I found it wasn't great in the dark, I assume it uses the light sensor to determine if in pocket etc
Sent from my Google Pixel XL using XDA Labs

I have noticed the same thing. It isn't 100% consistent.

FWIW: Mine seems to be very consistent if I triple tap. Perhaps the first tap wakes it up if it's in a deep sleep?

Hopefully fixed in the December update.

Has been working consistently for me so far. Will post back if that changes.

OK, still not working consistently. I don't get what's happening to make it randomly not work. When it doesn't work, it doesn't matter how many times I tap it does NOTHING. Then if I unlock it with my fingerprint and shut it off again it immediately lights up the ambient display like I just tapped on it again.

I can't tell you the "why". But I can tell you that mine does work consistently if I tap it 3 times. Something's different in our devices, or our setup....
Edit: not 5 minutes after posting this, my XL started randomly not responding to dttw.

Makes no sense. I'm glad we are seeing the same issues though, at least it's consistent there

I'm having the same exact issues. Tap not working consistently and sometimes the lift doesn't work either. Hmm.

It's worth noting I had the same issues with the Elemental kernel before this ddtw option was available. The ddtw option was just as inconsistent for me.

Neither working at all for me.
Update: Seems to be working fine now.

if you have a screen protector that might cause the issue
if it still doesnt work without screen protector reflash the factory image

The update seems to fix the issue.
Update: the issue still there. But much less frequent

The is double tap to wake? Is this with a custom kernel? Otherwise I didn't know this was an option. How do you activate that feature?

I have noticed that is works better if the screen is locked. So if your phone doesn't lock for 5 or so minutes, it may not work until after that time. Try to set your phone to "Power button instantly locks" and then try it. Mine was not working at all, but when I locked the device sooner, it started to work consistantly. Might not help you, but fixed it for me.

Works fine for me, do you have a tap on?

December OTA. Same location as other Moves/ gestures.

FWIW: what I've noticed is that if my phone is sitting on something, DTTW works 100% of the time. If I have it in my hand, it's very sporadic.

Unresponsive and Crazy touchscreen

Received my phone yesterday, and when I was browsing it , the screen went crazy, and unresponsive. did a factory reset and the problem still persisted. Opened a return request at amazon so they can send me a new one. Don't know if anyone had the same issue or it was just me. Here is a video
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12983778/VID_20150527_213832648.mp4
Please check if TalkBack is enabled. If this setting is enabled, the touch screen may behave differently and appear to be defective. Instead of one tap to open an item, you will need to tap once until it highlights with a green box around the selection, then double tap to open. Also when swiping it may require using two fingers instead of one. You may also be hearing voice prompts to every action made.
To disable go to Apps/Settings/Accessibility/Talkback - turn off.

Same problem
Hi,
I had the same issue! I getback the phone in guarantee to Taiwán. The seller says that the phone was repairde, the display was changed.... finally 2 weeks ago I reicived the Zenphone 2 (1.5moths since the deal). Now today the phone have the same issue, I try to clean the dipslay phone and suddenly the touch screen have the same issue, crazy and unresponsive screen!! I very frustaded about the ASUS Brand! tell me what's happened with your phone?
thanks
Xytrax
Try to delete user data, then factory reset and then wipe cache. If after this you're still in trouble simply use warranty:hardware problem, asus fault.
You must use 2 fingers when you type to get through the setup. I know its a pain but when you are able to get in, turn "TalkBack" off.
I bought a zenfone 2 64gb on amazon and I had the same random issues: unresponsive touch screen, unsensitive, ghost touches.
I guessed that it could be the screen protector but it was still happening after remove it.
So, I asked to amazon a replacement.
After a perfect week, I am starting to have the issues, again!
I sold my oneples one to avoid touch screen issues. I am very upset!
I'm having the same issue as you guys. I also noticed that cleaning the screen with a rag (especially the one for glasses) makes the touch screen go crazy. At first i tried to downgrade the firmware, unluckily i had the issue again. Then i upgraded the firmware from the phone and now it's all going apparently well. I'll update for any news.

To anyone who have this issue: Try to test touch screen by SMMI's test option. Open calculator, type ",12345+" (with the comma), then "=" (equals). SMMI menu will show up. Now "single test", then "touch test".
In my case this process gives a straight line of unwanted touch inputs in the upper region of the screen ( sometimes multiple dots in a row forming a complete straight line). Do you guys have the same result?

It's a software related problem.. Because we're a lot of ppl suffering this problem. But, don't know why, ASUS is ignoring us.
I have sent my phone for repair. They say that they will replace the whole display.
Hi guys. I have almost identical issue and this seems like a hardware fault. I sold the Zenfone 2 to a friend and after 2 months she complains about the unresponsive touchscreen only at the top of the display..... I have the phone with me now, trying to fix it.. Did a factory reset, firmware upgrade, no results. Definitely a hardware issue and it is seems that lots of people are affected. So dissapointed by Asus......
If it's a hardware issue why is it so many people experiencing this now together all in the same time? Not earlier not later? My guess will be software problem. But I'm not sure
Any of you guys have a microsd card installed?

