issues with incoming calls... - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

Has anyone had any issues regarding incoming calls where the phone rings, you answer it, and though you are clearly connected you can't hear anything from the other person and they can't hear you? This has happened repeatedly however upon testing, it seems temporarily fixed by rebooting? What gives?

Try falshing ur device with stock firmware once ...that ll fix it

I believe this is actually linked to the loudspeaker fix that was posted to rectify the low volume of notifications. I haven't done the fix after the last reboot and it seems to be fine now. Which kinda sucks as that means I'm stuck with low notification volume until a patch is released... Also there is no stock firmware to flash yet on the American unlocked model as far as I know

[Q] Call muted when there's another incoming call

After 30 minutes of going through posts in this forum trying to look for a solution, and apparently I couldn't find what I was looking for, I've decided to create this post.
Something really weird started happening to my arc recently. Whenever there's an incoming call (call waiting) while I'm talking on the phone, everything gets muted immediately. I cannot hear the other party, and vice versa. Even though I answer the call waiting call, we couldn't hear each other at all. I had to reject the call waiting call in order to be "connected" with the current call again. At first I thought it was some carrier, reception issues, but it's not. The bars were full and I've tried restarting the phone, but it didn't help. I was wondering if anyone has the same issue after upgrading to 2.3.3 and how did you fix this? I didn't notice anything like this before I upgraded. Any help is appreciated!

Do you have the Viber app installed? I saw somewhere that some phones react like this because of Viber.
Sorry I don't seem to have noticed that either and I recieved a call waiting bleep while I was on a call just yesterday
I can confirm its the Viber app, I just uninstalled it and the problem is gone!

Can't hear callers when using speakerphone

Hey all,
Just wondering if anybody is having a similar issue. Before I get started I did a quick search and havent found any recent threads stating the same issue.
What happens is often I will place a call and immediately switch to speakerphone so I can put the phone down and be handsfree, however for some reason I cannot hear ANYTHING the other line is saying, but they can hear me just fine. Switching back to earpiece does nothing either. This problem has been happening for about a week or so.
The only remedy I have found is to either call back, or reboot my phone but both of these options are unacceptable IMO.
Has anybody else experienced this? If so, what was your solution? I have gone through all the call settings and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary. I don't mute or hold calls and my call volume is almost at max.
Any help or input is appreciated.
Same problem since I went to lollipop. Met a lgcrep who had never seen this
Thanks for the response. It must be a pretty bad software bug then
The problem is with the 3/19 update of the Google search app. Either roll back the build on your phone or disable OK Google from any screen. Same problem exists on KitKat.
OMG thank you so much!
I was starting to think I would never be able to use speakerphone again

You are welcome. I almost RMA'ed my phone. Apparently, lots of people have already only to have the same problem as soon as they apply updates.
Here's the apk for the older version. Make sure that you roll back updates to the installed version of Google (and turn off auto-updates) before installation:

Same issue

I had this same issue and disabling the from any screen feature fixed it. I do like that feature however and would like to continue to use it. Do you know if the version in your link supports that function? If not do you know if there's a version that does that does not interfere with speakerphone function?
Thanks.

Audio problem

Verizon google pixel xl 128gb
i successfully unlocked bootloader on the first try and installed googles latest image and ive been experiencing some problems with the audio. at first it wasn't playing anything at all. top earpiece works fine with calls and voicemails. but when i tried to play music or system sounds nothing would happen. ive restarted the phone multiple times and it worked but it kept cutting in and out. has anyone run into this problem before?
Yup same here. Verizon Pixel XL with unlocked bootloader, rooted, on the most recent November OTA. My audio would work for a while, but after the phone goes to sleep sometimes, the audio just stops working. I'll hear a pop from the speaker when the audio is supposed to start, but no audio afterwards. I can still get audio from the headphone jack and bluetooth though. A restart usually fixes it, so I don't think it's a hardware issue. Most likely a driver/software issue.

Yes same here when I would get a notification sometimes instead of the full notification chime it would kinda just do a quick pop/squeak ...I'm wondering if our devices have defective speakers or if it's just software. Can you do a quick test for me? Download AnTuTu benchmark and run it,and on the first video scene I think it is called maroon turn your volume all the way up and then try to turn it down one click and then back up and then back down and see if you here a clicking noise when your adjusting the volume back and forth

I'll try that. Out of curiosity though, are you also on the November Security Update? I haven't seen a lot of people complaining about this (this is a pretty serious issue) and I know a lot of people haven't gotten the OTA yet. So maybe the November OTA broke it.
Edit: Ran the test, I get the clicking noise.

