Why do people prefer switching back to Stock ROM?

I'm not a PRO in Android but still, why do some people say "Stock is the way to go"? Because of stability? Less bugs?

it just works.

Because a group of coders have decided what you can or cannot do; took away your freedom. As such, we are human beings and like being confined within boundaries.
So some people like going back to stock.
If you have chosen android, root and go custom and just muck about and explore and learn; the possibilities are endless

me personally, it isn't worth trading speed and stability for a few extra buttons. but this is all opinions. maybe you should try a few things and form your own opinion of it and not worry about it.

Because no feature in a custom ROM is worth the time it will take constantly set it up, troubleshoot, endless flashing, and OCD like symptoms.
Stock JB is just too good to mess with it. I unlock and root my devices once I stop getting official updates. I have tried many ROMs, kernels on my GNEX and Nexus 7 and I always go back to stock.
Locked bootloader, no root, encrypted. It just feels good. Plus, if you purchase a new device, all you would have to do is login to your Google account and voila!

Stock ROMs are great, when JB first came out and before there were AOSP builds I rocked a rooted + BB stock image for a few weeks and thought it was great. I was able to fill in a lot of the missing ROM customization with apps (quiet hours, battery %, toggles, etc...). Smooth, fast, and reliable.
At the end of the day however a ROM built from AOSP source with some tweaks on top is the way to go for me.

Because stock is actually a really good stable feature-rich software package.

Stable, fast, no weird scripts nor heavily themed just pure android experience

for me, it just worked. Nothing had to be fiddled with and no headaches about small details. Being able to enjoy your device for what it is, is such a great feeling compared to constantly flashing updates and whatnot.

I run TSF shell launcher so no need for UI tweeks and stock is fine although I do mix it up with a Franco kernel.

I love stock ROMs. I wish more devs would simply tweak and compile straight aosp ROMs instead of cramming them full of features. Variety is a nice novelty but it wears off quickly reboot after reboot and fc after fc.
And on the same note I know its personal preference, but stock android looks so sleek and clean now that all themes seem just plain ugly. And it seems like most devs either include the theme engine or do some theming of the ROM itself. Just too much going on and affects performance/stability in my opinion.

LAst time i pointed out this fact, that i like stock more than custom rom (on GNEX), i was told to get iCab and to buy Iphone....
I like stock... Rooted, so i can remove search bar (only that). I can customize in perfect way, without obligation to flash constant updates, without getting fc-s, without taking care which kernel fits best etc...

[Q] Should I Install CM 10?

I am a long time Android and long time CM user. I have been using an LG G2x for way too long and finally got fed up with it. I have a brand new Galaxy S3 arriving tomorrow and am trying to figure out what to do when I get it.
For those of you have have used both the stock OS and CM 10, what are the advantages of each? By rooting and installing CM 10, what stock Samsung features will I lose? Are there any you think I might actually miss? So just in general, I was hoping someone who used both the stock OS and CM 10 for a decent amount of time could explain to me exactly what I will gain/lose by rooting and installing CM 10 on this phone. Thanks!

Not a good thread at all to start up man, just try them out and see for your self. Every one likes different things so it's kind of hard for us to just assume your needs... you know what I mean? Lots like both for different reasons, some always revert back to a stock rom some always go back to a cm rom.

Leave it stock but rooted for the first few days to see what you think. Many think the extra features and that its stable and fast are worth staying stock based. Still a lot of others opt for cm or aokp regardless. Just give em both their fsir chance!

That is why I didn't ask if I should flash CM 10 or not. I very simply asked what the differences were between stock and CM 10. I am wondering what features I will have with stock that I will lose with CM 10 and vice versa. That is a very fair question to ask of people who have already used both. I am trying to avoid trying both by going through a hassle and having to reinstall my programs and reconfigure my settings multiple times if I don't have to.

You lose all samsung stock features. That should be a no brainer. No motion activities, no smart stay (natively) no touchwiz, no wifi calling. Vanilla stock is what it always is, clean, no bloat, and super fast... what I said wasnt in any way being rude. It was exteremly truthful, and to the point.

