I can't seem to get the phone to make the charging sound when I plug it in and when I unplug it. I did make sure to turn it on in the settings. My USB C adapter that attaches to the micro USB comes off quite often while driving and I would not hear a sound to tell me that it stopped charging. Any help would be appreciated.

Same here! I have confirmed the settings are enabled and correct, but no matter how many time I plug and/or unplug my device, I get no sound notification. Strange...
The charge sound thing hasn't worked for me even since owning the Nexus 6P. I don't really care for it honestly, but it feels like some of those sounds are forgotten relics by Google.
Same here. It hasn't worked since day one. Not a deal breaker for me, but I kind of like hearing (knowing) that's it's plugged in correctly and charging.
Thanks for checking all. Not a deal breaker for me either, just a minor annoyance.

Maybe there's an update coming that will fix this for us?
You know, mine doesn't either, but I didn't even notice because I'm so used to it from Nexus phones.
the charging sound is only for wireless charging, since the pixel/xl doesnt have wireless charging, you will never hear the sound.
Mine doesn't work either. I submitted feedback in support for this.

This doesn't make sense. I think you're wrong. Plus, if that's the case, it should (and in all likelihood would) be called "Wireless charging sound" in the settings.

Strange, before Pixel, I had a Nexus 6P and it was also a non-wireless charging device, but it made a sound every single time I plugged and unplugged my power source. I was hoping the Pixel would do the same thing - especially since I have enabled that option in settings....

typing this on a 6p, never has it made a noise when plugging it in/out. perhaps you had a third party app that caused it to do so. there is only one stock battery sound on the device, and it is called: WirelessChargingStarted.ogg

Yeah....you could be right...I used ResurrectionRemix ROM on the 6P. Maybe that's why it worked. Oh well....
Lame, why have the option to toggle if it's fort wireless only when the Pixel doesn't have wireless charging, doesn't make sense. Makes more sense it's broken. All my other phones make a tone when charge.
The charging sound option is for wireless charging only in the source code. I could link the commit that custom Roms use to add the sound back for wired also but that would take an effort ha and I'm tired. Think it's been that way since M.

am late to the party, but would like to add that for my Nexus 6 on stock 7.1.1, not only is the charging sound only for wireless and not wired charging, it is also only when the phone is on and unlocked - if screen is off/locked when I put it on the charger, no sound + no notification (but does charge; I rely on the light notification of my Qi charger)
Pixel XL 1 (2016) OS 10 update - no notifications, apps or charging
I had to clear caches in each app, and sometimes reinstall, to get notifications back. Some still do not work properly.
Charging sounds had to be turned back on in Settings \Sounds\Advanced.

Android 10 update seems to set all notifications and sounds to off except phone and text. Really poor debugging folks.
Also worried about the reports of the motherboards burning out on the Pixel 1s because of much more intense CPU usage.
Thinking the good thoughts.
I was able to fix this issue by using adb(read carefully) and typing the command .\ adb shell settings put global charging_started_sound /system/media/audio/ui/ChargingStarted.ogg. This command works because the same sound is used for wireless charging and normal charging. these sounds broke on android 10 because the system sounds that were located in /product/media/audio moved to /system/media/audio, but on some older pixel phones, the update did not change the file destination in which to look for said sounds. this command manually points android to the correct file. Hope this fixes it for you guys.

By the way, on a pixel, there is not a system sound for charging stopped, as far as i know. But if you hear otherwise, let me know

I'm using the AT&T Galaxy SIII Pebble Blue 16 GB.
I searched high and low for a thread about this issue but I haven't seen one. Hopefully someone will embarrass me and bring one to light!
Maybe its just the make of my car (08 Saab 9-3 but the head unit is pretty standard across a few GM products), but getting car audio (Using Aux in) to work in this car is very flaky and unreliable. If I plug both ends in directly and try to play the "Earphones connected" message never pops up. The moment i remove the cable from the head unit the ear phones connected pops up. Plug it back in to the car, it goes away and still no audio.
The work around is very annoying. I have the unplug it from the car and press play on Spotify, then plug it in hoping that it will work. It does sometimes... but after I get it plugged in if I receive a text or phone call it will immediately cut out the audio from the car and replace it with a periodic crackling sound. My old iPhone, iPod touch, and Galaxy SII do not have this problem. My friends brand new Galaxy SIII is having the exact same issue.
If ANYONE knows of this issue any help you can provide will be much appreciated.

