I recently started experiencing random freezes and the device powers down and I have to boot into fastboot to get it to come back on. Anyone else having this issue?

Looks like way too many people are having this issue.
I counted maybe about 30 or 40 people how may have the sold thousands ?
I try to not run too may apps at once, I do not run any ad supported apps so far had no issues.
The tech support guys talking about rogue apps ? This does happen and there is nothing anybody can do.
Hardware issues nothing is perfect it can be 30 or 40 devices are defective.

I would say use your phone to the fullest, test everything and see if you too have any issues because the phone is in warranty now and if the phone has a hardware problem then it will be covered in warranty. Later on if you face problems then you will have to pay to get it fixed.

My first Pixel would randomly crash and reboot all the time. Sometimes looping 10x on and off. Eventually it'd settle down and let me use it. I sent it in and got a replacement. Since then I haven't had a single freeze or crash. My apps, settings, and files are identical to the first phone. Definitely send it in now, Verizon was nice enough to overnight me the replacement

Anyone know if this is a general WP7 problem, or if it's just the Trophy doing it? It's getting on my nerves, and I'm wondering who to blame

Lol I'm sorry for you.
My device never rebooted itself.
And freezed only once. The only unreliable behaviour I noticed was Marketplace - widely documented problem - and Weather Channel quit working once...
So I have no idea what causes that.
But it may be an app, badly written.
You're probably looking at a hardware problem. This happened to a number of HD2s too. I'd take it back to the store you bought it from, explain the problem, and use your warranty to get a new one.
Well, the reason I'm asking is that there are a lot of people in the Trophy forum reporting this behavior - in addition to me. If it doesn't happen to other devices, it's probably a design flaw, but I'm not taking my phone in until I can back it up

What do you need to backup. All your purchases can be re-downloaded for free. Contacts, emails, pictures, videos, etc. can be resynced. That's the beauty of the 'cloud'.

My LG optimus 7 rebooted randomly like yours. Now back in repairs, I'll suggest you send it back while it's still under warranty
Mine has rebooted itself a few times and I have a Samsung Focus. Personally I think its a memory management issue. Generally happens after running a lot of apps and the phone hasnt had a reboot in a while.

WP7 clears any memory aps use after the phone exits a program. And without multitasking, memory is not an issue. It's a hardware issue... usually with the internal processor.
I don't think it's a software flaw either, as a lot of people don't have this problem. Also, there are no programs running in the background, so that clears that issue. I suspect the phone developers have been in a hurry and have just pushed out handsets that are really just beta versions.
My LG Optimus 7 reboots from time to time, too.
My TMOUS HD7 has done this like 3 times in about a month and a half if that makes a difference to anyone. T-Mobile replaced my HD2 when it was doing this and the newer HD2 never did it.
Do you guys have bluetooth enabled? Just hit me yesterday that my problems started when I turned bluetooth on...
My bluetooth is off and I have this problem.
Ok, might be coincidence, but my phone seems to have stopped rebooting after I turned BT off. Not a single one in the last four days
Guess a single falsification of this expectation will do.
I have horrible spontaneous reboots on my N7 2013. Really hope the update will fix this. I monitored a lot of update threads but didn't find a confirmation (or falsification) yet that this issue is solved.
Reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380866&page=32 it might not fix the issue but the update isn't widespread enough yet for people to check. More reports will probably be here.

Ah! Someone reported in that thread today that he got a reboot on the new update. So, no fix. Terrible
try a factory restore, rogue apps etc. others on forum have reported fixing it by uninstalling chome beta, some IP TV monitoring app, etc.

Not for me, installed JSS15Q, multi touch issue is fixed, but reboot problem still remains.
The first 2 hours was OK after flashing, then reboot returned to every half an hour or so.
I have never had a random reboot on my device. Maybe I'm just lucky.
Bad news is that there have only been 123 people posting about this freezing, rebooting, etc issue.
Need everyone effected to make it known by posting there.... Or they won't take it seriously....

