Does anybody know who actually manufactured the Pixel C? I understand Google don't actually make stuff themselves!
I'm not sure but I believe, for once, it actually was google.

But here's the truth, according to a person briefed on Google's plans for the merger: while Google may have originally wanted to buy Motorola for its patents only, it has come to realize that it wants to follow Apple's lead when it comes to smartphone and tablet computer development. A second source, also briefed on Google's plans for Motorola, confirms this is true.
Well, it would be strange to own Motorola and give HTC money for building Nexus X.

no, it wouldnt. google and motorola will never be one and the same. and google doesnt want to lose htc, samsung, sony, etc., and having motorola building all the nexus devices would lead to that.

Thats the true.
I hope to see something really interesting coming google with motorola, specially unlocking bootloaders!!
With all the talk about how Google is changing their focus to be more mainstream, has there been any mention if they will still be releasing the "factory" images for any major updates/security patches like they have in the past for Nexus devices? I could not find any information about this.

No, no news yet. I think there's a chance they won't because this isn't a Nexus. Who knows though.

Well I saw on https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
They might because if you see the Google Pixel C factory images are there,
I assume they would release them for the Pixel phones same place when released
Remember not released yet or launched why would files be in public yet.

I know they won't be there now but usually stuff like this leaks or Google confirms now that the phone has "launched". Guess I'll wait until release.

Pixel device Factory Images should still be available, if going by precedent.
Plus since Google doesn't have a Physical repair center and Pixel owners most likely will not be able to get support from local provider: It would be very wise to allow Pixel owners the ability/convenience to 'Factory Update refresh'
They will most likely be posted
I can't imagine it would be much different from the Pixel C in regards to factory images.
Pixel and Pixel XL System Image

Above link found on reddit. Not from official sources, I think.
Pixel and Pixel XL images are up at the Nexus Factory Images site.
Hello XDA. Long time lurker, 3rd time poster.
I recently got the Pixel 2 XL. Love the phone. Found something unusual and Google support didn't have an answer.
I was whitelisting some apps from inside PIA VPN as downloads won't work in many apps with the VPN on for some reason. As I was scrolling the list, I found two Verizon system files or apps that don't show up anywhere else. They aren't apps, or show up under processes in developer options. I imagine they would show up under titanium backup but I'm trying not to root so I can take advantage of monthly updates. I don't have Verizon, and I bought this phone from the Google web site. One is called vzw_multicast_mw and the other is called my Verizon services.
Does anyone else notice this? Does anyone know what these are? As I said, I have only used this phone on Project Fi. I can speculate all day but really I don't want them there. Support offered to replace my phone but I'm thinking every Pixel 2 has these files and I'm the only one that noticed. Can anyone else who is running a pixel 2 that's not or ever been on Verizon confirm/deny? I've included screenshots. I really want these gone. They might be sending analytics to Verizon.
Yes, AFAIK the base images include some amount of software from the big carriers that you can't get rid of. I'm on Verizon and also see vzw_multicast_mw and My Verizon Services, but also hidden apps "Sprint DM" and "Project Fi". There has been carrier-specific software included in the base images since at least the Nexus 6, maybe longer.
If you don't want to root I'm not sure there's much you can do about it. FWIW, it doesn't bother me.
Verizon snoopware?
I didn't see the Sprint stuff which is why I was concerned. It's not interfering with my phone that I can tell, or even that they are active. I was wondering if there was a Verizon/Google conspiracy here that Verizon manged to include snoopware on all Pixel phones. I guess I'm tired of the lack of transparency. It took 5 Google support staff before they finally gave up and offered me a replacement, which I don't think will actually matter. It's telling that their own support staff has no idea, though I shouldn't be surprised. They are probably trained to deal with end users, not phone nerds.
I'll probably give in and root eventually, but I've never owned a phone with monthly updates so I'm giving that a go. I guess I'll ignore them for now. Still would be interested to hear what exactly they are as I feel like so far this is all just a guess.
See here is the thing. All devices that are global will have all the needed carrier files for it to work. Verizon needs those files or the device won't work on their network
Hi
I apologise if this is already answered elsewhere but from what I read answers vary.
If a used unlocked pixel is bought and a different carrier is used than the one originally used, do ota updates still occur automatically or do they need to be done manually?
If ota updates do work with a different carrier does that mean the updates come from google or the carrier for this phone?
Thanks!
Hi
Well updates come from google directly and I didn't have any issues switching carriers so all good. Quite a departure from my lg v20 which I like too...but things much simpler with pixel 3a, 3a xl.
None of the waiting around for infrequent updates/upgrades. I'm assuming with time a simple root procedure will be available also, it's probably already simple but haven't tried looking at that yet.
Still like my v20 hardware but the grass looks greener over here (despite no replaceable battery).
The pixel 3a xl is very nice to use so far! Hope google keeps these kinds of mid range phones (in price only) in it's future product offerings. Seems you get good hardware AND software support but everybody on this forum already knows that already, lol, I'm just catching up and finding out - hopefully no arm twisting curve balls come up when rooting and modding if I ever go that way.
Cheers
I can't help but wonder what is so special about the Pixel 6s that they are the only phones to not receive the customary monthly update. Did Google break something they cannot fix? I am for the first time tempted to install a custom ROM if this is the best Google can do!
Google didn't break something they couldn't fix. There is an unsubstantiated rumor Google is dealing with an issue stemming from backporting some Pixel 7 features to the Pixel 6.
Stop being so melodramatic.
Yeah, what he said. Its not the end of the world that you didn't get your monthly update that you can't tell the difference with by last week.
However, I actually would VERY STRONGLY recommend you try out GrapheneOS. For *different* reasons than what you've referred to, it is a vastly superior product.
