Hi all,
My name is Nicola and I'm from Bari, southern Italy.
Well... I'm here because it's a while that I search for a fix for my M9, i can't update it. Everytime it says "variant system version".
I also called HTC custom care that told me that my HTC is american and that is the problem, I should send the phone to HTC USA and that issue is not covered by warranty.
I want to ask if you can help me, please! :crying::crying::crying:
when I go to download mode, it says:

please, help me!
good evening
Nicola
Did you buy the phone second hand? Or was it you who set it S-OFF and changed the CID to the SuperCID?
Please use the conversion guide in the ReadMe thread for restoring a CID that is compatible with your current firmware. The matching CIDs are all mentioned near the downloads of the RUU section in said thread. It doesn't matter which of the 10 CIDs you choose. However, the meaning of each CID is explained in the CID list that is linked in the further reading section of the ReadMe thread. The reason for your phone not being able to receive/install OTAs is explained in the OTA section of the mentioned thread.
Hi Flippy,
thanks for reply.
I buy the phone new, from ebay, it was brand new. Honestly, I did nothing to the phone!
I will try changing the CID,
Thanks a lot, Flippy!
Cheers
Nico

I can tell you for sure that it's not brand new. S-OFF and the SuperCID are both clear indications that someone tinkered with this phone.
In addition, the phone is currently running a European firmware. So, if HTC can prove that it's a US model than it got converted by the previous owner.
So... I got cheated.
Well from now i think i'll buy phones only from trusted sellers, i got a lot of problems with the phone, The battery does not last long, sometimes goes in loop with Google service and I reset the phone for use it again, I had an M7 and that was better for me.

Bricked my old 16gb HTC One M8 - sending to HTC for repair tomorrow.

Whenever I try to update OTA, it tells me my phone is not stock and the update doesn't install. I just want to get the phone back to stock with the latest OTA firmware, nothing more. What would my best course of action be here?
I'm no expert but I did purchase a used M8 last week with similar status, which was able to return to (almost) stock.
First, I think your super cid (11111111) is stopping you from any OTA update. Change that to reflect your carrier.
If you are still not able to check for OTA update after that, you need to unlock the bootloader, install TWRP or CWM boot loader, and flash a backup of stock Rom from your carrier.

M8_UL_CA. You are on AT&T, correct?
You can download the latest AT&T RUU here.
Download it onto your PC. Hook up your phone and open command prompt. Direct it to your ADB folder, then enter these commands.
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot rebootRUU waiting for it to boot after each command.
Then run the RUU download by double clicking on the download, and follow the prompts given.
You will have to run it twice. The first time will not install the whole package, the second time finishes the process. This is normal.

I'm not with AT&T. I bought the phone carrier unlocked - I use a Three mobile SIM. If the phone has been made S-OFF and carrier unlocked then I'd like to return it to a stock unlocked model if possible...

Hi - I don't have a carrier - I bought the phone on its own, supposedly carrier unlocked, using an existing Three mobile SIM that I have.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a suitable SuperCID I could try?
Super cid (11111111) means you can flash any rom manually, but no OTA update.
If you want OTA updates, you either pick a carrier and use its cid, or use the GPE (Google play edition) cid. GPE means no HTC added stuffs, like sense 6.
Either way, Google for the cid numbers.

My last phone was a stock HTC which I converted to GPE. I got fed up with the phone and tried to revert to stock, but messed up. While HTC fix that one I'm trying to update this replacement... getting a bit fed up with non stock HTC phones now to say the least!
Will changing my CID to something like HTC__001 and rebooting risk bricking the phone?
My HTC M8 also has S-off, and I have no problem changing the cid to whatever I want with the toolkit on xda.
Running OTA updates, on the other hand, is more risky to me since I didn't know the history of my device. I chose to flash a nandroid backup via TWRP. (No RUU published from my carrier). Then I re-rooted the stock rom, retuned back to stock recovery, removed the "modified/tampered" status, and locked the boot loader. I left the S-off status, which is the only non-stock.

