reception issue (on verizon?) dropping signal - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, noticing that my 5x signal indicator will drop to the equivalent of zero bars -110 dBm 99asu. This is happening in my apartment that is known to have bad reception. My old note 3 always had problems, my gf's oneplus one on tmobile does the same thing. So I understand that my apartment isn't the best for maintaining good reception.
I did think however that me losing reception on my note 3 was due to lack of updating my phone and also being on a crappy ROM. I believed my gf's issues were just do the poor quality control of oneplus. I figured this was the issue after trying out the Moto X pure (2015) in my apartment recently, and it hasn't dropped signal like any of the phones mentioned above. So my experience with Moto X made me think that other phones were just faulty/old.
Then I got the nexus 5x to try out, and I started to experience the exact same loss of signal as the note 3 and oneplus. I've fiddled with APN settings--matched them exactly to the moto pure and so on--and flashed to newest system image, but still experienced that connection loss.
In addition to this, while driving around I noticed that the 5x was often dropping to 3g and taking a while to get back to LTE. While trying out the Moto X, I didn't notice this at all. And after comparing the cellular network signal graph in the battery section, my observations matched. The moto x had way better reception throughout the day.
My question then is, is anyone else noticing/having this issue? Are nexus phones known for having poor radios/signal? Any suggestions? Should I try returning and buying another? RMA?
I like the 5x much more than the pure (not having any battery issue), but it seems silly to keep it if its a worse functioning phone.

What build number are you on it seems like the current build is fixing this issue for people. I'm gonna bet your on MDA89E which is not the newest build.

I'm on mdb80i. I was on build you mentioned, and thought flashing newest would fix my problem but it didn't.
On another note, I tried surfing web while supposedly having no bars (~115dBm 99 asu) and websites loaded just fine. I also tried calling while supposedly had no signal but I was able to get call through. So not sure what is going on when losing bars

[Q] Galaxy Nexus Signal degrading consistently from 4.0.2 through 4.1

Has anybody else experienced a loss in overall signal quality moving through to more recent firmwares? I remember my signal used to be great when I pulled the phone out of the box just over a month ago, and now its almost total crap.
I'm running vanilla 4.1, not rooted or anything. I did flash the very latest radio to see if it would help but its about the same (XXLF1).
I'm using the US GSM Unlocked Nexus, with AT&T.

Same here. Could it be hw problem? A lot of people in this thread are saying that when they get their replacement phone everything went fine...
What bother me is the fact that in the beginning it was working fine.... so could it be really an hw detect appearing after a short time??
I am not having luck with Android devices... On my phone the signal strength varies wildly and I get drop outs in places I never did had any issues with my iPhone. To be honest with you there seems to be a problem with the thing switching between towers, it just hangs on to one tower for way too long and then signal drops, then 200m down the road it's back to 3 or 4 bars

[Q] VZW Extremely poor CDMA/LTE performance (Vicious JB 4.1 v5)