vs
yours=first, mine=second (and my display looks exactly like yours)
But, mine does do one thing that really bothers me... as soon as I plug in the aux cable it automatically starts playing stuff (I think it's whatever the last thing I was playing). I'm not sure if this just happens in my car or in other places too. I just plugged in some headphones at my desk and it didn't do anything so I'm thinking it's the car. I'd ask if you have experienced this too, but it sounds like your problem would supersede mine.
(It also doesn't stop playing when I unplug the cable, which is really annoying, but that one I know is a TouchWiz thing. The problem I explained above I can't tell yet whether it's a TouchWiz "feature" or some sort of weird bug)
You'd be right..
I can "trick" it to work... which involves plugging the jack into the phone pressing play on Spotify then plugging it into the aux in on my car and it will work. Any stop in music playing (Like the end of a playlist) will disconnect it and any text or anything of that nature will too..
Its so annoying...
I have an '07 9-3 and have the same exact issue.Streaming music in my car is one of the main uses of my phone and the fact I cannot is a huge annoyance.
My thought on a way to "fix" this problem was to create a widget (perhaps using something like AnyCut) that switched the phone into earphones mode. The change into earphone mode is obviously normally done by a physical action (plugging something into the jack) but I was hoping there might be a manual way to do it. However my knowledge on the matter is very limited. My phone is rooted and I was searching databases using SQLite Editor for a variable to change to put it in earphones mode but was unable to find one. Does anyone know if this is even a viable way to do it and if so how to implement such an action?
Cheers,
Celtic Browncoat
I also have an 08 saab 9-3 and am having the same problem. It figures that the problem would only exist with a saab
Not sure if everyone has come up with a solution, but in my 2007 9-5, I found that grabbing an inline volume control from Radioshack fixed the issue. I plugged it in on the phone side and everything works as it did with my old Droid X.

Hey! I stumbled across this old post a few days ago, as I was looking for a solution to the exact same issue with my 2010 9-3/Samsung Galaxy S4. The inline volume control cable ($10 from RadioShack) fixed the issue for me as well. Thanks!
Just got the 5X today and the power cord clicks in real nice, but it's really hard to pull out. I mean like it's a struggle to remove it.

Same here. I was afraid I was gonna damage my phone. I had the issue with the old N5 although it wasn't as bad.

Yeah, I was a little hesitant when I first plugged it in. Needed more force than I was comfortable with and unplugging it too
It only seems bad when removing the cable, I need to grab myself a USB A to C cable now to root
I'm a little bummed that I can't pull the cable out with one hand anymore, but it's a welcome departure from my experience with a lot of aging microUSB cables where they fall out on their own.

Same here. When I insert the cable it feels okay, though theres a 'bump'. But it gets really stucked when i tried to pull it out. For one moment i thought theres a release button or sth.

My phone seems to have this "issue" too. It offers up a lot of resistance when plugging in and unplugging the cable. I have also noticed the same thing with the headphone port. Other than that I am pretty happy so far. I have only had it for a day and a half though. I read some bad reports on battery life but it seems pretty good to me so far. I usually notice an increase after a few charge cycles ( after a week or so) so if it gets even better I will be pretty pleased with it. I also saw some videos showing really slow boot times and app launching etc. but I have found my experience to be MUCH quicker in every regard. I am assuming the testing they carried out was on a beta or earlier build of M. I cant link to the video on here but you can find if you search for Nexus 5x and 6p speed test. Also the site with the reports of bad battery life was the review on digital trends.
What has your experience been of battery life and general speed/ responsiveness of the UI?

Battery seems like an improvement over the N5 but too early to tell by how much, responsiveness is good though I've noticed some occasional issues with scrolling. Any performance regression compared to the N5 could probably be related to the forced (non-hardware accelerated) encryption.
My USB goes in nicely but is tough to pull out.
Mines would go in, but I couldn't do it anymore so I had to pull out.
Isn't a tight fit desirable? :good:
Yeah, its a bit scary how hard I have to pull to get it out.
With both the OEM charger and the USB A to C cable being sold from the Google Store.
I think the "tight" fit has more to do with the design of USB Type-C and not really an issue with your phones.
I haven't personally used the USB connection on a 5X. However, my employer recently gave me an iPhone 6S, which has USB Type-C as well (Don't worry, I still use my Nexus 6 for personal use. ). With the iPhone, I immediately noticed that the connection to the phone was very tight and requires extra force to get in and out of the phone. You get used to it after a little while and after a few weeks of use I can say that I definitely prefer the new connection over the old older connection on my Nexus 6 and Nexus 7.
So, my suggestion is to not over think this as an issue. It's just a tighter fit, plain and simple. You'll get used to it.
You lucky people... my Nexus 5X does not exist yet, but my 9... It's so loose...

