Stable - Daily Driver capable ROMs? - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I hate asking this question but I need to update from my S4 because I want a better camera, and faster CPU so I can't try the roms directly
I am looking at the Note 4 or Galaxy S5. Unfortunately the S5 looks like it has more active support, but I really want a Note 4 because of the better hardware (basically everything, UHS Storage, more RAM, CPU, bigger battery, Optical Stabilization...)
What ROMs are you all running as a daily driver? I've been searching and it doesn't look like there are a ton of super stable ROM's in active support like with the S5
I prefer AOSP but stability is most important to me (having a fully functional phone). My least favorite thing in the world is when my GPS stops working right when I need to take a turn in chaotic traffic

I ain't gonna get into a whole Rom comparison story, again. But i will state this. The N4 is an awesome phone, straight up, nothing compares to it. I just bought another one. But as it is aging, development on it is slowing down, But there are a handful of great devs still here with amazing work. I use to also like aosp for its lean state but i would have to say touchwiz is less error prone. Only my opinion though!
I can't compare it with the s5 development , never looked there.

Came from a s5... No regrets.
Note 4 is superior.

Thanks for responding fellas.
Are you both running the stock Samsung firmware??
I dont know if I can handle TouchWiz, but at the same time I don't think I can give up the Note 4 hardware (over the s5).
I think I'm going to pick one up and play with it. If none of the AOSP roms is stable enough for me, I'll stick with a model TouchWiz rom or go back to stock. I'll update this when I figure out that part!
EDIT:
Well shoot - I managed to snag an S5 for $60 on ebay - sight un-seen. From one of those larger used phone re-sellers
Probably half as cheap but I am going to sorely miss OSS from the Note 4, increased battery, quick charge, and UHS storage. I figure I can sell my S4 off, and upgrade to a Note 4 in the future.
Good news is that Lineage OS is officially supported on the Sprint S5, ASOP is a huge reason that I love Android (and kind of loathe Samsung)

I have a Sprint Note 4 for sale for $150. Combined with the OBAR Rom and a ZeroLemon 10,000 mah battery this phone is a tank. Mine just ate dirt after I updated it to 6.0.1. DO NOT UPDATE. Two days after the update I got EMMC error (Nand died) and now anyone else I speak to about the 6.0.1 update killed their phone. I bought two Note 4's and put OBAR back on it. No issues and everything runs fast and smooth.

Hell I have updated, and down graded my phone numerous times, and phone still rock solid.. I went back to 5.1.1 because it is faster, battery life can't be beat, plus you do not have to give permission each time you install a app.. Also I can get rid of all Sprint bloat ware without using a 3rd party app. I also like the square icons rather than the rounded, and the icon size is perfect.

Asked in another thread, hoping tha can help with this....
Have modembase pg1 with mm.
Tha_Dynasty.... Thoughts on if heading over to hybrid 3.0 will have an impact on signal reliability?
Came from s5 and I keep getting dropped signals... In places where I didn't have an issue before.
Tha... Any thoughts?

Well PG1 is MM (6.0) so if you wanna stay on it id look for a MM rom
how ever Hybrid 3.0 is LP (5.1) and yes my signal is much better on 5.1 than 6.0 but each phone is different
but for me hybrid is perfect no random reboots and been using it as a daily driver for a lil more than a full year
and it plays nice with xposed... can help if you need it.
the op will have the necessary steps to revert back to 5.1 if need be :good:

Im running the ultimate note 7 hybrid Rom 6.1
Lately it's been seeming sluggish
You all still think 5.1 is fastest or most stable combination?

I was on 6 with my Note 4 and Note edge. I cant downgrade from Marshmallow on the Edge, so I went back to the 4 since you go all the way back to kit kat. Note 4 + 5.1.1 + Hybrid Rom + xposed = happiness

Considering buying a Gpad, couple of questions.

I am thinking about a new tablet since mine got water damage. I want the new Nexus tab, but if I can get this for the right price I will have it as a backup with the Nexus comes out.
Hows Battery Life?
Is it possible to install the GPE software and how easy is it?
Anything I should know about the pad since I havent looked into it at all, just love the size and want on screen buttons so Sammy devices are out.

