When the Note 7 is relaunched in the UK will we be forced to accept 60% max charge - Note 7 Questions & Answers

Hi
I have been waiting for the Note 7 as a replacement for my Note 4. Like most people I am a bit concerned as to the proposed Elastoplast solution offered Samsung. Imagine how many EV cars would be leaving the show rooms if such cars only had a 60% max charge. Is it likely we will be forced to Root our new phones to get around this if set in an official update from Samsung or is anybody thought of another approach?

No, the new phones will charge to 100%.

@pigglet
That is good news. So why all the misinformation about the 60% charge or is that to prevent any insurance claims. You 100 % sure that you not seeing a charge of 100% or 60% charge the appears like 100% if you see what I mean. Lies, damn lies and charge progress icons!

The old ones that have been recalled had a limitation that allowed to be charged up to 60%. The new ones will not have such limitation.

They will be able to identify which are the affected units and release the update specifically for those. We're nearly a decade into smartphones technology. Samsung should know how to narrow it down.

I really doubt that the firmware updates would be configured or even able to detect these units/batch numbers as it would such high risk if there was a bug in the detection. I suspect we will be forced to take a new unit in the UK that has the 60% charge restriction. This leads me back to the original question as what are the options for the enabling the 100% charge, given this the Note 7 is a great phone despite these issues.

New phones will not receive that update. Its only old phones to stop them getting overly hot and causing dodgy batteries to go pop. Its exactly the same as carriers receiving different updates at different times.

Why would they sell a phone for £700 that could only charge to 60%?Thats madness. The new safe units will charge to 100%. In fact the new software update is already showing this.

I wouldn't worry about it. Samsung may have blundered with the battery manufacturing process. But they're not THAT stupid to limit all phone charge to 60%

That would be plain stupid New units will work likely they should and that means 100% chargeable.

The big question is, who has a copy of the firmware update?

Both phones get the update at least for the us version. 2 different carriers both got the update. My tmobile note 7 has not been swapped yet and was able to get it. It will charge to 100. My sister who has swapped hers and on att got the update as well. The battery did change to green.

Did you flash with low battery or let it run down in recovery? Nevertheless your battery is prop out of juice.

Charge the battery, and update de drivers (download from motorola).... No problem flashing SBF with CM9 kernel, but after flash, you need to Wipe cache/partition in Motorola recovery
Sorry, my english is terible

Labsin already provided you a solution in his link to his extensive post. It's time to go Mc Gyver:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892026
Before doing that however, you can try to "kickstart" your Defy by repatingly inserting the Charger (connected to the wall outlet, not to an USB port) and at the same time try to get into bootloader menu. Once there, leave your Defy in BL to charge your battery. I had this once on a similar issue and it worked.

T-Mobile UK repaired it free (even though CM7 was still installed on it).
The Warranty covers hardware, whereas custom roms are software, so usually you can get away with it if they can't boot.
Just an update for anyone who comes across this thread..
I took it into my local T-Mobile shop where I bought it, and they sent it off for repair.
As far as the repair centre knew, it was still under warranty. They couldn't tell it had been rooted.
So I'm happy Phone is already at the shop.. I would've thought they would have called, but oh well Maybe they will tomorrow before I pick it up.
I can finally stop using my Slow-as-hell Huawei U8110 AKA T-Mobile Pulse Mini
Here's what the Repair tracking says.

You can always try buying a Defy battery from the shop where you bought your phone, else online will probably be the only option.. that is unless you have a market with a mobile phone dealer there.
Nothing to worry
Your phone is out of juice just charge the battery by putting it in other phone(defy) or get a charger you can charge directcly you battery...The charger looks like in attachment..i dont its name.. leave the battery to charge for 1 hr...then simple steps. boot loader >RSD will detect>seletct the latest Sbf (GB kernel) not froyo.>flash it>boot it >root it>2nd init>flash the rom you want (GB kernel) Enjoyyyyyy....

Yes, i got an image like this.
If i connect the phone to usb at pc, the led white shows up and, after 10 minutes, if i longpress power button the phone boot up wiht only 5% of charge, but after a minute it shut down by its self.
So, i must buy a charger or a new battery?
P.S. I tried to wipe data/cache from stock recovery, but the phone not charge.

