Hey i was wondering about the unlimited photos back up with google photos. Does this mean only photos taken with the camera on my pixel can be backed up, or does this include all photos on my pixel including ones downloaded from Facebook and apps like ifunny?

It's hard to say, you currently get unlimited storage for photos below a certain resolution that the 6P camera meets being 12.3mp but all my screenshots etc. are backed up on the unlimited plan too.

I called Google to ask this very question along with some other questions.
1. The unlimited drive storage is only for photos taken with the pixel phone.... not photos uploaded from another source. So this is like a promo that is tied to the phone....not the Google account. So once you get rid of the pixel phone the unlimited storage ends unless Google offers another promo with their 2017 device.
2. The unlimited high quality storage is for pixel and Nexus phones and is for photos that have a resolution of 16 megapixels or less .....not megabytes !
However they just started offering this feature so I'm not sure if photos already upkoaded prior to promotion will be grandfathered in and not count against storage.

That's what it is for ALL users already. I assume Pixel users get full quality, not just 16MP.

Yes pixel users get full/original quality photo storage....but again...it's only photos taken with the phone...and the phone can only yield 12.3 MP photos anyway so the only way you capitalize is storing 4k video. This is my take on the situation.
Anyone know if the unlimited backup of photos also apply to photos taken with a 3rd party app? What if that app saved the image as a RAW file?

I've uploaded picture both taken with another device and photo downloaded to drive and none of them counted against my Drive maximum.

Yes it works with third party apps and also saves the raw format versions.
I copied a ton of photos from my DSLR on my pixel via USB from my PC. I then uploaded the to. Google photos via my phone. These have all. Uploaded at full quality and have not affected my storage space.
Anything you upload from pixel will be in full. Quality and won't count towards your storage limit.

Few things to note....first when I called Google they explained that the way it works is the photos software checks the metadata stored within the photo to see what device the photo was taken with. This way you don't have a the "loophole" of moving photos to the pixel first then uploading from the pixel to try and fool the software. Secondly photos not taken and/or uploaded with the pixel will retain the original quality if the resolution is 16MP or less anyway.....even if your using the reduced high quality storage option.
Next... the photos quota that shows how much storage you have left only measures in increments of 100MB...so if you uploading photos or bunch of photos less than that size....you won't see the meter move.
Lastly....the storage quota meter takes time to adjust. You may have to give it a day or two to catch up to what your uploading.

I think the biggest lesson in the mobile device world is to take the word of a CSR with a very large grain of salt. I read numerous accounts of the "loophole" on reddit. I loaded an hour long show on to my phone then synced the folder to my Photos. The show was roughly 400mb and did not register. This was a little over a week a go so take it for what its worth.
Wouldnt be the first CSR that was wrong, lets not forget all the preorders that never shipped and the CSRs said everything was fine until the delivery date passed and devices were not in hand. They are human, and thus prone to make mistakes.
My storage reading though I will put a little more faith in, unless you have some definitive proof otherwise..?
This is just one of the threads where it is discussed by more than a few users, check it out if you want.

You are correct...the csr People usually know nothing....but he admitted not knowing and took my questions to the tech people who did know.....and that's still may be false info too....but it also made sense for Google to do that....that way.
Also I don't think the unlimited full res storage is for life....I think it may be for a year or two. If it were for life and the loophole works....that alone would be reason enough to buy the pixel.

I couldn't imagine it will be for life (I wish) and even how it seems to work now might be a glitch they end up fixing one day.
I added this link to my reply from before in case you wanted to see accounts of it working with other media loaded on the phone.

I read the Reddit thread....it appears the loophole works. However I think people are not understanding what the definition of high quality is..... according to google the high quality threshold is 16MP.....not MB....it's the resolution...not the size. And most and almost no phone macerator have that type of resolution...and even the DSLR have to be on max settings g to produce that resolution.... anything 16mp or less I believe will be uploaded uncompressed. That's my understanding.

