I'm coming from a nexus 6p, planning to move to a 5x due to the size of 6p. My main concern is the battery life and Ram. Does the phone run out of ram? My nexus 6p averages at 1.9gb. Please post your experience.
Unfortunately yes. Battery life for me is about 30 min less than 6p. Nexus 6p for my usage seems not to run out of RAM, where on the 5x every 5th or 6th App has to reload.
The good point is, as long as you can life with these tradeofs, you can enjoy the better handling of the 5x

Does it hiccup or stutter due to insufficient ram? I've heard that Snapchat lags on nexus 5x due to low ram. I don't mind if it didn't keep more than 3 or 4 apps in memory. All i am worried about is thw stutter.

You're welcome Bro!
Make sure to get a reatively fresh build Nexus 5x. These seem to have a way better Screen, at least for me.
My first 5X had a lot more stutter and lag than my current replacement. 3-4 apps does sound about right. Maybe 5-6 if they're lighter apps. But after that you will get refreshing, just not stuttering.

I have one of the 2012 Nexus 7s that turned INCREDIBLY sluggish after about 6 months. It is to the point where I don't even use it anymore, my wife uses it to read and I've gone back to my iPad 2 (ugh).
I've read that the problem with the OG Nexus 7 was the flash memory that Asus used, it degraded quickly or caused bottlenecks, or wasn't trimmed properly, etc.
Can someone that is really familiar with this (not just guessing) tell me if the hardware on the Nexus 7 (2013) is built to prevent this? I really want the new N7 because it was the only Android tablet I've bought (also bought XOOM and Transformer) that could replace the iPad 2 for me.
I'm no memory genius, but I did some searching around, followed some blogs and it seems the problem was the actual speed of the memory.
and after seeing comparrison benchmarks, the internal memory on the 2nd Generation was about 2X as fast as the 1st gen. so, while it seems they put in nicer memory, We'll have to wait and find out.
FWIW, i never had a problem with my OG N7, neither did my wife with Her's. both were day 1 purchases.
edit: Source: http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...-just-how-much-faster-is-it-a-lot-apparently/
The main problem with the old N7 even the TF700 (both Tegra 3 devices) was the single channel memory, as well the lousy NAND that was put in the devices which really caused it to lag.
The NAND is by far sub-par on the device and that a MicroSD card can typically help increase the performance by placing all the data on it is pretty bad as MicroSD cards in itself are pretty slow as well even for the best ones.
i got the new one. i feel as tho there is still some slight lag in certain programs. even though it has 2gigs of ram, i would have thought it would be flawless and smooth. maybe it's beccause i just turned it on and started using it. but i can tell you that the chrome browser is way faster on 4.3 than 4.2.2.
also the sound is loud and clear! screen resolution is unbelievable. but with 2gigs of ram, i expected it to be much smoother.

i just got the new one and it was a bit sluggish until i took the latest OTA. now i'm on JSS15J build it is running really really smooth. love it so far.
Did you run fstrim ("Lagfix.apk") on your original N7?
For what it's worth, Android Police has benchmarked it and said that it's working reasonably well - better than the original. If this is your concern, though, I would wait for Anandtech to review it. They were extremely concerned about flash performance last time around, and I think they'll cover it in their review this time around.
And yes, the JSS15J build does make a hug difference in fluidity. Definitely worth getting it.
I just ran AndroBench not sure how it compared to other current tablets.

I have been running fstrim on mine, but it still lags horribly. It worked fine for the first few months. I should have known what the quality is like when I had to return my first one because of screen separation issues, then had the same problems with the second one and just kept it.
I am definitely waiting on the anandtech review, because I trust their attention to detail.
I have two "old" N7s. None has any lag !!!!!
Maybe due to constant wipes/flashes ? I kinda leave my daughter's N7 (~14months old) alone and it doesn't have lag that I can notice.
Anyway, Windows lags overtime too. That's why I do an image backup of a fresh installation. Once in awhile, I restore the image to
get a fresh Windows. It helps a lot.

