root & s-off question (M8) - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im contemplating buying the at&t m8 tuesday on launch day but im worried since i know it will come locked down tight. rumor has it on android central that s-off will be waiting for us? is this true or no?

The s5 was never in the cards with me.

I see no reason that we won't have an exploit available pretty quickly. If nothing else, you can do the official HTC unlock now and wait for S-OFF later so you can cover your tracks.

Me neither. Until KNOX is either optional or gone altogether, Samsung will never get my business again. I refuse to support a company so openly anti-developer.

Same about sammy. I vowed id only stick to the nexus line but this m8 looks awesome if it can be rooted.
Hopefully your right and it will be htc dev unlockable from day 1. I doubt it being at&t.

With at&t its hard to tell but the One was HTC Dev unlockable on at&t at launch I thought?
This is why I'm glad I have T-Mobile. Besides the Sony phones (which T-Mobile likely doesn't even ask Sony to lock the bootloader but Sony chooses to do it themselves), T-Mobile is very cool about rooting and custom ROMs. Hell EVERY person at the T-Mobile store we go to has their **** rooted and they have no problem saying it! If an at&t employee did that, guaranteed there would be a job opening.

Original HTC One bootloader unlock was available on day 1 then vanished. I think there are other exploits. I have unlocked the bootloader of almost every Android device I've ever owned (except my Nexus 7 FHD). I *dont* intend on doing that with my M8 unless and until the promised support and updates doesn't materialize. In the best of all possible worlds, someone will come up with a temporary root method so I can at least run Titanium backup.

Every Qualcomm HTC devices has been S-OFFed, it will certainly be the same for the M8 trust me...

S-On means you can only install "Secure" software. S-OFF, means you can install whatever you want.
If you want roms, you'll want S-OFF.

Not completely correct, if you want ROMs you just need an unlocked bootloader and a recovery which you can get without S-OFF too...
S-OFF (Security-OFF) = much more control of the entire phone (you can do pretty much everything if you're able to do it)
if you have enough time to spend then read this perfect in depth explanation

Yeah I agree and it's the least I could since I'm always flashing a Rom or mod that someone makes and doesn't charge, so I always like to give back to this community of developers. This community has always been there for me thru every phone I've had, and the people that use it always help each other out. Can't wait till payday cause it's the first thing I'm doing with my paycheck lol
On http://theroot.ninja/ i downloaded the APK, im going to have to install a stock rom due to it says it wont work on insert coins rom, but a quick question before i do any of that when does it ask me to donate the $25 ? after it runs its test to make sure it works and also what kind of payments do they accept? if anyone knows thanks in advance everyone!

Hello. I have an HTC ONE M8 CID : ORANG001. Bootloader LOCKED and S-ON. Running : Android 4.4.3
It is carrier unlocked, I can use whatever sim I like with this phone. Now, I want to get rid off ORANG001 and change it with a HTC__001 or some other CID so I can receive updates directly from HTC.
Does anyone know some safe steps to accomplish this ? Or I can change somehow the recovery with another one ? I think ORANG001 means that is orange stock recovery. It's not carrier locked, but still, I want to replace the ORANG001.

Yeah but to S-OFF one must be rooted first, right?
UPDATE : I just unlocked the bootloader. I want to root the device but what TWRP should I flash ?
UPDATE : Rooted the device and installed SuperSU via TWRP. Next, getting S-OFF.
UPDATE : I get this message while flashing firewater : firewater can not work on your device.
Until I manage to S-OFF can I flash through TWRP a custom ROM like CM for example ? Or S-OFF is a must for doing this ?

For firewater yes, I'm not familiar with the other methods.
If it's saying it doesn't work for your device, you're out of luck, unless you try the other methods. Which you do at your own risk obviously.

S-off is required to write to all partitions, change cid and so on (google and xda are your friends)... You can still achieve this by flashing a stock-like rom like arhd or maximus te and paying 25 bucks to Sunshine developers...

Are you sure you need s-off?
From your posts, I can plainly tell you are a noob. (no offence, that just what we call the new to rooting people here.)
S-on is there to protect your device from becoming bricked when you flash something you shouldn't be.
With S-off, if you screw up, your $700 phone might be turned into a paperweight with absolutely zero chance that the warranty is still valid.
If you want my advice, don't go S-off till you know what you are doing.

Or do you just want it because you think it's cool?

Also, I just tried to send a friend request that didn't deliver because there was no friend button for it?

Anyways, the gist of it was this:
I was very mistaken about you. You are obviously not a noob from what I've seen on subsequent posts, you are just an M8 noob. I was in your position once, and I get it 100%
The thing is, on the Q&A, I get sick of the same questions over and over and over.
And also, people getting into soft brick trouble because of s-off.
I have no worries about you though buddy.
You will be just fine. It's not really that hard. Just different than the rest.
It's worth it though. The M8 is SOOO nice!

I found this site, http://rumrunner.us/ Does anyone know if this is legit or just a virus waiting to happen? It looks pretty legit to me. Thanks for your input, it would be great if we could get s-off for our device!

T-Mobile can unlock using HTC dev and then run sunshine. Vzw is still waiting for sunshine to update it. Other option for the vzw m9 is send it to someone with a javacard.
I second the above. Mailed mine to somebody with a java card. Fortunately I had the Nexus 6 to hold me over while that was being done. If needed, I am sure you can find somebody in the java card thread.
I am sure this was clarified somewhere, but I read this thread and the one linked;
I have a Verizon M9 with S-Off from a Java card, locked bootloader and no root.
Assuming I root and then do this method, will my data be wiped?

Gotta have a java card to s-off, and I assume you gotta be s-off before you can unlock the bootloader and root. Check out the Java Card thread to find somebody with a java card and send your phone to them, or if they're close enough, meet up with them. Stand up guys, all of them are. Many many multiple success stories from people sending their devices and having it back within the week all ready to flash.. for just the cost of shipping and a donation..
You must be S-OFF to unlock your bootloader.

Brand New M8 Shipped with S-OFF

I got my HTC One M8 about a month or more ago switching from my Xperia Z2, and of course, the first thing I had to do with it was root it. Since I had to unlock the bootloader first, I went into bootloader mode and saw the info on the top of the screen. As expected, it says LOCKED, but the funny thing is, it says S-OFF instead of S-ON. Is there any way that this can happen to brand new phones? How can I make sure I am S-OFF, other than going into bootloader mode? I want to convert my phone to GPE but don't want to brick it in the process. Thanks :good:

You got lucky, I traded in my m8 for the nexus 6 and left it s-off for the next person that gets it ^^
If it says S-OFF in bootloader you are indeed S-OFF. There's an adb shell/terminal command to unlock the bootloader if you don't want to go through htcdev, although htcdev is safer. But either way, once you bootloader unlock you can convert to gpe if you want or whatever you wanna do.

I wonder if the phone was returned the point of sale, repackaged, and shipped to you? Perhaps the previous owner relocked the bootloader but left the phone S-OFF.

Yeah, I already unlocked bootloader, rooted a long time ago, but I'm not sure if this phone is brand new because it did come with the wrapping around it and not a scuf or scratch was found on the phone, however the sticker sealing the box was already cut, but I presume it's just my uncle checking that all the parts are there because he was the one who got the phone for me since he works at a pretty big shop where they sell phones . Either way, thanks, also great ROMs you're doing for the M8 :good:
