Should I buy a Nexus 5x, now? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
First of all, I know there are/may be similar threads, but nothing recent afaik, sorry if I have missed something.
So to the question, is it worth it to get a Nexus 5X now? I was a happy Nexus 5 user for a lot of time, but the battery life got awful recently and getting a new battery for a second time doesnt sound ok. Will I be as happy with the 5x? Are there problems that the majority of units have? Any words on this vs the pixel (yeah, its a year older, two or three times cheaper, but if someone used them both in 'real life')?
Any feedback is appreaciated, thank you in advance!

In my opinion if you want a low price solution for a HUGE reward in return go for it. I bought the 32gb one on December 2016 so I'm a recent buyer. The phone is perfect for gaming and basic usage like texting music listening etc. As for the comparison between the n5x and the pixel, come on you already know the pixel is the better one due to its age and Google recent exclusive features support (I hope we get assistant on 5x ?). Anyway, my experience thus far on the 5x is this. Awesome camera, performance is absolutely amazing(if you're coming from a nexus 5 you're gonna be blown away) and only con is that ram tends to kill apps every 3 or 4 apps that open. My suggestion is you should buy it and don't go for the 16gb one!!!!! Cheers.

It depends:
Pros
Camera, Updates, Community, acceptable size, dual band Wi-Fi, 4g band coverage, GPS accuracy
Cons
Thermal throttling with heavy usage, weak mono front speaker, uncalibrated compass, small battery
The defects were not so important for me (I'm a normal user), so I bought it on July 2016. So far so good.

Dont forget the possibility of your phone bootlooping after 1 year warranty!
I mainly dont like this phone cause of that, temp throttling and lower ram...
And you probably won't be pleased with battery life many are complaining about it. To me its fine cause i had a phone with 2 and a half hours soc max, and now its mostly arround 4 hours soc...
I dont know if u can wait but there should be a budget pixel 2 phone, probably much better than this but also probably pricier...

Bootloop by aging solds is a serious item, if you usually do tasks, which let the processor heat.

I bought it in July 2016, absolutely satisfied. Nice performance (2 gigs of RAM isn't a big problem after all), perfect community and well built. For 200€ definitely worth.
However, I guess in 2017 I would go for Nexus 6P, OnePlus, Samsung Galaxy S6 or Note 4. But N5X is surely a safe bet, worth every penny.

Guys I am also interested in buying 5x , was just curious and the model , I mean do all the nexus 5x models are same? I mean right now I have s4 I9500 and there are way too many models which are a problem for me as development depends upon models , so how to check if there are different models of nexus 5x and which model is best? And as many of you guys mentioned regarding heating and soldering issue ,,, can anyone please explain it? I mean does it overheat during using social apps?

There are two different models LG-H970 (US model) and LG-H791 (global model). The factory images are universal. Every 5X rom and kernel on XDA can be used on either model.
This phone will throttle at low battery from high heat. The phone will throttle at any and every opportunity of high heat exposure. If you reboot, the phone may throttle. If you flash custom software it will throttle. Usually thermal throttling doesn't last long unless you are in a warm environment. Whether you live or work in a warm climate, use mobile data hours on end, leave the phone in the sun, etc. Any app could cause the phone to throttle as well. Owning this phone means you will notice throttling at some point.

Just look how many threads there are and how many people are reporting bootloops and it isnt just nexus 5x lg has the problem with its phones bootlooping... Is there anybody that has this phone from the time they released it and is still actively using it (didnt have bootloop issue)?
All ppl here, in comments bought it in 2016, including me...

I am using it for about 9 months (second owner).
I am using custom ROM - pure Nexus , and it is 7.1.1 now.
It is an American version I think, I bought it there, I am not playing games on the phone, so it is rarely getting hot.

Guys can someone please tell me the best way to check the serial number?

I have been using a 5x since it was first released, ordered the first day Google offered it. Been running custom roms ever since. Or since they first became available for the 5x.

I also have it since launch (H790 October 2015) and it has been running exclusively on custom roms + custom kernel. Recently I've modified the cooling system (replaced the yellow patch with aluminium foil + thermal paste).

If I was buying right now I think the OnePlus 3T would be the most likely choice. It's a decent price too. Pixel are too expensive.
I have an inkling Google will announce a midrange phone soon. Perhaps at I/O this year.