Good news! http://www.anandtech.com/show/7176/nexus-7-2013-mini-review/4 seems to suggest that not only is the eMMC faster out of the box on the N7-2013 (which I've anecdotally observed), but that they've included fstrim in Android 4.3 for the N7-2012. That suggests that at you should at least see more consistent performance over a longer period of time than the N7-2012 on the new one, and that your N7-2012 should speed itself up a little bit...
So promising, definitely, but I'm guessing if you really wanna know before buying, you'd have to give it a good 4-6 months of someone using it before getting the definitive word on it.

I totally agree it's faster. Just loaded up my tablet... 435 Meg free. Nice and quick still. No issues. Delete the items using the space up and very quick still. Benchmarked nearly identical.
Performance has been top notch. Games are quick, large ones at that, switching between apps have been quick.

i noticed immediately how much faster the new n7 is compared to my old one. its like night & day.
I think the real problem with the old Nexus 7 is Android 4.2.
Like many others who remained on or switched back to 4.1, I can tell my device runs as snappy as ever.
Sure, the memory may not be the best / fastest, but these annoying lag problems people report of are most probably simply due to 4.2 or other misconfigurations. People just don't wanna acknowledge it because they think: "Back to 4.1? Never!" or such.

Why not custom ROMs...?
My nexus 7 2013 is having a strange problem since a couple of days. It becomes slow and laggy by itself sometimes. I mean the frame rates while browsing through the home screens drop down to 12 - 13 frames per second. I can't seem to figure out what is triggering this slowness. On restarting the device everything becomes normal though. But after a days usage it again becomes slow..
Any one else facing the same issue? So do I need to keep switching off the device once in a while to get a satisfactory performance out if it?

I know it's been some time since the 5X came out and I'm thinking of ordering one. Has Google addressed the lag issues that plagued the phone when it first came out? How would you rate smoothness and performance?
I bought one a few days ago , it doesn't lag at all and in term of performance it's really good! It's fluid.
got mine in early december. stock, rooted, adaway, deactivated transition animations (literally all the changes i made). no lag issues so far, app switching is smooth and launching an app is subjectivly as quick as to be expected. from my experience and what i've read it can easily keep up with the SGS6.
If you're stock, then yes.
If you're modding and have custom kernel, then potentially no.
Lag on 5x? Can't say I experienced that.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Experience the lag quite often now. Especially if I don't reboot it for an extended period of time. Most aggravated by camera use. If I never use the camera, it takes a significantly longer period of time before it starts to lag. If I'm traveling and using the camera constantly, I need to reboot by end of day to get the phone functional again.
Honestly any bit of "lag" issues you may have heard about is nitpicking...the overall experience is very fluid and fast.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
I've had my device for a couple days and haven't had any lag issues what so ever on completely stock unrooted and have used the device a good bit. It makes me think that whatever was an issue when the phone was first released was a hardware issue that has since been resolved behind closed doors.

I have two, one is mine and one is my wife's. I bought them both on release and hers has been quite the headache. It's already been replaced once for issues with unreasonable amounts of lag compared to mine. Mine has been mostly fine, with the same pain points like Camera/Chrome as her but not as bad. I'm not quite as demanding of the phone as she is. I recently wiped mine and went to an AOSP rom with the ElementalX kernel and haven't experienced any of the same lag doing the same exact same tasks. I may wipe hers first and try the same set up before exchanging it again. I'm leaning heavily towards Google just did not optimize the stock kernel for the 808 chip at all. I really feel like they booted up the first build and went "OK it works, let's ship it" without doing any real testing and optimizing like other manufacturers seem to have done (LG G4, Moto X Pure, basically any other 808 phone).
My phone has never had lag. Smooth as butter.

It's there for some and that's probably not going to change. Here's one popular android blog (Android Central) that recently wrote a "3 months w/ the 5X" article. Multiple editors provided their thoughts.
It is hit or miss for me. This is my first Nexus so I don't notice lag often but it is there even though I am decrypted and running a custom rom/kernel. My experience has been mostly positive, I love using the 5X. If I were coming from a previous Nexus, I probably would notice the difference in performance right away however my last device was a dual core S3.

Nope, stock device here (no root) with zero lag. Snappy performance and the camera is always quick. I only reboot about once per month for the monthly security OTA.
Besides, most CPU governors are tweaked to increase battery life by decreasing clock speeds. Not to increase performance.