Really, most of the phones I've had over the past few years have all been 20+MP(only 2 Google phones weren't).
I don't get the high quality threshold of 16MP, MP isn't directly related to image quality. Even though those 20MP sensors were made by Sony they're not even close to the image quality of my 8yr old 16MP DSLR.
Anyway more on topic, it doesn't surprise me that unlimited storage for pixel photos/videos allowing files it shouldn't with how fragmented and how little each Google department seem to communicate with each other. Since storage cost money, I'd think they'd likely try and correct this soon but Google doesn't always do what makes sense.

The threshold isn't because it equates to some arbitrary level of quality. The assumption is if the photo is above 16mp, their system will not back it up because it is above what the pixel is capable of an thus not taken on a pixel and not subject to the unlimited storage stipulation.
Then again, the camera is 12.3 mp
Panoramas can make you exceed 16mp but the stock one sucks. I had to download a different camera app to take a decent one.

I was thinking the same thing.
I personally didn't really care about the free space. While it's nice to have it, I have real cameras and mostly only use phone for those times that best camera is the one you have with you. Plus the 1TB Flickr gives me is plenty for photo sharing especially since I down size everything I publicly share to 1024 on the long side.

It was when I started using it a few years or so ago. I'm not sure if they ever stopped. While it was already popular for photographers before that it really made it popular after the 1TB free. I think was yahoo's goal to be the biggest photo hosting, it definitely drew in a lot of serious photographers but not so much of the phone only ones
I like it because of the large amount of storage and ease to share on forums

Since the .15/.17 updates, we have seen a modest improvement in camera quality, furthermore, the RAW mode has shown that the sensor and lens combination can take some decent shots, even in low light
(look here) http://www.anandtech.com/show/9211/a-quick-look-at-one-m9-raw-photos
Now, yes, we could all just shoot in raw and learn how to correct the profiles, but, simply put, we shouldn't have to.
It is evident that HTC's jpgs are not being processed well, resulting in poor images.
I've tweeted HTC to ask if there are further improvements coming, and I didn't get a real response. Does anyone in the know have details as to whether they have committed to continue working on their JPGs, or will this have to go to one of the hardworking devs here to do something about?
Personally i've found HTC jpeg shots look better than RAW, and even in the photo's you've linked it's better in JPEG to be fair.
The S6 and iphone don't impress me either.
All the shots are awful, so I wouldn't use any of them as low light or night time shooters.
I wouldn't expect too much more in the way of improvements and if this phone's camera isn't good enough for you, i'd give up and sell it because they're all much of a muchness and no substitute for an Ultrapixel or proper camera.
Would love to see ANY update. When is it coming to europe and Sweden? Hate waiting....
I don't know what to tell you, then. The S6 and the iPhone are pretty much the gold standard for camera phones right now, and to call them awful is pure hyperbole. You might be a pro photographer and prefer a DSLR or pro gear, but even a pro photographer would be able to know what the intended use were for camera phones and not resort to calling them "awful" when they're clearly quite good for what they are.
The HTC camera, however, is simply horrendous. For simple point & shoot operation, this is damn near unusable indoors, and much worse than my Nexus 5, which is generally regarded to have a pretty bad camera. HTC **** the bed on their processing, and need to put some engineers towards improving this before it hurts them even more. Fortunately, this CAN be done over an OTA, but somehow I doubt it will.

There isn't any perfect phone out there, but easy there I think the HTC M9 camera is great if you know how to tweak the exposure, contrast, and saturation. Maybe you should have a look on how to fox it

As I said, for POINT & SHOOT operation, this phone is absolutely awful. Like 99% of the population, I do not want, nor should I need, to tweak any settings to make the phone usable as a camera. Should manually adjusting the camera take BETTER pictures than point and shoot? Sure. But using the camera right out of the box should take semi decent pictures, not the blurry, pixelated mess that HTC's software produces. Saying "Oh, it'll work fine as soon as you adjust the contrast, exposure, saturation, etc etc etc" is NOT something that will work for the general public.
So don't call a camera phone awful, but it is ok to call one horrendous. Lol. My wife has the Note 4 and before that she had the Note 2. We have had other Samsung phones in the past. Her phone does take a slight better pics than mine, but let's not exaggerate it. For those spur of the moment memories, texts, and social media, my phone does just fine. I have found iPhones do produce really nice photos, but my understanding has been that Apple does a little extra with the processing and the end result is not a natural photo.

