Grainy white noise screen with working touch input - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have to following problem:
My HTC One M8 has colorful grainy static screen and sometimes the picture turns off, like a cable is loose. I read all the forums and search google all over for a solution, most of them claimed that after a panel replace it will be fine. I switched the whole front panel for a new one, but after assembly i have the same problem. The phone is working, because i can unlock the screen lock, turn off the phone, i get the notifications and everything, but the screen is just static noise. I'm assuming that maybe it is some graphic fault, but not related to the lcd panel or the cables (they are all brand new, and i double checked all of them). Is the logic board responsible for the image? What should i try to replace next the upper motherboard, or the middle logic board?

I've got the exact same thing here.... Searched a lot around without finding anything that has resolved my case. I ordered a replacement screen for a cracked screen on the first phone, but when I tested the LCD before I assembled everything together it was showing just noise like in your picture. I assumed the LCD was bad, so I ordered a new one. But the new one was acting exactly the same.
Yesterday, I was approached by another one who needed help with their M8, and that phone needed to have its volume buttons replaced. So, I reused the parts from the old M8, but when I booted the phone after repair, it showed this same noisy screen as the first M8 I tried to repair. Anyone here that knows these phones and what is going on here? I'm pretty sure I have 3 working LCD's here now, and suspect something strange going on with the mainboard or controller for screen.
Anyone?

Can't allign my screen.

Hey guys!
I'm experiencing a very strange and annoying issue with my BA, and I was wondering if I could get some input from you.
So, here goes:
The touchscreen (not LCD) in my unit was broken, and thus I decided to fix it. I purchased a new one off eBay a few weeks ago, and just yesteday I proceeded to install it. To my surprise, something seems to have gone wrong.
I power up the unit, make my way into "Allign screen", and then the last "cross" that I have to touch rarely clicks in. On the other hand, when it does get detected, it simply restarts the alligning process.
What I've tried so far:
- allign right after installation -> no luck
- hard reset (on WM2k5_v4_R2.1) -> no luck again
- opened up the unit again, repositioned the screen -> nothing
- upgraded to Logout_WM2K5_5.4.03_HN -> still nothing
Right now I'm out of ideas, and I was hoping somebody here has some. Do you think the new touchscreen might be flawed ? I'm already discussing this issue with the seller.
Thanks for reading
New touchscreen or a refurb? Same type? (toppolly / sony) Sounds like it's been stripped from an old unit to me as it's not recognising the taps in the right places - can you see somehting like a liquid spill anywhere on the panel? This is what it looks like when the overlay touches the glass.

That was in fact my auction. Looked like brand spanking new to me, not one single stylus mark, and also had the protective sheet on. Of course, I might be wrong
Also, no liquid spill visible anywhere.

I bought from him also and am yet to fit - I got the completley wrong module :-(
Richard
What do you mean wrong module ? The "tip" of the flex cable ? Mine seems to match with what was already there ...
Hey NSD!
I purchased the exact same module for my Himalaya device, after the touchscreen being cracked.
My father, who is an electronic engineer, soldered the flat wire from the touchscreen onto the rear side of the LCD with normal copper wires. Unfortunately I have the exact same problem a you!
After attaching the entire LCD (+touchscreen) onto the mainboard, and supplying power from the battery, I'm not able to go past the Align Screen section!!!
The touchscreen is from the manufacture 'Asian Media' (I think so...).
It can't be a coincidence, that both of our touchscreens don't respond to tapping!!!
Anybody been able to get this problem fixed??
Any help would be appreciated!!!
Kind Regards,
Tony Schattat
I never replaced the touchscreen of my BA but I have replaced the screen of my ex ipaq 6315 once.
And one thing that I know is that sometimes the screen align process is different from the normal, I mean, it keeps repeating and repeating again many times....until the unit finally passes the align step and finishes the configuration. Actually I´ve "aligned" the screen more than 30 x (when I replaced the screen).
It happened just once and then I had a completely normal unit.

.:: HELP Appreciated ::. Universal - WHITE SCREEN Problem...

