"Variant system" (and resulting update failure) usually means you have some degree of the following modifications on the phone: unlocked (relocked) bootloader, root, custom ROM or wrong stock ROM, s-off, modified CID/MID, wrong stock recovery.
To determine what was done to the phone (and how to proceed in fixing it), we would need the info requested in the previous response. Plus you should do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

Nothing by HTC is USA made, there are made in Taiwan. You mean its a US carrier branded version, but that isn't enough info to help. We'll still need your CID and MID as it shows up in fastboot getvar data.

Do you have fastboot access? Try another USB post, another cable. And for fastboot, you need to be in bootloader-fastboot mode (fastboot doesn't work in OS, recovery or "regular" bootloader mode).

some sellers sell refurbished devices(sinners). I think your device is such a device. what is the model printed on back side? I think mostly it may be OP6B100. really your device is a reassembled device. don't forget to check imei when you buy a phone from someone else than an authorized dealer. your device is made for USA(verizon one m8). however you can't go to lollipop as your software version isn't matching firmware.
you can flash a verizon stock rom. go to this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...zw-m8-master-ruu-firmware-collection-t2946473

Software Version = 3.31.512.2, The device is a LRA variant. Verizon For rural network. Some where I read that flashing a verizon RUU with rcdata.img will brick the device network. There was a Lollipop update available for this device 4.21.512.4. Once he updates to that, its enough to install TWRP and some custom ROM based on Marshmallow. But since his device bootloader shows verizon variant OS no, little bit confused with that. Any senior member should get into this.

verizon maybe a rural network but their devices can be used globally. but we can't get optimal network performance. but it is not disturbing to use device normally.

As stock rom didn't flash, software number & os number don't match. that means 512 has installed by a twrp backup. but firmware is 605. reason for that is; if it installs 605, boot screen totally differs to verizon. also verizon apps will be installed. as it is a problem to sell, 512 has installed. do you have same device? has some carrier apps installed in your device?

You have same device as @Aravindhan Leo, it is a LRA. Flashing verizon firmware and RUU .. you won't get SIM connection due to carrier specific rcdata.
I'm away on holiday until 15/7, so won't be active on XDA but you can read this thread, there are discussion on how to install correct RUU for your device and how to update to the latest.

htc M8
Hi Arvind,
I bought my htc m8 from ebay india and it was in Android 4.4.4(kitkat) and changed it to lollipop (5.0.1) by reading one your threads in June'16 by your
steps that you have summarized as below:-
Steps :
1. Download the RUU. Change the file name to 0P6BIMG.zip.
2. Keep the RUU file in the root of External SD card. ( Dont keep it inside any folder )
3. Take a backup of all your personal data. The RUU will erase the whole Internal Memory and System Configuration.
4. Switch of Device. ( Press power and volume - button ) This will get you to Bootloader Screen.
5. The system automatically detects the file. If not Press Fastboot manually. Press Install. ( Volume + for Yes, Volume - for No )
6. Now the system starts Installing the RUU.
7. Hold on for sometime until the process ends and prompts you to press power button for Reboot. ( Dont press any buttons while the system installs the RUU )
8. Now the system takes 2-5 min to Reboot. It may take longer sometime.
9. Now you can end up seeing Lollipop 5.0.1 setup screen.
After that my system info was
android version=5.0.1
sense version=-6.0
software version=4.21.512.4
htc sdk api level 6.55
pri version-2.87_002
prl version-00000
kernal version 3.4.0-gda51a6a [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT
Baseband version-1.12.20.1211
build number-4.21.512.4 CL470008 release-keys
But after that I had an update, i tried downloading but it does not allow me to upgrade. Then i tried downloading a ADB bootloader file and from command promt tried changing my SUPERCID 11111111 to LRA__001. it changed but still I am not able to upgrade and it shows the same error Variant System Error. Kindly help me.