Regarding the battery life, for the price, its not really bad. I would recommend rooting it right away though to increase the battery life. Using stock, I was able to get about 6-7 hours playing The MMO, Avabel, which is pretty intensive graphics wise. I would recommend installing slimkat ROM + greenify to further increase battery life. Havent been able to test how much improvement I got as I let my wife borrow it for a while.
Regarding your second question, I believe you want to convert the regular V500 to the GPE V510 version. There have already been numerous threads on the forums discussing this. So far, it looks like some radios are not working, most notably, WIFI. and is buggy. You can do a search on the forums to view the current status. What I am using is Slimkat, which is pretty close to AOSP and very good when it comes to battery life.
Regarding the last question, I've had mine for only 2 weeks and thus far, Im enjoying it. the bazels are small, the tablet itself feels well made, and performance wise, its pretty good for its current price point. On the negative side, the speakers doesn't sound very nice and are at the back. Would have been better if it was on the front. The screen is not too bright when using outdoors, and the camera is pretty crappy (although we don't really use the tablet as a camera as often as a smartphone so shouldn't be a biggy). However I got mine for about $225 (US) brand new and for the price point, I can hardly find anything save for the nexus 7 that can beat it, performance wise. Ran an antutu benchmark right after installing slimkat on it and actually scores higher than the note 2. Not bad for a $225 tablet, in full HD.
Hope this helps.
Firstly, I love it!!
Still makes me laugh that it's called GPad (lawsuit from Apple anyone)
Battery is better than my mobile ph ^^
Build quality is awesome!!
Mine was dirt cheap (brand new) $299 NZD.
Apparently there's a brightness bug (haven't noticed yet)...
Getting it rooted and ready for custom roms is/was a bit of a mission (if you OTA update to 4.4.2, mine came with 4.2.2 on board).
A few custom roms available - much of a muchness at present.
Needs some custom rom variety, for sure.
If you can get it cheap (like me) I'd jump at the chance!

Yeah it definitely could use more custom ROMS. Unfortunately though it doesn't look like there are too many devs interested yet. Hopefully the demand gets higher. My slimkat doesn't even have a stable release yet. On their official page, it says no tester or something like that. There are some CM nightlies, pac man, and CMB roms available though. Tried CMB but has some app compatibility issues so went with AOSP-based ROM for maximum compatibility.

There's a gpad on Craigslist for $200 nearby and didn't see any gpe on swappa. I know it's fairly easy to make the M8 run gpe software, so I was curious if it's as easy for the gpad

You can run GPE ROM on V500, but it's not really useable. WiFi doesn't work. Hardware is just enough different that drivers won't work. Devs spent a lot of time on this early this year and hit a brick wall. I sold my V500 and purchased a GPE, and I don't regret the change. Keep watching swappa and eBay. One will show up before long.

Ive tried CMB. CM based ROMS are awesome, but the app incompatibility is a deal breaker for me because a few of my apps are in that list. So I stayed with slimkat AOSP based ROM. Never looked back ever since. If only franco kernel is compatible with our tablet, im all set.
Well maybe if the GPE ROM gets ported if and whenever that will happen
EDIT: Im also looking for a fix for the brightness bug on my slimkat. The LEDs appear off but I just double tap my power button to fix anyway. Not really a major peeve for me. Though a fix is very much welcome

Should I buy LG G3??

Should I buy this phone?? I heard that there is battery drain issue. And how many no contract varients are there? I'm a flasholic. I'd love to mod my phone and get the latest android! Is that snapdragon 801 processer future proof? I like this phone bcoz it shoot lasers!
No, i came from Nexus 5 and I miss it very hard. G3 is still laggy. N5 worked like a charm. I'll switch to the next 5" Nexus.

