If you go into Settings turn off all apps that allow drawing over other apps(note 7 highlights the ones that allow it) then grant any permissions needed for your apps, then go back and check the boxes for your apps skiing to draw over other apps. Then you should be good. With the new permissions system you can't grant permission to anything if you've checked any apps allowing them to draw on other apps.

Heads Up Notifications

Does anyone know how to change what gets displayed as Heads Up in 5.0? I have the settings in Sounds and Notifications > Interruptions setup like this:
When Notifications arrive: Always Interrupt
Events and Reminders is ON
Messages is ON
Calls/Messages from: Anyone
Downtime: NONE
The only apps that seem to do heads up is Facebook/Facebook Messenger. I'd like other apps to be able to show heads up when I'm in a full screen app. Is there any way to do this, or at least have it show the status bar to see the notification icon for a second or two when I'm in the full screen app, to decide if I want to check the other app?
Could this just be an instance of apps needing to update to utilize the heads up feature? It seems likely that Facebook might be one of the first to update, and stay current, and it may just be an instance of other apps needing to catch up.

Thanks, I thought about this right after I posted it. I was just curious if anyone else knew how to get more notifications to behave this way.
I guess I'll just have to wait it out until Lollipop gets more support from developers.

Permission issues with marshmallow

I'm having permission issues with root on marshmallow. Permissions are fine until I root. After root I can not use new apps that need permissions for contacts, storage, or gallery. The apps given permission before root work until I plug in USB storage then it blows out anything needing permission for storage including stock system apps such as gallery and file explorer. It says screen over lay detected turn this off in app settings but turning then off or on doesn't work. Has anyone figured out how to fix?
You need to turn off permission to overlay the screen on apps that overlay the screen, such as Lux, LMT, cf lumen, etc. prior to attempting to changing permissions on contacts, gallery, etc. Then turn the overlay permissions back on
This is a security measure to prevent what I think is called tapjacking where you can be fooled into tapping something you didn't want to.

Agreed. I've also noticed sideload applications won't install if Lux is enabled.
I didn't try the overlay disable but unchecking the enable in Lux did the trick.
If anyone has a functional Sleep List for Lux that works to avoid all these issues, please share. It seemed to work the first time sideloading an app but now it doesn't work anymore. I've had to resort to disabling Lux to sideload.

I'm clueless on how to turn those off. It says overlay detected and does to app defaults but no amount of turning them off or on fixes the problem. You may be right about the tapjacking because it happens when I have changed our added nothing. It has happened since the last time I restored. The only thing I have done different is not ran greenify.

Vibrating pop ups in chrome browser on Pixel XL

So I have had my Pixel XL for just over a week now and for the last few days I have been getting annoying pop ups appear in chrome when browsing sites such as xda, phonearena and techradar.
When the pop up appears in chrome the phone vibrates and it will not let me close the tab. Usually the pop up will claim that I have won the lottery or a free iphone etc.
I have tried, deleting all history, cache, cookies etc from chrome since the beginning of time and I have done the same on my laptop to prevent it syncing back across. I have also tried resetting all network settings but the issue persists.
I get the same issue both on WIFI and on 3/4G.
Has anyone had the same issue? if so how did you fix it? I thought the Pixel was supposed to be a secure phone, i feel like its already riddled with malware!
Thanks in advance!
* I will grab a screen shot of the next pop up and upload it to this thread. *
Update 5th Nov: added Screenshot.
This happens to me from time to time. My best guess is that it's just malicious ads on the sites, and not actually malware on the phone or anything to worry about. Closing the tab has always ended it for me. What happens when you try to close it but can't?

I find it strange that sites like xda and techradar have malicious ads though? also this has only surfaced in the last couple of days? before this is had no issues...
My concern lies mainly in the fact that you can't close the tab. What happens exactly when you try to do that?
when the pop up if present on the screen you cannot press the tab button (top right) to close the tab. The way I get around it is pressing the switch app software button at the bottom and then selecting google chrome. I then get a split second to quickly press the tab button top right on chrome or the ad wont let me press it again. The pop up ad causes the ad to vibrate violently when chrome is open. Its winding me up.

I expect that it's a dialog box preventing you from pressing the tab button. Is this the case? If so, did you try checking "Prevent this page from creating additional dialogs", then dismissing it?
Thanks for your help, I. Was trying to find a way of preventing the pop ups in the first place if anyone has any ideas? Could it be a rogue app on my device, I've only installed a handful of 3rd party apps and most are from large companies, BBC, premier league etc.

Not a rogue app, my freshly restored Pixel does it. I installed an adblocker.

Adguard works really well if you don't want to root.