I'm at a loss here, but I know something is wrong for sure. I'm familiar with the low signal strength 'problem' on LTE networks as described at rootzwiki's thread entitled "This is why your Verizon Nexus signal "sucks" " I do not understand it inside and out, but I know enough to be at least 80% sure that this is not my issue. That thread describes a low signal strength, as in the dBm, but my problem is actual performance. I'm not comparing numbers (at least not on LTE networks), but results.
The problem is pretty bad, and pretty consistent. Without fail, my signal strength will be butchered, and with it data and even voice/text service will be unreliable or non existent inside any building. Not just some buildings, but any building. If I'm in a 4G area, I almost always lose the 4G, and it's switched to 3G with very poor performance (even for 3G standards). If I don't loose the 4G, the speed test results are horrid. I've had several cases where inside a building I still have 4G but the speeds might be 500-700 Kbps down/up or even worse, but when I step outside into the parking lot, 10-15 Mbps down 5-15 Mbps up. I realize structures absorb wireless signals and sometimes it can be pretty bad, but this is too much and too frequent to just be normal wireless signal degradation. It also doesn't seem to be the area because I've traveled through these areas before with my droid charge and I've never experienced issues anywhere close to this bad with my charge.
Some examples; the first time I noticed it was in the Greensboro, NC 4G area. Specifically at the Travel Centers of America about 10 miles east of the greensboro's border. When I first pulled into the truck stop (I drive a strait truck with a sleeper) I was pissed because my phone was on 3G, and I looked this area up before I came here on verizon's detailed 4G coverage map. This very truck stop was sitting in a dark maroon 4G area, NOT an extended 4G area. So I was angry, but I figured that there was an issue with the network, or the storm coming through was causing problems. Later the storm passed and I noticed (while walking back to my truck) that I was getting a strong 4G signal and good speeds, 5-10 Mbps down and 5 ish up. But as I sat back in even just the driver seat the signal strength dropped, and so did the speeds. I did a lot of tests later outside. I was performing speed tests at different locations all over the parking lot and I noticed the closer I got to the trucks, the poorer the performance. When I was inside my truck, and back in the sleeper, 4G was gone completely, taken over by a very poor 3G signal with slow speeds. I found that if I had my phone mounted on the windshield I was able to get reasonable 4G speeds, but still only a fraction of what I was able to get outside in the parking lot.
Another similar case happened in the Washington DC area at a walmart (Landover, MD). This time the 4G stuck even in the sleeper, but speeds were 2-3 Mbps down and about 700 Kbps up. While outside, however, 15 Mbps down and up.
Here I sit at another truck stop. This time, however, I'm in an extended 4G area (which of course means I have 3G) and I'm comparing my 3G signal strength to my Charge's signal strength. I know what I said earlier, but from what I understand about that "issue", gingerbread phones and earlier would give the CDMA signal strength because they couldn't read the 4G signal strength, but ICS and later can and so it displays the LTE signal strength. So wouldn't that mean that if you are in a 3G area, you can, in fact, accurately compare signal strength since they should both be displaying the CDMA signal strength? If that's the case, then what I'm getting is -100 dBm on my Galaxy Nexus and -87 dBm on my charge.
Something is most definitely wrong with my phone, but I don't know if it has anything to do with the Vicious JB stock rom I installed or not.
Vicious JellyBean 4.1 V5 is the version I installed, and I realize now that I did not install the latest (4.1.1 V1) but nonetheless I could not see it reported anywhere in the changelog, or any of the replies to the thread that there were very noticeable problems with the radio performance. I'm just at a loss and I really hope someone's reading this going "ah, I know exactly what that problem is". I've noticed some strange data problems as well. I've only had my nexus for 3 days. The first thing I did was throw a JB ROM (actually, about 9 of them to try them all out) on the device. (Vicious was one of them) What I noticed was that pretty consistently, about 5-10 minutes after the flash, my phone would go from having 4 bars of LTE to no signal at all. My connection would drop completely. Although I didn't figure this out until the latter flashes, I did remember having connection issues when I tried going to the play store or the internet on all the ROMs. I'd have to switch of LTE, and then I'd start working again. At first I just figured that I'm in some sort of LTE dead zone or something. But it seemed strange that my connection would drop completely and I couldn't get it back for 30-60 seconds.
SO, this morning I took my device back to stock. Unrooted ICS from Verizon. And although I wasn't at home for more than a minute to do testing, it appears that my connection problems have gone away. So I'm wondering if it is a radio issue for JB roms. All that to say that I don't think your problem is just the vicious rom. If you wouldn't mind, I'd suggest you trying another ROM and seeing if you have the same issues.
I figure it could be a few things for my own issues, which could be similar to yours:
1. Toro JB roms just have radio issues. (Seems like more people would be clamoring on this forum though if that were true, and I haven't seen any other than you)
2. I have a bad piece of hardware. (Running my stock ICS rom should shake that out.)
3. I live in a verizon dead zone and will experience drops no matter what ROM I use. (Again, stock ICS should shake that out for me.)
4. Gnex has inferior radio hardware, and there is nothing to be done about it. (Doesn't seem likely.)
ALL that to say that, while I don't have an answer for you, I seem to be experiencing similar problems, and I'm trying to figure it out too.
I'll keep you updated as I hone in on a culprit of my problems. (IF I can)

You say "the AOSP" version that was released, but what exactly does AOSP mean? I know what it stands for, Android Open Source Project, but every jelly bean rom I've seen (or most) has AOSP in it and I guess I don't grasp it's actual meaning.
The only thing I know for sure is that I want stock stock stockity stock stock! When devs build roms they tend to always have some sort of a bug or two, and I just never feel like they are stable enough. So I want as stock as I can get! Which is why I installed Vicious Stock JB.
I just really don't know though...I know the nexus apparently has radio problems anyway, but...I guess I can just try the latest roms and see what happens. Are there any radios that I can install maybe that would fix this? :\