I've had the S6, it's quite adept at taking pictures. It's not DSLR quality, but as far as camera phones go, it's at the top for sure. Meanwhile, every single point & shoot picture out of the M9 comes out a pixelated mess.
I never said don't call a camera phone awful. I said you simply cannot take the gold standard out there and say it takes awful pictures. It's simply inaccurate. Meanwhile, for point & shoot, the M9 certainly is a poor performer.

Like I said. I did comparisons and I don't see where it is that bad. I don't know how much better a S6 camera is than a Note 4, but I doubt it is that great. But I guess it could be.

I think a fair few of us in this thread agree that the M9 's hardware is CAPABLE of making some good shots, comparable to other flagships on the market. However, to GET to that point, it requires Manual intervention (or RAW). This is ok for 80% of the time, but when you have a short time to take a shot, it certainly falls short of other options.
This thread isn't to argue the semantics, rather asking what everything thinks is the next step for our camera, whether anyone in the know can share whether HTC will continue working on making the AUTO + JPGs better, or whether the notion that they will work on the camera was just a tick box action, and now we've had a small update, it is up to the independent devs to improve.

Sorry mate, no idea, but I do feel your pain.
If you're really eager, any one of the leading custom ROMs have the latest camera update? I'm personally running Leedroid at the moment, and I cant fault it. Stable, with great performance
I am in the market for a new phone and I'm looking for advice. The 4 top things important to me in order:
Fully lockable boat loader and ability to root and load custom roms
Very good camera especially in low light (stills and video)
Dev community
Storage to hold videos both recorded and downloaded
The Pixel XL 128 hits all of these but it's a little out of the budget. (~$600 max) I'm seeing Pixel XL 32s in like new condition going for about $600 locally but I am concerned about the storage space. How much actual space are you left with available after apps and files are loaded? How much does the unlimited cloud storage for pictures actually help in the real world? If I don't go the Pixel XL 32 route my second choice is the Oneplus 3t 128 but I hear the camera is not near as good.
Any feedback on these from Pixel or Oneplus 3t owners would be greatly appreciated. TIA
I'm using 32gb version (I had to) and yes I have the same concerns about storage, but my concerns are mostly because of mass storage not photos or videos storage. Google photos already giving unlimited storage but without a decent internet connection it is not very healthy.
I have few big games and programs, also I'm keeping my media on my device and still have 15gb of storage left.
And don't worry even if you fill your storage, phone does not get slow, besides sone 128gb versions have freezing problems because of memory, God forbid.
BTW when you have a complete clean phone you would have>24gb storage or a bit less.

That's a good price.
After reading this I might just wait a few weeks and see what the Oneplus 5 looks like.
http://www.androidauthority.com/dual-camera-oneplus-5-prototype-772550/
I don't think the dev community for the Pixel phone is particularly vibrant compared with other phones or the earlier Nexus models. It seems like Google made the Pixels difficult for devs to work with and owners to flash on to encourage people to stay on pure Android.