Thank you, I will give this a go.
So I remember having this issue a few months back. I'm looking for the Google problem that was logged but from what I remember the issue is not device specific but actually based off of your unique google ad profile. These malicious ads are going after those ID's and then that's how you get vibrate ads on reputable sites. I stopped using personalized ads and that fixed the issue for me a few months ago. I will try to find the link to add. It is an issue Google is aware of.
Ad support is fine and XDA has the right to have ads.
Where I draw the line is the Ad described by the OP, I would complain to XDA.
With XDA I support the site by subscribing
I had the same thing happen to me. I determined it was a bad or unofficial .apk for ShowBox. Once I deleted it, the vibrating pop-ups stopped. I ultimately found the proper .apk, installed it and haven't had the issue again.
So I've installed Adguard and I'm a little concerned that my traffic is being routed through their vpn. I don't really trust that.
Also I've added a Screenshot of one of these annoying pop ups that vibrate my phone. FYI I didn't have Adguard running at the time.
I've also gotten these a few times. If I remember correctly I also noticed it on my Note 7.
Vibrating ads have nothing to do with malicious apps, webpages have permission to vibrate natively
Narrow down the problem... process of elimination.
Exactly what sites/pages/tabs do you have open when this is happening? Either your phone has been jacked and needs to be wiped (or maybe Chrome removed/reset) or you are visiting the same page(s)/websites that have been jacked. Believe it or not, this happens to some very reputable sites due to poor security on the part of themselves or an advertising vendor purchasing and displaying ads on the site.

Issue: apps auto open & alarm sounds independently

For about a month I have noticed apps automatically opening on my phone. They bypass the lock screen or interrupt what I am doing, and are most often apps that I NEVER USE!
I have also been experiencing phantom alarms. I have no alarms set, as I am off work for my wedding/summer, and yet my phone around 6am on random days, displays the alarm audio, vibration and screen funtions of a typical alarm. I've gone as far as to delete preset alarms(which were turned off) and the alarm issue is still occuring.
Are these issues related to the last update? Or is there something I can do to fix at least 1 of them?!
Have you tried to use the phone in safe mode, you might have an app or somethin malicious interfering with your phone. If it does not happen in safe mode the you will know its one of your apps. Also are any of your apps not from the playstore.
I have not tried using my phone in safe mode, and all of my apps are from the play store.
I haven't had any apps open independently in a few days, however the alarm has become a daily occurrence.

Check the moto actions settings, nice in theory but I think it's the culprit for a lot of the ghost actions that occur.
The only moto action setting I have enabled is "One button nav", not sure that that would be the culprit. Should I "force stop" that app?

If it's updated, maybe try rolling back the update. If that isn't an option you might try not using one button nav, might not need to stop it. Though if it persist you might try it and observe. I just know that the random app opening and alarms is a common issue across moto phones and some have stated that moto action is the problem. Honestly, it's a moto problem like the random reboots etc. You'll most likely just have to search around for a solution until moto fixes it properly.

Question "At a Glance" no longer showing temperature on the lock screen

Hello,
I've had this issue since launch and I can't figure a way to fix this. Basically, when I first got my phone, the lock screen was displaying the temperature under the time, with a "tap to learn more" button. And after clicking that, it simply vanished from existence, never to be seen again. It does show itself back when there's a Google Calendar event, but the temperature is gone. And after doing a factory reset recently, the temperature is back, with the "tap to learn more" (which I don’t plan to press, now that I know this will make it go away)
Is there a way to fix this? Thanks
That's a lot of overkill
Find the app and clear it's data next time.
There may be a conflict... like with the Google app*. Could be in settings, somewhere, or in notifications. Disable all power management for now... it will cause erratic behavior.
You need to play with it.
* that nasty little permission to change system settings... can be misused.

I get it. But I had to reset my phone anyway.
My problem is that it shows the temperature, but as soon as I press the "tap to learn more" thing, it shows a slide about at a glance and it just goes away.
So I don't think it's a permission issue if it works just fine before clicking on the forsaken text

You need to track down the associated apks first then look them over. It may be a glitch that you can correct or maybe resetting the apk data is the only way to correct it.
Try clearing the system cache.
Try it in Safe mode to rule out 3rd party apps.

The question is, does it even work for you? I understood that it will be fixed eventually but nah.
Also what kind of apk are you talking about? This is literally the lock screen

I don't have that device but troubleshooting is troubleshooting. You need to dig around for the apk but it's most likely there under system apps.
It's possible the firmware flash was corrupted if so a factory reset won't work. More likey it's a glitch.
Hopefully someone here knows the answer but it's not a major issue. I would tend to just ignore it other then to play with it as a curiosity. No doubt you'll find better fish to fry...
