Need Help WiFi Tethering Vpn Connection on OnePlus 3 - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

I want to first of all apologise if the subject I wish to ask for help on violates any part of XDA's rules and regulations, as it isn't my intention to do so.
I want to ask for help on how I could tether a vpn connection on OnePlus 3 over the phone's mobile hotspot. I'm running Freedom OS 1.5 firmware version, and l've tried using some apps from play store like TetherVPN, TetherNet, ISWAT Tether Unlocker and PdaNet+, but none of them worked.
When I use the above mentioned apps, the connecting device keeps trying to obtain an ip address without success. Also I have tried running some routing scripts on terminal emulator, which I came across from forum searches, but that also was ineffective.
I would really appreciate it if someone could assist me with this. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure I've done this in the past without using an app. Settings > More...
Setup connection to your vpn and connect. Setup hotspot and turn on.

The vpn connection I wish to tether isn't that of the native vpn client which is built in, it's that of a vpn app e.g. openvpn connect.

HTTP Injector can only tether vpn connection created by the app itself, not that of other apps. Besides it's used for modifying http requests, which I'm not familiar with.

I haven't found a stable, completely working solution yet.

This has worked for me on MM, but is failing miserably on N. There's a few other similar apps but none of those work either for N.

Pandora outside US

I have the apk, still doesn't work. Is there anyway I can make the app think this phone is in the states?
btw if it matters I'm Canadian.
Use a VPN. Maybe Market enabler might work aswell.
I've never used it so I don't know though
That wouldn't work. Pandora itself checks to make sure you are in the right place, so I don't think market enabler would work.
Also, asking someone to thank you is douchey.

A VPN or some other kind of proxy to the United States would be the only way.
I'm in Canada and can confirm you that Pandora will work if you connect via VPN or proxy... Same thing for Netflix, hulu, mog etc

I use a PPTP VPN service from http://www.strongvpn.com when I am out of the US. It's stable and I can stream Pandora for hours but on occasion I need to reset the connection.

I'm also using strong VPN! Yes the connection is real stable, what I did is I bought their router... now when I connect to the strong vpn router I'm virtually in the us, if I use my regular router I'm here in Canada like I suppose too.

Hey big samm,
I didn't buy their router but actually configured their OpenVPN Lite service on my dd-wrt flashed router. I use the PPTP service on my mobile devices. Don't want to sound like an advert but once you sign up for OpenVPN you can get the PPTP service for just $2 per month. PPTP is flawed with insecurities but serves my temporary needs when on the road...

VPN only need at app start
Also, once you open up Pandora and wait for a couple of seconds you can disconnect from VPN - it only checks for country when it first loads and when you use the the thumbs up and down or try to tweak your stations. Skip works however. I have been trying to find a PPTP app (VPNRoot doesn't work for me: MS-CHAP authentication request denied error) that I can automate to connect to VPN prior to Pandora that works on ICS+. Apparently TOR does this, I just don't want something running all the time using up battery.
transport iturfad
Sorry if this is a stupid assumption or question, if you can get the apk file for pandora is it not possible to edit/modify the apk not to send ip information? Rather than having to install another app to block the ip like VPN?

Hotspot not using VPN connection anymore.

I'm using a stock non rooted Tmobile Note 3. Before using PIA VPN app, with the native hotspot all data went over the secure VPN connection. Recently I just noticed that all phone data goes over the vpn, but tethered data does not. When checking the ip address from my tethered tablet it comes up as a t mobile ip address. Phone browser show a completely different ip address.
Just wondering if anyone else has noticedor has this problem as well? Maybe something just got corrupted on my phone?

While tethering now I'm getting the tmobile up sell page. Using a VPN, or agent switcher used to work fine for me in the past, but not anymore. Are there any not root tethering methods, are still available that work? That will by pass the up sell page, or not count against your mobile hotspot?

That is only useful if he is already rooted, not if he is trying to setup for the first time. Not sure what his situation is.

AdAway.......
I had the same issue. I enabled the hotspot on my Nexus 5 and tethered off of it. I added 2 entries to the AdAway app settings to redirect the update URLs to 127.0.0.0. Then to test and verify, I connected my laptop to the hotspot and did an nslookup on the update URLs to verify they didn't resolve before connecting the FireTV to the Hotspot. Worked great!

Can you configure the DNS settings of the hotspot at least? If so I'd suggest pointing it to OpenDNS and blocking from there.

VPN Issue with Always On. Request for other VPN users.

I have an issue with the stock VPN where it goes haywire when I use Always-on. Connecting to it without Always-on is fine.
If anyone out there can try Always-on VPN, do you get a DNS failure on all pages?
My VPN is IPSec, wondering if yours works and, what type of VPN it is.
Thanks!

Mine works fine, I just tested, I connected, set to already on, then I rebooted the phone and as soon as it started it connected automatically to the VPN.
What kind of VPN?

What are you running you VPN server on? I had a similar issue. I also couldn't use my VPN when on 3g/4g had to be on wifi but it worked okay on all my other phones with the same server. I was running my own vpn server on my Unifi security gateway.
My fix was to create a openVPN server. Now always on VPN works perfectly I stay connected 10-12 hours a day no issues

I was running a L2TP server. I bet that's your issue. The OG pixel XL and the Pixel 2 XL were the only 2 devices I have had issues on. Before that with the same server I used my S8 note 8 LG G6 and iPhone 7 all with the same server setup the same way with no issues.
Does pfSense support openVPN? Have you test this with any other devices?

OpenVPN needs its own client and doesn't use the native VPN. I'm trying to stay away from that
My OG Pixel XL is fine with always on and this same VPN

Yes I did. I have several VPN clients. Open VPN (does not work using always on) I also use Windscribe and Unlimited VPN. The always on work with Windscribe, I haven't tried with the Unlimited VPN.

First boot up without connection to google server

I was on android q beta and decided to roll back to stable p version. After reboot I found I had to connect to a Google server to finish the initial setup. The problem is I am working in China at the moment and no way to access Google server. I have been using various vpn to assess blocked contents in China before but that's after passing the initial setup. Any idea? I have googled using my laptop with vpn of course on this and all the hacks need the phone to be able to access google server directly.

Tried that, I am not an expert on that, have tried various ways, can share the wifi but it's just the plain internet without vpn, so still not getting google server. I am still investigating on that.