I got mine on release day and my device does not lag. The majority of devices do not we're just 10x more likely to hear from those with issues then those without. There has been no hardware revision or change in the 5x, just software updates.

My last device was the Nexus 5. The 5x is just as snappy and the graphics performance is far ahead. My device is stock and not rooted BTW. Based on user experiences I've been reading, those with issues are in the minority and experiencing 3rd party software issues. Many have reported success by doing a factory reset without restoring data from another device.
BTW that article is a joke IMO. The only person who mentions how often their performance issues occur mentioned "about once per week" and the rest don't even say.
Obviously some people are having problems with device performance, but I don't believe it's inherent to the device as most are not experiencing such issues and problems only seem to arise once certain types or amounts of background services are running.
My theory: 2GB of RAM on 64 bit OS fills up quicker than 2gb running 32bit. Users are overloading their RAM with background services (possibly aided by a memory leak ala Android 5). It's no secret that many 3rd party background services have really bad memory management.
Yes lag is there. Fresh reset camera everything runs great. Give it a few days (3-4 for me) and you can stop using your camera. Pictures will take 5 seconds to process. I'm not exaggerating. No software fix in sight, and not a peep from Google about this being an issue or a fix in the works. Feel pretty jipped being a pre-order customer.

I run custom everything and I prefer it. OOTB, left some things to be desired even though my overall Nexus experience has been great. I agree, we'll always here complaints over positive experiences.
Your theory on ram makes sense from a general level of understanding. For me, ram management on here is awful. A few apps, Maps for instance, reload all too quickly.

I can also second this, I'm looking for custom ROM that will make phone usable again. At this point, I resent returning the N6.

Short answer, yes it lags and pretty bad. I have to power cycle daily to make it usable. I also thought most reviewers were making unrealistic expectations and we're nitpicking but apparently they weren't
Yes, especially with thermal throttling such as when using navigation, taking videos, or multiple photos in succession.
Mine is horrible. Lag when opening the camera, lag when browsing chrome. My phone is encrypted and I have android wear. Honestly the only thing good about this phone versues my nexus 5 is the fingerprint scanner and the front facing speaker and way better battery life. Other than that I am not liking this phone at all.
I've not been on XDA for quite some time but came on today looming for answers to lag on my 5x.
Totally stock, gets above average use I'd guess, and it starts to lag several times a week.
I I stalled an app called Fast Reboot which seems to help without having to go through the pain of a full power off - but after a couple of weeks that makes little difference now.
Full reboot restores speed, but using the camera a coue of times instantly returns the lag - can take 30 sec+ for camera app to take a photo or close. However the lag starts after a day or two even if I don't use camera at all.
Maybe try a replacement from Google seeing as it seems hit and miss rather than a clear manufacturing/ ROM issue across them all.
Hey guys
I have bought a Nexus 5x but recently I have noticed it lags like hell and it gets hot around of camera
Is it because of encryption?
Last year I had Nexus 5 and it was very smooth but Nexus 5X is really laggy and it's not like a nexus
How can I solve this issue?

Usual Android tips would apply in that case. Most likely related to apps you have running as 24/7 background services, check your Developer Options > Running Services to monitor those.
This device is smooth and snappy. Even when its maximum throttled point (hot) it's faster than a Moto G (cold) which is no slouch itself when it comes to unskinned Android.
LAG
I have an unrooted device and randomly I will get really bad lag. I feel it a lot more when I am using the camera app and trying to switch from one app to another. The solution that works for me is clearing out the cache.
I boot the phone into bootloader, I get a random error (forget what it says), then hold the up volume then and power at the same time for about 3 seconds. Then let go of the volume button. It will take you to a different screen where you can choose clear cache.
Hopefully this helps.
Same problem here. Mine even lags when composing a text as the characters get more and more. Very frustrating.

I have the same lag issue, the overall RAM usage is around 1,6 of the 1,8 GB which last not much space for caching apps or something else.
Clean up the cache is not the solution for that problem.
I'm very frustrated with this issue because I use multitasking and therefore the 2 GB RAM seems to be not enough. Right?
My wife has a oneplus x and it feels snappy, and this is more consistent, the Nexus slows down from time to time.