Wifi calling doesn't work on CM 10? I have been using it on CM 7 for my G2x.
So do you miss any of those Samsung features? I guess are they gimmicky or actually nice to have? From reviews, I have read that stock is really fast, so not sure if I gain speed by going to CM. Have you noticed speed improvements with CM 10 over stock?

I know but its so deeply integrated into framework and settings now its a pain. And no I personally don't miss those gimmicky features, but allot of people do. I stick to tw roms, because of battery. It always seems to last longer on stock based roms for me. Otherwise I prefer cm based roms. Lets just say I'll be moving to cm as soon as I feel it is closer to 100% in my eyes. Or the nexus 4 lol. And the only way I can feel it being 100% is by me testing it, not asking others. That's what I meant with my 1st post.

I wasn't concerned with battery use, as I consider myself a battery expert. I was more interested in performance and features that were exclusive to TW and AOSP. They are so different that the only way to really get to know each other is to test drive them yourself.
Now I am on LiquidSmooth (AOSP base) and I love it. I am getting massive battery life, have tethering (I thethered my tablet to is almost all day yesterday after a bad flash [on the tablet not the phone]), Theme chooser springs a bit of life back into the eyecandy part. <--sometimes people flash not bc they want a new ROM but a new look .
Will I go back to TW? Sure. I tested Doc's ROM before he released it and I like it plenty enough to run it as a daily driver. But this is XDA and what are here for?

I personally never ever ran a touchwiz or sense ROMs on any device I've ever owned for more than a day. I just missed the full control cm ROMs give. Ever since my HD2 I've ran cm7 up to cm10 on my s3. I really never notice the features being lost from a tw ROM mostly because I don't use them. Never really thought their "advertised" features were all that.

I am running on a CM10 based rom and the only stock Samsung feature I miss is the Smart Stay. Everything else was just too gimmicky

Pretty sure there is an app for most of the samsung features.

I stuck to stock ICS TW for a couple of days and I didn't enjoy it.
It just seemed too much and I wanted a closer to stock experience.
Made the switch to CM10. Greatest thing ever.
It's simple, effective, and works in pretty much every way that I would like.
The only thing that I miss from TW is the Messaging app.

Do you use Skype, Vox, or any other VOIP app? If you do, then don't flash CM10, AOKP or any other AOSP based rom.

May I know why? I'm right now with the Galaxy SI and on CM10, hoping to get the S3 and on the same dilemma. Right now my Skype works well on the CM10, Viber works only on speaker phone.

Having tried cm 10/aokp as well as TW ROMs for extended periods of time, I can say the following:
Although at first missing a certain TW feature might seem like a drawback- the feeling comes from what you're used to, and after a few days or week you will likely forget those features which you previously had which you thought were so important. For me the TW calendar (s Planner) was the big thing I was missing- since for a while I really couldn't find a good substitute which looked as good and performed as well! Finally I found one, so now I don't even compare anymore, but even if I hadn't found a substitute I'm sure I would have moved on at some point.
Point is, base your choice on the majority of the benefits that you'll get from the respective ROM. Personally, I like aokp/cm10 precisely because of its overall simplistic aesthetic ( I'm in love with the native jelly bean fonts used in the notification bar) and its native ability to theme. In terms of performance and extra tweaks, there are plenty of custom TW ROMs which are on par with the aosp ones (IMO). So I think it comes down to the overall feel/look, and pure personal preference.

you will lose wifi calling, you will lose the ability to upload music straight from the music player to drop box, you will lose your mind, however, once you run a JB ROM and use google now for the first time, and you will go ape over the amount of customization available to cm10 users.
honestly, used "stock" for about 3 weeks when i first got my device back in july, flashed cm10, and never looked back. words cannot describe how amazing and feature-packed a cm10 ROM is...
flash hellfire 1.3 (if you don't mind the red), and give slim bean a shot if you don't want the red. I have had nothing but positive results with those two.

