with the i/o jelly bean 4.1 I had significantly less wifi signal strength than before. this fix http://goo.gl/LyXiV did improve the situation a little. now with 4.1.1. it is about as good as with the fix. still weaker than other smartphones i used (galaxy s2, galaxy s plus, nokia n9). they all performed much better in terms of wifi signal strength.
is anyone having some more insight into this? would love to see the signal improved as i can not use it in all rooms anymore. wifi dropping too frequently instead of keeping stable (even if on a low level). it is fluctuating too much.
I've actually noticed poor Wifi signal as well (not just with Jelly Bean but also before on .4). I just bought a small repeater to get around the weaker signal I seemed to be getting. :fingers-crossed:

What are you using to measure your wifi signal level?
i dont have this problem

Has anyone noticed far worse wifi performance on their phone since the stock ICS update?
It always maintains a connection but the bandwidth, when tested, is only around 3-4mbps when it has 2 or 3 bars but 19mbps when full bars.
Now, before ICS even if i had 1 or 2 bars it would still get full bandwidth out of my wifi...seems to be a problem on any wifi network i try out...
anyone else seeing similar issues?
Yes. On ICS I was getting 3-4MB/s on GB I get 24-25.
I've noticed my wifi dropping out a lot more than it used to in low signal areas. haven't measured speed though
same thing here... WiFi is horrid on ICS!
WiFi calling on GB was great, since the ICS update I end up having to turn WiFi off in order to make calls 90% of the time. Hopefully they will fix it...
I'm having bad Wifi connectivity as well
And in turn my Wifi calling is dropping a lot.
Yes my wifi blows since the update.
I maybe mistaken, but I'm never wrong.
I have to admit that so far my wifi experience with stock ICS has been fair at best, nothing like how it was on GB. Signal strength is noticeably weaker even when the device is out of it's case. I've used an app called Network Signal Info ( de.android.telnet ) and it's solid in taking signal measurements.

Even I have faced the wifi freeze issue....
need to reboot and then it works fine....

Being that I completely rely on wifi calling, I am for one glad I did NOT upgrade to ICS.
wifi signal is down a bit. Not much. Wifi calling works fine.
Speeds are normal... 49 down and 7 up here.
I don't see it as a huge let down. Having ics is well worth that one minor issue.

If I don't miss remember upon upgrade to JB on my yakyu device, my GN experiences a very low signal from any wifi APs, testing with different android devices from friends, my GN measures the weakest wifi signal of them all, is this a problem with the device itself, had anyone experience anything similar?
Thanks in advance
For me, the measured signal _seems_ to be worse then on ICS (it shows less bars). Would need to check with WiFi Analyzer or similiar but TBH, I didn't notice connectivity problems compared to ICS.
I do here, and the problem as I see it is not the wifi signal/power itself is the quality/sensitivity on the GN receiver, since other devices measures at least one or two bars where mine don't.
And to this date, I keep noticing more and more problems in the JB GN, shouldn't the so-called Google flagship device have more updates/corrections/support from google itself? I'm starting to regret having bought this device.

Not everyone has this issue. My WiFi signal strength, connection quality, connection stability, and speeds all remained the same on 4.1.1.

Even since JB, my WiFi signal is terrible. In my bedroom, my laptop gets 4 bars, my nexus gets 1. 10 feet from the router I get 3 bars. Is there s fix for this? I've searched and I can't find one.