Should you be asking more people to post? Aren't you worried with 124 people Google may not get you the hand-picked replacement?
Just kidding.
I think they have two types of random reboots. One is software related which will eventually get fixed. Another is hardware related, which may never get fixed and will be left to the RMA process to resolve.
Doubting that would ever have been a possibility...
Fact is that a poster or 2 said basically, statistically, 123 out of the however many thousands were sold is little more than statistical noise.
I agree. I also see many more people posting here with varying degrees of issues, but all boiling down to the 3 issues : freezing, rebooting, GPS.
Maybe increasing the numbers will bring the statistics to a more accurate number.
It's almost 3 days, and I still haven't had the update pushed to mine yet.
Shine enough light on something and it gets attention...

It is silly to take 123 as an absolute # and say it is noise. You need to compare relative to other issues for the same user base to get a weighted #
Obviously many more than 123 are having the issue and obviously many people aren't.
If you sell 1m units and 10‰ have issues you still have 900k users with no issues wondering what you are complaining about. However 10% is actually a pretty high defect rate and can easily erase margins and erode your brand.
The question is not who is screaming the loudest, but whether your problem is a 1%, 10%, 20%, etc problem. I suggest you judge your problem relative to how many people complained about the GPS and multi-touch issues.
erratic touchscreen
216 authors
GPS searching
222 authors
Random freeze and restart
127 authors
So if you take GPS as the biggest issue by number of unique users
erratic touchscreen is being reported by about 97% of GPS levels
and random reboots is being reported by about 57% of GPS levels
We know Google addressed multi-touch and GPS issues and have asked for bugreports for random reboots so I'm sure it is on their radar. It probably is just a more complex problem to solve than updating drivers.
Any other issue being reported is just noise compared to these big 3. Other issues are probably at 1-10% of GPS levels.
I am running the 15Q update for past 30 hours and have had 2 random reboots about 16 hours apart. The first I was trying to. Test the GPS issues as I lost lock and GPS TEST was not seeing any satellites. The second I was reading an article in Feedly.

It must be on their radar. A random reboot is the most horrible thing that can happen to a user. Especially when it happens when you are writing that long, well thought mail to your boss asking for a salary raise.
I'm sure they received a lot of complaints about this from frustrated users.
Because of the severity of the problem and the number of people affected by this (not only xda members) it really makes me wonder why the don't respond to it with a statement. Then again, I agree, the problem can be very complex. A pain in the ass for Google also.
before i returned my nexus 7, the random reboot was always while pandora was trying to change songs. at the worst it was rebooting as many as 4 times in a 10 minute drive, making it a terrible device for a car stereo replacement combined with the gps issues.... glad the gps is resolved but i'm waiting for the reboots to be addressed before i give the tablet another try.

ATP their radar must be on fire, but, no, no response addressing the rebooting other than having the effected send logs.
In my case it only happened while it was asleep, and I'd only know it as the expected background apps weren't there, prompting me to check the up time.
I'm suspecting a lot of finger pointing between Google and ASUS going on in the background.
Either way, no help for those of us past our return window.
Only advice I can give is to return/exchange any device with the freezing, rebooting, touch or GPS issues while you can.
There are 'good' units out there if you want to take the time to find them.
Otherwise, keep an eye here: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/mobile/mG4JXaT-SHs/doD54oeEJrUJ to see how Google/ASUS is handling it.
Consumer Reports also had issues with their test unit:

Hello,
I just bought this Nexus 7 and it is simply stunning. However, I have been having issues with it rebooting suddenly especially after trying to wake it up. I don't know what is happening and I cannot seem to get adb in Windows 8 to recognize it (even with updated Google USB drivers, USB debugging on, and mode set to PTP). I can't get a logcat.
If anyone can help me figure out what is going on, I would much appreciate it. Especially if I can get adb to work.
Google tech support would tell you to do a factory reset. Maybe twice.
If that doesn't work, return it.
Even if it cures it for a while, it may return.
That would be the sign of a possible hardware issue.
Google doesn't acknowledge or address the rebooting issues.
And Windows 8 has been a nightmare for some so far as drivers.
Google the Nexus 7/Win8 drivers issue, and you'll find a ton of possible solutions and no consistency so as to have one concrete answer.