Thinking of buying a ZenFone 2 to replace my old Nexus 5

Hi everyone,
I currently have the 2013 Nexus 5, and am looking to replace it as the battery is dying.
I have a budget of £250 max, but would like to spend less.
the 32GB, 4GB - ram ZE551ML is now down to £178.95 at Simply Electronics
http://www.simplyelectronics.net/mainproduct.php?pid=27003&sd=specs
but I have a few questions:
1. Which version of Android is it currently on (officially, eg. without flashing) and do you think it will see 6.0 if it hasnt already got it?
2. Is most/all of the bloatware it comes with uninstallable?
3. Would you still buy it/ are you still happy with your ZenFone 2?
4. Whats the build quality like? and common problems?
thanks a lot

1. Lollipop 5.0, and yes its confirmed we are getting official Marshmallow 6.0.
2. Almost all except the ASUS apps and Clean Master.
3. Yup, typing from it and have to say 6 months in and still a happy camper
4. Build quality is pretty solid but my unit's back cover creaks a bit at times. Some common problems I've noticed are:
(i) Gorilla Glass 3 is prone to scratches on some units.
(ii) The screen goes unresponsive.
(iii) The loudspeaker just dies apparently.
(iv) The rear Camera lens is prone to scratches.
Thats pretty much it. Hope this helped!
Another happy 6 months Zenfone 2 owner. I have had no problems with it at all.
I was looking at the 32gb version when I was considering buying my Zenfone, but with the price difference between it and the higher spec 64gb version being under £30 at the time, I bought the 64gb version.
6 minths for me too and still happy with my purchase. 4gb/64gb version.

Don't do it. I considered upgrading from the zenfone 2 to a nexus 5
MMS has issues and ASUS support is horrible.
8 months in and I'm extremely satisfied. You won't regret it.
I came from a nexus 5 and couldn't be happier. On the nexus 5 I used my own custom build of cm12 and talked nicely. I believe the zenfone runs circles around the nexus 5.

Camera is struggling at dark and night and low light conditions, Bluetooth pairing gives me hard time with my Ford Figo. otherwise extremely happy with phone, super smooth , fast charging, loud speaker etc... good phone for a little money you will pay.
I come from the Nexus 4, the build quality is good but not as great but then again the N4 was all glass while the N5 is mostly plastic like the ZF2.
Power-wise this phone is a beast, I have never ever had to close anything due to low RAM.
The only real problem with this phone is software, its stuck in 5.0 not even 5.1 and ROM support is nowhere near Nexus levels so don't expect to be able to choose from a number of projects. Again if you don't care about custom ROMs no problem, but if you're really into that like a lot of us Nexus users are then you're not gonna like this phone.
My hope is that a stable CM13 will change this and we will have other ROMs based off it as well, but then again I had this phone almost since launch and the waiting sucks.

I suppose compared to nexuses there aren't as many ROMs, but there are still plenty of them available, including an AOSP ROM, which I can personally vouch for.

Yes there are a lot of ROMs available, I see a few people complaint about the battery life, however mine been great, just install cm13, running great so far
i came from the red/orange google play store nexus 5, the zenfone has better battery life and is much snappier. signal i think might be a tiny bit lower than the nex5 but then again cant confirm that since i dont drop calls or anything like that.
camera is better than the nex5 but then again the nex 5 camera is horrible so thats not saying much, the earpiece call quality and volume is great, but the speakerphone isnt as loud as i would like.
if i could do it over i would still do it. i have been nothing but satisfied with the phone. and if i could change anything about the phone it would only be that it didnt have hardware buttons on the bottom and that they were software buttons instead.
also i should mention im using the cheaper varient of the zenfone "1.8ghz 2gb ram" and its better than the nex5 in every aspect.
I also moved from the N5 to Z2 and I much prefer the Z2 now. When I first got it, I was ratty with the amount of bloat. The latest cm13 nightly is pure bliss to use and I have no worries running it daily, considering I work 'on standby' and need to be able to receive phone calls at pretty much anytime first time.
I'm in the same situation but contemplating the LG G3, especially because the camera in the ZF2 doesn't seem to be as good and doesnt have OIS.
Also the size (G3 is slightly smaller and lighter), better screen, infrared (it could be very useful for me, I travel a lot and wouldn't have to deal with crappy dirty remotes anywhere).
Let's wait and see, my nexus 5 will be back from the hospital tomorrow (dead or alive, I still don't know).
ps.: Oh, and removable battery!

