Did the Pixel XL not take off as well as the Nexus 6P?

Just wondering how the Pixel XL did against the Nexus 6P?
I'm looking to upgrade to the S8+, but now I'm thinking to wait for the Pixel XXL.

It did better overall but we don't know how much since Google doesn't reveal. Also issues with availability did not help.

The fact they could not keep stock of the 128Gig model, I think they under estimated demand.
Still love the Pixel XL even though new phones have been replaced.

I believe it sold a lot better because of how much they marketed it and it was being pushed by Verizon who has the most subscribers. I don't think they've published actual numbers to support this, but they definitely sold more units.

In just terms of development Nexus wins hands down.

Agree, also the 5x and 6p were loaded for bear. As for the Pixel / XL I believe (my beliefs only don't go flaming) the slots for flashing are causing issues for those not totally familiar with the proper commands, monthly updates breaking twrp and root, SafetyNet breaking with each update, Verizon locking their bootloaders and the biggest.. The phone works great without a custom rom or kernel.
So if you desperately need root then I believe a lot of people are simply rooting stock so they can use ad blocking or feel they have total control over their device. (until they brick it but that's another discussion) I've really never seen so many experienced rooters and users here running stock. I wouldn't even unlock the bootloader (well I can't with Verizon) even though I wouldn't mind having the ability to do so for the future. So why would the devs spend time making a custom rom when there are limited users willing to use it?
Someone should make a poll of how many people who are experienced in rooting, unlocking, crack flashing (haven't heard that term in a while) etc. previous devices are now staying stock.

2. Running Pixel / XL stock bl unlocked
3. Stock rooted
4. Custom rom
Might be interesting. My poll is number 1. The results might give you a clue as to why development is lighter for this device.

Too expensive phone less people buy it less donations less development.
HTC the most expensive phones with no reasons 200 euro more with same specs like others.

Is it really large demand or just really short supply. Google has done this with every phone since the Nexus 4. They have never had enough supply.

Soon will be almost 1 year and no even stable recovery what else to talk about this phone will be soon dead from development.Poor Google your how to say development phones dying.

Good point. Do you think Google cares about devolpment any longer? Or was this a test of how they can now make a great phone that people want who don't care about root? Thus the high cost. I think dev is basically over as you say.

It should basically be the same device with updated hardware specs and Android O. What pitfalls are you referring to? If it's the distribution channel then yes, that was a problem. But as for dev support that assumes the low inventory was the factor mitigating development. I don't believe it was. The device simply doesn't need root to function superbly. That's why I think most of us rooted our Nexus devices, battery life and performance. (well at least I did) Besides, the price was like $300 not $800. Ok, some of us can't live without Adaway or Titanium but you don't need a custom rom for that.

That someone should be you, it was your idea I too am curious about the results. Up until Sunday I was a number 2 (rooted, though). I got bored and flashed a custom ROM but it was not necessary at all. You're correct when you say, this device functions damn near perfectly in its stock configuration. First Android phone I've ever used or owned that I can say that about.

Lol, I've never done a poll here but I guess it's not too hard. I'll give it a shot in a bit. I'll have to word it correctly as well. Thanks for the push.

Will Pixel 2 XL present new challenges?

Factory images will be up soon and first round of devices shipping in weeks. Will 2 XL be similar enough to XL that the lessons learned by Root & Recovery developers on the XL will translate to working root and recovery coming straight away or are new challenges expected?

I remember Pixel 2 will come with Android 8, not 8.1. It should be quite similar for development.

So anyone have an opinion? Will we have Root & Recovery straight away or no?

Not sure about "straight away" but I know Pure Nexus dev @BeansTown106 purchased a 2 XL, so I imagine it'll be up and running as soon as he can cook it up the way he likes.

The entire dev community learned allot with the First Pixel.
I am looking forward to and confident that the Pixel 2XL will be supported.

