Nextbit Robin or HTC One M9? Anyone change from the M9 to the Robin? - Nextbit Robin

My 14yr old son needs a new phone. In the past 3 weeks, I've gotten 3 refurbished HTC One M9 phones from Amazon. He loves the phone because of the front facing speakers and it's pretty good at games, but they keep having hardware failure issues and software issues (vibrate motor twice, and a bootloop issue), all on a stock phone.
I'm about to send the 3rd one back and I have a 4th M9 on order, but I keep looking at the Robin.... How's this phone compare, in real life, to the HTC One M9?
He mostly watched YouTube, but also plays games... His biggest complaint is always the battery life, so a decent battery life is a plus. The M9 doesn't seem that good on the battery, but is better than his old M7 was (that just died).
Any input would be appreciated, especially if you came from a M9 to the Robin.

Well, I canceled the M9 and placed an order for a Robin... Hopefully he likes it as much!

[UPDATE]
Phone arrived today, loved everything about it and was going to order one for myself and my son and I would have the same phone....then played a song through it to hear the speakers, and the bottom speaker was blown.
I guess this is what I get for ordering a "Like New" used phone on Amazon.
But it left a bad enough taste in my mouth to just send it back and not get a replacement. I hate that too, but that was the main concern I had with ordering this phone and sure enough, the first one I got had the issue I was concerned about (blown speaker). So I'll probably pass until the Robin 2 (or what ever it will be called) comes out.

What you had to do is update the software to the latest version which fixes the speakers issue. When I got my Nextbit Robin, powered on and went through setup and asked for software update. Once software update finished continued with setup then once that was done in the settings section there was another update.
Older update caused speaker problems.

That was after the latest update.. I think it was a hardware issue.

My HTC One X

About 1 month ago I sadly broke my Samsung Galaxy SII just after changing my contract from Voda to Three.
I since contacted Three to get a issue with my sim only deal sorted which allowed me to upgrade early. (after the first 3 months) It did however take a few calls to and from the exec office to get this sorted since the calls to the usual call centre are worthless.
Anyway after all that I finally received my early upgrade which was a HTC One X. To be honest I didn't really want this as I was trying to wait for the Galaxy SIII, however I couldn't do without a phone for so long and wasn't aware of the SIII release date back then. After receiving my HTC One X I was REALLY impressed with it, the screen, sound, appearance were all excellent. After using the phone for a few days I noticed the haptic feedback buttons were making a bit too much of noise and not the usual shock vibration it was doing when I first got it. I contacted Three who arranged a doorstep exchange for me. Once the new phone arrived I used the phone for another few days only for more problems to slowly start appearing. The screen itself started to not come on when I was pressing the lock button, the lights were lighting up but the screen was not coming up. I have to constantly keep pressing the lock button over and over to try get it on. The screen itself also just start flickering around and then just blurrs up like the resolution is screwing up so all the icons are on top of eachother and the only way to get it off is by locking it and unlocking it. I have no idea as to why it happened. I have a protective case around it with a screen protector on the screen too. It has never been dropped or treated poorly so I was bemused.
I decided to contact Three again as this was not right. The first person I spoke to told me to take the phone to my local Three store and they will put it in for repair. I decided to contact them back a few hours later to explain I didn't want this and was not happy to get another HTC or that one replaced. This customer service advisor was a lot more helpful and explained I could have another doorstep exchange for another handset since the first 2 HTC's have not functioned as they should. Since I now knew the released date of the SIII I told the advisor I would rather wait for the SIII and he told me that it was fine and would be delivered on the 1st June. All I had to do was box the HTC up and hand it over to the courier on the day my new one arrives.
Thought I would share my problems with the HTC One X along with saying I will NEVER touch another HTC Would add if people are lucky enough to get a working HTC and have no issues then fair play, the phone was nice and had excellent features
Cheers,
Luke

Mate you should contact them back once the phone goes back and say you are not willing to have another HTC as they keep on going. It always differ from each customer service advisor to another with Three, one says one thing and another says different lol

could do..but that means putting money as well in which i really can not afford right now...so one x is the next best thing. so two things.
either it comes back brand spanking new.
they offer me an exchange (which means either brand new handset or can choose what phone i want)
Got my one x a month ago today and it's been working perfectly, anything wrong solved by software updates. Love it, greatest phone ever, & I personally think it's better than the s3 (from video impressions). Saying that the two phones are such beasts its all down to personal preference, so I wish you luck with the s3!