Worth upgrading from Moto X 2014?

Hi,
I know this question may seem similar and it has already been answered before but those threads are over 5-6 months old so imo they aren't relevant anymore. I have to make a decision ASAP regarding selling my 8 months-old 16GB Moto X 2014 and upgrading to a brand new 32GB Nexus 5X. In the place where I live, the X2 can easily be sold with ~$175 (I bought it new for $250). Now, the 32 gig 5X can be bought at ~ $350. So, do you guys think it's worth the extra $$$? Did the 5X improve since the monthly 2016 updates? Does anyone here tested the N Dev Preview 4 on their 5X? Do the past issues (like overheating) are still there? To me, the "shocking" thing about the 5X is the fact that I tested it in a local store besides my X2 in Geekbench 3 and it was quite of a surprise to see the Moto take the lead in the 2nd attempt. (Both stock, running MM 6.0 - The 5X had the October 1st 2015 security update). After the 2nd run, the 5X's score dipped below the X2's by around 300-500 points.

Why aren't the 5 month reviews relevant? Why do you have to make a decision asap? I don't think anyone here has tested DP4. Why is anything you see "shocking" ? How do you test at a store with the same software as you have on whatever phone you say you have? Why did you post this? Why did I reply? When is DP5 coming out already? When will TWRP be compatible with Nougat encrypted?
I am asking if N brings improvements to the device. 5 months ago, there wasn't any DP3 or DP4. Jeez, I don't see why you have to be so rude.

Asking if dev previews have changed anything is not what you asked or stated.
Edit.. well you kind of asked in a very round about way. Perhaps...
Has dp4 helped with some old reported issues like..

So, basically, you can get a new N5X for ~$175, net? I would take that deal for the guaranteed updates alone, plus the doubling from 16GB to 32GB.

You will never get a consistent answer on performance. Some people claim N5X performance is terrible, others say it is great. I have had it since launch and performance has been flawless for me. If you are a heavy gamer you would probably want better specs, but otherwise the N5X is solid.
My N5X has never overheated, nor has performance suffered due to throttling. But, I don't game, so I wouldn't expect to run into those issues. I don't have the dev preview installed (I rely on my phone too much day-to-day to install a beta OS), but reports have generally been very positive.
Personally, I don't get hung up on benchmarks. They don't reflect real-world usage, in my opinion -- a phone can score great on benchmarks and be crappy in real life usage (particularly if the phone has been engineered to over perform in benchmarks) and vice versa. JMO.

Thinking about buying the 5x

So I'm coming from a Sony Z3C and due to the lack of support (no Nougat for us) and development (no proper CM for us) I'm thinking moving to another device.
I'm taking into consideration Sony XZ/X as well as the S7, but none of them have development going on due to various reasons. So no development is not a solution for me.
Would you still recommend buying the 5X after mote than a year since the release? Do you enjoy yhe phone? Or do you have any recommendation? I don't have enough money for a Pixel, nor buy a phablet.
Thanks!
Nexus 5x devices have something like sudden death issue, motherboards die in a random moment. After replacing motherboard on warranty you will be no longer able to root your phone (or you will get your money refund)
So in that case, I wouldn't recommen this phone. This phone is great if it's working without any issues, but LG at the backs means that will not.
Do no buy nothing LG. Go for the Huawei 6p.

6P is too big
I can recommend. I have this phone since june this year, and as far its the best phone i had. No lag, manual camera + raw, exelent photos, fast update, great developer support and that fingerprint reader wich i LOVE. Only i can complain about size (little bit too small for me) and battery wich is average. From 7AM to 8PM and have 15% left (~4 hours SOT). It's the best phone so far. I am also Sony fan (or i will say "was") mine last Sony device was Z2 (neo v, S, T, Z, Z1).
Also build quality is crap. My Nexus Inprint plastic is shiny now (was mate). Also plastic round the phone is shining (always in mercury case). I can send a photo how it looks.
Phone is really good AND ITS CHEAP.
Wouldn't recommend battery life is horrendously bad.