GPS issues using Maps

I don't know if it's just my unit or there is an inherent problem with the pixel XL 2. It cannot seem to register my location accurately even with high accuracy on. Directions has been useless for me over the last few days. Anybody else have this issue?
If it does not improve rapidly, I'm going to start an RMA...
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using XDA-Developers Legacy app
i started a RMA this morning after going thru support trying all their troubleshooting steps with no luck.. GPS can lock at times.. but seems to not hold too well..
the reliability of it is very reminiscent of the early batch of Nexus 5 phones.. which were also LG built.... goodness gracious.. history is repeating itself again..
I'm guessing it's your phones. Mine holds lock perfectly. Used navigation for almost 8 hours over the weekend. Never lost connection once.

Actually, it just started working correctly when I got home to MN from NY, so I happy now...
Op. Have you tried 8.1 dev?
The question is what settings do you have on? i usually have wifi and gps on since wifi can help with locking into your location at times.
Have you tried making sure wifi is on as well?
I have this exact same issue.
I find if you toggle the GPS off and back on, it immediately starts working again, only to stop working in another 1-2 navigation sessions.

I've noticed the same thing - toggling location services off and on fixes the issue when it happens, which makes me suspect it's a software issue.
I use my GPS A LOT between navigation and playing pokemon go, and the issue has only happened 3 times over the last 1 1/2 weeks. I imagine a lot of people wouldn't notice the issue if they don't use GPS too often, as for the most part, it works perfectly.

Yeah. I do a lot of on demand delivery, so I'm using my GPS and navigation ALL day long.
Somewhat off-topic, but for those of you who are using GPS and maps all day long, is there any way to get the screen to turn off between turns? I am finding that my battery is draining a lot faster than usual compared to previous phones.
I wouldn't make such a big deal about it, if it didn't take 4 hours for this thing to charge...

Same here. On demand delivery and moonlight as a driver.
My Pixel 1 didn't have this issue.
I noticed that GPS would not work 3/10 times when I use Google maps. Resetting the map app wouldn't work at all.
I'll try toggling "location" on and off the next time I noticed GPS not working.
Aside: I experienced screen burn in with the Pixel 1. Some I use maps often, the navigation bar would always be up. Google should hide the navigation bar. I guess I'll try immersive mode to lessen the chance of screen burn in.

I remember there used to be a setting that maps would put the phone asleep and then the screen on when a your approaching a turn.
I guess they removed that feature. I don't see it anymore.
Just had these issues again. My GPS keeps showing me that i'm facing in the wrong direction, often times by a 90 or 180 degree angle. So if it tells me to turn right on the map, how do i know where to turn if it shows i'm facing the wrong direction? Restarted, no difference.

I haven't tried the 8.1 Dev update yet, but I just got the November 2017 update with some fixes and screen setting changes and it did NOT fix this issue for me.
I second your compass need calibration. Has maps asked you to calibrate? My GPS was off today on maps, it asked me to calibrate and that fixed the issue.
same issues
I'm having the same problems with my Pixel 2 XL, and it is shown clearly with the GPS Status app - at times my GPS signal will toggle on and off randomly, with no reliability whatsoever. Other times it simply refuses to initialize. I haven't tried turning location services on and off yet, but I did get a warranty replacement phone from Verizon, and it had the same issue. I opted to return the replacement phone, since there was no fix.
I've got video of the failure, but I can't seem to post it as I'm too new to the forum.

I had this yesterday, it was an exact 180 degrees off (opposite direction). Recalibration couldn't fix it.
Did anyone do an RMA yet? Did it resolve the issue.
I thought the November update would fix it, but it hasn't.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled maps and I still have the issue. I would see my location being tracked on Google maps as I'm driving but Google maps wouldn't provide me turn by turn directions. It'll just be a dot instead of the arrow.
The only way to get it to work is by toggling location off and on.
Pixel 2 XL GPS problem - possible fix.
Hi
I've been having the same problem, my phone would not find the GPS satellites. I found that if I set location services to device only the GPS was not picking up any satellites. I turned location services off, restarted the phone and turned location service on, opened the GPS satellite app I have and the satellites appeared. This might be worth a try. I can't report that this solves the problem long term but it's been working for a few minutes which is better than before!!

GPS is still working without any obvious issues.

Are you on Android 9.0 final release?
Have you guys tried to factory reset?

Yeah, it hasn't worked for a while. I've been using P since beta 2 and I factory reset every single beta update including the now released final Pie.
Don't bother factory reseting, it won't fix it.