Ditto
stock rom, rooted, TWRP installed. flashed modified stock-based kernel, cleaned some bloatware, installed 2g-3g switcher (via exposed) and I get day and a half of moderate usage with 3-4 hours SOT and no overheating... not bad, but also not ideal. one should not have to tinker with a new phone to get it working properly. but that said, now I'm satisfied. and it cost me half of the price of G4....
I bought it used for cheap. I like it but it's very laggy compared to my S5. Everything takes time to do. Taking a picture in low light automatically activates night mode so it takes a few seconds to be able to take another picture, sad. It also heats up quite a lot quite fast. Battery life is good but not while taking pictures, so I imagine when gaming it's terrible as well.
I don't want to install a custom ROM to make it run smooth and without overheating. LG did a bad job and are unable to fix it. Not sure why..
I'll keep my Galaxy S5.
I just came from the galaxy S5. Rooted and flashed blisspop as soon as i got it and it is awesome. Battery life is equal to that of the S5 running stock, just much faster. Probably the fastest rom I've ever used. I personally prefer this phone to the S5, much better than I expected. I just love the big sharp screen. I say get one, flash blisspop, and you'll love it.

Which Rom & Kernel Are You Hoping To Flash On You Nexus 5X ?

For those of you who will unlock the bootloader & root your brand new 5X. Which rom & kernel combination are you hoping to flash (either based on previous experience or from what you have heard) ?

Am i the only person that stopped rooting and flashing roms when they got their n5? I used every top of the line Android phone on T-Mobile, was a flash addict. Got my n5, it was perfect, and people were talking about how rooting the n5's were showing slower data speeds. I didn't want to chance slower speeds and vanilla Android runs too good to play with. Missed the addons from other roms but it wasn't worth it me.

I am going to be unrooted and completely stock, like you. Marshmallow added in features that makes custom ROMs less of an appeal to me. I would like Android Pay to work
From what I can see Nexuses have no real need to have a custom rom installed (compared to other smartphones). Also Android Pay will not work if rooted.
Would people agree ?

What are the benefits of Android Pay ?
Being in Canada and not being eligible for Android pay there is no adverse affect of rooting. Ideally would be running stock + xposed/gravitybox but one can only speculate when that will be available on 6.0. Until then something ASOP or stock based that includes extended reboot menu, circle battery mod, multiwindow, and additional quick setting toggles

You can be embarrassed holding up the checkout line trying to use Android Pay while your pay card rests in your back pocket. The only use I ever see for this stuff is if you actually forget your card. Then it's great to be able to pay with a phone. And at a drive-thru or restaurant, they take your card.
Cataclysm ROM -PERIOD!
Hands down smoothest ROM I have ever used on any Nexus phone, including stock Google. It is a little different but has everything I could ever want. The battery life is amazing. I've tried others, but have stayed with Cataclysm with my N5 2013.

I'm usually stock with some kernel like franco or elemetnalx.
Also, I love GravityBox but I guess we'll have to wait a long time for that to work on M.
I'd be looking for put SlimROM on there as soon as possible, I have it all customised just the way I like it on my Nexus 5.
Hopefully none. I didn't get to play around with Marshmallow yet and I hope the new features are enough to make me stay stock. I'm a big fan of CM's Privacy Guard and I want to see how extensive the new Marshmallow one is, that and quick toggles customization. If I'm not satisfied, I'll probably flash CM 13 nightlies when they're available.

Where are all the ROMS?

I currently have a nexus 5 and I'm looking to upgrade. The G4 looks like a great option as it have more RAM better processor, better screen and mainly an SD SLOT!!!! I currently am getting by with 16GB which is then around 10GB usuable. My question is is this phone worth getting considering I would like a custom ROM. I'd be happy with CM12 but there doesn't look like much support, I can get this phone pretty cheap but I'm not sure as the support just doesn't seem to be here. Anyone with this phone got any advice? Look elsewhere or buy it?

