The s5 was never in the cards with me.
I see no reason that we won't have an exploit available pretty quickly. If nothing else, you can do the official HTC unlock now and wait for S-OFF later so you can cover your tracks.

Me neither. Until KNOX is either optional or gone altogether, Samsung will never get my business again. I refuse to support a company so openly anti-developer.

Same about sammy. I vowed id only stick to the nexus line but this m8 looks awesome if it can be rooted.
Hopefully your right and it will be htc dev unlockable from day 1. I doubt it being at&t.

With at&t its hard to tell but the One was HTC Dev unlockable on at&t at launch I thought?
This is why I'm glad I have T-Mobile. Besides the Sony phones (which T-Mobile likely doesn't even ask Sony to lock the bootloader but Sony chooses to do it themselves), T-Mobile is very cool about rooting and custom ROMs. Hell EVERY person at the T-Mobile store we go to has their **** rooted and they have no problem saying it! If an at&t employee did that, guaranteed there would be a job opening.

Original HTC One bootloader unlock was available on day 1 then vanished. I think there are other exploits. I have unlocked the bootloader of almost every Android device I've ever owned (except my Nexus 7 FHD). I *dont* intend on doing that with my M8 unless and until the promised support and updates doesn't materialize. In the best of all possible worlds, someone will come up with a temporary root method so I can at least run Titanium backup.

S-On means you can only install "Secure" software. S-OFF, means you can install whatever you want.
If you want roms, you'll want S-OFF.

Not completely correct, if you want ROMs you just need an unlocked bootloader and a recovery which you can get without S-OFF too...
S-OFF (Security-OFF) = much more control of the entire phone (you can do pretty much everything if you're able to do it)
if you have enough time to spend then read this perfect in depth explanation

Alright bud
Did you swap out your N3 for this? - I pick mine up in the morning. Hoping it'll be a a quality device, miss my original One
Hello guys, I need a asap help and will be very thankful for guidance.
I recently bought a used HTC one M8 Gold 32GB, it is in pristine condition, just weeks used, but when I came home and did a reset I realized that it was a rooted phone. But then I discovered that there were some apps like Sprint Worldwide and there were many instances where I found Sprint written, (I have no SIM installed and neither do we have Sprint in our country). So I ended up assuming that it was rooted by the original user solely to unlock the device? I am currently in 4.4.2 and unable to update as it keeps stucking on checking screen. Now I want to revert the device to its original condition and need help doing that. I heard that it can be done by installing RUU so I went to:
htc . com / us / support/rom-downloads
and downloaded: 4.25.651.18 (assuming it is a Sprint)
and then placed it in the sdcard but after HBOOT takes some loading time, it just says invalid image. I have also tried renaming it with no hope.
the bootloader is Locked/ M8_WHL PVT SHIP S-OFF.

First you need to post the results of fastboot getvar all. REMOVE your serial and IMEI numbers from the pasted info before posting. We need to see hopefully the firmware that is currently on the device.
If it is Sprint and you have downloaded the correct RUU file, you do NOT put it on the SD card, you leave it on your Windows PC, attach the device to the PC with USB cable and run the RUU as administrator in Windows. Before that, download HTC Sync Manager and let it install, then delete it. It will leave behind the HTC drivers which you need.

It's definitely Sprint but the firmware is ancient. Run the RUU file and hopefully it will go thru. If not, we'll have to find a way to update your firmware one at a time, but as you are S-OFF it will be easy enough as long as we can find the firmwares.
Sprint RUU can be found Here, this is the latest Lollipop version.
Get your phone into fastboot mode and simply run the RUU .exe file while your phone is plugged into the computer via USB.

Sprint is CDMA. No doubt about it. The CDMA version M8 supports CDMA, GSM and HSPA, but not as many HSPA bands as the "pure" GSM M8 (basically any version except Sprint and Verizon).
What bands does your carrier use for 3G (HSPA)? I'm guessing that your carrier uses bands not supported by the Sprint version. In which case, you are out of luck. The Sprint (or Verizon) version is not recommended for anyone outside the US, and not on the specific (Sprint or Verizon) carrier.
You can't flash RUU, radio, or firmware from other versions to Sprint (even with s-off). As mentioned, the flash will either fail or brick the phone.