WiFi calling
For me WiFi calling is the biggest feature, and extremely important. I don't have T-Mobile signal in my lab, where I spend most of the time and WiFi calling is the only hope. This is why I'm staying with the stock for now.
But if anyone can show me a way to get WiFi calling on CM10, I will be really thankful. Hate the stock rom from the bottom of my heart!!

[Q] New to the Nexus Scene: Battery and ROM

Hi there,
I recently purchased a used Galaxy Nexus from eBay after having seen the good spec and for the low price. I have a few questions before I receive the phone and I'd like to know what ROM would be the best to use, I have seen a stable Cyanogenmod is this the best? Also, I have seen some questions around issues on battery life, has anyone using this ROM had any problems and if so what advice could you give?
I have previously owned the Orange SF 1 and 2 and was not satisfied with battery life after having changed the ROM etc. and I don't want to have those issues with this phone. So, I appreciate any help I can get with my questions, thanks!!

Every single rom I've used has pretty much been the same with battery. The battery on the galaxy nexus isn't the best. That's how it was built. No rom is going to magically make it better. Any difference in battery you get will be minimal and depend more on how you use your phone. I suggest try out some ROM and kernel combinations and see what works for you. There are plenty to chose from and honestly, they are all good. You aren't going to get one single answer from everyone here.

Thanks for your reply. All right, does the battery for you last on a day to day basis? I don't want to mess about with ROMs too much, I am looking for that one ROM that would be most stable and I won't have to change. What is the stock Android like on the Nexus, also I have seen "PARANOIDANDROID" to be very popular so is that good, what do you use? Thanks again!

I am not one to answer these questions. I work at a desk all day with a charger in my phone pretty much the whole day so battery has never been an issue. But if you arent doing a lot to your phone all day like streaming music and movies and gaming then you should be fine. As for your other question, I have been on a different ROM every week since 4.3 came out. lol. All of them are nice and smooth and good ROMs. If you like a lot of features, go with Paranoid Android. If you like minimal stock go with Cyanogenmod or any other AOSP ROM. Stock isnt all that bad either though. Its like I said, try some out and find what you like. As long as you know what you are doing, you shouldnt have any problems flashing a bunch of stuff. Thats the fun part anyway.

I am liking Paranoid Android so far but I can see its got quite a few versions, is the latest one 3.97 stable? Sorry for all the questions, I really appreciate you taking time to answer them.

Lol I know that, I was asking if the latest version 3.97 was stable or not. Got my Galaxy Nexus today and its on stock 4.2.2, so going to try a few ROM's later on to get it to 4.3 just wanted to know about the stability of Paranoid Android.

I cant think of any unstable ROMs that we have. The good thing about the Galaxy Nexus is that the developers dont have to do any workarounds to get things working. Its a completely unlocked phone with all the tools for developing available for them. So all the ROMs that are made pretty much have everything working in it.
EDIT: Oh, and just make sure you use the ROM that is made for your device. If you have the unlocked GSM version, you need ROMs made for "Maguro".

Thanks a lot for all your help! Since, I have installed Cyanogenmod and stuck to Android 4.2, as ParanoidAndroid wasn't for me. I have also used the Touchwiz UI and it looks great. The battery life I am happy with it even though it does go down a little more than average, but it's fine for me. Thanks again, great phone!

Forget about official update for our OGP..

It was a bit frustated when waiting for major update from LG for our lovely G Pro. Although using stock rom is enough, but we need more to optimise the device.
I have been using some kitkat custom roms and decided to use one of the for day to day use. My impression so far is that I wil not go back to stock unless big problem happen to my phone (i.e. when I need to go to service center ?).
So, currently I just waiting for nightly updates or other kitkat new custom rom coming ☺

I got an update notification on my stock rooted phone this morning... Still nervous about installing it.
I like AOSP roms, but I find they favor having the latest android base over working out all of the bugs. Which in turn means extra features, but lack stability. I usually find the best Roms for a phone (AOSP or stock mod) match the android base of the stock.

There are not too much options for Korean Variant F240x so unless there comes some stable custom rom had to stick with the stock.

