has anyone heard anything about the speaker buzzing - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I'm pretty sure it's a well-known fact that the bottom speaker on the pixel 2 XL Buzz's in a lot of circumstances. In my case it's whenever I listen to voicemail or turn any video or notifications up past 50%.
Has anybody heard anything about Google acknowledging this and finding a fix?
This is a definite design flaw probably software-based because the volumes aren't balanced between the two speakers and I hate that nothing is being done about it.

i RMA'd
i RMA'd my device 3 days ago (sent it back for a new one) becasue of this and hopefully the next one i get dosnt have this problem.

I'm on my third RMA. The last one I got was manufactured in January 2018 and it still has the same issue.

I don't know man I'm on my 6th device because of speaker issues. Two RMA's I got had dead pixels so those just went straight back to Google. I had ones with decent speaker max speaker phone call with next to no distortion but one of the speakers went out that has a build date of dec. The most recent dead pixel replacement was built in late dec and the speaker sounded like ****. I just got a new replacement from Google and the device was from the first batch of phones. Guess they really didn't sell that many black ones vs the panda. Anyways no dead pixels, some blue shift (like every single one) and the speaker sounds like absolute **** on calls after 50%. Not sure if I want to put up with this rubbish or not anymore. They know it's an issue and are gladly RMAing for it apparently. But you figure it's probably a software fix that they would push it out right away. It's already coming up on the 5th month since the launch. There hasn't been any official announcement from Google regarding the fix yet.

Nextbit Robin or HTC One M9? Anyone change from the M9 to the Robin?

My 14yr old son needs a new phone. In the past 3 weeks, I've gotten 3 refurbished HTC One M9 phones from Amazon. He loves the phone because of the front facing speakers and it's pretty good at games, but they keep having hardware failure issues and software issues (vibrate motor twice, and a bootloop issue), all on a stock phone.
I'm about to send the 3rd one back and I have a 4th M9 on order, but I keep looking at the Robin.... How's this phone compare, in real life, to the HTC One M9?
He mostly watched YouTube, but also plays games... His biggest complaint is always the battery life, so a decent battery life is a plus. The M9 doesn't seem that good on the battery, but is better than his old M7 was (that just died).
Any input would be appreciated, especially if you came from a M9 to the Robin.
Well, I canceled the M9 and placed an order for a Robin... Hopefully he likes it as much!
[UPDATE]
Phone arrived today, loved everything about it and was going to order one for myself and my son and I would have the same phone....then played a song through it to hear the speakers, and the bottom speaker was blown.
I guess this is what I get for ordering a "Like New" used phone on Amazon.
But it left a bad enough taste in my mouth to just send it back and not get a replacement. I hate that too, but that was the main concern I had with ordering this phone and sure enough, the first one I got had the issue I was concerned about (blown speaker). So I'll probably pass until the Robin 2 (or what ever it will be called) comes out.

What you had to do is update the software to the latest version which fixes the speakers issue. When I got my Nextbit Robin, powered on and went through setup and asked for software update. Once software update finished continued with setup then once that was done in the settings section there was another update.
Older update caused speaker problems.

That was after the latest update.. I think it was a hardware issue.

Rattling Vibration?

Is anybody else experiencing a loud, rattling sound from the vibrator? It sounds like the motor is loose or something. Not sure if I should RMA or not.

I saw another person had posted a nightmare story about this issue yes. Support gave him the run around by having him take it to a certified cell phone repair spot and they said the same thing as him that something wasn't right with it. That it was an obvious hardware failure. Then support through google if I remember correctly, gave him more slack about the issue... I don't have this issue thank god but I've seen people with the issue on here yes.
Found the post.

Do you think I can get it replaced at Best Buy? I bought it there last night. I would imagine they have to?

They have a good return policy, I believe thirty days from receipt . I'd get it replaced right away, sounds like you have a defective one yes. I'd also make sure that it sounds right in front of them with the new one too though if I was you.
I had an HTC 10 have this very same issue and Sprint tech immediately deemed it defective and gave me a new one.