If you look at the pixel XL Dev forum vs say the s8+ Dev forum, it doesn't look as active or full of custom roms ect. I would of guessed other way around

I hate to agree, but I noticed this also. The amount of development for the Pixel and Pixel XL is a lot less than Nexus phones of past. It seems like the OnePlus and even the LG G* phones are more popular with devs now. I was really surprised to see that after a year there is no offical version of Lineage OS for the original Pixel phones and still complications and difficulties with root and TWRP. The A/B partitions and extra security measures seem to create a lot of complicaitons.
I'm hoping that everything learned with the first Pixel phones will translate into more and better development for the Pixel 2 phones, but I wouldn't bet on it. I also think the high price of the Pixel phones is a barrier for a lot of devs.

They were offered unlocked straight from Google and locked from carriers like Verizon. Early on, an unlocking solution was found for Verizon models but patched with later Nougat update 7.1.2

I'm hoping for good things here but these phones are so good in factory form it will be hard to improve on. Security is also more important as phones have access to everything you have.

They have enough development. If you want 30 ROMs that's the same rehased crap, get a oneplus device.
All you need is some source built aosp

Wish chrome had adblock. That and adfree YouTube are the only things I root for. Maybe we will get lucky and the 2 XL won't have a dual boot partition.

This is great news! Pure Nexus is a great ROM and Beans does a fantastic job with it!

Roms - slow development?

With a semi stable version of twrp and project treble functionality making rom development supposedly simple, curious why is it that we have not a single rom even in it's infancy?
Lack of developers?

Because the minimum price for an XL is 849$. Not to mention all the problems that come along with it.
Development might be very slow. Till the price drops or they have a hardware revision and fix the screen. Not to mention Oreo is still very new.
I didn't buy this phone for development, mines still stock and enjoying it.

I was thinking the same thing, regarding slow ROM development. Kernel development took off immediately and there are a few solid kernel options available. But I'm surprised to see no ROMs available yet.
However, I do think there is some major truth behind the points antiochasylum made. On top of that, root is still in the infancy stage and TWRP is just very recently stable enough to be fully installed. My guess is that ROMs will start being made available in the next couple of weeks.

There is no reason to make a rom for this device. It works well as it is. Most know that by now. No reason to unlock, root, flash, you name it. The reason being there is no benefit. Well we have some font stuff, being able to brick it, and "I want control on my device" things but that is ancient history. Custom roms are basically done.
Stop asking for development if you are not willing to do it yourself.

Sorry to say you do not speak for a large percentage of current users here. Just looking at the activity of the TWRP, Magisk and kernel threads proves you are mistaken.

That and I'm sure some of the devs who will most likely be in our corner don't even have a device yet. Some of them buy a phone based on donations or wait until they see how big the user base is.

Some will come as the stardust settles...

I'd love a rom that gets tethering to work again with VZ. Thinking about returning since I heavily rely on hotspot with my grandfathered plan.

Pfft. OG G1!=P back when you had to destroy a SD card to root.
To the topic at hand. I rooted my pixel 2 XL two days ago. Still trying to figure out why lol. I tweaked the display a tad to make it a little warmer and that's about it. Rooting is about control. ROMs are about customization. And what's left to customize? You going to make the phone faster?
OP5 has lots of development. one yes it's cheaper. But two, it needs it. Trying to improve on the camera. Make it a little snappier. And honestly most of the ROMs over there run worse than stock.
Real ROM development was because most of the time you couldn't get the latest and greatest on your phone. So you get a ROM built off the latest AOSP so you could be running the most recent software. or you were on TouchWiz and wanted vanilla. Those days are dead.
I'm sure in the coming weeks a few ROMs will get cooked together. And the hardcore flashers will install it. Maybe it will be amazing but the simple fact is stock Android is so good the concept of rooting and ROMs is more novelty than necessary at this point

You can. I have og grandfathered Verizon plan and tethering works for me. Had to change the build prop but it works.

I check XDA at least 10 times a day hoping there will be something new to flash lol I can't be the only one who does this. I find myself venturing off into the OnePlus 5 forum from time to time just to look at all the development that's going on in there. Salivating and I'm tempted to purchase the OnePlus 5t but I love the Pixel 2 xl. Tuff choices

I find myself checking xda, but mostly the Q&A and discussion threads. I'd probably sell my old 128 GB XL and buy a 5t if it had universal radios like the Pixel since I'm on Verizon. The 2 XL would likely remain my daily driver, mainly because of the fantastic camera which it seems OnePlus can't compare to.