I'm using CM 11 as it has DSP working and most custom ROMs do not.
I still wish LG would release an update for us.

The only problem I have with the ASOP and CM based roms is stability. Some have good battery life, some are feature packed, some have working navigation, some have a hard time locking or issues with sound.
I have yet to find one that just works in all aspects. That's what keeps me going back to stock. Even the G2 V5 had issues for me with signal reception (yes I flashed my modem again) and wifi transfer speeds. The only one that has it all working perfectly is the stock 4.1.2.
I wish we had more customization on that base E980 stock rom kernel tweaks and things like that, but I understand the allure of 4.4 roms versus spending dev time on an outdated build. For me though, having a phone that works consistently is more important. That's not to say there is anything wrong with the ASOP and CM roms, I just haven't found one that just works. Especially when it comes to GPS.
I see that there is the 4.2.2 update from China and I hope a Dev or 2 takes a look at that, or the new Gx that is very similar to the G Pro in hardware. Hopefully there is an option to port that to our G Pro. We'll see. For now, I still enjoy my G Pro and really have no desire to purchase anything else on the market right now.

I got a CWM bootloop......

Oh yeah, another thing I got last time was even I have unrooted (and rooted) stock rom, I could not get OTA update, while my friend got that.
So, still keep using the custom rom which has less bug.

Yep. If you are rooted and have CWM or TWRP recovery installed and you attempt to update you will get stuck in a recovery boot loop. If you are stock, non-rooted, and you install the AT&T update you will NOT be able to root - the update blocks rooting. IMHO there is nothing of value in the AT&T update. Wherever you are, stay there.

is it an auto update? I'm on slimbean 4.3. is there a thread about this to disable anything to avoid the update coming through?

I have been running the cm nightlys now for several days it has proven quite stable does a great job multitasking and running game apps. for battery life i downloaded no-frills cpu control and set the cpu to interactive. also has an option to apply on boot so when rebooting the phone it does not return to on demand. Getting 8 to 12 hrs battery life (6 with heavy gaming) and battery recharges in 2 to 4 hrs depending on which charger i use stock or aftermarket. I am very happy with cm11 at this point and been getting daily updates adding features and fixing issues. I also have run the halo harmony rom which works very well but battery life is short 4 to 6 hours heavy gaming have drained battery in 3hrs but halo interface is nice. As far as stock lg filled this thing with way to much bloat ware and even with it all disabled phone is still slower then what it is capable of being. I love they way this device runs on kit kat and will continue to run the cm nightys until they release a stable.

You should also know no matter which Kit Kat rom you are running you will need to do this from your dialer go to setting and select vibrate on call waiting. None of the roms have a working call waiting ringer yet but the vibrate function does work but must be selected manually after installing rom.

I have been plagued with the muffled in-call mic problem on any AOSP/CM based ROM. That has been the driving factor for staying on stock-based.

I just also realised that what you mentioned is true. What happened to me is not all calling, but some were not a problem. I think an AOSP based rom has better in-call mic than CM, CMIIW.

About a week ago cm fixed mic and headset issues they also have dsp manager fully working

Thanks for this update.
I was searching high and low to see if the phone mic issue had been resolved. Many others have experienced it but nobody ever followed up.
This was the one issue that was holding this phone back (no matter what ROM). I'm told that the mic volume is useable - with a little bit of cutting in and out. Not 100% perfect yet, but useable.

Well, I already knew the device likely wasn't going to be getting an upgrade. I bought it as a temporary device. I bought a Note III last week, and am in the process of selling my G Pro.
I do miss some features from it, mostly the 5x5 home screen grid and the actually usable universal remote app built-in, but the S-Pen features outweigh them.

If you are stock, non-rooted, and you install the AT&T update you will NOT be able to root - the update blocks rooting. IMHO there is nothing of value in the AT&T update. Wherever you are, stay there.

I had to use LG FlashTools after a freegee fiasco switching from TWRP to CWM, and ended up on stock 10k. Completely stock, no custom recovery, just 4.1.2 and rooted. If you attempt to install the update already rooted WITHOUT a custom recovery it just gives some message about root detected and reboots back normally.