I too get crappy wifi reception but I can't totally blame Jellybean for it. When I got my Gnex JB just came out so i did not have a lot of time to do a before and after comparison.
I just put a second router in my livingroom to help and sitting less than 10 feet I only get 3 bars on the phone. I hope we are not the only ones with this problem.
Even my GNEX has a bad reception ... I have the impression that it was better with ICS. But I would never go back. I subscribe maybe jumping out of a solution ...
I got the same problem with my GNex. No way to solve it and just let it to be what it is.
Which ROM's are you on? I'm using CM10 and have no problems with Wi-Fi signal in my apartment. Are you using 2.5 GHz or 5 GHz?
Swype'ed on my CM10 Galaxy Nexus
I am using Maddoggin's Jelly Bean Rom which was built from stock and not CM10, some people are saying that the kernel is responsible for the wifi and that the radios only handle the cellular and LTE signals hmmmm. His ROM is using the stock kernel so I may try flashing a different one to see if this helps or try different ROM altogether.
Sometimes when the phone is on the table in sleep mode, if I turn it on it will have like three or maybe four bars of wifi for a second then it drops down to two or one. Holding the phone in landscape seems to help with reception too. Maybe this is due to placement of the wifi antenna?
I have two Netgear routers in my house and I belive they are 2.4 Ghz, I have them on different channels so the signals do not overlap.
There maybe an off chance that the phone could be defective but before I head over to the Sprint store I need to do a little more investigating.
I've noticed something interesting while using my Galaxy Nexus in different cities.
I frequently spend time in both Calgary, Alberta and Victoria, BC. What I've noticed is the battery life of my phone is great in Calgary, and horrible in Victoria. With no changes to apps or roms or modems, etc.
Anyone else notice something like this? I can only assume, perhaps, the mobile network in Victoria is poor, leading to reception problems, therefore increased battery consumption?
Anyone else have any ideas or input?
Thanks in advance.

My battery life will vary widely depending on the level of service I get. Even if I'm showing 1-2 bars, my battery drops much quicker.

This is an interesting read in general but if you skip down to "Airplane Mode Toggle" talks about how toggling the airplane mode will reconnect to the best possible tower and why it may not have been initially.

You are completely correct in your hypothesis. Signal reception does directly impact battery consumption
A misconception among smartphone users is that bars are a good representation of signal. While often times the reading is accurate, bars are just a GUI element. The best way to check your signal is by going into settings -> about -> status and looking at the Signal strength in dBm. The higher the number, the poorer your signal and vice versa. Excellent signal would be around ~60dBm whilst poor would be in the ~120dBm ranges, give or take a few.

I used my nexus this past summer in Europe and I found my battery died extremely quickly. The majority of places where I used my phone were concrete buildings which meant signal strength was fairly weak and using data with weak signal is a bad combination for battery life.

I think it also has to do with the building you are in. My apartment has lots of concrete walls and it seems to cause dead zones in it. My work building has wrap around floor to ceiling glass which makes my cell reception much better.

Hi, noticing that my 5x signal indicator will drop to the equivalent of zero bars -110 dBm 99asu. This is happening in my apartment that is known to have bad reception. My old note 3 always had problems, my gf's oneplus one on tmobile does the same thing. So I understand that my apartment isn't the best for maintaining good reception.
I did think however that me losing reception on my note 3 was due to lack of updating my phone and also being on a crappy ROM. I believed my gf's issues were just do the poor quality control of oneplus. I figured this was the issue after trying out the Moto X pure (2015) in my apartment recently, and it hasn't dropped signal like any of the phones mentioned above. So my experience with Moto X made me think that other phones were just faulty/old.
Then I got the nexus 5x to try out, and I started to experience the exact same loss of signal as the note 3 and oneplus. I've fiddled with APN settings--matched them exactly to the moto pure and so on--and flashed to newest system image, but still experienced that connection loss.
In addition to this, while driving around I noticed that the 5x was often dropping to 3g and taking a while to get back to LTE. While trying out the Moto X, I didn't notice this at all. And after comparing the cellular network signal graph in the battery section, my observations matched. The moto x had way better reception throughout the day.
My question then is, is anyone else noticing/having this issue? Are nexus phones known for having poor radios/signal? Any suggestions? Should I try returning and buying another? RMA?
I like the 5x much more than the pure (not having any battery issue), but it seems silly to keep it if its a worse functioning phone.
What build number are you on it seems like the current build is fixing this issue for people. I'm gonna bet your on MDA89E which is not the newest build.
I'm on mdb80i. I was on build you mentioned, and thought flashing newest would fix my problem but it didn't.
On another note, I tried surfing web while supposedly having no bars (~115dBm 99 asu) and websites loaded just fine. I also tried calling while supposedly had no signal but I was able to get call through. So not sure what is going on when losing bars
