I'm currently running build 14393.5 on my Lumia 640 LTE. Up until this point I've never really had any update issues. Now that there's some RS2 builds out, I tried to update but I can't download the update because my device storage is full. It's not personal files or apps either, it's over 2gb of "Pending updates and preview builds." There's no option to clear this junk out, and trying to update only made it grow larger. Now I've got less than 400mb of space free, and it wants about 1.5gb for the latest update.
Does anyone else have this problem? Searching for answers only turns up one "solution", hard reset. I'm not prepared nor am I willing to hard reset just to clear out old files that should have deleted themselves after not being used. It's a hassle having to sideload all of my tools again for unlocking and customizing. I've thought about trying SFTP browsing for the temporary files, but I'd be willing to bet they can't manually be deleted, IF they can even be found/accessed.
Has anyone been able to clear the pending updates without doing a hard reset?

Maybe you missed my point.. I KNOW I have low storage space. It's not my own apps and files, it's temporary update files. I'm asking if anyone has ever been able to clear them without hard resetting.
I have the same problem. I don't found any way to solved this :/ any idea?
Hardreset? Or go to install folder and manually erase?
Do you have a SD card installed in the phone?
In the late WP 8.1 days, Microsoft enabled the feature to use SD card's storage for WindowsUpdate in case Internal Storage was not sufficient.

From what I've read Android pretty much looks after itself but just wondering if there's any system maintainance that should be done from time to time? (i.e is defraging the SD card OK? Any other things worth doing?)
I've stuck with the stock 2.21 ROM but after installing JIT/Deodexed, debloating, overclocking, and scaleing the phone is running along sweetly. Thing is, about 2 1/2gigs of my 16G card is taken up with various System Recovery backups and I've got .apk files in various places. Can the .apks all be put into the same directory and if so where? I've backed the goaprev folder up to my PC and was going to delete all but the last backup from the phone. Basically, I don't want to do anything stupid now the phones nicely sorted out! Thanks in advance.
Since the seeking time on flash memory is so close to instant that fragmentation does not cause any noticable delays, I see no reason to defragment internal memory or my microSD card.
Furthermore, defragmenting a flash disk/drive, a device with a limited amount of writes, may actually shorten its life-span. In that sense, it may actually be a bad idea.
Backing up is always a good recommendation, when working with any electronic system
Thanks. Any idea if it's ok to move the .apk files? (Could be my OCD but I like things tidy!!) Also, wondering what the situation with ota system updates now I've hacked the phone?...leave well alone or okay? Cheers.
Move apk files - from where to where? Out of /system/app? You could move apks you are certain of you will never need, but the only thing you will gain is - at most - a few megabytes of free space. There's no real performance gain to be had, that I've experienced, just the possibility of losing hair if you remove/rename something you need.
As for OTA updates, you can rename FOTA.apk - that's the package that takes care of those updates.
Got several .apks in the root of my sd card- quite happy to leave them there, I guess and I should avoid ota updates...also is it worth clearing out caches once in a while? Just looking to keep my phone as streamlined and snappy as pos without screwing anything up! I'm new to android so still learning the ropes ! Thanks again
Ah yes, apk files are just installation files. You can move them where-ever you wish, though I would not move them to internal storage.
I do not clear out cache, as I prefer features I use regularly, to be cached already, instead of having to load them from scratch. I have not noticed any performance degradation because of it.
And since I do not share my phone with others, there is no privacy issue to speak of. I do not mind sharing my browsing/twitter/market/auto-complete behaviour with myself.
This has been a problem with my device since the very begining, and I would like to know if it's a general problem with Android, if it's a specific problem with the Wildfire S, or if it's just that god hates me and he gives me the devices with all the horrible bugs (see this thread for my other inexplicable bug that no one else seems to have).
Sometimes, when I go into the market and try and download app updates, the update goes through it's process of installation, the progress bar fills up and everything... then right as it's about to finish I get an error. "Update failed, please try again." It's very inconsistent too, sometimes I'll try and download an update a few times, and on the third attempt it gets it. Other times the app won't be able to update for months at a time. My mobile has been trying to get an update for "Cut the Rope" for over 3 weeks now. It gets so annoying I turn the WiFi off because he keeps throwing "Updates Available!" notifications at me that are completely useless to me.
Anyone else have this? Or is my WF-S just cursed?