The best buy I bought it from wasn't accepting returns or exchanges on black Friday weekend, but I found one that did. I still hear the noise on the new phone, but it's completely bearable. I'm glad I bought it from a physical store (don't care about the bootloader). Thanks for the info guys

Mine doesn't rattle, but it almost sounds like a buzzer.
This is happening on mine, it's super loud and annoying. I loved the phone up until this issue. Just contacted Google and they told me to basically break the phone completely or kick rocks, extremely upset.
Mine gives a weird crackling sound sometimes when on vibrate. The strange thing is that it sounds like it's coming from the speaker and not the vibration motor. Sounds like the sound crackling issue but mine happens on vibrate!

That doesn't really make sense. You should obv chat them back. Do the proper troubleshooting. Factory reset and set up as completely new. If it still happens it's a hardware issue (most likely is) and they will absolutely replace it..

I plan on calling them once a week until I get a new phone. It's not a software issue at all. The little vibration motor is unattached from it's mount point and it rattles against the chassis.
As it sits now, the only thing I could do is simply open the Pixel XL and reattach the motor with an adhesive. This is the worst part really, If I where to open it and fix it, my payed warranty through the Google store would be settled. If I where to "break" the phone I would use the warranty to provide the replacement. All this to get a phone that is not embarrassing when you get notifications because of a manufacturer defect.
So I'm stuck until they recognise it for what it is, a manufacturing defect. Just a quick Google search turns up many YouTube videos of people being effected by this awful sound. Try it yourself Google "Pixel vibration rattle" and sort by videos. This many in just a few months might indicate a wide spread problem, rattle gate if you will.
Even worse, on Android 7.1.1 there is no global vibrate toggle, you have to change the apps individual notification setting and the option is to just turn off notifications rather than a vibration toggle. Extremely inconvenient when it's as loud as it is. Oh and the vibration feeling is weak so it's like a horrible notification tone lol.
/rant over.
Still love you Google, this is just not the way I would have expected dealing with this issue outright.

Earpiece/Ringer/Notifications too quiet... please help

Let me start with I'm new to this forum and tried searching but am having a hard time navigating the forum (from being new).
Background: I am coming from a Nexus 6p that was showing it's age... battery sucked and bricked one time and came back to life. I had enough and remembered I had bought Nexus protect that was ready to expire is 2 weeks so I called it in.
Fast forward...they are no longer supporting the 6p and sent me a pixel XL 128... GREAT!!!
I set it up and switch everything over Sunday night. Go to work Monday and can't hear any notifications or phone call ringer. Actually caught a phone call in time and can barely hear out of the earpiece. Had to go somewhere completely quiet to hear. Google wants to send me another one but I just left a Verizon store and their display was just as quiet (as well as the pixel 2).
Is there a fix? Should I have them send me another?
Thanks in advance!
Searched around this sight as well as others last night and still no definitive answer.
The main problem that seems to ringer/notification not loud enough. I have read that tried different ringers and are loud for preview but then when downloaded is half as loud. I tried and ended up with the same results.
Is this how the phone is or is there a solution?
Thanks

I've legitimately had 7 or so rma's and just got one this week for a speaker issue. It was just buzzing, try the YouTube technique of pressing in with a guitar pick and it did not help at all.

now if I may ask you, what were the main issues with the devices you got in return again the device that I have right now is spotless but the girl on the speaker seems to be loose and I can actually move it around and wiggle it inside of the hole... The only reason I want to return it is because of the waterproofing being faulty now I don't want to damage my device
that and I have an abnormal battery drain on my phone as well so I am hoping that I get a newer phone with a better screen and newer battery if it is possible and a fixed speaker Grill lol..
The guilty for this device was in December did you notice anything about the build dates for your devices how are the screen or what was your experience like

I honestly am ignorant to the build date thing. 1st one screen burn in w/in first month or so. rejected RMA because screen would flash white every time i turned screen off. 3rd one, gps kept saying i was in CLE, no one from google knew why, so they sent replacement. they sent RMA, rma speakers were garbage. rattled and muted with ANY pressure to the screen, they repkaced and lower speaker was buzzing.. this one seems great
RMA'd mine in August for a problem with the USB port. The refurbished device I received was like new. The only difference, it came in a different, thinner box, without the charger.
Don't worry, you'll get a perfect phone. In fact the replacement device I got has a better display, with less blue shift