I would recommend an LG G4 or a Moto X pure, both are more or less the same price i believe, and they are much better than the 5x in terms of a more premium feel and better performance (3gb ram vs 2gb on the 5x :/ ) I have had mines about 5 months and it's not to bad, but it still bugs me till today that there were better devices i could have gotten, guess i should have done more research , btw the oneplus 2 is also a great device for around the same price and great support and performance.

Don't ever buy a LG G4! It is the king of the bootloopers. All the 2015 LG flagship's have that issue G4, G FLex II, V10, V20, now G5 (2016) and well Nexus 5x too...
There is no solution for that failure. Motherboard replacement is not a deffinitive solution cause they never made a revisión or something to correct the mistake.
Have you seen the Xperia z5 compact? Very small size and powerfull. Thats the phone i want to get.

Xperias have problems with development because of the DRM partition - meaning no AOSP/CM ROMs working properly as a daily driver (I got a Z3C so I know). The Z5C sounds cool, but it has the not so acclaimed Snapdragon 820 with overheating issued, and as a Sony user I can say that the camera is horrid. Good sensor, horrible code optimization. Last, but not least, it may not get further than N. My phone didn't get N due to whatever reason, despite not being even 2 yrs old. The new XC or XZ looks nice. But even rooting requires unlocked bootloader, which leads to loss of DRM keys, which means loss of camera functions (noise reduction, low light shots, making it even worse than it is) and warranty.
For the old Z series there was something called TA Backup which made it possible to copy and restore the keys. For the new ones this isn't possible.
So here I am. Not knowing what to buy again due to the 5X problems..

I know, right? It's so hard to get a properly working phone. Not overpriced (Pixel), or bigger than 5.2" at most (means without OP, LG, HTC, Motorola) which has dev support (not like Sony or Samsung) and no hardware issues (see 5X). This basically puts me in a situation without a choice.

Exactly, i totally agree. Pixel is not a choice (is like an iPhone for me, you pay for how it looks) i just want something "small" 5.2" max not a phablet even the budget phones like moto g4 have 5.5 inch screen, really too big al least for me. I miss the nokia n73, moto razr v8, those were good little phones haha (i really like physical keyboards, but i know, that would be imposible in this times).

If you can get it cheap enough it's worth it even if it messes up. I had a nexus 6 and it was too large. Like you I don't like jumbo phones. The 5x is very light. Some may say it feels cheap but I like it BC it is sturdy and light. It certainly won't bend. Right now there are not many options. The camera aid good and it runs smooth despite 2GB of ram. There the bootloader issue but for cheap enough it's worth the risk to me. I love it as a daily and it fits much better in my suit pants than the other huge phones right now.
It is really sad that I got so few good reviews related to this phone. I guess I'll watch if the development of the new Xperias gets to the point where the DRM partition gets a possible backup and buy one of them....such a shame since Nexus was the most dev friendly.
Even subway surfers drops frames , probably cause of temp throttling (on stock), im really disappointed with this device and google... If i knew of bootloop problem and this temp throttle wouldn't buy it...no chance...

I'm very confused... I cannot decide whether the Nexus 5X would be a good deal or not: someone claims about (serious!) problems, someone says it's very good... I was a very lucky Moto G 2014 owner, but unfortunately its life came to an end. I wanted a quite cheap phone (maximum 270€) with an active development that can let me hope I will receive latest android versions (cyanogenmod) in a couple of months and I tought about a Nexus 5X, but if it has so many problems, is it better to find an alternative?

I've been facing the same problem for the past year or so, just because there haven't really been any devices that I could see as a replacement for my i9100. I finally made my decision though and I'm picking up a 5X tomorrow. If you want an affordable phone with a lot of custom ROMs and even long official support (especially rare with android), you don't have much of a choice. Of course there is the risk of that bootloop issue appearing, but that's what you have a warranty for. If the issue comes up a year later, you'll most likely get a refund and you've basically had a phone for a year for free. Plus I've also read speculations that Google tried to put the blame on LG, as pretty much every case of this bootloop issue happened after updating to Nougat. My guess is that there was an issue with thermal throttling not working right in the early Nougat builds for the 5X which made the phone more prone to failure. In that case I would say they've already fixed it but who knows..

