Call quality - OnePlus 3 Real Life Review

When you call granny, does she keep saying "Huh?! Wut?!" or does the conversation flow pretty well? Rate this thread to express how you feel about the OnePlus 3's call quality. A higher rating indicates that calls are clear and crisp, and that regardless of background noise, you can hear the other party clearly (and with ample volume) and they can hear you.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

can anyone comment on the call quality and reception?

Reception is really good but call volume isn't as loud as I would have hoped through earphones. It's not horrible, just not fantastic. Person on the other end was mentioning the call having pops in the audio. This was consistent over a two and a half mile walk plus standing in one location for a bit. Call didn't drop throughout the hour I was on the phone testing it so that's good. Some spots I could see might have a problem and have had dropped calls on various phones in the past but the OP3 kept strong. As for the popping noise, I took out the sim and did a test call with the 6s+ and was told it was a lot cleaner, louder, with no popping noises. On my side I couldn't hear any static or popping. I'm on AT&T / Denver CO.
So for my rating it would be a 4 out of 5. Speaker is good but with earphones the volume could stand to be 20% louder.

Call quality is good and a lot of it depends on your carrier.

Hi, appreciate some comments on whether the dual SIMs support LTE+LTE or is it LTE+3G or worst LTE+2G if use concurrently?
Let's say I have SIM 1 that I'm gonna use for 4G data only (all internet connections) while SIM 2 just for voice calls, is this possible? I meant using both concurrently rather than switching one at a time.
Many thanks.

Cant even use my s6 work phone for calls in the shop 90% after we installed a metal roof the signal is that bad.
So far the OP3 is running laps on the samsung and is able to take any call and keep it

Having random/sporadic issues making and receiving calls. When making a call, sometimes I don't hear the phone ringing at the other end and the OP3 phone screen will move from "Dialing" to "Call Ended". I've also had more than 1 instance of someone trying to call me on the OP3 and there is no ring or indication of a call (or even missed call!).
Called OnePlus tech support today and I was told that they have received this complaint from others. They suggested that I wipe data/cache and see what happens. I did that plus reflashed radio software. We'll see what happens from now.

Reception was so bad for me I had to get rid of the phone.

Reception is also bad for me. The 4G is great but GSM is ugly and I got cut during calls...

Noise cancellation doesn't work
Noise cancellation doesn't work on one plus 3 so dont expect best calling but still better than competitors.

Reception has nothing to do with noise cancellation. With the last update 3.2.2 oos reception is even worst...

Agreed. Since 3.2.2 I have noticed this as well.

One Plus 3 Call quality Issues
The call quality issues started after 3.2.2 upgrade. Have replaced the phone with new one plus 3, I still face the same issue.
Planning to schedule a call back with One plus 3 for tech support troubleshooting.

I have read somewhere that the reception was better with the 3.1.2. has anybody succeed to extract the radio from the 3.1.2 ? I search but didn't found any radio.img into the zip...

bad quality call
I use to call in speaker mode so this is why recently I've noticed the poor quality in the call
I hardly listen to the person is calling me, there's no problem with them hearing me
I'm stock 3.2.2 btw

Having the same issue with bad call quality with the phone.

Personally , I have no problem with the calls

reception is about average and the sound quality of the call is extremely bad, the volume is so slow you can barely hear anything, this phone is a fraud and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Recommend a good bluetooth headset, please?

Hi everybody. I realize this isn't GN specific, but that's the phone I have, so I hope it's OK to post in this forum. I'm looking for a recommendation for a good bluetooth headset. I'm going to be using it to listen to music and podcasts mostly, but will need to take calls from time to time. So, features I'd prefer:
Stereo
"Athletic" design that will stay in while I'm working out or mowing the lawn
Decent noise cancellation so I can use it in my kind-of-noisy car
Preferred price: not more than $70 or $80 (though I'm not afraid to spend more for high quality stuff)
And of course it needs to work with my Galaxy Nexus. Anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
Oh, if it's important, I'm currently running Liquid Vicious Toro v4 Jelly Bean.
Ummm
Motorola s9hd or s10hd
I've also heard good stuff about the LG halo (can't remember the name)
Free bump for you

I have the BlueAnt Q2 and is one of the best I've tried (tried a few).
Update: Sorry, your looking for a stereo A2DP headset for music listening.
Why don't you do some research before you dump your wishlist on XDA. You can find a lot of reviews and tests on google.com.