I recently switched to the G4 (H811) from the S6 Edge back in October. I would consider it a good upgrade. The official CM updates are already rolled out and I've been using it as a daily driver even through the buggy (not complaining) Alpha and Beta stages. As a lot of other users have already stated, most of us considered the stock ROM good enough, especially with Marshmallow rolling out pretty soon. The only reason I switched to CM 12.1 was for the near stock look and the lag in the stock ROM. I've heard good things about the CTT MOD, eliminating lag involving thermal throttling. I used MicroMod777's debloated stock ROM. It ran smoother than stock in my experience. I'll be happy to answer anymore questions you have, given my experience with the device.

Thanks a lot. I really like this phone however I don't like stock. I am happy with CM12 though as it has all the features I use. How stable is CM? Are the bugs ironed out now? How is battery life and heat issues? What type of lag is it? Scrolling lag or gaming? I saw the mod but didn't read too much into it, also is over clocking an option via kernels?

Thanks a lot. I really like this phone however I don't like stock. I am happy with CM12 though as it has all the features I use. How stable is CM? Are the bugs ironed out now? How is battery life and heat issues? What type of lag is it? Scrolling lag or gaming? I saw the mod but didn't read too much into it, also is over clocking an option via kernels?

CM is pretty stable so far, good enough for a daily driver. Trebuchet crashes every now and then and I've noticed some issues with the camera (besides the actual camera app, that's just AOSP camera in general). I'm not complaining, nor rushing the devs, but it's easily usable as a daily driver. To sum it up, bugs are present, but not bad. Battery life is iffy, I can get through an entire day with 2 batteries and sometimes a charge. I'd say it's around 3 hours SOT. Heat issues are way worse on the stock ROM, nothing too bad so far on CM. Lag on CM is little things like scrolling or keyboard animations, and apps crashing now and then. I haven't tried much gaming. Over clocking is possible.
if you guys use CM custom rom, which app use for camera? is the CM camera apps as good as stock to use all features of the G4 camera? or you don't care about photos, you just need other features covered by CM rom?

I currently have a nexus 5 and I'm looking to upgrade. The G4 looks like a great option as it have more RAM better processor, better screen and mainly an SD SLOT!!!! I currently am getting by with 16GB which is then around 10GB usuable. My question is is this phone worth getting considering I would like a custom ROM. I'd be happy with CM12 but there doesn't look like much support, I can get this phone pretty cheap but I'm not sure as the support just doesn't seem to be here. Anyone with this phone got any advice? Look elsewhere or buy it?

I think the issue is because of the bootloader and the fact that there are only 2 variants which is can be unlocked on.
I know CandySix is coming to the G4 though :good:

The other features are worth losing the camera. It's still great for regular pictures but don't expect a DSLR replacement. They're still working on getting the G4 Camera ported to the ROM.

you can use other 3rd party camera apps but you lose some features like night shot which is used by front camera as well.
also shutter time will not be more than 0.5s, stock goes up to 30s.
Its not clear to me how CM will make use of the colour sensor and laser AF. Are shots as quick to take, are they as clear.
Low light on auto ? this is buggy right now from the few samples i saw.
Whether unlocking bootloader automatically disables these features is not clear. Because if it does then its a one way process. You lose it forever.

exactly
So much easier to just get a nexus isn't it.

You get 3h sot on cm or stock ?
regardless you should be getting more, on stock.
3-4h on data, 4-5h on wifi. If your brightness is 25% you can add an extra hour in there. This is normal with stock and greenify.
If you can't get that then you need a reset.
I've seen very little to no benefits accruing to battery life by rooting, roms or exposed. if you must go down that route its about features.

3h SOT on CM, less on stock. That's with greenify and screen at around 30% brightness. I'm not going to complain to CM development for those numbers, but I'll try one of the debloated stock ROMs and report back after a few days. Thanks for the advice.

Looks like a ghost town to me. Compare that forum to the equivalent G3 forum, even at the current date in 2014, and it was way more lively.
With every passing day it looks more and more like the G4 has been abandoned. I guess you can't blame the devs, LG are being pricks about the bootloader.