Fingers are crossed that it does not happen to the N7100. Maybe i should not have sold my N7000.
The NAND memory becomes corrupt and the phone bricks itself. I wouldn't doubt it could happen. I'm also hoping it doesn't.
Don't know but it happened to my friend just yesterday.
he has put device on table with working condition before he went to sleep, and device never wokeup
It happened to a friend's s3 and he took it to a fixit shop. They have fixed it for only 15 euros and said that it was a problem in software. Lets hope that the problem isn't the NAND
Here it is hardware and one of victim of sudden death. Service Center said need to replace motherboard, fortunately Its under warranty.

same thing happened to my note 2 last 03 january 2013.
i have just put the device inside my bag in perfect condition and after 1 hour it never opens/start up.
when i push the power button it only shows a flash of red blinking near the proximity/camera and nothing happens.
i tried to charge in wall (overnight) and pc (12 hours) hoping it just drained its battery to no avail.
now, i'm still searching the house for the invoice to return for warranty.
i think i'm one of the unlucky ones.

Well there should be some kind of trigger that causes this.Like in N700,a factory reset on stock ICS was dangerous as it may trigger the eMMC bug leading to super brick. Hope someone finds out what that is before its too late..

Good point, though nigh impossible to trace, seeing how these sudden deaths are either while standby or completely random. But you never know!

Samsung itself should go after it IMO. A few hundred bucks are just too much for bringing the phone to the warranty office because of some "random sudden death". I mean, at this level of brands it's not acceptable. If it was some kind of generic cheap stuff I would say okay, it happens, but it's made of a top manufacturer company?!

After the Exynos bug, i have no faith in Samsung.
ok ok ok, WHAT??? Sudden Death?? I came here looking up Wifi issues on the Note II and decided to take a peak at this thread. I just bought my Note II 12/24/12 (greatly influenced by recent purchase of Note 10.1) and purchased the extra insurance on it too. I love this phone.
I'm for the trigger theory. I think it might be useful to post a little more info about the devices that died.
Nevermind, I just found this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993044&page=208
Something similar happened to my brother's note 2 last weekend. He was working with his phone and then he switched it's screen off.
After that his phone could not came back to life again. We tried for hours to restart or get into recovery but no success. He was so afraid about it.
Fortunately his phone could go into download mode. So we flashed latest samsung firmware with odin and everything was back to normal.
Hello,
yes, no wonder. Cause in my understanding of the problem the Note 2 could be affected to the sudden death syndroms also.
In SGS3 sourcecode 7 update there is a special handling for the mmc ic VTU00M with firmware 0x1f implemented.
This special handling should be the fix against sudden death.
Now some Note2 have the same mmc ic VTU00M with the same firmware 0x1f.
From this point of view, the Note 2 VTU00M mmc firmware 0xf1 should have the same bug like the SGS3 VTU00M mmc firmware 0xf1.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36466221#post36466221
AndreiLux implemented this fix directly to his Note 2 kernel.
The fix from samsung is only applied to the VTU00M ICs with firmware 0xf1 and firmware date 2012/04/13:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36473044#post36473044
However, at the moment we cannot check this firmware date with a tool. And there is also a chance, that all ICs with FW 0xf1 have this FW-date.
And, you have already 4 cases here in the board. Half sudden death (device boots still to download mode, but nothing else and is unflashable) and full sudden death (totally death).

My Note 2 suddenly just... Died

Was staying in a hotel last night and didn't have a charger with me. Battery was about 80% charged but since it was late and I wasn't expecting any calls I went ahead and turned it off.
Got up this morning, hit the power button and.... Nothing. Pulled the battery, popped it back in and.. Nothing. No lights, nothing on the screen, just completely "dead"
Plugged it into the car charger for a few hours, but still got nothing. Saw a friend that has a GN2, tried his battery, but it still won't power on.
I bought the phone on release day (paid full retail), and have had zero problems with it until today. The phone has never been dropped or exposed to moisture in any way.
What I'd like to know is:
A) Has anyone else experienced this? If the phone seems completely "dead" (I.e. no leds, nothing on the screen) Is there anything at all worth trying to get it to power on?
B) The device is rooted running the stock rom and has been since shortly after I bought it. Since it's completely dead I have no way of unrooting it - I've read tons of threads on the whole "warranty void" issue but didn't find many firsthand reports of warranty experiences with Samsung. Am I probably screwed here or do they typically deny warranty service only for people who brick their devices while flashing them?
I already obtained an RMA number from them so I guess I'll find out soon enough but would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks
Have you tried to boot to recovery? A different battery would have been the next step. Hopefully, if you can't turn it on, neither can they.