I wouldn't bother with one plus. Mainly because of there bad support and shocking warranty
With that budget I think you can try a preown one. And OnePlus 5 would be a good choice as well.
I am using google pixel XL from last one week but already got bored with it. I bought Pixel after using many phones i.e Galaxy S7 edge, Redmi note 3 Pro, Nexus 5X, Lg G5 etc
I agree camera of Pixel is probably best but still very much comparable to previous Nexus 5X/6p. Galaxy s7 edge was faster to focus and was better in low light and for moving object whereas Pixel offer sharp and best still photography. I got bored because i miss certain features for example there is no real water proofing, no sd card, no miracast when much cheaper redmi note 3 can be connected to TV without any WIFI etc. Google want us to invest in chromecast that cannot even connect to mobile without WifI . samsung also offered sidesync which was great to connect mobile with laptop to watch media and use all application on PC.
I am confuse whether to stick with Pixel Xl or resell it. I will lose probably another 50 quid if decide to sell it. I got it cheaper for £308 by selling s7 edge for £270 but now i regret because i think google is charging way too much just for camera and software and is not actually all rounder to compete with features offer by others brand . How many of you are actually content with this phone ?
I had the explosive note, the new iPhone 7+ when it came out and the S7 Edge . The Google Pixel Camera is far the best and on top of that, the Pixel has not crashed once on me yet. The Samsung devices are bloated and laggy after a week yet my pixel stands in perfect condition and I had the worst experience with the iPhone got it replaced twice in 3 weeks and had crashes with bad battery life. I was worried about storage too and I got the 128 GB but all the photos I take get backed up and I still have 80GB+ left. Sure it's not water proof but how often do you swim with your phone? IF you need to take your phone in a dive you should get a water proof pouch anyways or it might just slip away. I have dropped it in water, in fact I took it on a jetski and water got in the pouch but the phone was fine. For the TV compatibility that really depends on you, I have wifi at home so I have no issues.
To sum it up you won't get the silky smooth performance like the pixel on another phone, the correct colors (Samsung saturation crap) and unlimited photo/vid storage. One of the key points was google photos for me since I take photos on a DSLR too and just transfer and upload.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I understand your smooth software experience with pixel . I actually never felt any lag with previous devices .. may be because i am not into gaming/heavy tasks and also rooted s7 edge and removed bloatware . I think touchwiz is getting better ..I was quiet happy with s7 edge except still photography as day lights photos was overexposed and that was the reason of purchasing Pixel . I thought it will support basic stuff like screen mirroring .. they have cast button but i guess it only support chromecast . Is there any way to connect mobile with Chromecast without Wifi. I mean i have unlimited internet on my phone and 30 gb can be used as hotspot? or if rooting and installing any custom ROm will support mira casting?
Secondly Is not google unlimited photo and videos only valid if you taken them with Pixel? Is not google free high quality already enough for 12 MP still photography? I honestly dont understand the hype about camera of Pixel when its exactly the same as those of nexus 5x/6P. I dont see the reason why someone who own 6p should upgrade to very expensive pixel XL. look at these same photo comparison which i have taken from old nexus 5x and pixel XL

I don't play games on my phone and i notice a lot of hiccups. They may seem small but can be very annoying when apps crash and your phone gets hot over stupid tiny things, there's also the s**t Samsung multitasking, i don't know if they've improved it but when I had it if you ran 3 apps and tried to switch back to the first one you it would restart it to conserve RAM. The software was horribly optimized and I have heard S8 followed it in the steps. I do enjoy Googles fast updates, I hated waiting months for carriers to give android updates. Aside from that I honestly don't know anything about Mira cast and I've never had issues with casting I've used my laptop to stream to my TV and I like having my phone strain free. Do you not have WiFi at home? Or do you feel limited to the apps for chrome cast? Every video streaming app that I have except Amazon Video has cast. You can use your laptop to stream personal videos on to it too and your phone. I don't know if you need an internet connection for that but you do need a WiFi setup. Also I'm so satisfied with my Pixel it's not even rooted so I wouldn't know any ROMs.

