Wifi reception - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

I have fairly poor WiFi where I live to begin with.. But my OP3 gets half the download speed of my iPhone 5s and the 5s actually loads pages and videos faster than it.. Is there any way I can improve the speed of the WiFi? Could an update fix this, or a custom ROM?

3G speed poor on Rogers (on my unit at least), trying to troubleshoot

Please, anyone that has Hermes Tytn, I have all my 3G connections correct, however download speed is close to 700 kbps and fairly large latency, according to dslreports.com . Can anyone that has a TyTN on Rogers network verify that they are getting sufficient speed from their unit ie downloading internet pages, and if so, would like to know what browser they are using, and perhaps whether Sim card upgrade, could make a difference. My 1.51 radio appears to work fine, but wondering if this could make an absolute huge difference in speed, if I was to change to another radio. Someone told me to upgrade my Sim card to the 4000 series, which I did, but no change at all. Thanks to anyone.
hmm
Not sure about rogers but I do find opera 9.5 seems to be better than PIE. This is the version I use.

I'm on Rogers. I got 613 kbps with a 0.299s latency. What is it supposed to average?
Good question,, I will have to learn these terms ie kbps and latency.. I think the you should strive to get lower latency figures. I have run the iPhone 3G test on my Tytn and the dslreports speed test, and I get confused. On top of that, I really get p..d off when I see how slow my internet page loads up compared to an actual iPhone. Sure different browser, processor etc,, but it's humiliating downloading a page next to a friends 3g iPhone.

dslreports have never been an accurate test unfortunatly. When i was on O2-UK gprs i got a report of 1.2Mbps lol!!
I'll take a look around and try find a decent speedtester.
If your constantly comparing your device to an iPhone sir then that shows you lack confidence in the Hermes and other device......I DO HOPE thats not the case?
Try opera mini, gets on alot better that opera mobile for some reason.
of course not Mrvanx,, I love my Hermes and the myriad of operations that I can undertake compared to IP and been using it with confidence for some time now. Sure wouldn't give it up . Just trying to get the full use of 3G and minimize obstructions to speed. Someone had mentioned something about UA (user agent) being a factor. Currently using Opera 8.65 on main memory. Had tried the Opera mini,, and loved it,,however, I suppose now that we hav 6GB of data for $30Cdn , don't have to worry about data for now
Welcome to the infection of the I-Phone. LOLL, Everyone over on Howard forums was talking about this topic. As soon as Rogers brought in the I-Phone everyone wanted to play with them, which is causing major data traffic. It started about 2 days after the release, my speeds went to crap. I am pretty sure it will all level off once the initial fad has passed. Most I-Phone nuts are just into it for the Fashion statement. Its a popular thing. Kinda like the Moto Razor craze a few years ago.
P.S. did you get on the 6gb $30 plane from Rogers?
Yes,,,did get the 6gb 30$ plan,,thx Today I ran a dslreport speed test..even though MrVanx doesn't think it much of a good test for now (think he is trying to find a better one).. Am including screen capture of todays test.. I don't know how good, bad , or how far from average this speed amounts to. Thanks for your thoughts on my readings
hmmm
Ditch MS Internet explorer.
Opera Mini is the fastest. Will blow your friends iphone away.
On Rogers. radio 1.47.30
Ok , tried Opera Mini,,,and same speed test and Under Statistics (mentioned just slightly below your screen shot),, says that under 3G under Alltime statistics,, says 673 kbps, and also mentions 462 ms. My test shows Speed: 5988 kbps... I don't get it? How does the Alltime statistic which is 673 compare to 5988? They seem to both have the same kbps meassurement, yet worlds apart. What am I missing? Just added another capture at Testmyiphone.com tested using OperaMini again...so does this test mean anything to you in terms of speed, or is this a useless site? Most of these tests somehow determine that the unit that I am testing, is not an iPhone
Dunno
not to sound like a dummy, but all the gobbledegook doesn't mean that much to me.
My 3G is very fast- almost as fast as my broadband.
If I'm surfing, I use opera mini, or Opera 9.51. If I need to download files, I use Pocket IE because it handles rapidshare and megaupload better.
Opera just seems more responsive, IE takes too long to load pages and images.