Just did that. I didn't want to reset it because of the time needed, but I don't have much of other options.
So far so good. If it continues to reboot, it isn't a big deal. I'm eyeing the 32 GB version anyway to swap for as 16 GB is a bit cramped.
Don't beat your head against a wall. Keep returning until you get a 'good' one.
I can't imagine the number of refurbished units that'll be offered for sale as soon as the real issue(s) get(s) found and addressed (if ever).
Whatever happens, don't get stuck as a lot of us did....

As soon as I had posted that previous post, it had just rebooted after being put into sleep mode. Went back to Staples, got me the 32 GB one, and we shall see if this one works better. Hopefully it is just a hardware issue (I'm thinking the S4 Pro may have had a hard time with the low voltage on sleep mode) If not, I'm going to troubleshoot; maybe an app is causing the crash, maybe the firmware is creating issues, or both.
I'm keeping everything packaged for right now with the exception of the tablet itself. I've got a charger which works fine with it. Gotta love the two week return policies.

Curious, it looks like Chrome Beta may be at issue. I use it because I like being on the edge. I'll install Chrome Beta, see if the issue returns. If it does, I'm uninstalling it for right now (or just not launching it).

I can confirm that chrome beta was 100% the cause of the reboots on mine. Gone a week without a single reboot after uninstalling, and I had about half a dozen a day when it was installed.

In my case, I've got Chrome rolled back to original and disabled and still have issues, admittedly the rebooting happens while asleep for the most part so that isn't nearly as intrusive as the frequent freezing.

Anyone else experience random mobile data time outs? Not sure what causes them to occur, but it is annoying. Nothing brings the data back, except waiting.
Am I the only person experiencing something like this? I bought this phone 3 days ago through T-Mobile. It was shipped with Oreo preinstalled. Let me know if anyone has experienced this.
I would call Motorola/Lenovo/T-Mobile about the issue. You shouldn't be dropping mobile data like that.

They made me do a network reset, and ASSURED me that it will not happen again. Of course, I know better, and I know that this doesn't do crap. Lol.
I'm returning my device for a full refund (I purchased my device through customer care, so no restocking fee). I'm not going to bother with the troubleshooting.
I have also noticed that the problem goes beyond mobile data. It times out of wifi as well. Might be an isolated problem, but I'm not willing to deal with that.

Sad to see a community member returning the phone. Thanks for letting me know though! I haven't had it happen to me since so like you said it could be just an isolated problem. All the best!
Cheers,
Yeah, I was beginning to like it. If the phone was a few months old, and took a few drops, I would have tried harder to troubleshoot or get it replaced by Tmobile. However, the phone is 5 days old. I'm not letting the 14 day grace period escape me.

Mine was a Sim card issue that provided the same predictable behavior on multiple devices. Try getting a new one.
Did all that and replaced phone also data reset t mobile said they tryied everything possible. All stared after Oreo update.
Anyone has same problem? It like that from open box. I just wonder is it normal or I should bring it to warranty.
Could be hardware, firmware or more likely settings and/or apps.
I return it but you can play with it and try to track it down in the meantime.
Carrier, even factory phones can behave like this so there's no guarantee the next one doesn't do the same thing.
Does this happen in safe mode too?
If not it's likely a 3rd party app maybe bloatware that's responsible.
It is still hot in safe mode. Both wifi only or 5g mode. Seem like hardware problem as no one else face this issue.

Clear system cache.
Try a hard reboot.
Do a network reset.
Try turning off wifi... try to narrow down which apk(s) are responsible.
Clear caches and data as needed.
Many times it's a settings or app issue... if the new one does the same thing you'll be irritated.
However something must be done as it's toasting the battery.
It can be quite frustrating.
It definitely heats up to above 43 degrees Celsius by any intense CPU actions, I'm not sure if it is the battery or the CPU, but the lower half heats up even by updating a few apps, in normal use such as browsing I don't really face any heating issues.
It's the device using excessive current not the battery. The high current drain causes the battery to become warmer which is normal but far from desirable.