It would need to be a custom ROM which supports the Verizon M8, or you would need to flash a Verizon kernel after flashing the ROM.
Even then, since your firmware is outdated (pre-6.0) you will probably suffer major issues like no boot or extreme long boot time, and broken WiFi, audio issues, etc.
I would suggest update by RUU. But I'd hesitate to give any specific advice without more details about the phone (it could be catastrophic in your case). Do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

What do you mean by get back to 100% stock ?
Do you mean you want to change the CID from SuperCID to HTC__044 (based on your current version is 2.22.707.4)
Do you mean you want to change the S-OFF to S-ON ?
Whatever it is .. the first step is to make sure what your MID is.
Run command when on bootloader/fastboot - fastboot getvar mid and post here the result.
I'm not feeling well today (down with fever) .. I will check tomorrow for your reply.

sorry to hear about your illness . May you come round soon.
and yes i wanted to get back s on to get rid of that test device and want to update to at least lollipop version through OTA system and if for that i have to change my CID then i'm ok .but if changing the superCID creates any problem of my network then it will be really negative for me. point to mention here that i bought this phone from a refurbished shop in BANGLADESH.

You do realize that you can update to marshmallow by simply flashing firmware without going back to stock, especially since you are S-Off, correct?

Still recovering, just back from clinic and a bunch of medicine :crying:
Your MID and the firmware version that you have is not tally.
Before I can give better direction, you need to decide what you want your device to be ...
First thing, let's forget about the "warning" due to S-Off for a while because that's the easiest part to fix... and the will be the last part.
Most important, where your location is ? Do you want it to be an Asia WWE device as your firmware installed ? Or you want it to be a US device as your MID stated or you want it to be a EU WWE device then we'll change both firmware and MID.

Most important, where your location is ? Do you want it to be an Asia WWE device as your firmware installed ? Or you want it to be a US device as your MID stated or you want it to be a EU WWE device then we'll change both firmware and MID.

lots of thanks for reply even in such situation and sorry for bothering you. prayers are sending from here. may you come round soon.
about my decision......
1. i want to keep my phone with latest updated firmware without problem facing. here i meant problem because i think a stock rom may be provide better and smooth service than a custom rom. and yes my thought can be wrong as i'm just new in this field.
2. removing the warning but now keeping that away as you advised.
as now i'm staying in Bangladesh (southern part of Asia) so i will adopt with appreciation any approach that will be easiest way to achieve the above twos.

Confused with update saga

Hello all I am new and so apologies if this is in the wrong place or is just a stupid question.
I have just got myself a new HTC OneM8 and was concerned that it does not see any updates as it is still on 4.4.2 i would have thought that it would at least see sence 7 or even lollipop by now if not Marshmellow yet
I went into the boot screen (fastboot off, power + vol down) and this is what i see: It is sim free and I am on Virgin UK

My question to you guys is can this be updated? should it see the updates?
or is it a bad phone (i can send it back if needed for a refund)
Thx in advance for any help on this matter cheers all
If you can send it back for a refund or for another phone, do it.
It is not a bad phone but not suitable for you at where you are located now.
That's a Sprint US device and the official update will come only when you're on Sprint US network, not on any other SIM free network.
And yes .. you post this in wrong section, I'll ask moderator to move this to Q&A section

I agree with the above that this is the worst version of the M8 to have (along with the Verizon version) if you aren't located in the US and on that actual network (Sprint or Verizon) for the following reasons:
1) Excessive carrier branding and bloatware common to most US branded devices
2) This version can't be fully converted to Euro version or any other version (to change radio baseband, OTA updates, etc.)
3) Can't flash many ROMs, unless they specifically support the Sprint version; or you install the proper kernel
Although points 2 and 3 above are mostly only relevant if you intend to mod the phone.
If the phone supports all the bands your carrier uses (3G, LTE) and you don't mind the Sprint branding,
you can still update it by RUU, with download link and instruction on the bottom of the following support page (be aware that RUU will wipe the whole phone):
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-sprint/news/
Thank you. I was sure it had something to do with Sprint as under the current user in settings/about it is listed as [email protected]
thanks again for the speedy reply much appreciated I will send it back and get a UK version
Cheers
Funny I did try the update in that link and it failed

If it was Error 155, you need to flash the firmware.zip, then RUU (quirk with MM RUU).
But as you are returning the phone, I'd just not mess with it. Above is just an FYI, as it is confusing why the RUU that matches your version would fail.