It's a real shame about the phone though because when it was working it is up there with the best for sure. If this had not been my 2nd faulty HTC then I would of taken it back but it just doesn't seem like the HTC One X was the one for me
Look forward to getting my S3 though after the S2 was a big fave of mine. Even if they give you the HTC back repaired or just send you a new one are you happy to accept that? If not have you thought about contacting the executive office and speaking to them? I found them to be a greater help when dealing with issues.
Thanks,
Luke

Well. Depending on what they say to me. If they say we are sending you the handset back and it is repaired and i know when i check it instore it is build like a brick wall then i will keep it as i still think it is a top phone and i already have like a few cases for it. now if they say we can send you a replacement then i will ask if i can go for a different handset ie the s3. if they say no and it has to be the same phone then i will just get the one x....i really can not say till the day comes.
perfect world would be to offer me a different handset if i was not happy with getting a different one x. if they just say they will replace like for like then i still be a happy guy no matter what but i would prefer the s3

T-Mo G3 Problems? (Trying to get some D851 Specific Discussion)

So... over on the main G3 section, there's a lot of talk about several issues.
1) Phone randomly shutting down, or failing to come out of deep sleep (after overnight charging, for instance - but also at more random times). Often, folks are having to pop the batter to get it to come back to life.
2) Problems with using the headphone jack as an aux-output (for car or home stereo, as an example). There are glitches with the phone not realizing it's plugged into something, and glitches with the phone sending out dirty signals in between tracks (pops, crackles, etc), and with a buzz or hum in one side or another.
3) Problems with the phone becoming exceptionally warm. All phones get warm, but some users are reporting that their phones become extremely uncomfortable to hold, and simultaneously begin to have hardware problems (phone just dying completely, or screen flicker).
4) Those who have purchased multiple phones have reported issues with screen variances (some screens will appear warmer or cooler, more blue or more yellow), even with phones that were purchased from the same store on the same day. Some have reported needing to get a replacement phone and noticing this.
I'm curious about getting some discussion going here. Have any of you here had these problems with your D851 (T-mobile) G3's? have you had any major problems with your devices, or needed to get a replacement? Why? It seems like many of the problems are with the D855s, but I'm curious how many are truly affecting our D851s.
Thanks for the feedback!
TL/DR: What big problems have you had on T-Mo G3? Needed a replacement? Thnx!
My first G3 I bought on launch day from the t mobile store had overheating and rapid battery killing issues even after resets and doing everything from scratch. I swapped that one out yesterday and the second one I got was running good but then I ran into the headphone jax bug where it doesn't recognize the headphones being plugged in and after about 4 or 5 resets and wipes it finally starting working.... Right now I am debating if I should just get another G3 or what because the next one might have something else wrong lol.. I go to t mobile today so hopefully everything will go well.
Only one of those I've experienced is the problems with the aux jack
My G3 is perfect to the point I even recommend it to my girlfriend who ended up paying cash for one... Well with hers it wouldn't wake up from a deep sleep while charging and needed a battery pull. I'm definitely going to keep eye on that.
Haven't had any of the issues with mine. Although I just got it yesterday. It worked fine with headphones but haven't tried plugging into my truck yet.
Aux worked fine in my truck..
The only issue I have is the aux in my car. I turn on Bluetooth so I can still play music in my car. I'm ok but lg should definitely fix this.

Hopefully won't get scolded because I already mentioned it in another thread... :/
- My first G3, an AT&T had an issue where knock on didnt work most of the time. Returned it and went to T-Mobile.
- My current T-Mobile version has display issues. Screen has an overall yellowish tint and has been getting worse by the day. The top right corner of my screen just started getting more discolored as well. My brightness is abnormal... it looks as if it goes to 150%, lol. Too bright even on 0%.
Went back to the store, after comparing my phone to the demo models and the salesmen's personal phones, mine was determined as defective. Was going to exchange and they went back to get one phone after another - all 3 that they opened had worse screens than mine. They think they may have gotten a bad batch and advised me to come back in a week when they hopefully get a shipment from a different batch. I dont feel like waiting a week and gambling again, so im going to return it for a full refund. Going to get an AT&T version and unlock it for T-Mobile.
Quick update to what I posted earlier... I went back to t-mobile to replace my 2nd G3 due to Aux port not working and they gave me a new one and I have to say that this is the best one i got screen wise. OMG its beautiful.... colors are balanced, temp of the screen is near perfect not to cold not to warm, sharpness yes its still crazy high but it doesn't have the blurry looking effect with text and certain apps and everything else seems to be working like it should be. Hopefully the 3rd device is going to be the charm if not then idk lol...

