Confused with update saga - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all I am new and so apologies if this is in the wrong place or is just a stupid question.
I have just got myself a new HTC OneM8 and was concerned that it does not see any updates as it is still on 4.4.2 i would have thought that it would at least see sence 7 or even lollipop by now if not Marshmellow yet
I went into the boot screen (fastboot off, power + vol down) and this is what i see: It is sim free and I am on Virgin UK

My question to you guys is can this be updated? should it see the updates?
or is it a bad phone (i can send it back if needed for a refund)
Thx in advance for any help on this matter cheers all

If you can send it back for a refund or for another phone, do it.
It is not a bad phone but not suitable for you at where you are located now.
That's a Sprint US device and the official update will come only when you're on Sprint US network, not on any other SIM free network.
And yes .. you post this in wrong section, I'll ask moderator to move this to Q&A section

I agree with the above that this is the worst version of the M8 to have (along with the Verizon version) if you aren't located in the US and on that actual network (Sprint or Verizon) for the following reasons:
1) Excessive carrier branding and bloatware common to most US branded devices
2) This version can't be fully converted to Euro version or any other version (to change radio baseband, OTA updates, etc.)
3) Can't flash many ROMs, unless they specifically support the Sprint version; or you install the proper kernel
Although points 2 and 3 above are mostly only relevant if you intend to mod the phone.
If the phone supports all the bands your carrier uses (3G, LTE) and you don't mind the Sprint branding,
you can still update it by RUU, with download link and instruction on the bottom of the following support page (be aware that RUU will wipe the whole phone):
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-sprint/news/

Thank you. I was sure it had something to do with Sprint as under the current user in settings/about it is listed as [email protected]
thanks again for the speedy reply much appreciated I will send it back and get a UK version
Cheers
Funny I did try the update in that link and it failed

If it was Error 155, you need to flash the firmware.zip, then RUU (quirk with MM RUU).
But as you are returning the phone, I'd just not mess with it. Above is just an FYI, as it is confusing why the RUU that matches your version would fail.

[Q] How do I update my second hand HTC One M8?

Hi
Bricked my old 16gb HTC One M8 - sending to HTC for repair tomorrow.
Ordered a replacement 32gb HTC One M8 from Hong Kong. It was billed as 'new' but on arrival it appears to be S-OFF but locked. Full bootloader details below:

Whenever I try to update OTA, it tells me my phone is not stock and the update doesn't install. I just want to get the phone back to stock with the latest OTA firmware, nothing more. What would my best course of action be here?
I'm no expert but I did purchase a used M8 last week with similar status, which was able to return to (almost) stock.
First, I think your super cid (11111111) is stopping you from any OTA update. Change that to reflect your carrier.
If you are still not able to check for OTA update after that, you need to unlock the bootloader, install TWRP or CWM boot loader, and flash a backup of stock Rom from your carrier.

M8_UL_CA. You are on AT&T, correct?
You can download the latest AT&T RUU here.
Download it onto your PC. Hook up your phone and open command prompt. Direct it to your ADB folder, then enter these commands.
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot rebootRUU waiting for it to boot after each command.
Then run the RUU download by double clicking on the download, and follow the prompts given.
You will have to run it twice. The first time will not install the whole package, the second time finishes the process. This is normal.

I'm not with AT&T. I bought the phone carrier unlocked - I use a Three mobile SIM. If the phone has been made S-OFF and carrier unlocked then I'd like to return it to a stock unlocked model if possible...

Hi - I don't have a carrier - I bought the phone on its own, supposedly carrier unlocked, using an existing Three mobile SIM that I have.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a suitable SuperCID I could try?
Super cid (11111111) means you can flash any rom manually, but no OTA update.
If you want OTA updates, you either pick a carrier and use its cid, or use the GPE (Google play edition) cid. GPE means no HTC added stuffs, like sense 6.
Either way, Google for the cid numbers.

