Wow... If this 'is' legit, every Note 7, old and new replacement is vulnerable regardless.
but, what ammount of presure is needed?
you cant get more than sea level pressure in normal circumstances, a little more at 1.5 m deep, so, how is that pressure causes this?
So no putting your phone in your back pockets!

Not just the note 7 really, it any phone. Like the kid with the iphone 6s sitting his heavy ass on it where it exploded. Air planes got pressure so any phone can explode...

Huh? Even with pressurized cabins, the air pressure inside airplanes is much less than on the ground. Airliners keep their cabin pressure equivalent to the pressure at about 7000' above ground.
I don't fly much so i can't put more input except plane got pressure... but add that with quality battery and any other possible issue. One thing my not do anything but add each issue in... boom?
Science tid bit - Damn near everything explodes when subjected to pressure.. lol we all are screwed..
If you apply direct pressure crushing anodes and cathodes together or puncture any LITHIUM category battery from any phone, device, or anything else, it will burst into flames.
This wasn't very scientific testing. This is WELL known.
If you view their actual testing procedures, they removed the back cover and did it directly on the battery. They did not show the same test with the back on the device.
FYI< the pressure referring is not atmospheric. They applied direct pressure through a hardened rod.
Bloomberg stated a month ago that the Note 7 battery was "squeezed" into the Note 7 body. This is very disturbing as it suggests a real design flaw. Oh dear Samsung.
Whats the conclusion, are the replacment note 7's an safer than the originals?

ANY lithium BATTERY UNDER PRESSURE and specially, from a localized rod, or bar of little diameter, will fail ALLWAYS, the test was made to show how the batts fail, not to show that this particular batt fails under pressure all batteries in the market abroad will fail in a test designed to make them fail!!!! please, think, observe, use your eyes and brains!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#1 - I think my Defy battery is getting much better. Yesterday, it was off the charger for 19 hours and I was down to 15%. I had almost 3 hours in voice calls, 20 minutes in GPS and almost 2 hours of display time. Does this seem inline with what others have gotten?
#2 - How does the water seal for the earpiece/speakerphone/mic work? Just curious.
#3 - For loose port covers, what about a tiny amount of Vaseline around the edges of the port? That works well for things like gaskets, fridge seals, etc. Alternatively, I was thinking something like liquid rubber to make it a tighter fit. Feedback?

#1 - Ok
#2 - It is submersible to 3 feet. That is a known fact, is published and many on this forum and review sites have tested it under water and it works fine
#3 - Doesn't really answer the question at all???
I have submerged my phone many times and the seals work fine. On mine.
NEVER use Vaseline on your seals as it is a petroleum product and will degrade the rubber. "Stem" grease or O-ring grease, designed for rubber, is what you want.
Yeah, my battery seemed to get better over time and is one of the best on the market IMHO.
A new Defy is waterresistant.
But now that I've opened and closed the covers many many many times I doubt that it still keeps the water out. The space between the body and the bottom of the back cover gets a tiny little bit bigger everytime you open and close it, and the cover for the USB port is not resistant to wear and tear either. In the beginning it was hard to open, now it's hard to close.

Motorola have very specifically only ever advertised the Defy as 'resistant'.

And I really would dare to take it further than into the shower or into an cup of water. This also becomes clear if you look at how it is engineered to become "water resistant", especially at the backcover.

The term "proof" (water-proof, scratch-proof, etc.) has been phased out of nearly all products for 10+ years due to obvious liability reasons. Even watches are no longer classified as "waterproof" because that would imply water couldn't ever get in, period. They are now listed as "water resistant to X meters". Same here...

But nowhere do Motorola state that the Defy is 'resistant' to a set depth either - so to say that it's a known fact is untrue.
What we know is that some Defys will work at that depth but there will be some people who try it and ruin their phones.