AFAIK Opera Mini can not be used for bandwidth tests since it will report the bandwidth of the proxy server that they use to send the image you see in your phone. That's why it will always report a higher bandwidth than with PIE or Opera browser. That's why it seems always faster, since it is a dedicated server processing all the information and probably hooked to a T3 or something. Again, AFAIK...
Nanastas,,, how to you like the new Opera 9.51 compared to Opera 8.65,,is it faster? better for you? Just wondering if it is worth the move, seeing as it still is in Beta.
my 2 cents...
dgaud: that makes sense. But to be clear, opera mini is significantly faster in every way than PIE.
Stoker: I like it a lot. it is a big improvement. Loads a bit slower off the start, but the rendering engine and the reflow into paragraphs is really intuitive and works well.
Beta or not, I've been using the different leaked versions since they came, and it's still getting better.
Guys, Opera Mini does all its rendering remotely, so the speed tests done in Opera Mini are just a speed test to opera's servers.

Wifi signal strength comparison

with the i/o jelly bean 4.1 I had significantly less wifi signal strength than before. this fix http://goo.gl/LyXiV did improve the situation a little. now with 4.1.1. it is about as good as with the fix. still weaker than other smartphones i used (galaxy s2, galaxy s plus, nokia n9). they all performed much better in terms of wifi signal strength.
is anyone having some more insight into this? would love to see the signal improved as i can not use it in all rooms anymore. wifi dropping too frequently instead of keeping stable (even if on a low level). it is fluctuating too much.
I've actually noticed poor Wifi signal as well (not just with Jelly Bean but also before on .4). I just bought a small repeater to get around the weaker signal I seemed to be getting. :fingers-crossed:

Is something wrong with my WiFi?

The other day me and two of my friends were conducting a lil experiment to see which phone had the best wifi download speed using the speedtest.net app, one has the iphone 5 and the other a year old sony xperia phone. We all connected on the same router and when conducting the test they ended up having speeds of 32mbps!! While my phone only managed a measly 15mbps..feeling slighly embarrassed after bragging to them about how my phone is so much better then theirs we did the test again just to make sure it wasnt a fluke thing but nope we got the same results. My question is..is something wrong with my wifi..i mean ive never had a situation where its disconnected but ive noticed that the wifi icon does fluctuate from having full bars to no bars quite alot even if im right next to the router but i havent noticed the performance drop..im just baffled as to how such a amazing phone got beaten by the iphone and a phone thats older then mine with download speeds.

It looks like you have the dreaded Wifi problem. The fluctuation sounds all too familiar to me. Read the topic about this problem in the General section.
Don't worry man.
Forget the wifi issues cause by hardware, it is very rarely and is is very unlucky cases (other comes from user's mind)
For your matter, I have to face the same situation and in my case, I found that the issues comes from channel of the router. Normally, wifi router has many channel could be set with different frequency:
1- 2412 GHz
2- 2417
3- 2422
4- 2427
....
11- 2462
12 - 2467
13 - 2472
14 - 2477 GHz
The HOX work best in Wifi mode G / Channel 14 as I could easily got 54Mb/s. You could try again with other setup of router. Install wifi analyzer app from market and it could help you to find best channel for your HOX.
(remember to update your phone with latest ship rom).

what is the need to have 8mbs or more

why do you fellow user need to have a download speed of 8mbs or more for what to tether or something
cuz i use to be on boost 3g getting 3mbs download and i use to be fine with with now i got the note 2 from tmobile umlimited and i havent even use 2gb cuz im always on wifi
and with a 3mbs download you can watch video fine at least on my area

I haven't specifically tested 3Mbps for an HD video but I had read 5Mbps or more is generally advised for HD video. 5-8Mbps all looked the same in my limited HD video & other tests. Curious about 8Mbps as well..
I have access to very fast Wi-Fi >75% of the time as well but when I don't I still would like not to notice a significant difference in my general experiences..

I have 6 mbps internet at home... and yeah, 720p video is pretty much the best i can do... not to mention downloading stuff sucks at 6mbps
Also, a faster connection for me usually means better throughput since if there's high traffic, the speed can go down and i'll still be fine, or if i have bad signal, etc. I may not need the speed, but the wiggle room is good for non-optimal conditions.
Everything goes smoother with faster internet!!