Once you use the pixel 2 camera nothing else is good enough. I had the pixel 2 but sold it, purchased a 5t, and then turned around and sold it 36 hours in for the pixel 2 XL. I couldn't settle without this camera experience.

I'll stay with my Pixel XL 2 flagship! But hey, go for the 5T if that's your buzz...

I had the same experience but with huawei mate 10 pro,sell it after 24 hours and got back my pixel 2 xl.

I'm in the same crack-flash-aholic boat
Now that I have TWRP, cust kernel, and root on my 2 XL, I'm waiting for Roms.
I'm not interested in the DP versions, so just watching development continue to move forward.
This is the first device I've had in hand prior to any development. It's very cool watching things grow and seeing all the talent, and creativity getting things working (kernels, TWRP, root, etc).
Kudos to everyone involved in getting the development gears turning!

I know,i just referring that the development here is slow cause oreo is a new os and op5t has nougat only for now.

I haven't compiled AOSP from source since Gingerbread, but man...the temptation to try it just to see if it works (and to have something to flash/play with) is getting harder to resist.
Not even sure I could remember how to do it at this point, it's been so long.

I was thinking about this yesterday ironically. I used to flash ROMs a lot back on the Samsung line. Once I got the Pixel XL and XL2 I havent touched either. The stock setup is honestly great as it is. Part of me misses flashing, but like the stability and performance of the Google stock builds. I might be giving up a little with custom kernals but have been completely satisfied with both stock phones.

I tend to feel the same way about the Pixel line. I flashed a few ROMs on the original XL but stability and performance was never quite up to par with stock. I gave up and have been using stock for about about 10 months now.

Indeed do I miss my flashing. I have a OP5 that I will be selling soon since I have received my P2XL. As many have mentioned the OnePlus series of phones have become what the original Nexus line was in terms of community affordability and development.
If I can get Pure Nexus on my P2XL then it would be sufficient for me in all honesty, provides the stability and yet extending the functionality and customizations we all crave for. I understand that Nate‏ @BeansTown106 is caught up with some personal stuff and I'm not sure how or if any new development is in the works. This is one of the absolute best custom ROMs one could use. But us users can only wait and see...

This sounds like some sort of AA Thread lol. I also miss flashing. The need for custom ROMS is definitely dwindling though. I am usually okay with a custom kernel and substratum at this point

Stock rooted works fine for me. I do miss the following:
Back to kill app
Volume button to change track
Everything else I'm able to do to my liking.
Adaway works
Magisk works
Substrate works
And little other stock customizations work.

This is the longest I've had any Android device without routing, and I miss only one thing, back to kill.
AdGuard works perfectly, and I'm about to try Substratum, just need to see how to do it.

Sorry all, I have been using custom roms for a long time, I really don't know what goes into making one, so I apologize for my ignorance. I would think that by now there would be some custom roms for this device. Is it normal to take this amount of time to get a Google phone custom roms?thx in advance.

I'm wondering this as well. I thought it was because of the new display ratio, but those have been out for a while now, AND I was looking around the OP5T forums (because I just got one), and even that has some ROMs posted (though they're kinda alpha-ish), and it came out like a month later. I didn't see a single Pixel 2 XL ROM (and I was so confused I thought I was just somehow missing something).

I check XDA twice a day praying that I'll see Elemental Kernel show up.

For those of you using the stock ROM, what are your plans for migrating once we reach EOL?

As I'm sure we all know here, our beloved Pixel 3 XLs are officially getting dropped by Google in about three weeks. If history repeats itself, though, we will get the Android 12 release in October followed by one last OTA in December. My typical usage pattern with a phone is:
Get the phone and use the stock ROM until the phone reaches EOL.
Once EOL is reached, move to LineageOS.
I know that this is a pattern that some others more or less follow as well, but I was wondering about what variations there are to the pattern. Does anyone here use another ROM? As much as I like LineageOS, I would be more interested in using a ROM that is basically identical to stock Android. I have read about compiling AOSP from source so as to maintain my own ROM that does just that, but from what I understand, that does not work very well for unsupported devices. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Off the top of the head... EOL only means no more official updates or support, ie security fix's...
Your fone working on a custom rom will still work, since you'd think it was the custom rom updated...
If they do stop the fone calling, there's plenty other apks for 'near field' communication

Oh yes, I know that functionality-wise the phone will continue working as before. What I want to know is, what are people considering in regards to custom ROMs?