The guy that sold me the phone suggested I flash this RUU to the phone. It appears to be a Brighstar US RUU... which just confuses me even more.
"i have find a way to fix your problem, its very simple, but requires your attention to the following details
follow what this link tells you
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8/news/"
What did you ask from the seller? Was it just something "stock and unlocked"? The US rom quote was definitely stock. (Sim) unlocked or not is independent of the rom. Your phone could be locked/unlocked regardless of the rom you use.
All unmodified version from HTC are stock, including GPE. You need to first decide which carrier you want your phone to be "stock" for.

I've just spoken to someone in HTC USA Customer services - the phone is formerly an AT&T contract phone. She told me that I'm better off returning the phone to the seller if I want regular OTA updates.
So either send it back and be without phone for a week or so, or try and return it to factory stock myself. Tricky one.

I don't think the ROM update exe will run in Mac. You'll need to find a Windows pc for this, or try virtual machine running Windows on your mac.

If you ordered it from Mainland region then most sellers do S Off there even if the phone is new but if you wanted S On you could have talked to the seller. It's trend over there before getting a new android phone almost 90% sellers sells S OFF and Rooted new devices in almost all major Smartphone brands.
Edit: Yes, M8_UL_CA is definitely (AT&T) What country do you belong to? If you're based in the US then just run official HTC AT&T RUU and you will be able to get OTA updates in the near future.

Actually, it is AT&T, T-Mob, plus Telus and Rogers (Canada, I'm on Telus).
I see he is unbranded(?) now. The first answer was assuming.
@billyboy77 Your radio version is WWE. Sorry I didn't notice that before.
Download the International WWE RUU here.
You will be able to flash this to get to stock since you are S Off and superCID. It will bring you up to the latest firmware. No need for OTAs. Back up anything that is important to you before running the RUU, because it will wipe your device.
hm... Seems like you guys are really trying your hardest to make this more difficult than it needs to be. Having S-OFF he can practically make his device any device he wants it to be, T-Mobile, AT&T, Unlocked, Developer Edition, surely any GSM based carrier/unlocked version.
What's the problem? Unlock Bootloader, Get a custom recovery, Get Root, Change your MID to the one you want, Change your CID to the one you want, Restore a backup for the one you chose, run OTA's...
"OMG I'm S-OFF and bought unlocked but I can't get OTA's because my phone WAS an AT&T and I'm not on AT&T I'm on Three"

Hey! i didnt understood any of what you said Could you help me? i can try to learn!
oooof tough one .....
S-OFF = Security off
Means all partitions of the phone that are usually locked down for modding are unlocked now, to change the model id (mid) and region codes (cid). Also for changing the phone from carrier lock to unbranded phone.
S-off is available via www.theroot.ninja
Then you have to change cid to a verizon one (non demo cid) and flash a Verizon RUU.
Comes to think of it that a Verizon might not be able to go WWE, I'm not into Verizon devices.
But that's the story in a nutshell. How to change cids can be found in the general section in several tutorials. Or ask/read in the specific Verizon subforum for the M8. The device has its own section !

What do you mean by get back to 100% stock ?
Do you mean you want to change the CID from SuperCID to HTC__044 (based on your current version is 2.22.707.4)
Do you mean you want to change the S-OFF to S-ON ?
Whatever it is .. the first step is to make sure what your MID is.
Run command when on bootloader/fastboot - fastboot getvar mid and post here the result.

Still recovering, just back from clinic and a bunch of medicine :crying:
Your MID and the firmware version that you have is not tally.
Before I can give better direction, you need to decide what you want your device to be ...
First thing, let's forget about the "warning" due to S-Off for a while because that's the easiest part to fix... and the will be the last part.
Most important, where your location is ? Do you want it to be an Asia WWE device as your firmware installed ? Or you want it to be a US device as your MID stated or you want it to be a EU WWE device then we'll change both firmware and MID.

lots of thanks for reply even in such situation and sorry for bothering you. prayers are sending from here. may you come round soon.
about my decision......
1. i want to keep my phone with latest updated firmware without problem facing. here i meant problem because i think a stock rom may be provide better and smooth service than a custom rom. and yes my thought can be wrong as i'm just new in this field.
2. removing the warning but now keeping that away as you advised.
as now i'm staying in Bangladesh (southern part of Asia) so i will adopt with appreciation any approach that will be easiest way to achieve the above twos.