Yes I am on the November update but I also experienced this problem on the original October release. I even tested on completely stock (no root) and still got the crackling with AnTuTu. I made a thread about it but it got buried somewhere

I updated my other post. I get the same results you were talking about.
Edit: also, I've seen some people complaining about a similar issue on the Pixel C. They say certain apps caused this issue. For instance, do you run Greenify? Because it seems like this happens after the phones goes into sleep mode.

Thanks, I'm going to hang out and see if anyone else chimes in with more info before declaring it hardware issue
Edit - no greenify like I said I tested on a complete stock factory reset with only antutu installed
My audio hasn't cut out for 4-5 hours now. I turned the volume down a bit and it hasn't acted up since.

Can't hear caller on phone call - can you help?

I have recently sold my OnePlus 3 but have a return request with the following message, see at end of this post.
They have an issue with hearing the caller when making phone calls. It's not a speaker issue as it 'works fine for a while'. It works fine on hands-free.
Has anyone had this issue, and can help me? Could it be a BT issue with the hands-free?
I've never had a problem with the phone but haven't ever had a hands-free device connected. An online help guide that I've read says to turn off BT devices as this could be the cause.
Obviously that's not a solution for him as he needs to use hands-free, but are there known issues with some BT devices? Incompatibilities, or anything I could suggest to him to fix the issue?
Here are the details that have been sent to me. Thanks!
'There is a fault with the phone, in that you can only make and receive calls when it s on hands free mode.
if it is not you cannot hear anything the person on the other end can hear you but you cannot hear them. unless you reboot the phone then it works fine for a while before going back into faulty mode again I have done a full factory reset and the fault is still there.
I wish to return this phone for a refund as it is clearly faulty.'

YES I WASNT THE ONLY ONE!!!!!
But I had this issue just about every stock and stock based rom. Even most custom roms. But there is hope I seemed to fix it, for myself at least, by flashing eliminators resurrection remix nougat rom. His rom build is my favorite I've ever flashed on a phone, PERIOD. if your new to custom roms get the open gapps mini package and remember to select arm64 on the far left row, 7.1 in the middle row and mini on the right row.
Great thanks for replying!
What model hands-free device were you using, out of interest? I'm wondering if there is a compatibility issue.
I've had an update from the buyer and I was incorrect...
The issue doesn't involve a BT hands-free. (By hands-free, they were referring to using the phone's loudspeaker.)
----
The issue is that the phone's earpiece simply stops working.
It works for a bit after a reboot, but then stops working again.
I think it may be a hardware issue, given that they have tried resetting the phone, and so have given them a refund :'-(
I'm still hopeful that it will work ok for me. Fingers are crossed..

There are a couple of threads on XDA relating to low call volume. See if they help you.
One of the fixes is to clean the earpiece and the other is to flash a zip file.

Low sound volume issue post AT&T Oreo update

Ever since I updated to 8.0 last week I have had to reboot the phone on a daily sometimes twice daily basis because all the sounds randomly become very low even though the volume for all sounds is at max. Very irritating. Anyone else experience this issue?
i have this exact same issue on my device i did a factory reset and it did not go away. this is why they need to unlock the bootloader so we can fix our our issues. im working on a flash script that i will test since i have others i can use if i need to rma this device.
You would think others will be chiming in here shortly after they update. I doubt we are the only ones that will notice this issue. I would hope and expect MOTO/Lenovo to push an update out to fix this and any other issues that may have been noticed in the Oreo update. This I can at least live with as annoying as it is, Unlike my issue with my GEAR S3 Frontier no longer charging post the Tizen 3.0 update!!!! Samsung has yet to address this bug rendering this product useless for now.
i called at&t and they are replacing the device since they dont have a way to revert the software or unlock the boot loader to allow me to fix this my self. once my rma shows up i will be doing some very risky mods to the device. lets see if we can get some traction on this device.

T-Mobile variant here. I notice this randomly too. As best I can recall it only occurs when I disconnect my Bluetooth headphones. Toggling Bluetooth on the phone seems to reset volume levels.

Nice! I will try this next time it happens- Much better than rebooting each time.

I tried it and it worked! Much better than having to reboot the phone everytime the volume takes a dump.
Good to hear it works for you as well. Maybe Moto will fix that bug in the next update, there is a lot of talk on the Lenovo forums about Bluetooth issues since the Oreo update.