Can't boot to anything. Tried every button combination imaginable but have yet to see any response at all. It behaves exactly like Note 2 that is unplugged with the battery pulled (i.e. dead)
Tried 2 other batteries, still nothing.
No idea how it could just "die" like this. It worked perfectly until I powered it off last night.
I had a Galaxy S3 that done the same thing. But i caused the issue by flashing a wrong kernel on the phone. Anyway mine was replaced with a new one. So hopefully they will not catch that it was rooted. I don't think they spend a whole lot of time trying to find out why the phone will not boot. Good luck.

Was it replaced by the carrier or replaced by Samsung? The only thing Sprint would do for me is give me Samsung's phone number... Samsung told me that the device I send in will be the same device I get back.

and that is a matter of manager discretion....the policy doesn't really state that from what I recall. Like you said, not really a way to prove it didnt just fail let alone that it was rooted.

While I know Samsung has the right to deny warranty service for issues that arise from modifications to the device (which is completely understandable), I'll be very disappointed if they rely upon that as an excuse not to service my phone. The phone worked perfectly for months rooted w/stock ROM before it decided to no longer turn on.
It should arrive at their Plano, TX facility tomorrow and turnaround is supposed to be ~7 days. I'll update this thread with the outcome in case anyone else runs into this issue.

Wow, I had the same exact experience yesterday night .. with baout 15% battery left.. it just died.. nothing brought it up .. Finally pulled the battery and putting it back somehow brought it back to life.. wonder what was the issue.. I am really wary with these super expensive phones .. and rooting and modifying them with absolutely no support form the manufacturing.

and that is a matter of manager discretion....the policy doesn't really state that from what I recall. Like you said, not really a way to prove it didnt just fail let alone that it was rooted.
take it to a corporate repair store, if you don't have insurance call in and add it as this month is an open enrollment month....or pay the $50 for in store service so they can order you a replacememt.

I had an issue kinda like this. I tried to install the aosp carbon 1.5 rom last night and once the screen timed out or I put the phone to sleep is wouldnt come back up. No lights or anything. I got lucky though. A battery pull fixed it but I noticed the phone was really hot. It probably just about fried the cpu. I rebooted and it seemed to work again untill i tried to put the phone to sleep. This time the screen didnt even shut off it just locked up. I pulled the battery again and then I was able to wipe and install a TW rom and havent had the issue since.
It got hot really quick on that aosp rom. Is it possible that you were OCed any and burnt it out?

Definitely not OCed - device was basically stock w/root. I don't recall the device rarely ever getting "warm" really, and it definitely never got "hot".
Primary reason I needed root was for a modded app I use for day trading equities that I wanted to run it in multi-window mode alongside another app.
Only other thing worth mentioning is that it had been nagging me about the 4.1.2 OTA update (a lot), which i had been repeatedly ignoring. I know once or twice it tried to install and rebooted into TWRP, and each time I'd just hit reboot and the phone would come right back up. This may have been the first time I actually "powered down / turned off" the device since it had been giving me the update prompts. Not sure if that makes a difference?
Phone will arrive at Samsung tomorrow - should hear something later this week.

I think you may have already shipped the phone so I'm probably too late anyway. Were you able to see the phone in adb from your pc? I've had issues similar to yours (no display) and doing an adb reboot recovery got me into recovery.

For future reference, TEP (Sprint's insurance) does not take effect until you make a call with the line that it was applied to. If your phone is broken, but can still make a call, you can add TEP. If your phone will not make a call, then it won't be enrolled.

lol...Sprint didn't manufacturer it. beyond the posted return policy they are under no obligation to handle Samsungs warranty claims

All that is needed to add TEP is a valid ESN. It's effective the date the rep selects...next billing cycle or same day.
anyway...not trying to argue...just curious why Sprint stores are turning away folks rather than charging the $50 and taking care of it. 3rd party maybe?
op....they typically have repaired then reflashed phones in the past at samsung with no questions asked....you will most likely be fine

UK repair center is not my friend
This is why I love my N4. No BS to get an unbloated phone and if something goes it's easily solved as well.
Update:
I received my phone back from the Samsung repair facility.
They replaced the motherboard and didn't give me any hassles about the device being rooted/modified. Total turnaround time from the day I shipped it was 11 days.
When I received the device it kept failing to activate on Sprint's network. In About device the network was listed as "Samsung" and the serial# was listed as "00000000000". After doing a factory reset it worked and the serial# is no longer displayed in about phone.
Overall I'm grateful to Samsung for taking good care of me under warranty and I'm glad to say I'm as pleased with their service as I am with their products.

