Improve GPS signal strenght - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Is there any way to improve GPS signal once it's locked in to sattelites? Lately it has been happening to me that Nexus randomly drops signal when I run under trees and it's really annoying.

gps signal is weak when there are clouds , specially in overcast its weak, since our gnex doesnt have GLONASS , its weaker compared to the newer devices

to me gnex is weaker then any of my older GPS equipped devices.
I've tried every tweak to improve lock up speed, but it still sucks badly

lol what you talking about ? i get a gps lock in less than 12 seconds ,when you turn of Agps ,its a different story , it takes a bout 3 minutes

Sygic Locks with me instantly if the weather is clear and mobile data "3G" is enabled ,but takes 2 to 4 min. if offline
I think any tweak i used affects only when i have internet and doesn't make any difference when offline

My GNEX takes a whole lot longer to find satellites compared to my iPad 2 with all location aids turned on. And while driving, it would occasionaly lose the GPS signal. Which is frustrating and makes me lose a turn..

Does the GPS have issues connecting even after a reboot? I remember way back in my HTC Evo 4G days, if I had up time of nearly 3-4 weeks, I would start having issues connecting to satellites. A reboot would clear it right up. I usually reboot my Galaxy Nexus every other day, and I never have GPS issues, unless I'm in a concrete/rebar building..

How is the GPS? I grabbed the Droid RAZR during the extended return period and I must say, the GPS is amazing! I use GPS a lot so that's very important to me.

GPS is fantastic. By far the best i have seen on a smartphone to date (I'm making a comparison between the Desire HD, SGS2, Desire & iPhone)
GPS connects in between 2 & 5 seconds and i have not had a dropped signal using Navigator.
My 2 cents worth....
I agree. No issues with GPS. locked to within 40 meters from inside a restaurant and once out side got a much closer lock right away. Tested using GPS Status and Google Maps.
Does the nexus use the glonass satellites like the galaxy note? Could someone please run GPS test or something similar and see if it uses sats in the 70's range, as well as the regular 1 - 24.
Not that I can tell:
Great to hear, I was concerned because the gs2 has a very lame GPS connection

My Nexus has a much better GPS than my N900 or HTC Kaiser, although it seems to have difficulty indoors AND you have to enable the wifi to get a better signal putting further strain on the battery.
It also adds almost an extra km to my 13.7 (now 14.5) daily commute. Is this like the 'measuring the coastline of Britain' fractal paradox?
Any stand alone GPS navigation app works?
I am not talking about Google Maps, because that is obvious.
But, apps like Sygic 11.2.x, CoPilot, etc.
Sygic doesnt seem to. Please update my app compatibilty thread with others you find not working!
Want to hear more..
I am using Vibrant and it is very frustrating...
And I heard SGSII is not good either...
I don't know if I trust Samsung anymore
I read somewhere it uses the barometer(not thermometer ) to add another dimension to the localisation process.

Is that using just pure GPS or A-GPS?
This alone would get me to upgrade from Nexus S.
How's the GPS inside a partially obstructed view like a bus or something? My Nexus S takes like 2-5 mins.
NOTE: I don't have a data plan, so not using A-GPS but pure GPS
Hopefully this isn't a pain for anyone, but could one of you fine European gentlemen with Nexus' do me a favor?
Go outside, download GPS STATUS & Toolbox (I want to see accuracy of Meters, not feet) and post a screenshot.
Outside of my house, my Samsung Droid Charge will NEVER lock below 5 meters, while my Thunderbolt and Incredible with lock to 1 or 2.
You may ask, what's the big deal?
Well, it's the difference between Google Maps knowing I'm at my house, or my neighbors.
Thanks!
Can anyone please test if the GPS is usable when data network(HSPA) is disabled, like in Flight Mode with GPS enabled?
Thanks!

I'll try again tomorrow for u dude, it locks super quick which is pretty good for me
I guess if it locks really quickly I can be satisfied with that. I honestly feel that there is something wrong with Samsung's GPS chips and rather than trying to fix it, they added a barometer to help

I second this.
And if you have a Nexus S, can you please compare your results.
I'm curious if new gps chip and/or barometer speeds it up.

Weak gps signal

I had to drive over 200 miles to my destination yesterday and my Nexus lost gps signal probably over 40% of the time. Very frustrating and it caused me to miss a few turns.
My GN's gps doesn't seem to have any problem now that it got signal in a snap and never lost any signal
Mine has always been solid. Quick locks that don't fail.
Quite the change from my old g2x.