Pretty clear there is not much to choose from and even then they seem to have bugs. This was a genuine question no need to be cocky although I'm sure it makes you feel superior.
Thanks a lot guys, it was basically a choice between the G4 or a Sony Z5 both have little support, obviously the Z5 has only just been released so it's to be expected. I'm just a little disappointed as the G4 seemed so perfect for me hardware wise vs price, plus the fact the G4 uses the 808 as opposed to the 810 which has overheating problems. The Moto X pure is looking like a possibility for this reason now. I tend to keep my phones fairly long so I need something quite stable. I think I will hold off for now until support for the phones I'm interested in grows, unless I see something really cheap in the black Friday sales
Thank you for your help everyone, I appreciate it!!

I'm in the exact same boat man, G4 looks like the perfect phone in terms of hardware but the software situation is just depressing. We'll see how things pan out once Marshmallow has made it to all G4s, but if thing don't pick up I'll have to look elsewhere.

The Moto X pure has very similar hardware to the G4, if it's within your budget I'd suggest looking there once the phone has been out awhile and gained support.

if you can't get those figures in stock then Cm can't do more.
debloated if you have a carrier rom, its not necessary otherwise.
How long you had the device ?
People that can't get beyond 3h sot need a reset. something is running more than it needs to. a reset fixes it. dont just do a plain restore after, install apps in small batches and monitor.

Heavy usage. I got better in CM than stock. I've had the T-Mobile G4 since around late September. And yes, I need the debloated ROM because my stock H811 ROM is the carrier one. I've also noticed less lag on it with animations, particularly the keyboard pop-up ones.

Ah, then 3-4hrs of sot is normal.
was testing with youtube and speakers on max. 1 hr of youtube eats up around 27%. 3hrs of youtube like that and its recharge time.
With bluetooth it drops to 20%. Must be some more savings with wired speakers.
with screen off and just podcasts its 10%/hour.
So far the heaviest usage is recoding with 4k. Do that for 90 minutes and the battery is flat.

I'm actually not sure, I'm almost always using it. It drains around 10% over night (about 7 hours) if I forget to plug it in. That's on the CM ROM.
Bootloader is still annyoing to unlock for most models/ not possible, also this phone has so many different models.
On top of that we got from Lolipop to MM quite fast which may also be a reason for the lack of roms.
If I'd be a Dev I'd rather not put too much effort in Lolipop roms for the G4 if MM is right around the corner.
Dunno maybe it will get better now

EmotionOS vs NSeven -- Thoughts?

Hey all,
I'm aware that these are 2 very different roms, but they seem to be the kings for our VZW Note 4s right now if you are trying to stay up to date in regards to android.
The former being vanilla based, while the latter being samsung based (as if samsung decided to keep supporting our phone to the latest software).
Has anyone tried both? So far i've only played with EmotionOS and i'm blown away by the "quickness" of it. However, there are definitely some things missing and also some instabilities compared to stock.
I'm curious about trying NSeven, but am wondering about the stability compared to EmotionOS, as well as other "high-level" observations some of you may had.
Share!
Emotion is unstable. When battery falls down to about 50% it will randomly reboot, then continue rebooting until battery is drained. Have not tried NSeven.
Emotion os / Android 7.1.1 is beautiful even with some bugs!!! I'm just so tired of TouchWiz.. I use my note 4 only at home without a sim card because of the bugs...
Other than a few bugs, emotions is my daily driver.

I have tried both, but I always end up back at nseven. I haven't had any issues with it and it has been my daily driver for weeks. OK, yes the finger scanner doesn't work, but honestly, the thing didn't work that well ever, not like my S7, I love how that finger scanner works. Also, the always on doesn't work, but since that was a Moto thing, and I haven't had a Moto phone for a couple of years, I don't miss what I haven't had. Other than a few minor quirks, which every rom has, the Nseven is great. You may be wondering what sets it apart from the emotion build? Well at first the only thing that I noticed was the la k of the connection to my watch, the gear S2, but that was easily worked around and connected just fine. Then it happened, I tossed my phone on the bed, and the pen popped out, my phone did nothing. I realized then, that my phone didn't even know it had a pen in it, furthermore, it didn't know how to use it. Now this isn't a huge deal, I don't use my pen all that much, so I stuck it out, kept running emotion, but I realized that I do use my pen just enough to make this inconvenient. So yes there are some work around and there are some fixes, but none of them are quite convienent as stock. Anyway, there is a new build of Nseven coming soon, not sure what changes or fixes there will be, but I will run it when it comes out.