I did the same at the beginning of October for the same problem. The one i received is in mint condition.
I just RMAed mine because it would no longer hold USB C cables. Like they wouldn't click in they just fall out. Also i had an enormous amount of screen burn-in (happened just weeks after i got the phone)
My RMA phone looks brand new i would never guessed its a refurb. Screen is perfect and USB cables click in and stay there.
Plus if you got the phone from Google the RMA process is super easy (had to RMA my Nexus 5 too) They dont make you jump through hoops doing stupid troubleshooting crap.
RMA'd mine a few days ago, replacement should arrive today
Had screen burn-in around the navbar area
Speakers rattled too much for my liking
Battery life was becoming pretty bad regardless of being stock/on a custom ROM/kernel
USB port, although was holding cables in place, would come out very easily
The Google rep basically stopped me at burn-in and asked for proof of purchase (order ID) and proof of burn-in (taking a pic of the screen with another phone)
After I did both, he set the RMA up and now I'm just hoping the replacement is issue-free, since I have read some users sending replacement after replacement back because the replacements had issues of their own. Fingers crossed!
Update 1:
Due to Canada Post labour disruptions, my replacement is delayed ?. I'll update this post with the quality of the replacement as soon as it arrives.
Update 2:
Finally received the replacement and I got lucky with a brand new device! I called to ask if I need to send back accessories that came with my device and I do not. Basically have two of every accessory, on top of a brand new phone (and not refurbished).
It is manufactured in October 2017 but I see no blue shift or other screen issues. If anything it looks better! I just need to test the battery, hopefully it hasn't depreciated just sitting in the box for a year.
I RMAed a pixel 2 and a pixel 2xl and got 2 brand new phones (with old manufacture date tho) living in germany fyi
I RMA my Verizon pixel 2 xl about 2 months ago because the phone would lag, freeze, and become unusable Everytime I had Google maps navigation open and Spotify running in the background. No questions asked, phone was still under warranty, and I received my new device(was not refurbished) 2 days later.
I just RMA'd to Google here in Canada. Had freezing and lagging issues. That sent me what appears to be a brand new device, box, charger and all. My screen even had a small crack but they still sent me a new one.

I wonder if they actually use the same facilities for Canada and the United States
Did you ship locally in Canada or did you ship to the United States @acheney1990
I'm in this same boat. I have RMA'd three times now, always having random freezes, frame drop outs and lagging on stock ROM, no root. My RMA is scheduled to be delivered today. I have received refurbs each time, but they have been good phones for the most part.
I had to RMA the replacement device I got in August because of camera problems.
It went smoothly and it was fast the first time, but that time it seems Google it trying to make the RMA process hell for me.
I contacted them last Monday (October 22nd). After the usual resolution steps (Was the phone dropped? Is the camera app up-to-date? Can you reproduce the problem in Safe Mode? Have you factory resetted it? blah blah blah), they accept my RMA request and tell me I would receive my shipping label soon.
At 9 PM the same day I receive this email instead:
Thanks for contacting Google Support.
This email is in regards to our conversation we had over chat. Due to some tool issue at our end we're not able to generate RMA for the standard replacement. Once the issue will resolve, we'll create the RMA and send you an confirmation email.
Alternatively, if you wish we can process the Advance exchange in this case.
If you've any query, please let us know. I'd happy to help you.
Thanks!

Fair enough, problems can happen and they must be very busy with the Pixel 3 launch. I'm not a jerk, I can understand there are delays.
But still no email, follow-up or update from them after a week. On October 29th (last Monday), I contact them again and talk to someone else. I explain the situation, and they tell me they'll retry to generate my RMA request/shipping label. After almost an hour of trying to re-create my RMA , the employee I'm talking to asks me if it's OK to continue the discussion by mail instead. I accept. Mistake
Later that day, same sh*t again. No shipping label, I receive this email instead:
Thanks for contacting Google.