Yes I have noticed this as well, but it is historically par for the course for Samsung. My only gripe about the Galaxy Nexus is the GPS. Sometimes it is quick (as in, on par with every other major manufacturer out there), but most of the time it is not. It averages 4-5x the amount of time it takes my Atrix or N1 to get a lock sitting side-by-side, and the lock it gets is less secure and about half as accurate as the other two.
The other side of the coin however, is that this is a HUGE improvement for Samsung, as the Galaxy S phones released last year were atrocious when it came to GPS.
For me the GPS is bearable, and patiently functional, but disappointing.
I have the same problem. My GN lost the GPS signal.
There are different radios available here at xda. Maybe those with issues could try updating radio.
I had some 3g connection issues, so tried different radios, but always GPS was fine.

That might work... Like I said, mine is tolerable and gets the job done, but it is mildly annoying coming from (and being used to) devices with nearly instant GPS lock to ~ 2m, and now having to wait (even a little) for a ~5m lock...
It's just one of those things where you have such a perfect phone, then you go to use something and it works, but you know there is something more efficient on a "worse" performing (overall) device...
i have the same problem with mine. Never experienced such weak signal since sirf star III chips were released years ago =(
Takes ages to get signal, never gives a better precision than 20m, etc
Very disapointing
The Droid RAZR has a great GPS so I'm kind of afraid that the Galaxy Nexus is going to have a weak one. I too sufferers through the Galaxy S GPS debacle. Could never rely on that GPS. Razr is VERY solid.

Considering my last phone was a Samsung Vibrant, the Nexus GPS is a big improvement. LOL
My GPS has been solid on my GNexus - much better than my Galaxy S. My radio is I9250XXKK1
same, my GPS signal is super solid on the Nexus
I'm coming from the Galaxy S2 as well, where i used to get "pretty" quick lock times, but the lock would SOMETIME go wonky around tall buildings (downtown core) and usually would take a bit to lock to 10m
but on the Nexus im getting SUPER fast locks (5 seconds or less) and always around 5m from my location
i think its super great, and although the S2 was good, the nexus is an even bigger improvement - i'm wondering if the barometer really makes that big of a difference
I do edit the gps.conf file for NTP servers though (i change mine to the canada instead of north america)
I removed the north america server and added:
server 0.ca.pool.ntp.org
server 1.ca.pool.ntp.org
server 2.ca.pool.ntp.org
server 3.ca.pool.ntp.org
so you can give that a try
the NTP servers can be found here: http://www.pool.ntp.org/zone/north-america
remember to reboot your device after editing the gps.conf file
I'm having similar issues; losing signal or the Maps application doesn't update. For example, the blue arrow signals that I still have lock but it's signalling that my GPS location is still at a round about like half a mile back....
I was also waiting in traffic today and the GPS put me 100 yards down a road to my right. I know GPS can sometimes get your direction wrong when at a cross roads, but this side road wasn't any where near me in comparison.
I've edited my gps.conf which still has not rectified the above issue and I also have WiFi enabled as this does aid location.
I'm going to do a TB and attempt flashing the latest Google image as my phone will not apply the update OTA for some reason. Maybe this might help
What is it with Samsung and crap GPS; my SII was flaky at times where as my old HTC Desire was much better when it came to GPS.
What radio is installed on your device? There are currently several versions out there, the default being XXKK1 (I have UGKK7 on Virgin Mobile Canada). Open build.prop, or install 'Android Info' to verify. When you flash the stock factory image, try to flash the default radio as well (provided by Google). If your current radio is already XXKK1, then try flashing a different one. Some can be found in the Development forum. Your GPS may work better, since the radio variants are optimized for different carrier/region configurations.