I haven't noticed battery improvements for any phone that ever claimed better battery. I always have to top up every phone I've had after work. I'm a heavy user tho, but no phone has ever given me "amazing" battery. This phone is no different. I've had A LOT of different phones too.
I'm experiencing the same issue. Also experiencing double notification sounds for some incoming messages. Mostly annoying but would like to see a fix.
Messages version: 3.4.048, last updated 8/7/18
I've been running the beta from the start without this problem on my Pixel XL. Just updated my wife's Pixel XL and she reported the problem to me. It wasn't until I enabled and disabled this feature that I had this problem. Now I can't turn it off. It seemed to start after installing the Digital Wellbeing Beta. Wouldn't that be ironic.
I got an update for Messages last night and now I'm finally seeing suggested replies in the notification shade. Also...now the notification sound when sending is working but it's not using the 'swoosh' type sound and instead is using the sound I have picked when receiving messages.
Yeah I just got the pie update on my phone (Pixel 2 XL) and I can't seem turn off outgoing notifications. I went to settings and clicked that setting off. It still will not turn off. I never even knew my phone had this function until this update but it is driving me crazy.
Just switched to Pie on my Pixel 2 XL two days ago and got the messages update as well.
I have the same issue as a few others have mentioned, I now have an outgoing sound when previously I did not and there is no way to turn it off. The switch in Messages to turn it on/off does nothing and it is the same sound as the 'received' message notification.
Well I got it to stop but can't get it to turn back on. I went into settings -> apps -> messages (app) -> storage and cleared both the storage and cache. Now it no longer sends out going message sounds. The problem is I can't turn it on or off. Lucky for me I just want it off.
Silly question: does clearing cache and storage delete all of your messages? This happened immediately after I upgraded my Pixel 2 XL to Pie....like everyone else.
Sadly it was only a temp fix. Today the outgoing sound came back.

Phone will no longer vibrate

When I got my device, the vibration was strong. Now I have no vibration whatsoever. All settings are good. I can't even get haptic feedback. I searched in Google and saw a couple others with this problem. Sounds like a hardware issue to me. Anyone else experiencing this yet? SM-N975F/DS
Dial *#0*# and run vibration test. That should tell you if it's hardware. If it works I would reset it, if it doesn't I would sent back.

So my note 10+ started doing this this morning. I do the phone test and it vibrates, but is weaker. Keyboard vibrate doesn't work. Notification vibrate doesn't work, nothing else vibrates. Not sure what is going on.
Edit: looks like something turned my vibration sensitivity way down. Working now!
No problem on my N975F/DS with vibration after official Android 10 update. Vibration test, keyboard feedback, vibrate on phone call also work as before...
@OnnoJ same problem, after update, vibration stop working... altough it could be that it didnt work before i am not 100% sure

I am also having this issue after the screen has been off for a while. Anyone have a solution?
I also have this issue, noticed it seems to be something to do with the ambient light sensor? If I cover it up double tap or tap to wake won't work ( like it's in pocket mode).
Pocket mode is no longer an option so it's like it's built in now?
But yea for me it seems like it works fine in the day, but soon as night comes along and I'm in dimmer environments it becomes flakey

This has been my experience today.
There's a thread on this in the 7 Pro forum with a possible solution. Looks like it's worth a shot:

No.
I found a problem with no proper configuration of greenify. After some changes, tap to wake is working with no problems.

Hey guys,
same for me since today. Until some hours ago all was working fine.
But why you think it's related to dimmer/light. Because for me there is no difference when I turn on the light in room or change the timezone in settings. For now it's just not working (like broken)
I rebooted (also turned off and on) several times, turned off and on the inactivity display settings and some other tests, but nothing helped.

Like for some others in the thread the factorymode won't be opened via *#808#
But I see the process installed and running when searching for it in settings. Maybe there is something crashed in bg?!

UPDATE
Suddenly it began working again...
No changes in location, lighting or whatever (except 39 minutes).
But not I can confirm this laggy working of this function. No idea why...
Last days it worked like 10/10 but now maybe 4/10.

Launching the camera in landscape mode seems to trigger it for me occasionally.
Today the rollout for version 10.0.5 was announced and should fix this DT2W bug.
Let's see if it's true.

A through clean up resolves the problem for my phone
i am facing the same issue with my phone. sadly i have noticed it is a reoccurring problem and it has something to do with the sensors. i tried all the fixes like toggling tap to wake, toggling face unlock assists light, clearing the cache and app data but nothing helped my case. factory reset is of no help either so i'd say don't even bother with that.
what really helped me fix this issue multiple times was something rather unexpected. what you should do is take off your phone's cover, get a wet towel, and thoroughly clean the phone all around, being especially thorough around the front facing camera and the top two edges. I give it extra attention around the front side being careful of the top speaker and after a couple of cleans and wipes both tap to wake and lift to wake starts working perfectly fine. then i put on the cover and voila it all good. Give it a try and let me know if it helped resolve this issue for you.

Hey!
The (single) tap to wake funktion will show up the ambient display, so that u can see clock, messages and use the fingerprintsensor if u want to enter.
It's a quick awake of screen to see Infos with minimal usage of display resources.
DT2W (double tab to wake) is the same as pressing the power button. So this will fully turn on screen into the lockscreen and also activate the face recognition. (for sure fingerprintsensor can be used, too)
BUT you can only activate one of those things and it will automatically turn off for example tab to wake if you activate DT2W.
Personally I like to use the single tab awake for ambient display, as I always can full activate by power button, which would be a dublicate function then.

First ppl with new update (only some hours, max a day of usage) reported in OP Forum that they didn't have any problem for now.
So seems to fix this screen awake problem.