.:: HELP Appreciated ::.
Hello Tech GURUS,
I returned from a long tour (I kept my XDA EXEC at home) & found that my XDA EXEC has got a problem of WHITE SCREEN!! Nothing is Displayed!!
May be brother's childrens or anyone of my friend accidentally did it in my absence(Sorry I'm NOT Sure). May be they pivoted (Turned) the screen in a WRONG DIRECTION!
That doesn't matter WHO DID IT, But the problem screwed my head & I started to trace the problem.
Symptoms:
1) Only WHITE SCREEN(with LCD Backlight), Nothing Else.
2) Charges perfectly through USB & also from Charger.
3) When I connects it to ACTIVE SYNC, it Syncs fine & I can able to explore the files/folders. Copy from & to the handset memory is also works fine.
4) Tried to enter into BOOTLOADER Mode(by pressing Light+Power+Reset), there also got a BLANK SCREEN (NO LCD Backlight).
5) TOUCH SCREEN detects TAPs & make sounds (Tick Tick), That indicates Touch Screen Working fine.
6) Qwerty KeyBoard Works fine. I don't know at what extent, since I can't see nothing on screen. But when I press a key on QWERTY Kbrd, it sounds Tick.
7) Transfered(Beamed) a CONTACT from my another XDA IIi & found Its accepted the beamed data.
8) Volume Up/Down make sounds (Tick, Tick...).
What I Did:
1) Removed the Battery & re-inserted & tried to BOOT it. NO result, just a WHITE SCREEN.
2) Purposely Tried to Rotate the Screen in Wrong Direction to test the loose contacts of co-axial cable.
3) Lastly Dis-Assembled the whole handset (Removed all parts 100%) & Re-Assembled it. But the Problem remains SAME.
4) Dis-Assembled again & this time I tested the LCD Co-Axial Cable's connectivity from MainBoard side connector to LCD Side Connector. There are 2 Cables which connects to LCD. One is 30 Cores Cable & Second one is 40 Cores Cable.
I Successfully tested 30 Cores Cable(Actually it used only 28cores cable, remaining 2 points at connector are DUMMY) & Second 40 Cores Cable I'm UNABLE to Test Since I lost my patience while connecting my Testing Meter to Hair Line sized cores & in just an 10mm connector got 40 cores!!!
5) Observed all cores which passes through SCREEN ROTATOR BASE Hinges & found there is NO physical Damage or CORE CUT.
CAN ANYONE HELP ME TO SOLVE THIS WHITE SCREEN PROBLEM?
IS IT A HARDWARE BASED PROBLEM? OR SOFTWARE BASED?
IS IT A PROBLEM WITH DISPLAY CHIP(IC) ON MAINBOARD?
JUST CONFUSED & SEEKING HELP FROM TECH GURUS.
THANKS IN ADVANCE.

This seems to be a hardware problem. Check connectors in the display housing first. This unit is quite easy to disassemble.
Before you start, you should have a look in the universal SERVICE MANUAL to check out how it gets torn apart .
If all connectors to the display are right in place, but your display still shows nothing ...open the universal body too.
Folow the steps in the manual