My last phone was a stock HTC which I converted to GPE. I got fed up with the phone and tried to revert to stock, but messed up. While HTC fix that one I'm trying to update this replacement... getting a bit fed up with non stock HTC phones now to say the least!
Will changing my CID to something like HTC__001 and rebooting risk bricking the phone?
My HTC M8 also has S-off, and I have no problem changing the cid to whatever I want with the toolkit on xda.
Running OTA updates, on the other hand, is more risky to me since I didn't know the history of my device. I chose to flash a nandroid backup via TWRP. (No RUU published from my carrier). Then I re-rooted the stock rom, retuned back to stock recovery, removed the "modified/tampered" status, and locked the boot loader. I left the S-off status, which is the only non-stock.

The guy that sold me the phone suggested I flash this RUU to the phone. It appears to be a Brighstar US RUU... which just confuses me even more.
"i have find a way to fix your problem, its very simple, but requires your attention to the following details
follow what this link tells you
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8/news/"
What did you ask from the seller? Was it just something "stock and unlocked"? The US rom quote was definitely stock. (Sim) unlocked or not is independent of the rom. Your phone could be locked/unlocked regardless of the rom you use.
All unmodified version from HTC are stock, including GPE. You need to first decide which carrier you want your phone to be "stock" for.

I've just spoken to someone in HTC USA Customer services - the phone is formerly an AT&T contract phone. She told me that I'm better off returning the phone to the seller if I want regular OTA updates.
So either send it back and be without phone for a week or so, or try and return it to factory stock myself. Tricky one.

I don't think the ROM update exe will run in Mac. You'll need to find a Windows pc for this, or try virtual machine running Windows on your mac.

If you ordered it from Mainland region then most sellers do S Off there even if the phone is new but if you wanted S On you could have talked to the seller. It's trend over there before getting a new android phone almost 90% sellers sells S OFF and Rooted new devices in almost all major Smartphone brands.
Edit: Yes, M8_UL_CA is definitely (AT&T) What country do you belong to? If you're based in the US then just run official HTC AT&T RUU and you will be able to get OTA updates in the near future.

Actually, it is AT&T, T-Mob, plus Telus and Rogers (Canada, I'm on Telus).
I see he is unbranded(?) now. The first answer was assuming.
@billyboy77 Your radio version is WWE. Sorry I didn't notice that before.
Download the International WWE RUU here.
You will be able to flash this to get to stock since you are S Off and superCID. It will bring you up to the latest firmware. No need for OTAs. Back up anything that is important to you before running the RUU, because it will wipe your device.
hm... Seems like you guys are really trying your hardest to make this more difficult than it needs to be. Having S-OFF he can practically make his device any device he wants it to be, T-Mobile, AT&T, Unlocked, Developer Edition, surely any GSM based carrier/unlocked version.
What's the problem? Unlock Bootloader, Get a custom recovery, Get Root, Change your MID to the one you want, Change your CID to the one you want, Restore a backup for the one you chose, run OTA's...
"OMG I'm S-OFF and bought unlocked but I can't get OTA's because my phone WAS an AT&T and I'm not on AT&T I'm on Three"

What do you mean by get back to 100% stock ?
Do you mean you want to change the CID from SuperCID to HTC__044 (based on your current version is 2.22.707.4)
Do you mean you want to change the S-OFF to S-ON ?
Whatever it is .. the first step is to make sure what your MID is.
Run command when on bootloader/fastboot - fastboot getvar mid and post here the result.
I'm not feeling well today (down with fever) .. I will check tomorrow for your reply.