Variant system software problems

Hi, thanks for any replies and apologies for my noobness.
Bought an HTC One m8 from ebay Hong Kong seller a couple of weeks ago and having some issues, I'm in UK.
The bit of the touchscreen just above the htc logo is temperamental / inaccurate and won't allow me to select the text message icon, or whatever is there on a particular screen.
If I soft reset, it fixes the problem but soon relapses, which makes me think it's a software issue.
If I try and system update, I get "variant system version" error.

It looks like a hardware issue. If you think it is a software issue, then flashing the stock RUU may helps.
Your device is not a EU device but a AT&T US device (that's why you get "variant system version" error when doing system update)
You can install the RUU to bring it back to stock - http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-att/news/

Thanks for the reply Bro. I came across some posts in this forum. Many guys mentioned that "3.31.512.2" is a LRA version - A subsidiary of verizon ( verizon for rurel networks ). When I searched HTC dev website, it shows two sw versions related to this device.
Device : One M8
Carrier : LRA
Region : USA
Type : CRC
Kernel : 3.4.0
Android : v4.4.4
Size : 432 MB
Description : 3.31.512.2 ( My Current sw version )

Device : One M8
Carrier : LRA
Region : USA
Type : MR 1
Kernel : 3.4.0
Android : v5.0.2
Size : 535 MB
Description : 4.21.512.4
--------------------------------------
Can you help me or give me solution to install the above mentioned ( Android - v5.0.2, Sw version - 4.21.512.4 ) or any new Android build thats suits my device.

That's not a Taiwan version ... if you can return it back to seller, do it because that's not a good device for you to use in India.
If you can't return it .. the only update that you can do for now is up to Lollipop only.
Download the RUU here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66044439&postcount=37
You can use the microSD method as said in that post ... or you can follow this guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67314040&postcount=1749
Once you updated to lollipop and if there is no Marshmallow update, you can unlock bootloader and install Marshmallow custom ROM

Bro, you are the one I am Looking for. ( @ckpv5 )
I have read many posts regarding the same device sw version ( 3.31.512.2 ) and updates. Let me finish things short,
The posts I read about this sw version doesn't have any conclusion ( Successful Installation ). ( I read nearly 20-30 posts regarding the same sw version update problem )
I haven't seen anyone installed perfectly ( Problem is with this sw build or the LRA device or the users ?? )
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
( Device is S-OFF, Locked ) I want to install any new version Lollipop or Marshmallow into this.
* What I need to do to ?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have some more questions Bro, I know the basics of flashing ( I use to flash Xiaomi Redmi 1s using TWRP with Custom Rom's ) The questions may be baseless or silly, But these are some of the questions running on my mind.
* How much HTC mobile flashing is different from other manufacturers ( Answer for my situation S-OFF and Locked )
* Is there any way to change the device whole setup ( Changing To any other sw build that gives updates via OTA )
* Is it possible to change this device into a stock global HTC Sence version or Stock GPE

Thanks.
I have no issue with Marshmallow. Lollipop is Fine, Its brings down lot of new System UI changes.
Do I need to change Device from "Locked" to "Unlocked" before flashing that ROM. By Unlocking The Bootloader From HTC DEV Website.

* They are totally different if you compare to Samsung & etc.
* As your device is CDMA/GSM - not possible because of CDMA.

No .. doesn't matter whether it is LOCKED or UNLOCKED for S-Off device.
Only S-On needs LOCKED or RELOCKED and won't work on UNLOCKED.
Your current LOCKED is good ... just make backup all your important files from Internal Storage as the RUU will wipes everything on Internal Storage.