I was driving several miles with GPS cutting in and out, this only happened one day so far though. It was frustrating then though, went driving in circles in traffic for about 10 mins.
Never had this kind of issue with GPS taking that long on any device before
My GN gps has been solid and spot on. I use gps (google maps) almost daily on my commute and it has worked like a stand alone gps! My previous SGS Vibrant and SGS2 had really bad gps.. and i was afraid Samsung would ruin the GN. But thank God the gps works as it should!
My Sprint Galaxy SII is horrible. But my T-Mobile Nexus S is fine and so was my Nexus One. I'm debating if I should go with the Razr if the GPS on the GN is lame as the SII.
The only way the phone finds my location is by Wi-Fi and mobile networks. My GPS isn't working. Sigh.
Check out the apps GPS Test and GPS Status. If you GPS still doesn't respond when standing outside in a clear field with Wi-fi/Mobile networks supporting you need to bring it to a shop and have it checked out.
This is how it started for the Galaxy S
OK, I remember my history clearly because this is how I got burned by the Galaxy S. There were a few reports of bad GPS before it turned into a firestorm. And then lots of apologists saying, "hey it works OK" or, "I don't care, GPS doesn't matter to me". Sorry, the GPS was never functional on that device.
I currently have a GSM Galaxy Nexus import on order but I might be turning that shipment based on these these early reports. I am not taking any chances and getting screwed again by Samsung again without GPS.
And I'm not too happy about the various jackyou builds either. I wanted a phone that was finally supported by Google without having to flash the thing. Grr.

How is the GPS on this beast?

Can you lucky bastards with one of these in hand post some GPS test screen shots please? And overall GPS performance ....I'm an owner of a vibrant and need a working navigation phone ...also does vzw let u use Google maps or is there some fee for using GPS?
Thanks

Navigation is great. It takes about 30-45 seconds initially to figure out its compass direction and then it's perfect from there.

Apple hand picked their hardware for a reason. Android devices have to follow in line with "But are there drivers for Android yet? If so, we'll just go with this GPS module."
Plus, ICS should be a lot quicker polling for GPS anyways. It's probably mostly OS related.
Went out to my backyard to attempt my first GPS lock on the phone. Took about 5 sec for a full lock with multiple sat. (Not complaining, since my g2x would take like 40 sec.)
Check out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360278
It has a barometer, which helps with super-fast GPS lock. Even indoors (google indoor maps for malls, etc, is useful finally).
Just installed GPS Status, instantly locked and went from about 15m to 10m in a second.
It's overcast/rain and that's from my screened in porch. It got 9/9 sats right away.
The best from the same location/clear day with a charge or bionic is 5m.... but that's waiting for a while and holding it still.
i´m impressed

How would you rate the GPS performance of your nexus (poll)

Please vote (1-unusable, 2 barely usuable, 3 adequate but not great, 4 good, 5 awesome)
Ive had this phone for about a month now, and i love it, but the GPS for me has been awful.
When i first got the phone, it would work - but not great, sometimes not locking, losing signal while driving frequently, etc. Then i went on a period where it didnt work AT ALL. Randomly that started to work again - but only as good as it was before.
Currently:
Takes forever to get even a mediocre lock
VERY inaccurate - usually around ~30m at best
Loses lock
I thought maybe it was just my device, but i met a couple the other day who both own the Verizon version, and they were running ICS, so i ask them if i could run a few tests, and to my surprise, both of their phones were just as bad as mine. Ive heard a crappy GPS might be a JB bug, and will be fixed with the next update - but they were both using 4.04 - so no jellybean bug there.
Basically - for me the GPS is unusable, because if you cant count on it, whats the point. I had a doctors appointment the other day, and luckily i knew the general direction - because by the time the GPS kicked in, i was getting off the highway. I was about to just type in directions manually, and then just find the place like that. Maybe samsung just sucks at making GPS's (i used to own a captivate )
I also have started using endomondo to track my runs, and even that sucks. I started and stopped at the same point on my street, but according to the app, i stopped running about 30m short of where i actually did. (GPS gave out, or just never realized that it moved.)
How is the GPS for you??
Voted 4. I geocache, so I need a decent GPS receiver. Since the "Great Nexus GPS Outage" a week or two ago, the GPS has been adequate. It locks within about 15 seconds, and the lock has good accuracy. Lately I have noticed that even a "warm" lock takes 10-15 seconds. Warm locks should be basically instant.
I'm in the habit of launching GPS Status and allowing it to download the assistance data and get a lock before using other GPS apps. Not sure how much it helps.
Yesterday my data connection was unbelievably slow and GPS accuracy was awful. I had nearly full bars of HSPA reception, and 9 good satellites, so it didn't make any sense. Rebooting fixed that, thankfully, but it was odd that both features degraded at the same time.
I do wonder if the GPS subsystem relies on communication with some site on the 'net. Maybe that would explain why the "Great Outage" affected only Galaxy Nexus devices and not others. During that outage all of my Garmin handhelds and several other Android devices got decent locks in good time, while the GNex took ten minutes to get a poor lock.
Edit: why the heck do I have to wait 2 minutes to submit changes to a post?!