I just wanted to post a short topic letting other users know that there may be a charging issue with WW-5.17.44.68. A couple of days after updating to the most recent firmware I suddenly began having charging issues with my Zenfone 3 Deluxe special edition. Shortly after hooking up the factory charger I would receive this error message accompanied by the same alert sound that Amber Alerts use. The only way I was able to get the phone to charge at all was to roll back to my pre WW-5.17.44.68 nandroid. Trying different chargers with different cables made zero difference. The error is dead on as pulling out the USB cord you can clearly feel it is quite hot. Ignoring or missing this error will most likely guarantee a fried charge port (minimal)! Immediately after installing my backup all issues went away. I am currently charging with the factory charger and cable now without heat/error.

That's rough. I haven't bothered with the update because it's too much of a hassle right now to go to stock recovery and update. I think your best bet would be to stay on your backed up firmware and wait out the Oreo update (which should be soon as well.)
Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully it isn't a widespread issue.

After feeling how hot the USB port/plug got I am in no hurry to try it again! I could even smell the charge board heating up. That is quite a gut-wrenching smell when it comes to a phone costing as much as this one. I too hope that it isn't a widespread issue.
I completed a full wipe before installing the firmware and tried multiple USB cords and chargers after. The only thing that fixed the issue was downgrading. That leaves the firmware as the main suspect which is why I decided to post my findings.
If anyone is considering updating PLEASE have a recent nandroid FIRST.
Thanks for the warning, indeed they did add battery improvement to the changelog....
I did update to the newest firmware and I am charging using Zenfone 2 chargers, I just checked it out and it doesn't seem too hot.... maybe it applies only to QuickCharge chargers....
though I do have an issue that when my phone is locked (aka screen is turned off, phone is running... sleep mode) I have some screen flickering... the whole screen flashes white for just one second before turning off again... kinda annoying as it also wastes a lot of battery

If I recall correctly the Zenfone 2 charger supports the same range of voltages. 5-9-12 volts with varying amperage.
Your screen issues could quite possibly be caused by a rogue app. I've noticed using the "Always On" feature my phone will flash white from time to time. Not the entire screen mind you, just the clock being shown with full brightness for one cycle. If you have TWRP installed it would be worth a backup/wipe to see if it is indeed software. Good luck with your issue
Good news time for everyone except me! After charging the phone twice the error message has shown its ugly face once again. So it seems that my phone is actually to blame :'-( I've cleaned the USB-C port with some contact cleaner sprayed onto a small piece of folded paper. So far it seems to have done the trick. USB-C is great for ease of use but not so great for keeping debris out.
I have found the actual cause of my issues. It's an unusual one so I thought I should share. It turns out that an old florescent table lamp I recently started using again basically turned itself into an EMP device. All of the electromagnetic interference feeding back through the surge protector has caused both my phone charger and my 6 bay 18650 (vaporizer) battery charger to malfunction. After unplugging the lamp the overheating issue has stopped. The phone charger no longer quick charges but I'll take that over a dead phone any day! The issue with my 6 bay charger, if you were curious is that I have to power cycle it each time i want to establish a bluetooth connection now. Its crazy some of the curveballs life can throw your way!

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone else had this same problem. I updated to pie last Monday and noticed my pixel 2xl wasn't charging on it's oem charger.
I plugged my phone into 2 aftermarket chargers and both will charge my phone, although I noticed that sometimes when I plug it in, my phone immediately shuts off and I have to turn it back on.
I called Google tech support and they sent me a new charger figuring that my original charger was bad.
I got the new charger today from Google, plugged my phone in and nothing.
I can still charge from my 2 aftermarket chargers though.
I don't know if this is just a coincidence with the update or if the update did something to my phone.
I'd hate to have to factory reset and go through all the trouble of backing it up and everything, so I'm just looking to see if anyone else has experienced this and if there might be something I can do.
I have pixel XL and have found the same thing. Just updated to pie last night I have 4 Google sourced rapid chargers that no longer work. I broke out an old charger for Nexus 5x that works fine. Not pleased that all my rapid chargers are now useless. My wife has pixel XL that hasn't received pie update yet, will be in a pickle if that happens to her phone too. Unbelievable that this got pushed out with this problem.
I believe fast charging is broken with the Pie update for OG Pixel phones like yours but it's news to me for Pixel 2 phones. It's certainly not broken for mine. I did 5-80% in 1 hour.