Did you buy your device outright? I'm just switching to Tmobile, ordered my G3 online. And for now, I used their equipment payment plan. I'm gonna wait and see how bad the network is in my area. If I go for it, I'll be paying it off straight away. Just curious how Tmobile is about replacing devices that are defective. Are they pretty on top of it?
Or should I invest in some kind insurance? (actual insurance... uggghhh... or the Jump program (also doesn't appeal, but as flaky as these things have been, I'm worried))

Yea I bought the device outright because I sold my S5 and I don't use jump since I switch phones a lot. As for insurance and defective devices I use Tmobile's just without jump and they are pretty good with swapping bad devices. My M8 had a network/sim issues they literally sent 5 M8's because the issue wasn't going away but they made sure the problem was fix lol. Even my S5 screen went bad and they had me a replacement device the next day... so I can't really say anything negative about there warranty/insurance polices. Even with the G3 they replaced the device as soon as i showed something was wrong with a brand new one in box
My opinion

@Eldartho well i would say get it replaced. I did notice the lines with one of the display units in the store. LG is very hit or miss with the displays on the G3.... My current replacment is saturated like my s5 out the box but my last one was dull like z2/z1 so the displays are going to be a raffle on getting the right one. As for the deepsleep that sounded like the problem my first device had and it would always stay hot and drain extremely fast

You are lucky, lol. Last 3 phones I bought from T-Mobile (M8, S5, G3) have all had to be exchanged due to hardware issues. Beginning to think they build the T-Mobile phones with bottom of the box parts, haha. To be fair though, I first bought the AT&T G3 and returned because Knock On wasn't working.
I bought mine off of swappa from a beta winner and it is perfect. Same with my s5. I am lucky x2 it seems

Speaker(ear) buzzing all of a sudden?

I got my 5x about a few weeks ago, and it's been perfect so far - until a couple of days ago. The earpiece speaker buzzes something awful when I'm talking to people. Any sound coming from that speaker makes this buzzing noise - almost like a blown speaker would. Oddly, I can't hear the buzz if I hold the phone up to my left ear.
I Googled around and haven't found anything about this which is odd because it's hard to believe it's just me. So, I'm checking in here to find out if anyone else has experienced this or heard of this problem.
Thanks!
I had this issue with my first 5X, a few weeks after launch. RMA'd it and haven't had the issue since.

If you bought it from Google, they send out advance replacements before you send back the defective one, so you never need to go without a phone.

nice!!!!! Score!!!!!!
And no sooner than 1 week did my new, replacement 5x do the same thing. What a huge disappointment this phone has been. So, now I have to get a 3rd phone, and do the RMA process. I explained to the guy on the phone that I don't have any confidence in this phone now, and that I don't want to be stuck down the road with a phone that has this problem. He said the warranty runs one year from the ORIGINAL phone purchase. That doesn't help me very much unless the 3rd time really IS the charm, and this phone will not have this problem. I'm really hoping, and my fingers are crossed. I asked to just be refunded so I could get an entirely different phone, but he told me no.
I'll be back to update this.

This is not a software issue, it's a hardware defect. Keep sending it back until you get a good one. I had to RMA four of these things for hardware defects. QC of Nexus devices has always sucked, and until this changes, I fully expect to go through this with every purchase.
I had this issue and this going to sound weird but put your mouth on the speaker and blow in and suck out. It's weird but it worked for me. Of course RMA is the best choice

It's just crazy to me. I ditched my ATT Galaxy S4 (for multiple reasons), and I promised myself I would get an actual Google phone next time around. So, I did, and I always thought LG made wonderful electronics, but it seems not to be the case. Disappointed, but hopefully the 3rd time is the charm.