And then i selected 'boot to recovery mode', which came up with the TWRP application. According to instructions on the net, i had to select Wipe and then Swipe to Factory Reset, which i did and it was successful. Finally i selected Reboot>System. This took me back to my initial problem - stuck on htc logo
After reading more posts, there was a suggestion that i will have to use a RUU to completely reset the phone in order to fix the problem? If so, where can i get the RUU for my HTC One M9 phone?
I also read that i can load the RUU on to the SD card and install it. Is this possible?
Can someone please point me in the right direction or provide instructions? I have performed these types of operations on my HTC One M8 so i'm not exactly a novice.
Please excuse me if my problem has been discussed on the forums, i just cannot find it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please use the search function before you ask a question next time.
You can either use the .exe to flash your phone or you can download the .zip and place it on your sdcard, also make sure you renamed it to 0PJAIMG.

Hi Lukas.
Thank you for your instructions. Unfortunately i do not know which .exe or .zip version i need for my HTC One M9. Do i need to check in the phone for some information and then find the UK RUU/exe according to this information?
Also, as i mentioned in my first post,
My HTC One M9 shows:
hTC download mode
*** UNLOCKED ***
htc_himauhl PVT S-ON
LK-1.0.0.0000
RADIO-01.01_U11440792_97.00.51203G_F
OpenDSP-15.6.1.00522.8994_1026
OS-3.35.401.12

Here you can see UNLOCKED and S-ON. I have read the information regarding HTC One M9 hacks, but still am confused. Do i have to change this to LOCKED and S-OFF??
Sorry for the questions. I am a noob but want to learn about this.
Thanks again.

You need to flash the x.x.401.x RUU since you own the WWE unbranded variant.
No you can leave your bootloader unlocked, and you can stay with S-ON aslong as you do not wish to change the CID etc.

I am now downloading RUU_HIMA_UHL_L50_SENSE70_HTC_Europe_1.32.401.17_Radio_01.01_U11440261_56.02.50306G_2_F_release_429340_signed_2_4.exe
Is this the correct one for my HTC One M9? I don't want to brick it completely lol.
Thanks again.

No, you need to flash atleast the same version or higher then the version you have already installed since you have S-ON, you can not downgrade.

Aha, i see that you got this version 3.35.401.12 from the bootloader information.
I think there is some confusion 'again' on my part.
I am looking at the list of RUU's from the site http://androidruu.com/?developer=M9 and i cannot see a 3.35.401.12 version to download and flash.
Sorry for this!

Did you read the first page and especially the first post of the thread @Kartoffelrudi linked earlier?
Edit: It looks like I've been too slow and you already found the RUU.
Sent from my HTC One S using XDA Labs
Finally got it working.
Thank you for your help Lukaz.
And thank you to Flippy!
Hi all
I'm quite new this technical stuff but here goes. I recently bought a supposedly new M9 from eBay UK (I live in the UK) and noticed it randomly reboots itself from time to time, and it also wants to update but can't due to a message saying phone has been modified. I'd like to try my hand at installing the latest RUU myself but would like to get some direction how to do it properly. So far I have found out:
CID: 332 (Latin America)
**Locked**
htc_himulatt PVT S-ON
OS-4.14.617.6 (I assume 617 is developer RUU?)
Not sure if this is what I need but I found a similar RUU (4.30.617.12) on HTC support page:
RUU_HIMA_UL_N70_SENSE80_ATT_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_4.30.617.12.exe
Also I have 32GB micro sd I could use in the phone or a Macbook Pro with HTC Sync Manager to install the RUU. Any ideas how best to proceed?
Thanks