It has been on every major tech blog. Motorola even told people at CES/CTIA that it was 3 feet submersible. Moreover, EVERY tech blog who has tested it submerged never had a problem.
On youtube, lots of people tested Defy taking video under water. I've tested it as well around 1 - 2 feet. Not sure how long it can last underwater.
If worry about damaging the phone, best not to try it out. Prevention is better can cure. But good to know Defy is water resistance, no need to worry when water get spill on the phone.
Motorola suggests that you can go swimming with your Defy, but always do so in terms which are full of weasel words and not legally binding. If you try and your phone drowns Moto will hide behind the small print, which doesn't say anything about being water resitant to any depth.
Don't bet your phone on tech blog tests. They all waterboarded new phones. Do you know of any tech blog that dipped a Defy underwater after opening and closing the port covers a few hundred times?
New Defy: take it for a swim.
Defy after three months: better keep it dry.
Here's what Motorola has to say about it:
Motorola said:
Your phone is not designed to float, or work under water.
Water resistance should not be confused with the device being waterproof. If the liquid detect label (located on back of the phone under the battery) is tripped red, the device will be treated as liquid damaged.

Samsung has had a terrible launch for its S-Note line. I've had my Note 3 for over a week and still no sign of official accessories anywhere whether in-store or at Amazon.

I can confirm it does wake the tablet. I don't have the smart cover, but I do have a keyboard with a "smart cover"that turns it on and off. Placing it over the screen, or even on the back, trips the magnetometer, putting the tablet to sleep. Removing it wakes it up into a quick note/dashboard type of program.
I bought a sleeve that is actually for an iPad and daynote does work. It's not working every time but every now and again I'm presented with a special screen after removing the note from its sleeve.
Best Buy tells me it will be in stock this week. Either with their Monday shipment or Thursday shipment.
We'll see. Given that their Samsung Experience employees didn't even know it was releasing the week before it did, I don't put much stock into what they say.

Before you try any magnet cases, test if the digitizer survives it. i had one on my note 8.0 and it had a big impact on the wacom digitizer, when drawing i would get close to 10mm of offset or the area around the magnet didn't work at all. When i noticed this i immediately performed a little surgery and now the case is a dumb piece of leather. Luckily i noticed it pretty quickly so i got no permanent damage. I'm not sure if permanent damage CAN be done with such a weak magnet, but look out

Wow seriously? This kind of scares me as I am using the Moko case. But you know I don't think the Note 8.0 was made to be utilized with a magnet. Seeing that the Note 10.1 2014 is made to wake up with the use of a magnet, I think they made have designed it to be magnet friendly.
I could eb wrong, because I returned my Note 8.0
Yes, you might be right but look out. You dont want a tablet thats at a higher price because of something that breaks because of you not using a correct case.

Heh! Yeah you're right!
Here's what I was thinking when I said that.
The magnet can be on either side. So not necessarily on the cover. "Could" be steel on the cover, but probably not.
Like for instance, I am putting a hall sensor on a Motorcycle presently. The magnet is in the sensor itself. The trigger wheel is steel.
So steel goes through the field and causes the trigger.
But it seems that the magnet here "should" be on the cover. Otherwise all steel would trigger the sensor and screw with the display.
I did run a magnet near my screen and couldn't get it to switch even after fooling with the S-View settings.
Just got my note 7 in the mail. Looks amazing. However I do see the light around the sides hitting the metal bezel and on the top right there's a bit more of a gap and I'm actually able to squeeze the screen closer to the bezel and close the gap. Is this normal? I can fit paper in between quite a bit too
Why won't this XDA app let me upload pics! Keeps saying network error.
The gap is a manufacturing intention according to the user manual, page 228. I guess it depends on your expectation and willingness to take the Note as it is. Mine is sealed on the replacement, I feel that Samsung made mention of the gap in the user manual to cover manufacturing tolerances this time around.
I think this because the S7 Edge and S6 Edge+ had wide ranging display fitments between identical models, in my experience.
Can you slide a piece of paper inside?
With the rush to get replacement units out, I expect the defect rate will be higher than usual. You should do an exchange, otherwise you'll have crap under that screen eventually.
Sent from my SM-N930T using Tapatalk
I dont think that gap is normal, I'm looking at my device right now and I can tell you there shouldnt be a gap large enough for paper to get through, or that will be some low level IP68 rating...
God I'm pissed. Why can't I upload pics on here? Yes I can fit paper through all around. Only top right spot can I push the screen and close the gap a bit. I called Verizon and they won't ship me out a new one unless I pay $215 again. Upgrade crap. I can't afford another $215 our of my account and wait 10 days for a refund!
Ya that's BS. If that were to happen to me I'd walk into my retailer and demand a new unit especially when it's still under warranty. To me it would clearly be an imperfect device and when I'm paying that much money for it I expect the best it can be.