Oh, you bought a new speaker. I was confused. Well, my third phone is doing the same thing, and oddly, blowing and then sucking from the speaker area fixes it temporarily.
I requested a refund from Google. I'm not interested in paying $350 for a phone that I have to blow into the speaker to make it perform properly - that just sounds silly.

has anyone heard anything about the speaker buzzing

I'm pretty sure it's a well-known fact that the bottom speaker on the pixel 2 XL Buzz's in a lot of circumstances. In my case it's whenever I listen to voicemail or turn any video or notifications up past 50%.
Has anybody heard anything about Google acknowledging this and finding a fix?
This is a definite design flaw probably software-based because the volumes aren't balanced between the two speakers and I hate that nothing is being done about it.

I'm on my third RMA. The last one I got was manufactured in January 2018 and it still has the same issue.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
I don't know man I'm on my 6th device because of speaker issues. Two RMA's I got had dead pixels so those just went straight back to Google. I had ones with decent speaker max speaker phone call with next to no distortion but one of the speakers went out that has a build date of dec. The most recent dead pixel replacement was built in late dec and the speaker sounded like ****. I just got a new replacement from Google and the device was from the first batch of phones. Guess they really didn't sell that many black ones vs the panda. Anyways no dead pixels, some blue shift (like every single one) and the speaker sounds like absolute **** on calls after 50%. Not sure if I want to put up with this rubbish or not anymore. They know it's an issue and are gladly RMAing for it apparently. But you figure it's probably a software fix that they would push it out right away. It's already coming up on the 5th month since the launch. There hasn't been any official announcement from Google regarding the fix yet.

Has anyone RMA'd recently???

i have a Pixel 2 XL and the speaker grill seems to be loose and i read that the speaker grill has everything to do with thew phones water resistance, so i want to take no chances... My phone was purchased directly from the playstore and i have never done an rma before, and i know that they send refurbs back to anyone requesting an rma for whatever issue,.... I have read about the faulty RMA devices sent back with screen issues speaker issues etv... and i was wondering if anyone has RMA'd recently to tell me the condition of their new device.... i have a 64 gb panda version and the screen is flawless speakers are good camera is perfect... im scared to get a dud back....thanks for reading... looking forward to your feed back

I've legitimately had 7 or so rma's and just got one this week for a speaker issue. It was just buzzing, try the YouTube technique of pressing in with a guitar pick and it did not help at all.

now if I may ask you, what were the main issues with the devices you got in return again the device that I have right now is spotless but the girl on the speaker seems to be loose and I can actually move it around and wiggle it inside of the hole... The only reason I want to return it is because of the waterproofing being faulty now I don't want to damage my device
that and I have an abnormal battery drain on my phone as well so I am hoping that I get a newer phone with a better screen and newer battery if it is possible and a fixed speaker Grill lol..
The guilty for this device was in December did you notice anything about the build dates for your devices how are the screen or what was your experience like

I honestly am ignorant to the build date thing. 1st one screen burn in w/in first month or so. rejected RMA because screen would flash white every time i turned screen off. 3rd one, gps kept saying i was in CLE, no one from google knew why, so they sent replacement. they sent RMA, rma speakers were garbage. rattled and muted with ANY pressure to the screen, they repkaced and lower speaker was buzzing.. this one seems great
RMA'd mine in August for a problem with the USB port. The refurbished device I received was like new. The only difference, it came in a different, thinner box, without the charger.
Don't worry, you'll get a perfect phone. In fact the replacement device I got has a better display, with less blue shift