Try clearing your cache. How much room have you got on your cache partition and in your data paritions?
It has to download a 15 meg or whatever installer for Cut the rope, then unpacking it then install it then delete the original installer. That takes more than 15 megs.
How do I clear the cache?
Also, can't it use my microSD? I have a 32GB card in there.

Use it for what? Can you give me some details? Is your phone S-OFF, rooted, etc?. How much internal memory do you have right now, etc.

You said that when an app is downloaded it needs to first download a 15 MB "cache partition", I was wondering why it can't use some of the space on the microSD. As for rooting, I have a GSM Wildfire S, from what I understand those are difficult to Root... so no, I've never rooted it, and I don't think it's S-Off (I'm not sure how to check that...)
I think I have 31 MB of free internal memory capacity...
pm setInstallLocation 2 and Apps2SD with Tutorial
Forget all you heard from me before as it seems to have served to confuse you which is fine. No worries.
Read this thread
Where it says to type "adb shell pm setInstallLocation" instead to be safe type:
"adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2" which tells the phone to try to install an app to your sd card by default. 0 is auto and 1 is internal.
Keep in mind that it doesn't move 100% of the app to the phone. App libraries, Dalvik cache data and application cache data will stay on the internal memory but it will buy you some space.
That's it.
PS:
Go somewhere and get your phone XTC-Clipped. You will have a lot more options to create space such as Link2SD which moves the apps, app libraries and dalvik cache files to a second external partition you create.
The nice thing about it is DOES allow you to move widget apps and they work.
Another nice thing about it is when you put your phone into usb mass storage mode, even though the primary partition on it with all your own data, pics etc, gets unmounted in the phone and unusable, the second partition doesn't unmount and you can still run all your apps that are linked to it.
Get clipped! If you have enough for a 32 GB card you have enough to spend $20 to get your phone clipped.
Now
When you are done this REBOOT your phone.
Go to this Android Marketplace link and download apps2sd
WATCH the video tutorial and then start moving apps off your internal memory to your SD card.
Beware not to move things that have widgets you want to use like say Doubletwist music player or Battery Monitor. The widgets will no longer function.
Somewhere in that program is a clear application cache choice as well. Clean up your cache for more room.
30 megs is not enough to download AND install Cut The Rope to your internal memory plus your auto sync will stop working when you drop below 18 megs or so of internal space.
Buy yourself some S-ON room with that setup.
If you want to move individual programs to or from the SD card to the phone and back, etc, you can go to /Settings/Applications/Manage/ scroll to and click on the application in question and choose the option to "Move to Phone" or "Move to SD Card".
Cheers.
I see... and this is all low risk right? I mean, getting updates to Cut the Rope would be nice, but it's not the biggest priority in the world, lol.
Also... I'm working on getting that Clip, if I have to I might just buy one... 67$ would still be cheaper than going out to buy a Nexus (from what I hear those are the easiest to Root). This clip would work with a GSM device right? That's how it does it's thing, by plugging into the SIM slot?
I have searched every where I could and is still without a solution. I cannot save any files to my internal memory at all. I cannot download torrents with utorrent, browser, or onedrive. I cannot even backup my apps or contacts to internal memory. It keep saying its either inaccessible or its low on memory. I even factory reseted the phone and im still having the same problem. I am stock rooted. I use my tether alot so I am hoping thats its not a hardware glitch. utorrent no longer gives an option for external memory so I cannot get any torrent. The last time I remember it working was when I downloaded a picture from bing on my browser on May 22nd. Please help or point me to a fix. Thanks in advance.
What does "internal memory" mean to you -- '/storage/emulated/0'?