Most useful post of the day. Thanks a bunch for that.
I've heard good things about the Jaybird Freedom Headphones.
This is what I use and, IMO, it is perfect for both sports/office environment: LG Tone - HBS-700 Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Headset

It is rather stylish, lasts several days of normal use on one charge, comes with both call and volume/track controls, good sound fidelity (not premium but not garbage either - perfect for any background music) and best of all, it tackles behind the shirt collar, so I leave it on all day in the office and it is unnoticeable. It is so light that I keep dropping it on the floor every evening when changing the shirt as I completely forget it is there. Extended Bluetooth range is another plus - I regularly walk with these headphones around the house and it keeps the signal for a good 10-12 yards if unobstructed. Because there is not pressure points on ear inserts, it is good for most active exercises I do (walking, jogging on the treadmill, kayaking). I can not guarantee that it would stay in extreme situations where a lot of shoulder/neck movement is expected.
Call sound fidelity and mic are OK, I've had better in-ear bluetooth headsets but it works in most situations. For example, mic works great in car with very clear sound on the other side, but outside in windy or very noisy environment it picks too much interference comparing to the best headsets. Plus I can register it with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. At work I have it active with my work Blackberry (don't ask) and my personal Android. So I can listen to Google Music on Android and still pick the call coming to my work cell.

Yeah, I feel like a jerk for asking for thoughts and opinions on an internet forum filled with people who might have actual experience with a product I'm thinking of purchasing. Thanks for straightening me out!
And thanks to everybody who has given me a product suggestion. They're much appreciated. One of the links lead me to the Plantronics Backbeat Go. Anybody have an personal experience with it?
If you want something that will stay in your ear and block out sound get a custom mold done once you pick a headset:
http://www.averysound.com/
I own the backbeat go and the backbeat 903+. The Go takes some time to get used to the fit, but the sound quality is great and background noise is nonexistent. Also very hard to notice and doesn't interfere with anything on your face/neck (ie glasses or necklace PR whatever) like the 903+. However the 903+ is a much more stable fit due to the over the ear.
Either way, great stereo bluetooths for an active lifestyle. One is slimmer and lighter, the other will guarantee a permanent fit until you physically remove it.

HAVIT bluetooth speaker - review

I have to admit that over time I've used several mid/low end bluetooth speakers and I ended up giving all of them away as presents to my friends. They were all fantastic accessories for my mobile phone but they were lacking ... something.
We all know there is no such thing as a perfect gadget or device and, if you add the human subjectivity, you end up with an endless quest for a "great device".
All in all, now I'm settled (at least for a while) ...
Basically this is a JAMBOX replica which really delivers, at a fraction of the price of the original.
Here are some photos with the package and its content:

After opening the box I found the actual device and the cables supplied with it.
The speaker itself is plain black and feels soft when touched. The coating, even if it's very nice, it's making the surfaces prone to fingerprints so you may feel "forced" to clean it often .
The controls are somewhat classic ... volume up/down, answer/hang up, prev/next and play/pause functions, all on 3 buttons. The functions are available by short or long pressing the respective market button.
The main power switch as well as the power supply/charge and audio in/out connectors are located on the back of the device, clearly marked and easily accessible.
Now, after all the photos let's talk a little bit about the functionality of the device:
Pairing:
If you have a regular phone (not NFC enabled) then, after switching on the speaker, you can easily find it when searching for bluetooth devices and you can add it. That's all.
If you phone.tablet is NFC enables though, the pairing is as easy as touching it on the NFC sensitive area of the speaker and you're good to go.
Even if the NFC area is not marked on the speaker, it is there, as marked in the picture below:
The blue LED visible in the above picture will flask quickly while the device is in "pairing" state and slowly when in normal functioning mode.
I have to say here (for the picky ones) that the LED is bright so it may be somehow annoying if you look at it in low light (or at night).
After the pairing you can start using it as an external speaker and also as a speakerphone, because it has a microphone and an answer/hang up button.
Voice call quality:
When used for voice calls the voice of your call partner will sound very clear and nice (and I mean VERY CLEAR AND NICE ) but, at least in my case, the other party was hearing me a little too over-processed (probably because of the noise canceling DSP inside) but there were no complaints about not understanding me (the voice was a little metallic/robotic when I was not speaking loud enough to make a good difference from the ambient noise).
Music quality:
This is something highly subjective
If I'm comparing the speaker to my home sound system then ... there is no comparison that can be made. As an old commercial for muscle cars was stating: "there is no replacement for displacement" ... the speakers are small so you can not expect that bass fulfilling sound. Nevertheless, the audio quality is GREAT. If you have the intention to use this little BT speaker when you;re in vacation or when camping then you will have nothing to complain about. The bass is not strong but is there, definitely. The median frequencies are extremely clear, w/o being too saturated, while the highs are just in the right quantity.
I personally listen to Leonard Cohen type of music (involving a lot of vocal play) and the voices are nice, warm and natural, w/o popping out from the speaker.
If you look at a spectral analysis of the output (using any audio analyzer out there, like this one for example), you can see the spectrum being nicely populated (with the obvious lack of bass).
All in all, the music is great and the max volume is still usable w/o too many distortions.
Connectivity:
This a big plus for this little buddy ...
As you can see from the picture with the connectors, you have access to line-in as well as to line-out connectors.
What does this mean?
Line-in - you can use the speaker as a conventional speaker, with the included cable, and you can play music from any player, even if it's not bluetooth capable. Just plug it in and go .... Of course, you will not be able to use any of the call capabilities while in line-in mode.
Line-out - you can use the speaker as a bluetooth interface between your phone/tablet and some high-quality speakers. I plugged it to my home stereo system and the result was extremely nice, with great sound (the EDR enabled Bluetooth standard did its job)
The USB connector is being used for charging the unit using any USB port. I personally use one of the many usb adapters I have lying around the house.
Battery life:
This is subject that I can not clearly review simply because I did not managed to drain the battery yet .
After receiving the unit (2 weeks ago) I plugged it into a power adapter and I left it there until the charging status LED (a tiny RED LED located below the BLUE one) turned off. After that I've used the unit about 1-2 hours every other day and it's not dead yet. I still have to use it in order to see the battery life. Until now though I only can say it has a great autonomy on battery .
Final words:
This is not the first speaker with this form factor and size I've come across but surely is one great gadget for the price.
If you look at the audio quality for this price range then it's a safe buy - one of the safest I come across.
I can only recommend it to anyone who wants a great bluetooth speaker for only ~35 USD.
Here is the link I used (from amazon): http://www.amazon.com/HAVITĀ®-HV-SK4...=merchant-items&ie=UTF8&qid=1401162562&sr=1-4