Roll back from the 60% latest firmware

Has anybody successfully been able to flash older firmware than today's 60%Green roll out?
I'm unaffected and have the green battery but would really like to know if it's still possible with ODIN, or if Samsung have made it more difficult somehow.
Just tried to flash the original firmware in Odin and it failed ...
I am also interested by a solution !

Out of sheer curiosity, why would anyone not want to return the phone? If you received the update, presumably your phone was on the potentially compromised list. How do you make the determination that it's unaffected?
@tiroger
Every device will eventually be updated, mine is a 2nd batch device (replacement) so it was unaffected (Black square on box), hence the green battery. I agree people should be returning these devices, however, like yourself i'm curious and wondered if a firmware downgrade was still possible after this update.
I am concerned for grey market devices that have been purchased from abroad, Samsung are not replacing these unless back in the native device region, a little unfair IMO.
I denied the update by quickly restarting my phone when the countdown appeared and now im having mysterious battery drain issues =/ but ill exchange my phone this weak anyway

Looks like I have some reading comprehension problem. hehe. I misunderstood your comment. I agree that the green icon is a bit of an eye sore. Hopefully it's temporary and will switch back to white if and when Nougat is released.

I've tried the one before the 60% update for France XEF (6.0.1 N930FXXU1BPH6 N930FOXM1BPH5 ) .
The error appears from the beginning , a red "failed" message. The file is ok since I've flashed it 2 times before.
Cheers~
PS: For the time being I am charging it to 80%(settings-device maintenance-battery-3 dots-advanced settings-uncheck "limit maximum charge to 60% ) thanks to @s_h_a_g_g_y , solution here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-7/help/battery-charging-limited-to-60-t3465566/page5

Yeah, it's an eyesore that could and probably will go away once they get at least 97+ percent of the affected devices back. Maybe with the 7.x update. In any event there were a lot of updates to Grace UX in this and the Sept. security patches. Why on God's green Earth would folks take a white battery icon over the UI updates and security patches? it seems insane to me.
Wait what was this update? I was reading and heard a vibration then phone reset, I thought it was the phone resetting on its own randomly (hadn't happened once yet) then saw it updating. Is there a changelog we can see somewhere? I just see a green battery icon being different. (I'm on a new replacement Note 7).

I imported the note 7 from Singapore into the UK and am receiving assistance
Taken from samsung's Singapore site http://www.samsung.com/sg/note7exchange/
What if I bought it in Singapore but now residing in another country? How can I ship it back and how can you send the units outside of Singapore?
Please contact the Samsung Customer Service Center in your residing country for information on the exchange process in your residing country. We assure you that we will be assisting all Galaxy Note 7 customers in the exchange, regardless of your residing country and the country where you purchased the device.

I noticed initially that Samsung service centre's were playing hard ball on that issue.

I believe the update brings a green battery icon (Showing you're unaffected by the recall) as you noticed and a few behind the scenes changes to the Gracenote UX. Anyone using a recalled device is limited to 60% charge by the same firmware update.

They tried to get me to take it back to the retailer, i said im not going back to singapore anytime soon, i was put on hold a few times sometimes for 5 or 10 minutes and supervisors got involved, but they did agree to exchange it - saying i would get a UK version phone, i said i only want the international variant. the saga continues but yes i will hopefully get the replacement (and the right one)

Not in all markets. Canada does not limit the battery, but has a pop up warning that shows up every 3 hours.

P.S
I still have my old device and new and have not noticed any behind the scene changes. What have you noticed?
Edit: excerpt from an interview with Samsung Canada:
An software update that will change the color of the battery icon on new Note 7 phones from white to green is heading out, automatically installing itself on every phone. Data charges for the update are zeroed out by carriers.
“In the event that you have a device that hasn’t been replaced, the software will detect what battery is in there and prompt you to register for the exchange program,” Brannen said.
While Samsung can flip a “kill switch” to remotely deactivate every old unit or limit the charge of the battery, — a strategy the company has chosen to apply in the US and Korea — the Canadian division has opted instead for a somewhat gentler prod: a notification every three hours urging users to switch up to a new Note 7.
“We have worked very closely with HQ and we determined that’s the wrong message to send,” Brennan said. “The message that we want to send to consumers is: ‘I want you to exchange your devices.’ Allowing you to only charge a device to 60 percent is not going to drive a great consumer experience.”