Kl, well, me, I'm wondering this too just now, because I'm stuck with a system-as-root fone thats a pain, and now there's too many different too choose from, and if they're of the best quality, they now have to cover at least 4 different styles of booting alone, I'd watch those for the ones updating quickest

Well, LineageOS certainly does that, but at the same time, it also takes them about 6 months to move to a new major release of Android. I was hoping that someone would know of a release that does it just as well, but is a little more flexible with migrating. I haven't found any myself.

I've yet to convince myself which version is for my fone lol

I've already moved to LineageOS, simply to get the monthly security updates. I have not seen any functional loss on LineageOS. If you don't feel you need security updates, just stay on the stock ROM, especially if you think you need any Android 12 features. IMO, new Android features simply add more bloat than I want or need. Your opinion may differ.

Not at all, they all sound excellent, however, my fone cant write to the actuall system, can mount, but no joy yet doing anything else, and no overlay works so far, the only custom os I could install was a chrooted nethunter, which was pretty lame and useless being my system as root is a pain... so I'm looking..

My plan, at least for now, is to ride on stock until the last update is pushed, and then once LOS gets updated to 12, I will migrate. The only problem with this, though, is that it would leave me without security updates from the end of December until either March or April, and I am not sure how I feel about that.

My experience might help...Last year I was using a Motorola 5Plus with Pixel Experience Rom and loved it. My phone was fast, stable and highly compatible to the "Pixel Experience". I had a hardware issue and decided I liked the PE so much, I went ahead and got a Pixel 3xl...I've never had such a seamless transition...was just faster with better hardware but almost no thought changing for different mechanisms of actions...
I'm hoping someone picks up PE and ports it to the 3XL and I'll use that....otherwise, any alternative suggestions for closest to "stock" Pixel would be appreciated...

Yeah I have seen PixelExperience and would really like to use it over LOS if the 3 XL gets support. As far as I know, the 2 XL did not receive support until it's EOL, so there's hope. Is the feature parity as spot-on as is claimed?

For the features and functions I use, it was almost totally seamless...it was less than a typical release level amount of change (e.g.: 10->11 was more than I experienced PE -> P-3xl)
YMMV however...based on what features/functions you use most heavily.

GREAT...be sure to use the AOSP version ... there are a couple of flavors of PE but IMHO the AOSP version is the closest to the stock 3xl ...
If you don't mind guiding me a little over the rough patches, I'd be willing to help test your creation once you're out of alpha<G>...(my 3xl is my daily driver)... specifically, I'm used to having TWRP available for the maintenance/management of the ROM and if I understand it properly, TWRP isn't used / available for the 3xl ROM's...

For now, I would like to hold off on it. I don't really see a point in putting effort in to building PE for the 3 XL when we're about two weeks away from the next major Android release, at which point, PE will need reworked by the dev team. If the 3 XL is not picked up by someone else in the modding community at release time, and I've seen some people that think it will be, then I will start researching it.

Sounds like a plan...will keep an eye on development threads for it once it goes out of support.

Even though the last update will be in Dec I'll probably keep using the 3XL until the 7 comes out (or 6a maybe). I just had the battery replaced a couple months ago, and there is nothing wrong with the phone. I usually use devices until EOL hits, and then upgrade when the next OS/phone comes out, so whatever device I'm using at any given time is on the current OS release (IE: 3XL on Android 12 until Android 13 drops, and then upgrade phone to get Android 13).

I would like to use that method, but I think it's too expensive, so I try to settle for "my phone's basically dead."

I don't know how to tell if it is still in effect. I see photos counted against my storage allotment, but don't know if that is just for my previous phones, or if it includes the Pixel photos.
My guess is you would have to use the Google Camera and Photo apps to keep unlimited upload, if it can be kept with LineageOS.