Yes. I can add and remove files with my computer but root explorer doesn't even let me move files from my SdCard to the storage/emulated/0. Its frustrating
Hi everyone, I'm back to the W10M scene now that I got a new battery for my Lumia 625 and I would like to ask if anyone knows where unfinished update data goes in the system memory so I can delete it?
I have my 625 rooted with WPIntenals and the updates failed (multiple times) but the system now still takes up almost 6GB and I would like to free up some of that space as I have only a 8GB internal memory, I already checked the usual update download folders in Data and can't find anything nor can I find any spkg files by searching so I think there might be some sort of other files that take up that space because I am pretty sure it only took up about 2-3GB before. So does anyone know what files I'm looking for and where they are?
Does no one know?
Now I have only 200MB free on my system and it's only cause of the update that keeps failing, I didn't install anything new in weeks and I anyway have it set to install to SD card. If this keeps up I will be left without any space free on the system.

That folder is empty unfortunately but it also does seem like it stopped eating up any more space even though I got lots of "Couldn't download updates" messages so I'll just leave it as this with those 200MB free.
Ok... phone\data\shareddata\dushared\packages
or phone\windows\servicing\packages do not erase nothing from this folder. After hardreset ...bum, blue sad face..
Data\ProgramData\SoftwareDistribution
It's safe to delete the entire folder (i did twice), but it won't stop the updates from failing.

This did free up 2GB data, thanks a bunch.
And yes, unfortunately there seems to be no way to stop the updates, none of the registry keys that would work on Windows seem to work on W10M. (except not connecting to wi-fi and setting your data connection to metered that is)

There seems to be a way to actually prevent windows update from doing it's job, I have removed all the update data and then modified the hosts file redirecting all the links I could find listed online (and with fiddler) to be related to windows updates to 127.0.0.1 and now the update just sits on 0%, it's been a couple of hours already so I am pretty positive that it won't start the download, perhaps if this was done on a clean install (before the phone even noticed there is an update on the server) it would just never detect an update again.
I have nokia lumia 530 with windows 10 .107 os but now i got new update notification the problem is my phone not have storage any way to download the os into sd card. Please solve my problem waiting for your solution.

you CAN install updates besides low storage (if you already have 10586.107).
1. perform hard reset
2. disable auto update in store
3. enter Storage and delete ALL you can
4. check for updates and you'll have enough space for updates now
after hard reset, DON'T change any of registry entries (your phone should be Lumia 530 again, after hard reset) in order to update to 10586.545 build.
DON'T install Redstone build on L530, because you'll have problem with display scaling (http://forum.xda-developers.com/win...ding-soft-navigation-bar-w10m-phones-t3445926) due to Lumia has 480x854 display resolution...

as I know, there is no solution yet.. I and a few other forum members tried to change some registry entries, but no success.. redstone definitely don't fit on phones with 480x854 resolutions.. if you want win 10 mobile, you should stick to 10586.xxx builds.
p.s. which build you see on the windows update screen? you should get about 1.5-1.6 GB free if you delete everything..

hmmmm. that should be enough. i don't know how much exactly space i made on my lumia, but it was enough.. as titi66200 mentioned, move some apps to sd card.. there are a lot small apps.. it's necessary to delete (or move them to sd) ALL of them... I did it when i was updating from .107 to .318 (that was the last build then). 318 to 494 and to 545 did without deleting apps (probably werent big updates). when i updated to redstone, i had to hard reset the device and succeeded to make space for install.. i don;t know why you can't do it.. check once again or do whole procedure again..
and one more thing: the trick to download update to sd card (that worked on 8.1) does'nt work on win 10.. as I know, there is no possibility to force download to sd card in win 10...

it is necessary that you disable app updates just after reset, because there are some system apps (calendar, weather, outlook mail...) that you cant delete which are small originally, but after their update become 30-50 MB... maybe there is the problem...
Thank all of you it's working and finally i download .545 update without your solution i cannot download the update once again thanks for helping and like this solution you solve Redstone update.