This whole situation reminds me a lot of the galaxy s1 bs that i went through. The gps clearly sucked but some defended it. People came up with a bunch of hacks that did basically nothing, and the problem was never fixed.
How is it possible that the flagship android phone has terrible gps ? How are developers supposed to design apps on it that use gps? I think the nexus s was the same way. Wtf Google. I might be returning this if it's not fixed completely with the next official update. According to whoever i talked to in customer service, should be within a few weeks.

I voted a 4.
I usually get a GPS lock in under 10 seconds if outdoors and under 30-ish seconds indoors.
Outdoors, I typically get an accuracy within 10 feet. Indoors, it can get a bit worse, but is still usually within 30 feet.
I've never had the GPS lose lock.
Voted 4. GPS locks come pretty fast for me. Accuracy is also OK, but it does lose its lock once in a while during a bicycle trip. I do have the phone in my pocket, to be fair I should test it when it has a clear view to the sky (mount it on my steer or something).
4-5 for me. It works pretty good for me and acuuracy is there.

I can just take rooting.
Used yo be really good but since the outage its been crap. It'll get a lock and give me directions but then randomly it thinks I'm two blocks away and start rerouting. This happens a lot.

I travel a lot with the Nexus GPS. It serve me well all the time. Takes about 10 seconds to locate and never loose signal. I give it a 5.
I have no need for the GPS and such but I decided to open the navigation app and boot the gps, i waited for 3 minutes with the screen saying waiting for location till i just gave up and shut the gps back down
Voted 4/5. Out of the box, it took forever to lock and even then was only hitting on 4-6 satellites. My previous phone (Epic 4G) was notorious for this as well. Used GPS Status and all is well again (lock usually within 5 seconds).

I am a car parts driver and i constantly need the use of my GPS one thing i noticed about the Gnex is that, the GPS VARIES ON the phone provider and plan you have the faster and beter your mobile network the better your GPS WILL work for you! NOW the reason i gave the Gnex a 4 star is because even with 2G edge networks the gps will work while driving within a minute but the process will lag a bit longer not due to finding the direction either but due to locating the gps signal..

How's the GPS performance on the G3?

Can someone comment on the GPS performance on the G3?
Is it fast finding your location on Google Maps? Is it accurate? And does it work when your inside a building or your house?
GPS on the G2 doesn't work inside buildings, but my SGS3 did (or at least much better. It was also faster finding my location).
Compared to your previous device, is the GPS better or worst? To which device are you comparing it with?
Thanks!
About the same as an S3 which I've come It's pretty good, I use a custom GPS.conf and have an accuracy of 16 feet using 11/20 satellites using GPS test from my bedroom. On the road, it's very accurate and google maps turns with you.
Much better than my g2 on CM11.
Instantly gets location even when using device only GPS.
I agree with gsw5700. Coming from a S3, the GPS on the G3 is much better. Google Maps loads a lot faster as well. Works just fine in my house.
All around better experience on the G3.
This is the best phone I ever had when it comes to GPS, unbelievable to me how quickly it gets my location using the Maps app.. almost instantly honestly..
Nexus 5, Xperia Z2, HTC One M7 would all take a few minutes to get GPS...
I fully expected my first attempt to connect to the GPS system to take a little while. I've always experienced this with other devices before. But the G3 connected nearly instantaneously the first time and every time since then. It definitely surprised me. Sorry I haven't used a G2 to compare it to, but I can definitely say the G3 connected faster than other devices that I have used.
As mentioned by others above. This device has the best GPS on a smartphone I ever used till date.
Location on Weather widget
I agree,it's very fast compared to Nexus 5,maps loads very fast without any lag and GPS locks in immediately
I know this is off topic but I have weird problem.Accuweather widget location is always off by 20 miles from current location,it doesn't matter if I'm driving or stationary or on wifi or LTE .Anyone experiencing the same?
Model LG G3 F400k
Edit:-
I played around with 3rd party weather widgets and location was accurate.I suspect problem is with Accuweather widget(stock)