Those photos are very different I want you to look at the shadows, the cracks, the blur shown on smaller sharper objects. You'll notice a lot more depth or dynamic range. I'm not a professional photographer but an average person should notice it. I believe the photos compared are S7 and 6P? You have to realize the price difference between those 2 is quite a lot. Look up more Pixel and S7/S8 photo comparisons and you'll see the differences. One thing you should try out on the pixel is capturing video, try something drastic like a bumpy ride and record 4K and see the magical software do its thing. Lastly, all photos/videos uploaded from your Google Pixel are uploaded at original resolution and that's why I record everything in 4K and the USB adapter that came in box is awesome to transfer files and upload them from an external device.
These are some of the things I've noticed and you don't need to upgrade really, the 6P is quite quick still and if you want a cheaper phone with crazy performance try the One Plus. They're some of the craziest quickest phones ever.
Depends on how much you bought yours for, for me, I paid 67000 INR for it, and no, no phone is worth that money, not even Pixel. But being a Samsung user for the better part of my android life I am never gonna buy anything other than Stock android, so Pixel it is. Best camera, best software, what more do you need in a phone? **** all those gimmicky Samsung looks (though Pixel's bezels are huge and should be shrunken on next version) when paired with garbage software. Android still is not iOS in terms of optimisation, and bloated garbage laggy crappy skinned iterations just make it even worse.
Am I happy with mine? Yes. Completely? No. Why? Because my Pixel always had this random freezing issue (and I am on my fourth XL, all of them had it), and I absolutely hate that. With that issue being completely gone this is the best android phone I have ever used, even with the issue is.
If you plan to resell it then do it now when Pixel 2 is still more than two months away, otherwise stick with it for another year. What other phone is there which I might recommend instead? Nothing! Like I said, best camera, best software, I don't think there could be a more important combo to factor in, but Pixel's price should be around 500-600 USD or something. In any case over my dead body I am ever gonna go back to them Samsungs, or try some LG or something.
Good value for money note so sure, a great phone yes

Pixel tend to make pictures more warm, especially those snow shot. This is however not correct, the snow doesn't look that yellowish. The redmi is too cold, so it's not correct either.
Thes eye shot is a selfie, cropped for anonymity.
I received my pixel 2 xl and how can I say, I've never been so disappointed by a new phone ever (from the blue shift to speaker rattling at medium volume and pictures quality)
The worst part is the pictures it take, they look less good than my Redmi note 5 that i paid 150$.
My redmi is using a custom Gcam, the contrast and everything look similar to the pixel but there's much less noise and things look sharper (I'm not even talking about selfie in low light, the difference are staggering)
Anyway my question is, I know there's some custom Gcam on the pixel too. Do we need to be rooted to install them?? Do they make the pictures look better than stock Gcam. How is the noise control? Does everything work on those custom Gcam? I read about Cstark Gcam, but what about the other?
Thank you

Your Xiaomi's camera, even if with gcam, is not even comparable to Pixel's.
If it's like you say, your device must be faulty, ask for a refund/replacement.

So the front camera and back camera are faulty?
The photos i take are similar to what we can see in pixel 2 sample i found on the web, but that's still noisy and grainy compared to what custom Gcam can make even in a cheap Chinese phone.
I don't think it's faulty, just normal Gcam that was tuned for speed to the detriment of quality. I'm even starting too think they Google intentionally cripple the picture quality of pixel 2 to not compete with future Gen.
Anyway, anyone have experience with custom Gcam on the pixel? I'm in the edge about returning it...
hahahaha wtf?! Redmi Note 5 better than the Pixel 2 at taking pictures??? Really?!
You do realize you're talking about one of the best smartphone cameras in the market, right? Just read any decent review or photo shoot comparison.
Either the entire world is wrong or you are. Hmmm I wonder which one is true.

I'm not talking stock camera, it's incredibly bad you're right, I'm talking customised Gcam.
Yes the pictures are currently better than the pixel. I spent my whole day yesterday comparing it and the only place where pixel is better is at guessing color temperature. However this can be fixed in 5 seconds in snapseed.
Anyway, nobody can answer my question. I will need to reopen the box and try to install custom cam... However i can't unlock the bootloader or root or I won't be able to return the phone.
I should probably try to post it in another section, people here don't seem to know how Gcam work.