I did the same at the beginning of October for the same problem. The one i received is in mint condition.
I just RMAed mine because it would no longer hold USB C cables. Like they wouldn't click in they just fall out. Also i had an enormous amount of screen burn-in (happened just weeks after i got the phone)
My RMA phone looks brand new i would never guessed its a refurb. Screen is perfect and USB cables click in and stay there.
Plus if you got the phone from Google the RMA process is super easy (had to RMA my Nexus 5 too) They dont make you jump through hoops doing stupid troubleshooting crap.
RMA'd mine a few days ago, replacement should arrive today
Had screen burn-in around the navbar area
Speakers rattled too much for my liking
Battery life was becoming pretty bad regardless of being stock/on a custom ROM/kernel
USB port, although was holding cables in place, would come out very easily
The Google rep basically stopped me at burn-in and asked for proof of purchase (order ID) and proof of burn-in (taking a pic of the screen with another phone)
After I did both, he set the RMA up and now I'm just hoping the replacement is issue-free, since I have read some users sending replacement after replacement back because the replacements had issues of their own. Fingers crossed!
Update 1:
Due to Canada Post labour disruptions, my replacement is delayed ?. I'll update this post with the quality of the replacement as soon as it arrives.
Update 2:
Finally received the replacement and I got lucky with a brand new device! I called to ask if I need to send back accessories that came with my device and I do not. Basically have two of every accessory, on top of a brand new phone (and not refurbished).
It is manufactured in October 2017 but I see no blue shift or other screen issues. If anything it looks better! I just need to test the battery, hopefully it hasn't depreciated just sitting in the box for a year.
I RMAed a pixel 2 and a pixel 2xl and got 2 brand new phones (with old manufacture date tho) living in germany fyi
I RMA my Verizon pixel 2 xl about 2 months ago because the phone would lag, freeze, and become unusable Everytime I had Google maps navigation open and Spotify running in the background. No questions asked, phone was still under warranty, and I received my new device(was not refurbished) 2 days later.
I just RMA'd to Google here in Canada. Had freezing and lagging issues. That sent me what appears to be a brand new device, box, charger and all. My screen even had a small crack but they still sent me a new one.

I wonder if they actually use the same facilities for Canada and the United States
Did you ship locally in Canada or did you ship to the United States @acheney1990
I'm in this same boat. I have RMA'd three times now, always having random freezes, frame drop outs and lagging on stock ROM, no root. My RMA is scheduled to be delivered today. I have received refurbs each time, but they have been good phones for the most part.
I had to RMA the replacement device I got in August because of camera problems.
It went smoothly and it was fast the first time, but that time it seems Google it trying to make the RMA process hell for me.
I contacted them last Monday (October 22nd). After the usual resolution steps (Was the phone dropped? Is the camera app up-to-date? Can you reproduce the problem in Safe Mode? Have you factory resetted it? blah blah blah), they accept my RMA request and tell me I would receive my shipping label soon.
At 9 PM the same day I receive this email instead:
Thanks for contacting Google Support.
This email is in regards to our conversation we had over chat. Due to some tool issue at our end we're not able to generate RMA for the standard replacement. Once the issue will resolve, we'll create the RMA and send you an confirmation email.
Alternatively, if you wish we can process the Advance exchange in this case.
If you've any query, please let us know. I'd happy to help you.
Thanks!

Fair enough, problems can happen and they must be very busy with the Pixel 3 launch. I'm not a jerk, I can understand there are delays.
But still no email, follow-up or update from them after a week. On October 29th (last Monday), I contact them again and talk to someone else. I explain the situation, and they tell me they'll retry to generate my RMA request/shipping label. After almost an hour of trying to re-create my RMA , the employee I'm talking to asks me if it's OK to continue the discussion by mail instead. I accept. Mistake
Later that day, same sh*t again. No shipping label, I receive this email instead:
Thanks for contacting Google.

I provide them with the requested informations immediately.
Two days later, still no follow up. I write an email asking what's going on and asking if they need something else. Many hours later, they send me this:
Thank you for contacting Google support team.
My apology for the delay. I am in direct touch with the next level. I would request you to help me with the proof of purchase of the device with visible order ID on it.

I sent them a screenshot of my phone order with the order ID. I'm awaiting for a response, but at this point I feel they're somehow trying to buy some time.
I'm a very polite customer, but that's so frustrating... the RMA was accepted 10 days ago, just send me my shipping label for the love of God... You're telling me it's been a week and a half, and your system still can't generate RMA shipping labels? You're Google ffs, not a small, unknown company...
I'm stuck with a device I paid $1400 CAD and it doesn't work. Can I get a device that works please Google?
Google Is sending me a Band New Pixel 2 XL. I received a refurbished device with a dead speaker and the guy I called was like( I have good news) your getting a Brand New Phone. I still had to put a hold for $919 on my card for the device and now I'm hopping I don't receive another crappy device.