Thanks Daniel, I was thinking to buy it at the end of the next week.. If yours arrives before that date, would you please be so kind and let me know how does it work?
And what about low RAM and poor audio quality? They were the main reason that stopped me from buying it till this afternoon, when I read this post. Are they really a problem?

All the Nexus 5X are dying?

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a second hand device because my old phone got screwd, while looking I found a Nexus 5X which looks good and also is working perfectly for now, but I'm reading everywhere that almost all the devices from LG that have the SD808 are dying (bootloop) (G4, V10 and N5X) and instead of repairing them, they are offering LG G5, which makes me also think that it just can't be repaired in any way, so right now I'm starting to think that this Nexus 5x problem is something like the Note 7 but less violent.. I mean, that it will happen to every N5X device sooner or later, and it being a second hand device I don't really want to spend 180$ for a 1-2 months device...
Is this looking like the Note 7 problem or? What are the chances? Would you reccomend me the Nexus 5x second hand in 2017?
And which other device can you reccomend me? I've been looking for the Original Nexus 5 but the camera and the SD800...
I'm very newbie on the forum so if this question doesn't go here change it's section please, thanks.
I have my Nexus 5X for over 6 monthes , without any problems...
maybe its a luck thing, but I trust this device to continue wokring ..
hope I helped you in somthing
(pay attention that not *all of the nexus 5x are dying , just some of them.. you can see that by the usage of the nexus 5x forms here at xda)
I would go for Nexus 6P instead, maybe Pixel if your budget can handle it.
IDK if they are repairable, but AFAIK one reason is that N5X is no longer being manufactured.

I can't afford it, I found a S5 Plus at about 165$ that lookgs good too... But It don't have too much community support :silly:
Hmm, I see, well, if there is someone who got it in bootloop before they stopped manufacturing it and can tell me if they repared it or directly changed it for a new one and still working, please.
i hope mine will die during next 12 monts to have a refound and by a new smartphone
Actually is working fine
I actually had a g4 that died a bootlooping death before I got the 5x and if you can afford it go for the 6p.

6p is about 100$+, and I'm reading it have the bootloop problem too...
BTW turning off the big cores solves the problem? If it works I would buy it anyway, I love the design and the camera on this phone, at this price.

Well I'm that case go for the 5x and another plus is that when official support stops the custom ROMs usually don't do you should never be stuck with outdated software
I think that was becouse of 7.0 early release. Mine nexus died too but i recovered him, from that day i still using 7.0 and now 7.1.1 without any problem. If you dont have enough money for 6P (wich i recommend, better battery life, performance, and display) You can try Nexus 5X, it's a great device but battery life would be better. :>
Choose Nex with warranty. If anything goes wrong Google will fix it (or LG). Good Luck

Yes, that is what I'm looking for, there is a shop that sells it (second hand, but with warranty from the shop), btw, how you recovered it?
Have my 5X (16b) since a year, and I think personally it's a really good phone (coupled with an external battery btw and with PureNexus 7 rom ), never had any bootloop brick.

Probably my EFS was messed up. Died in about 2 weeks after 7.0 release. I was fighting for his life almost 2 days! I was lucky that my phone was in unlocked state. I dont know exacly how i recovered him but i tried diffrent stock images, and twrp backups (incl. EFS) but no luck, when i was gonna to give up and send my device back to LG for repair i flashed old marshmallow stock image and on top of it backup from 7.0 (without changing vendor) phone booted up! And from that moment so far no problem with this bootloop. Nex is working strong from about 1yr no problems. Everything is working like this first day, but build quality is really crap.
I have my Nexus 5x working fine with Cyanogen 13 (so Marshmallow obviously).
As far as I can see, problems begin with Nougat.
As for bootloop, have you guys tried downgrading? I will not touch 7 until they fix all issues.