Thank you kindly sir, and I will give a few other roms a shot just to see what I can find out and report back!
I tried flashing a few different roms; Liquid TORO Alpha 6, Vicious CM10 Toro, and Vicious JB 4.1.1 v1. All three of them as soon as the phone booted up showed the exact same poor 3G signal quality in the back sleeper while I'm in a dark maroon 4G area. Although I don't think I did a proper rom installation. They roms definitely installed, but it upgraded and installed over what I had...which I didn't realize it would do at all. I'll try doing it properly rom installation with a JB toro rom and then I'm going back to stock ICS to see what it looks like. I'm actually, right now, back at the truck stop that I originally noticed this problem. I'll post back.
I tried flashing back to stock 4.0.4 ICS build with the most recent radios, then I tried EK06 EK05 radios. It was the same across the board. No matter what rom/radios i use, the signal quality was the same. I lost service completely inside the building and in the sleeper it drops to 3G with incredibly poor signal quality :\ -100 dBm -120 dBm I'm going to try and get a new SIM card. if that doesn't solve it...then I guess it's time to look for a new phone :\
It seems like the developers are in a holding pattern until new radios are leaked. If it's that bad, there's no real harm in sticking w/ ICS until we get radios. Some really sweet things have been done by the community in the meantime.

well I already had vicious 4.1 installed with my apps and all that stuff and it's the same across the board. So I'll be sticking with this until something pops up I guess :\ I'm still definitely going to check about getting a new SIM card; it's the only option, short of another phone, that I can try at this poing. -shrugs- :\

WiFi Signal level

If I don't miss remember upon upgrade to JB on my yakyu device, my GN experiences a very low signal from any wifi APs, testing with different android devices from friends, my GN measures the weakest wifi signal of them all, is this a problem with the device itself, had anyone experience anything similar?

For me, the measured signal _seems_ to be worse then on ICS (it shows less bars). Would need to check with WiFi Analyzer or similiar but TBH, I didn't notice connectivity problems compared to ICS.
I do here, and the problem as I see it is not the wifi signal/power itself is the quality/sensitivity on the GN receiver, since other devices measures at least one or two bars where mine don't.
And to this date, I keep noticing more and more problems in the JB GN, shouldn't the so-called Google flagship device have more updates/corrections/support from google itself? I'm starting to regret having bought this device.

Not everyone has this issue. My WiFi signal strength, connection quality, connection stability, and speeds all remained the same on 4.1.1.

[Q] T-Mobile HTC M8 Data Connectivity Issues.

I noticed that I have to reset the phone allot. If I am in an area with no reception for a while then go back to an area with reception it wont automatically reconnect and the LTE stays off sometimes. I have to reboot the phone.
The same problem is with signal strength too, it will not reconnect automatically sometimes. My 4G LTE does this allot. It does become annoying. I am afraid to get another phone in fear it will be worse then this one. I already had to exchange my phone and am running out of exchange days. (14 day period)
My first M8 I got on June 30 was slow, incredibly laggy and very buggy to the point it was nearly unusable. That first M8 had a mind of it's own. Maybe it was the first gen, I do not know. This replacement phone has been good to me minus the fact it sometimes drops calls and gets SUPER warm RANDOMLY even when ALL the apps are closed. The new phone is MUCH faster with the same settings and runs much smoother.
These connection issues are bugging the hell out of me, my iPhone never had this problem and would always reconnect fast. I do not like the S5 and I like the HTC but I do wonder about it's quality control and the quality of the internal components inside.
I hope its not hardware. I hope an update fixes the issue I'm constantly restarting.

good day - i have not had any of these issues with the m8 at all. has been snappy since day one. i have had little to no connectivity issues either. i have gone from way out in the country back into coverage, 2g snaps on immediately, then 3g, then closer to the city, 4g. my wife and i have a family plan and both devices switch within seconds of each other. different phone, she has the g2 but zero connectivity issues there too. we are in northern IL / Chicago market so it might be different. might be a dud phone? i do not think it has to do with hardware quality though. i went from an htc incredible that i had to replace a speaker in after 10 months but had no other issues with, to an incredible 2 that i had 0 issues with, to a S3 that was awesome, to a note 3 that was great, to the m8 which has been wonderful. my wife went from a blackberry that was crazy solid, to a S4 that was total CRAP, to the G2 which is amazing. if you can i would try and get a new one?

Hey, thank you for the response.
I went to T-Mobile today and they Factory Reset my phone.
I left to mobile and they told me to come back within 24 hours there is a failure
I ended up having a buggy phone with artifacts and flashes similar to an overclocked GPU. T-Mobile told me it might fix the phone.
Tomorrow, I am going back for my 2nd replacement. I like this phone, it works much better then my first phone but the connection problems are extreme and it starting to feel like faulty hardware. My first phone was full of lag, it was factory reset and lagged on the machine as well. The machine(a laptop) even had to be restarted.
Some guy had same issue and replacing sim card fix it. You should give it a try

I read (in the note 3 forums i think) that data dropouts were an inherent problem in android 4.4.2, and the code was fixed in version 4.4.3. Don't know if it applies to this phone as well, but if its an android system problem it could be.