Still recovering, just back from clinic and a bunch of medicine :crying:
Your MID and the firmware version that you have is not tally.
Before I can give better direction, you need to decide what you want your device to be ...
First thing, let's forget about the "warning" due to S-Off for a while because that's the easiest part to fix... and the will be the last part.
Most important, where your location is ? Do you want it to be an Asia WWE device as your firmware installed ? Or you want it to be a US device as your MID stated or you want it to be a EU WWE device then we'll change both firmware and MID.

lots of thanks for reply even in such situation and sorry for bothering you. prayers are sending from here. may you come round soon.
about my decision......
1. i want to keep my phone with latest updated firmware without problem facing. here i meant problem because i think a stock rom may be provide better and smooth service than a custom rom. and yes my thought can be wrong as i'm just new in this field.
2. removing the warning but now keeping that away as you advised.
as now i'm staying in Bangladesh (southern part of Asia) so i will adopt with appreciation any approach that will be easiest way to achieve the above twos.

"Variant system" (and resulting update failure) usually means you have some degree of the following modifications on the phone: unlocked (relocked) bootloader, root, custom ROM or wrong stock ROM, s-off, modified CID/MID, wrong stock recovery.
To determine what was done to the phone (and how to proceed in fixing it), we would need the info requested in the previous response. Plus you should do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

Nothing by HTC is USA made, there are made in Taiwan. You mean its a US carrier branded version, but that isn't enough info to help. We'll still need your CID and MID as it shows up in fastboot getvar data.

Do you have fastboot access? Try another USB post, another cable. And for fastboot, you need to be in bootloader-fastboot mode (fastboot doesn't work in OS, recovery or "regular" bootloader mode).

some sellers sell refurbished devices(sinners). I think your device is such a device. what is the model printed on back side? I think mostly it may be OP6B100. really your device is a reassembled device. don't forget to check imei when you buy a phone from someone else than an authorized dealer. your device is made for USA(verizon one m8). however you can't go to lollipop as your software version isn't matching firmware.
you can flash a verizon stock rom. go to this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...zw-m8-master-ruu-firmware-collection-t2946473

Software Version = 3.31.512.2, The device is a LRA variant. Verizon For rural network. Some where I read that flashing a verizon RUU with rcdata.img will brick the device network. There was a Lollipop update available for this device 4.21.512.4. Once he updates to that, its enough to install TWRP and some custom ROM based on Marshmallow. But since his device bootloader shows verizon variant OS no, little bit confused with that. Any senior member should get into this.

verizon maybe a rural network but their devices can be used globally. but we can't get optimal network performance. but it is not disturbing to use device normally.

As stock rom didn't flash, software number & os number don't match. that means 512 has installed by a twrp backup. but firmware is 605. reason for that is; if it installs 605, boot screen totally differs to verizon. also verizon apps will be installed. as it is a problem to sell, 512 has installed. do you have same device? has some carrier apps installed in your device?

You have same device as @Aravindhan Leo, it is a LRA. Flashing verizon firmware and RUU .. you won't get SIM connection due to carrier specific rcdata.
I'm away on holiday until 15/7, so won't be active on XDA but you can read this thread, there are discussion on how to install correct RUU for your device and how to update to the latest.

htc M8
Hi Arvind,
I bought my htc m8 from ebay india and it was in Android 4.4.4(kitkat) and changed it to lollipop (5.0.1) by reading one your threads in June'16 by your
steps that you have summarized as below:-
Steps :
1. Download the RUU. Change the file name to 0P6BIMG.zip.
2. Keep the RUU file in the root of External SD card. ( Dont keep it inside any folder )
3. Take a backup of all your personal data. The RUU will erase the whole Internal Memory and System Configuration.
4. Switch of Device. ( Press power and volume - button ) This will get you to Bootloader Screen.
5. The system automatically detects the file. If not Press Fastboot manually. Press Install. ( Volume + for Yes, Volume - for No )
6. Now the system starts Installing the RUU.
7. Hold on for sometime until the process ends and prompts you to press power button for Reboot. ( Dont press any buttons while the system installs the RUU )
8. Now the system takes 2-5 min to Reboot. It may take longer sometime.
9. Now you can end up seeing Lollipop 5.0.1 setup screen.
After that my system info was
android version=5.0.1
sense version=-6.0
software version=4.21.512.4
htc sdk api level 6.55
pri version-2.87_002
prl version-00000
kernal version 3.4.0-gda51a6a [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT
Baseband version-1.12.20.1211
build number-4.21.512.4 CL470008 release-keys
But after that I had an update, i tried downloading but it does not allow me to upgrade. Then i tried downloading a ADB bootloader file and from command promt tried changing my SUPERCID 11111111 to LRA__001. it changed but still I am not able to upgrade and it shows the same error Variant System Error. Kindly help me.