White Screen
Hello, this is my first post. May I first just say how great I think this site is, the guides on here really are useful to beginners.
With regard to the white screen, not sure if this helps, but during dismantling of my various PDAs, I managed to connect an LCD ribbon incorrectly, I kind of forced it in & folded one contact over, resulting in white screen. Disconnected, straightened & refit. Hey presto, works like a charm. Hope this helps.
I had the issue, had to buy a new flat cable
It is rare to actually see the damage to the cable, because the damage is inside the insulation....
Best regards!
On the topic...
Hello!
I have a similar issue with my Orange SPVm5000, except that mine will work for up to a minute after a hard reset before going to a white screen.
If I hard reset pressing the left+right+reset keys, the device shows the boot screen and sometimes ever goies into the initial setup but then all of a sudden it goes white. I've opened up the screen and verified and reconected all connections but still the problem persists. Also I've noticed that its not any action I make that causes it; more like a heat/timing issue. Per advice above, I will check the connections in the body but does anyone have any other ideas?!?
Thanks!
Greg.
I have a similar problem. The story;
I purchased an orange branded M5000 on flebay described as second hand in fantastic condition blaa blaa.
When the phone eventualy turned up it had no manual, the outer sleeve of the box was missing and the wrong usb cable was supplyed (one of those larger usb plugs you usualy get for printers.
I have shedlooads of cables and rely wasn't bothered about any of these problems at the time and went about charging the phone (it was totaly flat)
When fully charged I stuck my sim in and poweded her up the phone works fine in portrate and landscape view but as you rotate the screen so it is inline with the keyboard the screen fades to white about half way.
I contacted the seller who basicly told me the phone is second hand so sold as seen!?!?!?
I have flashed various roms on it to see if it was a software fault but nothing.
I think this phone had been in storage as its battery was totaly flat and incorrect accessories suggest the seller didn't check it before shipping. So I believe there is a problem with this phone that occurs when stored.
Sorry for the long post
Have you flashed any rom or just had this problem ...
my conclusions:
1. If you have flashed a new rom to your universal, try to reflash the original rom, it works for many users.
2. If you havent flashed any rom, maybe its a hardware problem.
2.1 If you just used it in a bad way, (ie: rotate screen in wrong way), dissamble it..
2.2 If you have let it on a heat, weat, etc.. place.. maybe the mainboard got a cut-circuit.
Saludos
I tryed a couple of popular WM6 roms (I forget whitch ones) and returned to the genuine Orange WM5 rom. So I doubt its a software fault.
As far was extreme conditions go the phone was well packaged when posted I will gove that to the seller SO unless the eposure happened before shipping I don't think thats to blame ether.
I think the wire in the swivle joint is failing and will continue to get worse as the joint is exercised.
Try to clear it up..

Sounds like the image could not be loaded completely.
The framebuffer is initialized correctly after cold boot, but afterwords booting into wince fails.
So maybe it's pure software issue (flash content is corupt -> image is broken).
Other possibility: Some region of your flash is damaged (more hardware related).

Looks to me like a typical cable issue. Maybe someone twisted the screen the wrong way!
So this is what i guess at least.

White screen
99 % of these white screen faults is a typical cable issue. And you don't have to twist your screen wrong way to have this problem, also.... just twist it too often First you have to see if the device is working, apart the screen.... call the number of your phone see if it is just screen related problem. Broken display cable will leave your device oprational, you just don't see the image.
I know it is "less painfull" for people to think it is a software problem.... (The "it would not happen to me" syndrome ) but sometimes things just brake, and moving parts are most risky...
The fact you don't see the damage is of no importance due to the size and nature of the damage. Don't expect to see broken wires in the cable. And even if you check the cable by you instrument, somethimes it will show you it's ok, but in some positions it will loose contact.
Try a different cable... that way you'll be sure.
Best regards, and all the luck!

I agree and luckily, finally paypal do as well.
It is being boxed up to a red faced seller as we speak.
A happy ending for me (speaking to soon?)
i hav the same problem as u "HELLCRUSHER" and i flashed also but was not able to cure
still hav this white screen ..
Found this link for some where selling the screen cable assmebly.

Replaced desire AMOLED screen - Still blank

After dropping my desire the screen had an obvious crack (no crack in the glass/digitiser) and displayed crazy colours from the crack, spreading across the screen over the course of the day until finally going completely blank.
Bought a new screen on ebay, same part number, same samsung AMOLED. Replaced today and the phone exhibits exactly the same behaviour. Switches on, digitiser works to the extent I can unlock and lock the phone, but screen is constant black. After a few switch on/offs the screen showed two green lines at the top and about half way down upon unlocking, that went away after another lock and unlock.
Pretty confident that the disassemble/assemble went ok and I didnt stress any flex connectors or similar... so have no idea what could still be wrong....
As I say, phone boots and can unlock/lock (makes the right noises etc) and is recognised by computer when plugged in.
Could using the phone until the screen completely stopped working have broken the controller or something?
Any input greatly appreciated.....
EDIT:
Just switched it on again, green line at top from keyboard lighting point, then the whole screen went blue on unlock. :S
This sound like a dying something, or maybe just bad contacts? Find it strange that unlocking has an effect....
Might be a bad connection or little shortcut?
Here is an official video on how to assemble and disassemble the device, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768535. Don't know if that helps but you can check if you did something wrong in the progress.