Here, https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1...D3_E-rXRZ-QMmxpR4D4IdwEWZYb2NKA/viewanalytics some people saying that happened on 6.0 too, maybe because of the lapse time, or maybe they got another type of bootloop.
Btw the ratio is very good, 103\1558.
I like that ratio

Since November my phone's battery started showing weird graphs in stats. There is an idle drain of almost 1.2%/h without any apps installed or even in safe mode. And when i calculate per-app breakdown it does not matches the drain percentage. I ignored that since i it has rapid charging which doesn't take that long to completely charge the phone.
But 4-5 days back my phone just rebooted while browsing chrome and kept on rebooting on boot logo for 3-4 times. After that it rebooted again and showed 'This device is corrupt' but phone was working as it was before reboot. Then i unlocked the bootloader and flashed the factory images. There was no issue for 2 days but last night it did the same i.e. rebooting again and again but this timei had to force restart it by holding power button since it got stuck on Android logo this time. After force restart I again got the message 'This device is corrupt'.
Hardware issue? If that's the case i am really just frustrated with this phone. Last September i got my phone's Display replaced because of dead pixels, then battery and now this.
I am going to visit LG repairs tomorrow.

Yes, what results in Daydream support. Additionally, it has bigger AMOLED display and full metal build (which is quite brittle, but that's not a problem for me personally). AAAND more RAM.
There is daydream support for nexus 5x too, check the apps section
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ne...d-daydream-vr-support-nexus-5x-t3518570/page2
2 gig ram is perfectly fine for me never had any issues. I play heavy games and use multitasking all the time.
On pure nexus rom everything is insanely smooth
I dont like metal build it doesnt feel good for me
Not that i want to argue but this phone is perfect, no need to pay 100€ more 6P has nothing more to offer
There has been also growing number of issues where the phone will completely die on the 6p despite having adequate battery:
http://www.techtimes.com/articles/1...hutdown-issue-after-android-nougat-update.htm
I don't know if there is really anything conclusive about this or the 5x, it's like which comes first the chicken or the egg (software vs. hardware).
I can say one thing though, if you get the phone cheap enough like I did (brand new 32GB, $200), then who gives a f--- if it messes up after 6 months. That's why I don't buy expensive phones anymore that way if it breaks or something happens I'm never out too much (I don't buy insurance, waste of money).

Still worthing buy the Nexus 5x in 2017?

Hello everyone!
So the new google pixel is out but it's pretty costly and since the budget is limited i was looking for a more economic option, so here i am.
Do you think that Nexus 5x is still good phone in 2017? Are you still satisfied with it or it should be better take a look for another phone?
Thanks in advance!
Best regards,

that's kinda single case. in general the N5X works very good, is easy to handle/to mod and its greatly supported by developers and Google.
also, the Nexus is always first in getting Android updates alongside with Pixel. so yeah, imo its still worth it to buy.

Yes, I agree, it worked very well before the problem.
Here you have.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4izdD7l3BWY
Satisfied, and it is still a decent device. But if you are a heavy user with so many apps and multitasking requirements, I'd advise against it as a daily driver.
Yes. After more than a month of use, updated to 7.1.1 and jan security update, so far no problem. This one is my daily driver.
For the "right" price of course. You should try and negotiate.
I can buy three Pixels with my budget, but Im not considering changing my 5x as a daily driver yet. Using it since jan 2016, not a single issue except for the back cover getting dirty easily. Light, not too big not too small, not expensive, powerful enough for almost any task, great display, decent stereo speakers with mod, accurate GPS, good battery life with 7.1.1, always up to date, durable and impressive cameras.
Theres no better smartphone on the market IMO, of course depending on your wishes, you wont need anything other that N5X cannot offer.
It depends on who you are. A heavy user playing games, having a tens of apps opened or rather a decent one with social/media focus? This being a good device for sorta a middle demanding user. It's still got very good camera, vanilla Android, regular updates, good dimensions etc... Speaking for myself, I've always been happy with it. It just fits my needs
It depends!
i have this device from 1 month! it not so much time .. but enought for test it in deep.
the value depends on how much money you will spend!
because the 5x have some deficiencies compare with over middle range! display - battery - audio-ram is under the average!
although the cpu is a very good compromise: good performance and very low heat! and the camera is very very good too!
take your sum but i suggest to look something else and more future-proof ( mininum 3 gb of ram )
ps. I bought it because a friend of mine gave it to me for 100 euro 32 gb hehehehe and it have just 5 months. DD
It is a good phone unless you have unreasonable expectations. Works good for me

Despite of the bootloop issue happening globally, I strongly suggest avoid buying it or any google device like 6P and other LG Devices for your own good
I just got mine early this month, I bought it coz I know it would still get the next Android version after Nougat. This thing takes great photos, arguably comparable or better than what the current flagships has to offer. And feels just as snappy. I would recommend it.