It would need to be a custom ROM which supports the Verizon M8, or you would need to flash a Verizon kernel after flashing the ROM.
Even then, since your firmware is outdated (pre-6.0) you will probably suffer major issues like no boot or extreme long boot time, and broken WiFi, audio issues, etc.
I would suggest update by RUU. But I'd hesitate to give any specific advice without more details about the phone (it could be catastrophic in your case). Do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

Updating HTC One M8 AT&T Unlocked Phone

Hello, I am super new to this... and I'm currently trying to update my HTC One M8 from 4.4.2 to 6.2.0 ... but it is not letting me through the AT&T Software update, nor installing RUU through HTC Sync Manager.
So I've decided to root my phone, and currently in TWRP 2.8.0.0 (since that's the only version that doesn't get my recovery screen stuck), and I've installed the latest SuperSU v2.65 free version. I've tried to install and run the
OTA_M8_UL_M60_SENSE70_MR_HTC_Europe_6.12.401.4_R-4.16.401.13
but it doesn't let me, it gives me an error every time that I do it. What am I doing wrong?

so you're saying, I should lock back my phone, flash install the firmware, and then flash install the RUU? is that what you're trying to say?
1. I pointed you to correct AT&T section for info
2. I pointed you to the guide on how to update especially when you're not on AT&T network,
so you can't do OTA update with AT&T software update in Settings.
3. Relock bootloader - install firmware - install RUU, the only option that you have for your current device status.
If you don't want Marshmallow update and prefer Lollipop update, everything that you need is in AT&T section
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751432
You may have call problem when on Marshmallow when not on AT&T network due to HD voice implementation,
ask in those threads for confirmation.
Good luck.

Variant System Version on HTC one M9

Hi all,
My name is Nicola and I'm from Bari, southern Italy.
Well... I'm here because it's a while that I search for a fix for my M9, i can't update it. Everytime it says "variant system version".
I also called HTC custom care that told me that my HTC is american and that is the problem, I should send the phone to HTC USA and that issue is not covered by warranty.
I want to ask if you can help me, please! :crying::crying::crying:
when I go to download mode, it says:

please, help me!
good evening
Nicola
Did you buy the phone second hand? Or was it you who set it S-OFF and changed the CID to the SuperCID?
Please use the conversion guide in the ReadMe thread for restoring a CID that is compatible with your current firmware. The matching CIDs are all mentioned near the downloads of the RUU section in said thread. It doesn't matter which of the 10 CIDs you choose. However, the meaning of each CID is explained in the CID list that is linked in the further reading section of the ReadMe thread. The reason for your phone not being able to receive/install OTAs is explained in the OTA section of the mentioned thread.
Hi Flippy,
thanks for reply.
I buy the phone new, from ebay, it was brand new. Honestly, I did nothing to the phone!
I will try changing the CID,
Thanks a lot, Flippy!
Cheers
Nico

I can tell you for sure that it's not brand new. S-OFF and the SuperCID are both clear indications that someone tinkered with this phone.
In addition, the phone is currently running a European firmware. So, if HTC can prove that it's a US model than it got converted by the previous owner.
So... I got cheated.
Well from now i think i'll buy phones only from trusted sellers, i got a lot of problems with the phone, The battery does not last long, sometimes goes in loop with Google service and I reset the phone for use it again, I had an M7 and that was better for me.