Android 10 Signal Strength

Didn't see a thread covering this, so I figured I'd start one.
One issue that has plagued my Pixel 2XL is severely diminished LTE signal strength on Android 10. I first encountered this on beta 5, and again on beta 6. My signal dbm's were 10-15 less than on Pie, and the signal indicator was rarely, if ever, above 1 bar. My signal would fluctuate wildly based on location, and would rarely hold steady. Speed tests confirmed things. Extremely frustrating. It was such a problem that I eventually opted out of the beta program and rolled back to Pie before the official release of Android 10. Since then my signal strength has returned to normal and been steady and solid. I have not updated to official Android 10 yet, and keep hoping that this issue will be resolved through a monthly security patch. I am having this issue on my 2XL, on AT&T, however this issue persists across devices and carriers, and doesn't seem to discriminate. As with most things though, there are plenty of folks who say they are not effected by this in the least.
So my question here is this:
Has anyone noticed a decrease in signal strength on Android 10 on the Pixel 2XL?
LTE? 3G? WiFi?
Fluctuating signal? Dropped calls? Poor data speeds?
I'd really love to update to 10, and the latest December patch, but am extremely hesitant to do so, based on what I have personally experienced and read in the above threads.

I haven't had any issues with LTE signal as you described, but I have had problems with WiFi signal regularly dropping. After some research, I found that the issue was with Android and my router which puts out a 5ghz and 2.4ghz signal - Android 10 would drop the signal when switching between the two. My solution for home was to turn off the 5ghz channel on my router and my issues with WiFi went away.
I don't use WiFi away from home frequently enough to see if this signal issue has persisted on other connections, hoping for a fix in the December security patch.
I am running Android 10, rooted with Magisk. Clean installed about two weeks ago and the issue was apparent from the get-go. Never had anything like this in Pie.
I can't say for sure on the LTE side as I never checked numbers prior to updating to A10B5, however signal strength barely shows on the indicator. Tower is 4 blocks away. My wifi is terrible and there appear many variations across Pixels. No solutions here but appears to be a widespread problem. FYI.

UPDATE:
Last night, I received and flashed the OTA update. I went into my home route and turned on the 5ghz channel again and the WiFi issue immediately returned for me. So, sadly no fix in the December patch and at least in my experience, this is limited to 5ghz connections. For now, I've reverted by home WiFi back to 2.4ghz and it's working fine.

Just out of curiosity, how is your LTE signal strength on the December update? Dbm's and signal bars appear to be normal? Any dropped calls or slower than usual data speeds?
The WiFi issue sucks, but at least it can be worked around for now. There is no substituting for poor signal and connectivity though, and that is still a deal breaker for me moving forward.

If there has been a change with my LTE signal strength, I certainly don't notice it. I haven't had any dropped calls or slow data speeds.

Thanks, good to know. Not to beat a dead horse here, but in general, do you notice less signal bars on 10 than previously on Pie? On the betas, I rarely showed more than 1 bar at any given time, and dbm's were less across the board as well. Frustrating. I realize bars don't mean everything, obviously, and the only way to truly measure signal strength is by looking at the actual dbm's. Maybe something in the Android 10 code changed the way signal bars are calculated relative to dbm's?

No, I haven't noticed a change in bars or dbm's since the update. I live in the city and so my service signal has always been strong - no change since upgrading to 10. I should note that I didn't update to 10 until about a week or so ago and when I did, I did a clean flash and then rooted with Magisk. I have since updated to the December security patch, again with no change to my cellular signal.

Thanks, appreciate the responses. It's actually good to hear that things are normal on your end. Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in the complaints, and in the process not hear about those who have no issues at all. So strange how this bug seems to randomly effect people, across carriers and various Pixel devices. Some are majorly effected, some not at all. Would love to update, but it's a roll of the dice that I'm not sure I'm willing to take.
I’m wondering, why can’t/don’t you merely update to 10, try it out and see how things go for about a week, and if it’s not a good experience for you, merely roll-back using the Full Factory Pie/9 image?
In any case, I am under Verizon and haven’t noticed any lowering of network signal or performance. I do experience some need to re-initialize the wifi – but, to be fair, I had that issue in Pie – but maybe not as frequent.
Either way, many/most have a good enough positive experience that it’s simply at least worth a try; at least on a temporary basis. But, again either way, good luck and hope this helps…

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it. I am probably one of the few Pixel owners out there who are still running completely stock and unrooted, and I also never bothered to unlock the bootloader. So needless to say, having the ability/option to flash back to the factory image for PIe, should things go sideways, would take some work. I'll probably update at some point, but I have had literally zero issues on PIe. It runs flawlessly for me, and always has, so the thought of introducing potential problems makes me a bit hesitant. Just wanted to try to see how widespread this signal issue was., that's all.