Why are you surprised?
Gcam on pixel phone stack only about 10 pictures when doing it's HDR+ where custom one on any phone can stack 32 pictures! The result is less noise, that's how Gcam work and that's why i get less noise on the redmi. The downside of it is it's much slower, it take about 5-10 seconds to process the picture, sometime more in low light, but the result is totally worth it.
I'm quite sure a custom Gcam on the pixel will be better and faster (especially if it can use the dedicated Gcam processor) than what i can get on the Xiaomi. Stacking 32 pictures with the pixel core should not take longer than 2 seconds! I'll investigate.

Since you're saying, it must be true. Why don't you go ahead and post some of those pictures so we can compare them as well (with metadata, of course)? I wanna see those horrible photos and compare them with the magnificent ones you're taking with the Redmi Note 5.
There's not one single photo I've taken with my Pixel 2 XL during this entire year that's as bad as you described. Not ONE. So, please, stop trolling around.

They are both the same. Like i said pixel is better at temperature guessing though (even though i think it make things a bit warmer).
The only difference is noise. That's why i want a custom Gcam to stack more picture thus reducing noise. I don't care if it take 5 seconds to process the image. Anyway I'll try at home.
I'll post my experiment later!
Just a suggestion for the OP: if you just ramble on about a Redmi being better than the Pixel 2 XL at taking shots with both cameras, you'll only be laughed at in this forum and anywhere on the internet.
If you want to start a reasonable and hopefully productive discussion, just upload some comparative shots taken by you

I've unpacked the return box of my phone and configuring it as we speak.
I got this Pixel for 160$US during a black Friday promo in Canada. If I'm thinking about returning it, is because something is really wrong.
Hooray.
I've downloaded custom Gcam. No need to root!
The result look very promising.
Already much less noise and much sharper compared to stock Gcam! I might keep the phone after all!
As the saying goes, "Pics or it didn't happen"

Whatever, yes stock cam is not the best.
And yes, custom Gcam improve the performance.
Anyway, I decided to keep the pixel finally.
I fixed the rattling sound by pushing the speaker grill and I'm getting used to the blue shift.
I'll try to give sample photos tomorrow of pixel vs Redmi. The difference will surprise many in here! I'm still hesitating about which one is better... People think pixel are great at pictures because of hardware but really, it's all about the software and the AI algorithm.

I don't think it's another thread/forum you're looking to for answers. I am a semi professional photographer, in the sense that it is my side job and took classes for it. The past 2 years I have tested a good 10+ phone cameras ranging from Mate10pro, 1+, G7/G6, Ipxs, etc. I ended up with the pixel because of it's amazing photo quality. Anyway, all you have to do is post comparison pictures, without them your statement is worthless.
" My Samsung J3 takes better pictures then a Nikon D7500 can somebody explain this. I won't provide pics to prove it just take my word. Ok I'll provide pics, tomorrow. "
Why was this phone advertised with a 50MP camera but you only get a 12MP shot. Highly disappointing.
*Update* User @Ghisy added an "n" to Complaints in the title. This letter fixed the misspelling and corrected everyone's problem with my not on purpose...problem.

You are right about pixel binning however they don't lock it down by hardware like Google meaning no one is ever going to get a 50MB image from this, as MKHD said they shouldn't have called it a 50MB camera when its locked at 12

This. This is what almost drove me to another phone. Yea I know Samsung and apple are also around the same terribly slow charging speed, but when you have numerous other brands charging 60 - 80w and soon a whooping 150w device coming from OnePlus, 23w is absolutely pathetic. They really couldn't have done better?

Besides a binned 12MP is ample and looks better than 12MP

For the price point? Probably not. I mean, I got my P6P for 800. The equivalent Samsung phone at the time (with the same storage capacity since they no longer support MicroSD expansion) was 1500!!! Nearly double the price! But, I already had that Samsung device, sold it for around 800 and was then able to get the P6P without having to spend any additional money =D.
So, although this Pixel series has more bugs than any of the previous Pixel series' that I have dealt with, its still got a better software interface and has full customization via the unlockable bootloader - all things that are beneficial to nerds like me =P.