I prefer LG rigth now before Samsung again LG NEED PUT THE DAMN ASS on earth and bring updates on time then you will see Samsung crying.
S4 sucks
S3 blow S4 on any day (yes i know 2 cores vs 4 cores but S3 STILL the phone most used in the world)
Note 3=Note 2 updated what a F*** joke samsung
Samsung not will rule the smartphone world with 10GB of pure TW crap in each phone they sell...

Considering buying a Gpad, couple of questions.

I am thinking about a new tablet since mine got water damage. I want the new Nexus tab, but if I can get this for the right price I will have it as a backup with the Nexus comes out.
Hows Battery Life?
Is it possible to install the GPE software and how easy is it?
Anything I should know about the pad since I havent looked into it at all, just love the size and want on screen buttons so Sammy devices are out.

Regarding the battery life, for the price, its not really bad. I would recommend rooting it right away though to increase the battery life. Using stock, I was able to get about 6-7 hours playing The MMO, Avabel, which is pretty intensive graphics wise. I would recommend installing slimkat ROM + greenify to further increase battery life. Havent been able to test how much improvement I got as I let my wife borrow it for a while.
Regarding your second question, I believe you want to convert the regular V500 to the GPE V510 version. There have already been numerous threads on the forums discussing this. So far, it looks like some radios are not working, most notably, WIFI. and is buggy. You can do a search on the forums to view the current status. What I am using is Slimkat, which is pretty close to AOSP and very good when it comes to battery life.
Regarding the last question, I've had mine for only 2 weeks and thus far, Im enjoying it. the bazels are small, the tablet itself feels well made, and performance wise, its pretty good for its current price point. On the negative side, the speakers doesn't sound very nice and are at the back. Would have been better if it was on the front. The screen is not too bright when using outdoors, and the camera is pretty crappy (although we don't really use the tablet as a camera as often as a smartphone so shouldn't be a biggy). However I got mine for about $225 (US) brand new and for the price point, I can hardly find anything save for the nexus 7 that can beat it, performance wise. Ran an antutu benchmark right after installing slimkat on it and actually scores higher than the note 2. Not bad for a $225 tablet, in full HD.

Apparently there's a brightness bug (haven't noticed yet)...
Getting it rooted and ready for custom roms is/was a bit of a mission (if you OTA update to 4.4.2, mine came with 4.2.2 on board).
A few custom roms available - much of a muchness at present.
Needs some custom rom variety, for sure.
If you can get it cheap (like me) I'd jump at the chance!

Yeah it definitely could use more custom ROMS. Unfortunately though it doesn't look like there are too many devs interested yet. Hopefully the demand gets higher. My slimkat doesn't even have a stable release yet. On their official page, it says no tester or something like that. There are some CM nightlies, pac man, and CMB roms available though. Tried CMB but has some app compatibility issues so went with AOSP-based ROM for maximum compatibility.

If you want the GPE software, why don't you buy the Google Play Edition. Used ones available on Swappa and eBay.

There's a gpad on Craigslist for $200 nearby and didn't see any gpe on swappa. I know it's fairly easy to make the M8 run gpe software, so I was curious if it's as easy for the gpad

You can run GPE ROM on V500, but it's not really useable. WiFi doesn't work. Hardware is just enough different that drivers won't work. Devs spent a lot of time on this early this year and hit a brick wall. I sold my V500 and purchased a GPE, and I don't regret the change. Keep watching swappa and eBay. One will show up before long.

Ive tried CMB. CM based ROMS are awesome, but the app incompatibility is a deal breaker for me because a few of my apps are in that list. So I stayed with slimkat AOSP based ROM. Never looked back ever since. If only franco kernel is compatible with our tablet, im all set.
Well maybe if the GPE ROM gets ported if and whenever that will happen
EDIT: Im also looking for a fix for the brightness bug on my slimkat. The LEDs appear off but I just double tap my power button to fix anyway. Not really a major peeve for me. Though a fix is very much welcome