Of course not all of us would experience that right away, LG itself claimed the hardware problem presented on Nexus 5X devices which causes the device to loop endlessly, telling to refund them as they're no longer have the parts to repair it.
I have my 5X, I bought it 2016, January and I wasn't aware of the hardware problem happening on 5X due to the bad soldering on the motherboard which the flash memory and Snapdragon chip residing on, few days ago I didn't knew that was the end making my $400 phone a paperweight, the worse thing is warranty has already expired plus I'm living outside the US and Europe so Google and LG's support are unavailable and are out of reach, so what now? Google left me out of the blue for nothing on this crap phone. I'm a huge fan of their nexus devices and 5X was my first ever phone I bought and same reason as yours why I bought it, very disappointed so never again to them and LG.
It's not bad for me to say him avoid buying it because I'm just concerned about it, rather than blame everything at the end of the day when it happens...
My opinion: just buy it If you like the stock android with quick updates, and modding/custom rom
If so, it's excellent, great screen, great camera, a lot of community roms/mods so you cant get bored...
But If you are not going to enjoy that you better go to other option

They said the boot loops occurred after the Nougat update. I got the phone under marshmallow and updated it with no issues so far. Not sure if the boot loops occurs on all models though as there's a couple of them. I got the H791 (UK.EU version). Crossing my fingers.
Well, I got it for £200 and it is way worth the money. I think it's okay as a daily driver, but if you had the money - get the Pixel. It's just.. better. If the Pixel is a bit too much maybe get the Nexus 6P. It's an upgrade from this although personally I find 5.2" to be a perfect phone size, and alas the Pixel only comes in 5" and 5.5".
I'm using this as a daily driver with the following, it is still fast and amazing:
Pixel ROM (6.1)
F2FS Data & Cache Partitions
Adaway
Franco Kernel (r32)
SuperSU (SR3)
Naptime (Disable Motion, Instant Doze, and Exclude Fit)
L Speed (LNET Tweaked for Mobile Data, Disabled Debugging, and KSM Enable)
FKUpdator for HawkTail1.2 Governer
Thermal Throttling changed to 46 Degrees Celcius
XThermal Mod (for Charging)
Substratum for "Swift Dark Theme (7.1.1)"
TWRP Classic 3.0.2-2
UX Sound Mod (Final + HiFi)
My short answer No, do not buy. I was debating the Moto G4 Plus versus Nexus 5x last November and purchased the Nexus. It is impossible to say whether I would have liked the Moto better or not but I would research alternative phones before purchasing.
My longer answer is that the Nexus 5x works fairly well but often feels laggy, especially if you have too many chrome browser tabs open. Task switching often feels like my old memory constrained Windows 7 desktop computer. This is without playing any games or loading the Facebook app. These statements are made while running totally stock with the 7.0 OS release without any skins or launchers or widgets loaded. Also I might be primarily commenting on software issues with the Chrome Browser rather than the device itself but when on slow Wi-Fi or 3G connections I sometimes experienced greater than one second User Interface glitches when switching between apps or even getting the on screen keyboard to load in order to type. This all happened while on a long vacation/travel where internet access was often bandwidth constrained. Still I found the user experience to be poor even under good network conditions. I kept a few communications/text-chat apps loaded along with the browser and email and occasionally used some banking or calculator or news apps, enough that memory had to be reclaimed which appeared to be the biggest source of the UI pauses.
To add a little more context I purchased the 5x to replace my Asus Zenfone 2 after its wifi interface had died. The Zenfone 2 had 4 GB of memory and always task switched with ease and never felt laggy (though it was not a speed demon) even though it had a heavier skin. My old Nexus 4 was very SRAM constrained which eventually caused me to upgrade but it never felt as unresponsive as the newer 5x.

Then that's great for you your phone is running good 'til now. It just happened nougat is currently rolling out the time more and more users are getting affected because the older the phone, the more it's getting to an end, that's why lots of users feels like nougat is the problem when hardware is the fault itself, google and LG already declared their statement about it.