I don't seem to have this problem. I had it with my original battery and once I replaced it it's been fine.

I'm tired of TouchWiz too.. But I think an note 7 version would be a nice upgrade for now. I'm curious how natural that rom feels on the note 4
I have the nseven rom and much prefer it over the emotion rom. The nseven with xposed runs flawless for me.
I'm running EmotionOS and I have absolutely no issues besides the fingerprint scanner working intermittently. I haven't tried NSeven, but I have had no reason to move from Emotion. Much prefer stock android with Action Launcher to Touchwiz

I have an original battery and two ankers that I bought shortly after I got my note 4, I never thought to think it was just my batteries getting old.... The reboots are totally random... I'll look into getting a new battery soon. I guess.
The latest build for NSeven is being tested right now, from what I have seen so far, it is going to be a solid build. I honestly havent had any real issues with the previous build. I use my note 4 everyday, all day. I have been off my charger for 3 hours and my screen time is at an hour and a half, so literally half of the time. I am sitting at 60%, after running my music through my truck bluetooth for the last 2 hours. I am satisfied.

I love EmotionOS, and have had very few problems. I would love to try Nseven, but I was able to go straight from 5.1.1 to Emotion, I can't go directly from 5.1.1 to Nseven. Frankly, I dont want to go through the tedious root process again just to try out an MM Rom, so.. 7.0 it is for me I guess

Where did you start though? With 6.0 I would guess. I went straight from 5.1.1 to 7.0, but you cant go from 5.1.1 to 6 without re-rootting, from what I understand. I have tried it, and it doesnt work for me, just bootloops when I try to flash Nseven
I've tried both and am currently running Nseven because I want Xposed. Emotion is quick and smooth but becasue it is based on Nougat there is currently no Xposed option. I used Spen Commander and a notes app called Rings Notes which mimicked s notes quite well. There was another app that I brought over from Emotion when I switched back though the name escapes me at the moment.
Battery life on both (Emotion 1/20 & Nseven Build2) is great and Samsung Smart Connect will run on either ( I needed it because the integrated Samsung Connect on Nseven refused to work for me, constant FC) to control my Samsung smart tv(unfortunately no mirroring to the phone from the tv). Samsung Accessory Service may help if you have issues with your Gear watch, there is a workaround on the Emotion support thread as well.
Really you cannot go wrong with either, it comes down to preferences.

I'm surprised you were able to flash Emotion from 5.1.1. It appears to require a more up to date modem I thought.

I actually am using an anhker now, and it's just fine. On emotionOs, I usually end up around 40% at the end of the day with usage here and there. I also have an OEM replacement that i ordered straight from amazon-samsung, but i'm saving that one.
Maybe you should cleanly re-do your phone... reflash firmwares and all that. It shouldn't be so bad.. but then again, perhaps you are running some subset of apps that are eating up your CPU. We all have different usage habits.
Hey guys, so i took the plunge, and decided to switch to NSeven.
So far, it seems that NSeven will be my new home. Here's my thoughts
- EmotionOS is definitely "snappier" (due to vanilla?), but NSeven is snappier than stock touchwiz marshmallow.
- NSeven actually feels like an official update! When using EmotionOS, you can tell for sure that you are on a custom ROM because of the little glitches and quirks. It's still 95% usable, though, and I could see it being better for some people who prefer running completely debloated. However, NSeven feels 100% usable and you have things back like pen support and it seems to "mesh" better with this phone, maybe cause it's samsung to samsung. It sort of feels like i just picked up an note5 or note7 and got a new phone.
I'm running CPL1 build (build 2) right now... waiting for build 3 to be rereleased and more stable.