Cause, they don't exchange it yet. So they want us to go around with a half battery. no way!
@jmitr Thanks for the info. I was reading on one of the recall threads today that a user was aware of some Gracenote UX improvements including security a little thin in detail but information none the less. I'll try and tag the user in once I find the thread.
Could you please post your firmware revision? It would be interesting to see if you're using the same as the US devices, only differentiated by region detection perhaps.

Questions about RMAs and getting a refurbished phone

Hi guys, yeah I had to RMA my Pixel 2 XL for what seems to be a relatively widespread issue judging by all the threads I've found on the official Pixel support board, XDA, Reddit, etc.

So yeah, I hoped for a brand new replacement but it seems they decided to send me a refurbished device that was produced in early November (3 weeks earlier than my previous, faulty phone). I have a few questions:
1) What's the condition of refurbished phones that are usually sent by Google? Can I expect a phone in perfect condition? I'm absolutely not interested in getting a phone that has physical damage considering how pristine my previous phone was (no scuff, no scratch on the body and screen, always protected in a case, etc.) You guys have been lucky with refurbished devices?
2) For the ones who received a refurbished phone, how was the battery wear? I'm asking cause I've seen people abusing and charging their phones from 0% to 100% two and even three times a day (gamers, people with with an addiction, etc.). I take good care of reducing the battery wear on my phones by limiting useless charging cycles, and I'm afraid I could get a refurbished unit that has a battery in bad shape with a premature reduced capacity, not knowing the usage habits of the previous owner... What is Google's position on that matter?
3) I was lucky to get a phone (the one I had to RMA) that had a good display with almost no blueshift, no image retention, no graininess and very uniform brightness, no speaker problem, etc.
Knowing it's a hit-and-miss, were you guys able to refuse and return a refurbished phone that had a bad display, speaker or other "minor" issues? I suspect Google is somehow trying to get rid of its lemons by sending them to users requesting a replacement...
Many thanks
To be honest, I highly doubt its a refurb.
I've RMA'd 2 (or 3?) times and each time I ask if it is a brand new device and all responses were that they only send out new units from the RMA office.
For my first RMA, I had the word "refurbished" in my RMA email and I quickly went on chat to inquire about it and they confirmed its a typo as its a new unit.

Have my second refurb on the way ???
I bought my phone panda 128 GB off Swappa for 570$ and i called google right after to get it transferred to my name. A month after, i requested a RMA and they sent me a refurbished unit which was in a perfect physical conditions it looked like a brand new device. Still have to test the battery life tho. If i paid 950$ for the phone I wouldn't be cool with a refurbished one.

I just RMAd mine yesterday because the power button stopped working correctly. Sometimes it won't work at all to lock the screen, sometimes it does, and sometimes it detects a single press as a double and opens the camera .
Hardware issues are a bummer...

Great to hear (literally)! My speakers sound OK but speakerphone for voice calls still doesn't sound great, how is yours?
I called Google a few days ago and got my device rma'd due to a dead pixel on my screen. I just hope my replacement hasn't got any issues as the rest of the device works well (charges slow but I don't really mind that )
I just got my second RMA. Both have been refurbished. First one started overheating and powering off every time I tried to charge it. The second the phone microphone died suddenly so I could only make speakerphone calls or video calls (different microphone). Both replacements were manufactured november 2017. Since it has a 2 year warranty, I plan to continue to RMA any hardware issues.

To tell you the truth, my Pixel 2 XL is fine... My wife got 6th replacement today... Had to fight with them to get a brand new phone and not refurb.
I am currently on RMA unit #2, with #3 arriving today. I tried RMA due to blue shift when i first got my Pixel 2 XL back in November. Out of the 4 phones, only 1 of them had minimal blue shift, 3 of them had it very severely. EVERY phone has had speaker issues, either right out of the box or it developed them 1 week into owning.

I'm using my first refurb right now, just sent back a second refurb because speakerphone was bad right out of the box. Pretty sure the one I just sent back was a brand new original batch because it was still on September image and had stickers all over it still. Blue shift has been about the same on both refurbs which is too bad since original was better. Hopefully next one will work out.