Yeah i can slide paper inside but it stops a few mm in and doesn't extend so I can see it under the screen or anything. Only the top right can I push the screen down and close the gap more. Here is the original thread on the topic:

Idk what to do at this point. I bet most of them have somewhat of a gap. Maybe I should just keep it.
Have a read of that thread, it's perfectly normal on some units and doesn't affect the device. If you're worried, give it a bath and take action in these early days. Enjoy your phone, it's stunning and I'm sure it's water resistant still.
Okay. Im feeling better about it after reading that thread.... the neo hybrid case I order will cover up the leaks anyway...
So I shouldnt worry that one spot of the gap(top right) I can pinch and see the gap decrease a bit? I cant do this to any other spot.
Just upload to an image host site and post a link...

So the gist of it is this. He sharpened his hardness picks, and particles from from the sharpening tool got embedded into the picks. So all if his picks were hardness 8. So every single pick scratched Note 7, hardness 3-8.
When he got brand new picks, only 6 and up were able to scratch Note 7. Which is in line with other Gorilla Glasses.
So Gorilla Glass is not garbage.
How could this happen?
It was believed by those who chose to believe it. He did apologize and correct his error for what that was worth. We move on.
well, he apologized after the damage was done, apology or no apology, the result was the same, he was the first to damage the note 7 image

You made me laugh. Well done! Gosh, this phone is gonna be so HOT in a few months.
I was ready to believe Gorilla Glass 5 is prone to scratches because Samsung did boast that it's shatter proof, or shatter resistant. That was the drawback.
I think Jerry and Corning discussed about it after his tests and that's how he came to realise that his picks were contaminated from sharpening.
But he took responsibility for it. Unfortunately, by the time he released the second correction video, we were all in the midst of the first recall/exchange programme. And very soon after that, Samsung discontinued the Note 7.
The quality of the Gorilla Glass 5, along with other high class features of the Note 7 was no longer relevant now.

Such people tend to be overrepresented on this forum, however, giving the false impression that the report was widely believed.

When you turn a phone on or off it heats up quickly as well as when you charge it or play video games in a well light place such as an airport and your screen happens to be a little brighter. Or all those 3 in a deadly combination for that matter.
Now, I'm sure its easy for You who probably does not own a Note 7 to come and critize a crazy comment. But you have no idea what the owners of the Note 7 have gone through in order to return, exchange or hold on to their devices

Uh, you "heard" it from whom? Did you happen to "hear" any evidence that it was true? And by the way, even if it was, that would be a perfectly reasonable way to use the phone. The instructions never suggest otherwise, and the phone itself could easily have been designed to prevent that usage, but was not because there should be no reason to.

Uh, I owned and exchanged both an original Note 7 and a replacement Note 7. You seem to have a habit of just making things up and saying them without knowing or caring whether they're true.
the whole point of the throttling and disabling of charging and CPU when under the types of condition of playing games while charging (quite a few phones will stop charging) should be in place and should be capable of taking that type of use as it is well known this is a common way people use the phone, if the phone failed because of someone using it in a quite common way the phone is still at fault not the user who would assume that the phone had the same capability as any other device.

