know of any. Electric blue accents? Gorgeous. A lot of little details went into this, the animation when you long press home, the blue tints, the swipes, the app opening. It's very responsive, very smooth natural interface, very intuitive. It's a great phone, 0 regrets buying it.

No waterproofing, no wiresless charging, no iris/face scanner, no stylus, no always on display, no sdcard slot, no HDR display, no pay system that works everywhere (MST), huge bezels, very thick, fugly.
Here's a picture to illustrate the point:
You sound more like a Samsung user. I think the pixel is great for users who like modifying the system, and who like a pure vanilla feel to the system.
I just got the XL like 2 weeks ago just wait for the Pixel 2 this phone isn't worth near the amount they are charging
What if Pixel 2 is a mid-range or budget phone...

Not a user, a typical fanboy. Anyone who has used Samsung phones know for a FACT that how laggy they become over time. I basically never thought I would there anything else other than Note series. But no, Samsung doesn't know how to optimise TouchWiz. They have had their time, they ain't going anywhere. Also the Note 7 is more a jewellery-look alike, a slippery fingerprint magnet, with an incredibly impractical glass design, I don't know how people can even hold them phones, disgusting. In any case, I have heard this big bezel thing so many times for Pixel! What about them Sony phones! Or HTCs! If you need fancy looking nonsense then go for them Chinese Ximi Mix phones or whatever, robust built is what a phone should have, not a looks to impress people around you, that's why attention whore people like the kinds of S7, Note 7 etc.
Even if you forget the design completely, it's beyond hilarious to compare a Pixel or a Nexus device even, with any TW Samsung. I guess after the brilliant Note 7 drama some kids had to ditch their Samsung and buy the next best flagship available, so they bought the Pixel, but now they see it's not bringing them the attention they had hoped for, so they get pissed off. They never knew anything about hardware or software at first place. But people like me, who have used almost all the S and Note phones of Samsung, wouldn't even dare to go back to them, it's a scary experience.
How could this thread not deteriorate into this? The title says it all. Do I buy a phantom device or spend money I might not have? But deteriorate it did and will continue to go down the rabbit hole.

How much did you guys pay for your pixel?
I paid a bunch.
Here's the rundown; then, the conclusion -
Shipping Status Quantity Item Price
Estimated delivery date: Dec 5, 2016 – Dec 7, 2016 1 Pixel XL (128 GB, Very Silver) $869.00
1 Project Fi SIM $0.00
Processing (1-2 business days) + Delivery Standard (3-5 business days): $0.00
Tax: $60.83
Total: $929.83
----------------------------------
I got ripped off. You did too. The markup on hardware must be as high Apple's. They probably make these phones for $400, then sell them for $900.
Not I. I paid $240 over a 24 month period for the 32gb Pixel. Delivery November 28th. A bargain at twice the price.