I'm a very polite customer, but that's so frustrating... the RMA was accepted 10 days ago, just send me my shipping label for the love of God... You're telling me it's been a week and a half, and your system still can't generate RMA shipping labels? You're Google ffs, not a small, unknown company...
I'm stuck with a device I paid $1400 CAD and it doesn't work. Can I get a device that works please Google?
Google Is sending me a Band New Pixel 2 XL. I received a refurbished device with a dead speaker and the guy I called was like( I have good news) your getting a Brand New Phone. I still had to put a hold for $919 on my card for the device and now I'm hopping I don't receive another crappy device.

Static noise during a call.

Has anyone noticed strange static, buzzing noises coming out of the top speaker during the phone call?
It's not happening all the time but I can hear it on most calls. Sounds like internal antennas or something like that.
3XL UK, tried both EE and Three.
Some users reported that turning off HD calling may help but this is not available to do here in UK.
Already with Google customer service, waiting for their reply.
I wonder how many units may be affected.
Please post if you have this issue or not

I too have this issue.
But this issue is more pronounced when I am on VoLTE calls.
Contacted Google Support and yet to receive a response from them.
I have been offered RMA from Google but I want to hold on for now to see if an update will fix it. I reckon most phones have it but not everyone notice it or is bothered.
RMA'd for this issue and replacement still had it but was much quieter than original phone. Keeping replacement. It's clearly a shielding problem. Thanks for playing pixel lottery.

Thanks for feedback.
From your experience, does it happens on every call you make?
For me I can only hear it on some calls.
Someone on Reddit posted that:
Update from OP : Today I met the Google technician at a public cafe - this is the guy assigned by Google support to pick my mobile for servicing. He calmly asked me to unlock the phone and hand it to him, I did, and then he popped out the sim. He switched to another sim, (he was carrying one) and toggled airplane mode and back.
He placed a call and handed the phone over to me. I was like, meh, I've already tried this. But surprisingly, I got no static, no noise. I thought it was a temporary thing, so I ordered coffee and we continued talking about the device while I kept trying to call friends and test the device. No issues again!
He then explained the issue to me - this device earpiece isn't the problem, the baseband/kernel on this device causes it to have lesser signal strength. As soon as I switched to a network with proper VOLTE, the issue disappeared. This is because not all network towers are compatible with this version of the modem's software. Either the networks need signal strength upgrades, or baseband kernels need fixing. Either way, Google is already working with service providers to fix such issues.
He then asked me to not submit the device for repair/factory inspection. I was so confused by not being able to reproduce the issue then, so I went along with his suggestion.
So now, I have a perfectly working device that suffers in poor signal conditions... What happened with your device?
Every call but some worse than others. Sounds like PSU or GPU coil whine.
Someone should ask that Google employee why it doesn't happen on my old S5 (which had over a dozen modems), my wife's 6S, and the Z3 in my car? Why is there static on wifi calls or bluetooth calls?
If it's bothering you, RMA now while replacements are still new phones.
Same problem. Already have the RMA in route.
Have you tried calls via WhatsApp, doing same?

Mine is not always present it's coming and going. I am affriad I will get worse that the one I have now.
I will wait and see how much it bothers be
Probably all units got it to some degree.
I played the Pixel lottery and lost. The replacement was three times worse. Crazy... 100% sure this is a shielding issue. Google has promised to make it right. I am sending the replacement back and they are sending out another new unit. Round 2
Wow I had this issue on Pixel 2 XL and thought they might have fixed it on Pixel 3 XL.. Looks like they made it worse.. I wonder when Pixel phones will be free of bugs.. probably Pixel 10 XL

I had same problem on my Pixel 2.
Just to update everyone. I have decided to return my phone and reorder with black Friday offering £40 off.
New phone has perfectly clear earpiece, no more static noises.
If it bothers you keep exchanging until you get a good one !
I have the same problem with buzzing in the earpiece during call. Additionally many people say that they can not hear me correctly, my voice is skipping. I hope that they will fix it in the next update as it seems to be modem related. Some calls are normal and some have these problems. Unfortunately I can not RMA as Google is not officially selling pixels in Poland.