No, s-off can be beneficial to anyone whose carriers are bad about releasing firmware updates. But it's not necessary for anyone to have s-off. You just could be a little more limited in your rom options and you can't flash a radio from another region or customize your splash screen (the black screen with white HTC lettering.

If your in the US you should flashed the US unlocked RUU if you want faster updates than a carrier version of the phone.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't really matter. My understanding was the hardware is all the same (among GSM units), the only difference is in software for regions, and that's easily changed by unlocking the bootloader and changing MID via ADB.

No worries, bootloader unlocking only allows you to flash TWRP/root/roms/etc as far as I know. For anything more than that, like mid/cid changes firmware flashing, you need S-off.
finally got my hands on my htc 10 european version
phone didn´t came with open bootloader and twrp, but it´s s-off
what is this serial number on the back of the phone?
employer htc phone? test phone?
anyone?
guys is my version of htc 10 the developer edition?
i bought it in ebay
what are the advantages? one thing i noticed is that it comes with s off
So I bought this 'new' phone with the intention of rooting it and got to the point of updating to the latest firmware before root. turns out the phone is already 'modified'. contacted htc support looking for a means to restore factory specs but they say it has been rooted and it'll take another 2-3 days before i can further pursue the issue.
wondering if someone here can enlighten me as to how i'd restore stock before i re-root (there's no telling what mischief the rooter was up to). it was pretty easy on my old samsung with odin but this is my first htc so i'm in unknown territory here. the phone is in an otherwise impeccable state so i'm not really bothered about returning it since i can't imagine anything that might survive a factory reflash.
a little guidance would be much appreciated!
Take a look at the ReadMe thread. The RUU section most likely contains everything you need. I personally recommend the SD card method. It's the easiest and most fail-safe one.

Been poring through it but frankly it is overwhelming. Wonder if you could answer a few noob questions.
1. the ruu section says not to re-lock the bootloader. will flashing an ruu re-lock the bootloader?
2. found my ruu which seems to be a sprint cdma version (sku:651). however the cid (SPCS_001) does not match with mine (11111111). not sure where to find the MID. where does this mismatch leave me?
3. will flashing the sprint cdma fw lock my carrier (ie prevent me from using other sim cards)
4. does the ruu rewrite/restore all of the partitions e.g. including recovery? (considering an unknown person has rooted and tinkered with the phone).

found my ruu which seems to be a sprint cdma version (sku:651). however the cid (SPCS_001) does not match with mine (11111111). not sure where to find the MID. where does this mismatch leave me?

Your phone currently uses the SuperCID. That CID had a whole bunch of benefits on older HTC devices. It lost most of them on the M9, though. Changing the CID is only possible with S-OFF. I highly recommend you to use the conversion guide for restoring your phones original CID. (CDMA versions of the M9 can't get converted to different variants without breaking them. If you're able to get mobile reception with that phone then it didn't get converted and you definetely own a Sprint M9. You don't have to look for the MID in this case.)

will flashing the sprint cdma fw lock my carrier (ie prevent me from using other sim cards)

I can't answer that question since sim locks don't exist in the European firmware versions of this phone and I therefore don't have much experiences with them.

does the ruu rewrite/restore all of the partitions e.g. including recovery? (considering an unknown person has rooted and tinkered with the phone).

Yes, it does. RUUs overwrite everything on your phone with their files.
thank you for taking the time!

definitely a sprint m9 then. i wonder if they're rooting/unlocking sim-locked sprints and reselling them as unlocked phones.
will have to confirm the sim lock detail with htc support either way. but it's starting to look like i may have to return the phone. disappointing but at least rooting and flashing a genuine one is gonna be a breeze now