Thanks, This gives me a clear image of all the things around.
* I have downloaded the RUU file from that link you gave. I will reply you once I finish flashing. ( I am planning to do a post with Step by Step Installation Images that helps users having the same sort of problem )
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One last Question :
* I have already took backup of my contact and Images etc.
* Do I need to take any backup of my system ( In case of installation failure ) ( How and what part I need to take backup to make use of it later incase of any trouble ) ( And what tools I need to do that ) ( I heard people talking about Nandroid backup - Is it needed for me - How I have to do if it needed )
* In case of any installation Error, How can I revert back to current sw version.

I kept the RUU file on extSD. Then I tried to enter Recovery Mode, It shows a Red Triangle. I long pressed the power button and booted the device again.
1. You gave me link to RUU file - But there was no procedure in that link. I want to Install RUU from SD card. Do I need to Install any Recovery Like TWRP. ( If yes can you sent me some link to install TWRP via Mobile )
2. For the same particular LRA device you given link of OTA file to one another user. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/please-help-to-correct-ruu-to-update-m8-t3279249 ) Is it ok to do that.

Lollipop is the latest Android version for your device variant which is a LRA.
You can get the 4.21.512.4 RUU here : https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66044439&postcount=37
then OTA to 4.21.512.5 but most probably you need to change the CID from SuperCID 11111111 back to stock LRA__001 for OTA to install successfully as explained here : https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67516629&postcount=26
Then you can install any Marshmallow GSM ROM with Verizon support.
Note : Never ever install any Verizon stock firmware or any GSM firmware to your device, it'll brick the radio and you'll lose network & data.
Think about it before you do it...

It's awesome you actually got great advice and refrences to how to do what you need to do. I'd like to add this though: Consider whether getting Lollipop is worth re-locking and doing the things you need to do, including putting your device from s-off to s-on is worth it. And yes, you can run a RUU executable and extract the rom.zip from your computer's temporary files, but unless you have some mad coding and manual programming experience, with the version of HBOOT you have listed if you want to be s-off again you may be out of luck. or find yourself in a bootloop or your computer unable to find your device, or even unable to access stock recovery even with the correct button sequences. At best, you may find yourself unable to access mms apn settings (not even sure if you need or care about that), and if you can access them (apn and mms settings), unable to get the settings to stick (or actually apply themselves so your phone even uses them at all), or only have internet access but no mms even with the exact settings for mms you need put into a third-party texting app such as textra. etc.
if you are already or end up s-on and updated to the "latest and greatest" for your M8, maybe everything will work out perfectly for you . But, just something to thing about before doing all of those things. If you are lucky enough to get a bonafide XDA member's attention and help, as you have already, you are still by default expected to think of these things and do your own research. What you probably won't find out along the way is that when you run into some strange problem, there's no one knowledgeable to help you decipher it. There's tons of unanswered posts on this forum alone that have been viewed many times, that go unanswered.

That's a wrong advise and wrong understanding.
Once a device is S-Off, there is NO NEED to relocking bootloader and there is NO NEED to change S-Off to S-On.
Only S-On device needs relocking bootloader to install signed firmware and signed RUU. S-On device can't install unsigned firmware or RUU.
S-Off device can install any unsigned or signed firmware and RUU (no relocking is needed and not advisable)

Leave it UNLOCKED so it will still be UNLOCKED after RUU is installed.
Whatever you do now or later ... no need to relock it, leave it UNLOCKED.
You can do OTA as this is not a Verizon device but LRA. Now you can't OTA because you have a Verizon ROM running. RUU 4.21.512.4 is stock LRA, you'll get OTA notification once you install it.
The only thing is you need to change SuperCID 11111111 to LRA__001 to proceed OTA (as experience by other user in the above link I gave you).
Frankly speaking I don't see any good reason to have SuperCID on this variant.
Once you updated to Lollipop you can use Marshmallow ROM which support Verizon (there are a few of them). Nougat .. not so sure but you can always try later after you updated to lollipop but definitely won't work on your current firmware which is a KitKat.