Seeing as the part was shipped from my country and had the exact same markings and serial numbers as the part I removed, I dont think this is the issue.
Thanks for the video, will disassemble and clean all contacts later today.
Was mainly posting to see if people had heard of/experienced the same issue, trying to ascertain whether it could be a faulty replacement or if its possible to break the hardware that runs the screen.
A good fake can be hard to tell apart from an OEM part...
So the consensus is that its a fake replacement? Really? The screen seems identical in all markings and connectors, my only conclusion can be it came from the same factory. What market would there be in producing defective replicas of mobile phone components?
Anyway I have sent the screen back to the seller for a replacement.
Any response to my other questions? Is it possible to damage the hardware that drives the screen by using the phone with a dying screen to the point of blank display?
Reading through another thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933866
Post #6 suggests the rom on the phone could have an effect, is this the case?
Thanks for any input.
Rom couldn't be the issue if you've installed the exact same screen.
My guess would be a loose connector.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
My desire lives!
Replacement screen worked just fine....
Thanks for everyones responses!
Can you post the link to the seller on ebay, from whom you bought the display?

[Q] Just replaced digitizer and home button and left side of screen arent working

A customer brought her G2 on simple mobile to me with this problem: The letter "A" wont work on portrait mode nor will the home key. I figured it was the digitizer so I replaced that with an OEM Replacement part and as soon as we booted back up the problem was still there. Could it be her OS is corrupt or possibly a warp in the case thats keeping the plate from contacting the faceplate. I'm rather stumped as I ran a logcat and I saw nothing out of the ordinary during normal input. Any help is appreciated.
Touch plate? I am confused to what you mean by this. I am not too familiar with the electronic construction of a digitizer so any info would be helpful.
The digitizer isn't coming in contact with the face plate I believe. (Sorry I used like three different words to describe the same thing in my previous post) Any tips on how to fix that would be great. I saw a video on youtube that stated a part where a heat gun would be used but I never came across a front panel (The part with "T-mobile" on it so I installed the digitizer and went along). I think I may have messed up.
i have the same problem, i dropped the phone, and the touch screen was broken, i replaced it but now the left side and home button arent worksing
ps the broken screen worked still also on the left side , did you find a solution ?
I have the same problem.
I believe it's the ribbon cable, not the Digitizer. The ribbon cables on this phone hangs between both screens and is fairly exposed at times.
I still have a couple weeks in my warranty to return it to HTC, but I can't get it to S-on. Unless I get S-on before warranty is up, I'm going to have to replace it myself.
Ribbon cables for this phone cost ~$30 on ebay. tell me if you fix it.
Any luck with this, anyone?

Hi,
Only thing I can think of is that somehow it has damaged the cable from the touchscreen or the tiny wires that feed into the cable without damaging the screen. I came across a brand new screen I was replacing once for someone that had a similar problem where the bottom left hand corner wouldn't respond to touch unless there was firm pressure on the screen to create contact, and this was a brand new screen. It could also be that the touchscreen connector needs to be pushed back onto the board if it's come a bit loose.
If this is the problem, you can fix it by yourself although I'd have a good look around youtube, there are heaps of DIY videos of how to replace screens. If you do go down this path I recommend you replace the touchscreen/LCD/LCD frame in one go, as it's generally already pre- assembled the only thing here is that there are 3 brands of LCD's HTC used with the phone and they aren't all compatible, and you can only tell by pulling down your phone and looking at the LCD flex cable colours, and the other thing is that the screens that are available aren't always the same quality as the original. If this sounds to hard your best bet is to take it somewhere and diagnose the problem just in case it's something else