Agreed. I've been very defensive about the whole Note7 saga, but my beef is that people who have bought the phone in good faith should be able to decide for themselves whether the slightly elevated risk of using it (compared to other phones) is a risk they PERSONALLY wish to accept. It's not for Samsung or anyone else to decide for them.
But I have never argued that there is nothing wrong with the Note7 design or manufacturing. Clearly there is, and you would not expect a properly designed and manufactured phones to be overheating in the circumstances described above.
On the GG, if you ever see one person defying the industry and standing on a soap box screaming something that flies in the face of reason, alone, without scientific proof in the future......ignore him. Zack is good but he is not THAT good.
This happened after two failed attempts to fix my Fold 3 at the Official Samsung Service Plaza in Cologne! They said, probably the glue "just didn't stick right" the first time around and pressed it again. But a day later the bulge/swelling returned!
I don't believe anymore that it had anything to do with the glue in the first place. To me, it seems like the technician didn't know what he does or was in a rush and failed to assemble it properly. Either something like the Mainboard or Charging Pad isn't seated right in place and it's pushing against the back, or the Battery is swelling.
Samsung is expecting me to visit them, the 3rd time now! But my trust in this SCP is completely gone!
My Fold 3 arrived defective. I didn't return it in order to not loose my Trade-in, Pre-Order bonuses amongst other factors. I trusted my Brand New, nearly 2000€ investment in the hands of these People and they manage to mess up twice.
Samsung refuses to exchange it. What should I do? Did someone else had a similar situation and can maybe offer some advice?
Not sure what I'm looking at here, other than lots of scratching and scraping and moving the phone around on a piece of styrofoam or something.
visit your local consumer advocate, make a better video and tweet it @ some Samsung Europe higher ups. basically get all profile and legal armament you can so that you can to PR shame them into action.
if not that then go around the people telling you no, find their boss and then find his / her boss.
tell them you're thinking of sharing your experience with Linus Tech Tips and MKBHD on YouTube.
poop rolls down hill, so you should go higher up.
@pieces of cake I added screenshots.
@3mel thanks for the advice. I will have to contact my local consumer advocate because the other options sadly only work if you have many followers. I hope it get's some attraction here on xda.

sign up to twitter and tweet a short (better) video at tech bloggers, journalists and influencers, it's their followers and reach you're trying to co-opt. Louis Rossman would be a good place to start.
battery bloated
Maybe you're watching too much pr0n on the big screen....giving the internals a b0n3r!

If you pre-ordered, doesn't it come with 1 year if Samsung care plus? Are they saying you have to keep sending it in for repairs?
@dreamtheater39 pr0n like in Flip 3 unboxings? no all jokes aside sadly I wasn't able to use my Fold 3 yet. It's been in my drawer since I got it.
@pieces of cake thanks for the kind words.
@gordec I do have 1 year Care+ Protection that's right. But Why should I use it in this case? Care+ ist for things that are my fault like smashing the F3 on the ground breaking it's screen. And they also want a flat fee of 150€. In my case it's should be covered under warranty.

Yeah. I agree Samsung needs to fix this. I wasn't sure if Care plus applies to your situation. You don't have a Samsung store near by do you?
As you are from germany, they need to replace it or give the money back after second attempt of repairing.

My local Samsung Service Plaza in Cologne Germany did this my Fold 3. The technician probably had no experience and didn't assemble it correctly.

I've always thought it takes 3 attempts for me to be able request such thing. But you are the second person now who said after 2 attempts!
I've wrote Samsung now and waiting for a reply. I just want a fair start with a new device which isn't defective by arrival.
I've seen this on many Moto phones. Cheap batteries or overheating such as leaving them on the dashboard of your car in the sun. The battery will swell up.

I have the same thing on my fold3. Just only bulging on the hinge side. It was like that on delivery.
The shop couldn't see what I really meant, but said I could send it in for repair. I didn't wanna leave my phone for 2 week though, so I just live with it, but it's annoying on such an expensive device.
Did you get it fixed?
Just gluing the back when the battery is swelled is a temporary fix.
I would imagine a swollen battery also takes quite a hit in battery life.

I've heard of phones swelling before but really have never seen it!
Bulging swelling is usually a battery issue I had it happen to me with my Pixel C Tab. Maybe if you haven't already try there online chat support you might have better luck with them starting a return process
Yup. Mine is like that as well. Switched for a new unit and its the same. What a shame. If i press it down. It stays down for a while. But after that it "lifts" again. And the worse part is that i was using iPhone for the past year because im afraid of this happening on a Samsung(iPhones uses screws to hold the back while Samsung uses Glue). Surprise...
Im from Indonesia by the way. OP is from Germany. So i guess this isnt a region related issue.