First off now days upload speeds are just important as download speeds. especially with video conferencing. This is a sideline.
Lets say you went from a 4in screen device to a 5.5in screen device. How would you feel going back to the 4in screen device? This is the same with speeds. Once you enjoy higher speeds, then a lower speed is just annoying.
Now there are real reasons to need for speedier Internet connection. Videos are a good example. Faster speeds means that you can enjoy higher res video without video pausing by itself and other related problems rising. The is very true with HD videos.
Games that you interact with other players need the speed. And it is more faster downloading the 200+mb game files on a higher speed.
Video conferencing is a real need for speed on both directions. Galaxy Note 2 and many other devices you can use video conferencing like, Skype, Google+ hangout, Yahoo messenger (video), GoToMeeting, etc. And it takes huge bandwidth to do video conferencing. Especially having audio and/or whiteboard is part of the video conferencing you need the bandwidth.
But also the files, like HD video podcasts, large game files, movies, etc... are faster to download with larger bandwidth.
Quicker, faster, smoother, less time doing something so you can get on with your life do other things. That is the reason for larger bandwidth. Basically larger bandwidth allows the better usage of Galaxy Note 2 as it was designed for. If you have to ask this question, then this device maybe more than you need.

Tethering. That's it. Anything else is speedtest screenshot chest pounding.
Of course faster offers more flexibility & has more potential (I remember dial-up, dsl & FIOS 20/20 & now 75Mbps/35Mbps) but I think the OP question wants to explore the idea of thresholds for everyday tasks.
What is the lowest threshold to still be able to enjoy bandwidth hungry tasks like HD video, HD video conferencing etc as cost & coverage-connection-signal strength are real world variables?
5Mbps seems to be a threshold for 720p HD video, haven't tested a threshold for full 1080p HD yet. Do I notice a difference in FIOS 20/20 vs 75/35, usually not only when downloading - uploading huge files..
Personally I find 3G speeds much too slow but HSPA+ speeds usually meeting the threshold for HD video & most other things I do daily. Do I want the faster speeds & lower latency that LTE often offers, of course, but would you want to pay 2x-3x+ for it if HSPA+ generally meets your threshold ($30/mo T-Mobile plan vs AT&T/Verizon with data cap)?
Verizon may have the largest LTE coverage but where it isn't falls back to 3G or slower instead of having HSPA+ like AT&T or T-Mobile. I was surprised to see T-Mobile win in my neighborhood speeds tests in terms of speed consistency whether indoors or outdoors. Verizon did peak faster outdoors but varied more so the average was a bit lower than T-Mobile & shocked by how unusable it was indoors (often couldn't even run speedtests like with AT&T, Sprint <0.5 Mbps indoors <1.5 Mbps outdoors but my town is notorious for its tower permit process & subpar signal strength on AT&T & Verizon). T-Mobile was also usually 2-3x faster on upload speeds than other carriers that seemed capped at 1Mbps in my neighborhood tests.
I still would like to run more speedtests on T-Mobile in more areas I frequent but since I have access to ultrafast Wi-Fi most of the time not sure I can find a better deal than T-Mobile's $30/mo plan (unless it ultimately proves inadequate in extended tests).

I don't notice much difference between areas I get 18mbps and 6-8mbps on HSPA. But if this is a veiled jab at LTE, LTE benefits from much better C-plane to U-plane latency. In laymans terms going from idle to active latency. This gives LTE that almost instant feel when you click on a link for a web page as the radio goes from idle to active much faster.

Improve GPS signal strenght

Is there any way to improve GPS signal once it's locked in to sattelites? Lately it has been happening to me that Nexus randomly drops signal when I run under trees and it's really annoying.

gps signal is weak when there are clouds , specially in overcast its weak, since our gnex doesnt have GLONASS , its weaker compared to the newer devices
to me gnex is weaker then any of my older GPS equipped devices.
I've tried every tweak to improve lock up speed, but it still sucks badly

lol what you talking about ? i get a gps lock in less than 12 seconds ,when you turn of Agps ,its a different story , it takes a bout 3 minutes
Sygic Locks with me instantly if the weather is clear and mobile data "3G" is enabled ,but takes 2 to 4 min. if offline
I think any tweak i used affects only when i have internet and doesn't make any difference when offline
My GNEX takes a whole lot longer to find satellites compared to my iPad 2 with all location aids turned on. And while driving, it would occasionaly lose the GPS signal. Which is frustrating and makes me lose a turn..
Does the GPS have issues connecting even after a reboot? I remember way back in my HTC Evo 4G days, if I had up time of nearly 3-4 weeks, I would start having issues connecting to satellites. A reboot would clear it right up. I usually reboot my Galaxy Nexus every other day, and I never have GPS issues, unless I'm in a concrete/rebar building..