Yeah, just to be clear, it's not just that rapid charging isn't working, it's that the phone can no longer use the Pixel XL Charging bricks that came with the phone. Phone will not charge AT ALL at any speed using a fast charging brick supplied with the phone. Google told me to factory reset phone and reinstall Pie. Haven't had time to try it yet but will report back when I do. Until then, trickle chargers work still.
Same problem for me with original charger not working. I also had the issue where the phone switched off as soon as it was plugged in to charge on back up charging cable. That can be resolved by booting into safe mode and then restarting it. At least it worked for me.
Yea fast charging works with my Verizon type c charger and my type c car charger. Both aftermarket.
Google brick does nothing to my phone.
I'm facing the same issue. Did u guys get a fix?
Ho, but what's the best way to charge or pixel 2 xl? Original charger with power delivery or an old charger with slow charge?

Assuming you have positively ruled out the cable, I would be right back on the phone with Google using your ticket number from the charger, wanting to escalate to an RMA. When you plug the phone into your computer do you get the interface to change to data transfer? Can you transfer data to and from the PC via ADB? You may have a hardware issue with your USB-C port and it will likely not get any better.
I have a question regarding charging.
My p6p is 80% and connected to the original charger. It showed "adaptive charging (I think) stating that the device will be fully charged by 7:15 am (interesting, it's my alarm then). I unplugged it and plugged it in again, now it shows fully charged in 58 minutes. I'm confused. Can anyone explain it please? Am I doing something wrong, like not plugging properly? I do not want to leave my phone to charge overnight because I'm simply too lazy and the socket is way too far from my bad. I would rather have it charged fully before I would go to bed. And does the alarm time matters here or it's just a coincidence?
Alarm matters, as does the adaptive charging setting in the battery settings page
Turn off Adaptive Charging (Settings > Battery > Adaptive preferences).
Adaptive charging reduces battery wear by charging your battery slower & reaching 100% charge just before your alarm goes off, but if your turn this off (or disable your alarm), it will charge normally.

The adaptive charging is bogus, by the way. I tried it out many times, and if I for example go to bed at 22:00 and set the timer to wake up at 0700, the phone will already be at 100% if I look at it at 0300. And yes, adaptive charging is present. Never worked properly & as advertised for me. Only good on paper.

It's very adaptive. It knew you were going to be looking at the phone at 0300!
Glad I saw this thread, I couldn’t understand why my phone was taking forever to charge literally 8hrs. Had this darn adaptive charging on.

Adaptive charging is designed to only run at night, and it looks at your timers that you have set to wake up (at least in theory).
For you it also ran when using it "during the day"?
That sounds like more of a bug than a feature.

There is another thread with a couple of others having Whatsapp restoring issue, they might have sorted it.
I would toggle the adaptive settings and see if you still get the same behaviour

Do you have - by chance - the new Whatsapp Beta enabled that gives you access to your stuff on 4 devices without needing your phone?
I also think the estimated time to 100% is wrong. I will test it by setting a timer tonight. But it will 1hr to 100 but it didn't feel like a hr
Nope. Totally wrong. Said 1hr 25min to full, but actually took 59 min..

You charge via cable or wireless charging pad?
Sometimes you need to move the phone a bit on a charging pad until it starts charging (aligning it to speak). Maybe you made a mistake there (if you use that)?
Regarding the 4 devices - Whatsapp offers you that if you want to add a PC via QR Code (if you are enrolled in the Beta).

At this point I'd say either try factory reset or ask Google to send you a replacement device, if you have deactivated adaptive charging, it should charge with no problems at night. Of course it could be the cable/charger at fault, but considering that you have used it on other devices (I guess?) that shouldn't be the/only problem (is that a Huawei Charger that supports PD? (Power delivery). And does the cable support PD?