[Q] Is the LG G3 - D855 faulty ? (Buzzing / Interference sound during calls)

Can you do me a favor please ?
Mainly those of you on LG G3 - D855, can you please perform following ?
go to Settings --> Tethering & Networks --> Mobile Networks
remember current mode and select as Network mode : GSM only
check that "Use only 2G networks" is checked
wait 5 seconds and make a test call
listen to the attached audio View attachment noise_buzzing_G3_LG855.wma, whether you can hear similar buzzing / interference sound or not (ignore the white noise from the recording, it's simply just amplified during recording)
vote please
change back the settings as in step 2.
Use phone ear piece, NOT a bluetooth or audio headset nor loudspeaker.
Please discuss what do you think this could be, what could be causing this. I'm getting this when I'm on GSM / 2G (Edge icon as data) and it's extremely annoying.
Mainly apparent when no UMTS network is available (3G -> LTE) or inside the buildings.
Thank you.
* update 28.10.2014 * As pointed out by @manaxda, you may want to try following to reproduce similar problem. Use WIRED headset, call someone WHILE USB CHARGER is connected. The apposite side will hear background noise / buzzing sound.
note : seems more people have this problem, but I would like to know how big this problem really is - eg. http://forums.androidcentral.com/ask-question/415079-lg-g3-phone-call-buzzing-isue.html, https://www.reddit.com/r/LGG3/comments/2bay4s/headphone_audio_issueinterference/, http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/help/poor-call-quality-distortion-noise-t2808530, http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...83-hissing-buzzing-sound-when-data-calls.html
Still the same on latest V10L...
I do have LG G3 D855 and gsm call has buzz noise. Compared to my ex huawei ascend p1 and honor 3c it is very noticeable and some times annoying. Very bad for such a hi price tag phone.
I had this problem when my phone was new but after a few calls it went away...
Sent from my LG-D855 using XDA Free mobile app
Can you confirm that please even with that settings I posted ?
It important to force GSM/2G network, without it it is just "a feeling"and you never know in which mode phone is connected.
Luckily/unluckily I'm in the location where I got full signal, but GSM/2G only.
Thank you.
All my previous phones were much better - starting even with I9000, I9300 and LG G2... none of them were facing such stupid side-effect.
D855P. No problems
Vivo 900MHz GSM, no inductive forces nearby
Also, don't expect this to be fixed in a software update. It might have to do with electromagnetic interference, which may be from your phone, the place you live or where you're standing. For example, when I use the stairs in my house, I go near the electric fence central, which electrifies the fence discharging high voltage in bursts. If I'm on the phone the moment I go down or upstairs, I can hear a rapid "click-click-click-click" on the phone, that intensifies the closer I am to the central. It happens with every single phone I've ever owned, and even AM/FM portable radios near to it. And specially in guitar amplificators, which seems to be extremely sensible to those variations (It can't be near the central, nor near the electric fence). Another good example is when you leave your phone near an unshielded speaker, and you can hear the "buzz code" your phone receives just before a call.
Well, anyway, you might have something that's affecting your call quality. Does it happen everywhere?
The G3 may be more susceptible to this, or the fact that its earpiece is so loud, it allows you to hear the buzz lol.
Yes, for me it happens everywhere (eg. a per-requisite to CONFIRM it is to choose GSM network as advised). Except of that, also where I do have standard GSM network, I can hear this buzzing as well. Also I do have it confirmed on other pieces of G3.
For all the others, please whenever you are voting in a poll, be sure you really manually switched the network please.
Voted.
D855 and i can hear some buzzing during a call if i'm under the 2g network.
I finally found someone with the same problem! I had been looking for folks who had that problem and were able to solve it but all I found was issues with AUX cable problems and hissing noise. Note that if you use a wired headset even in 2G GSM area, there won't be any noise, it's only through the phone speaker.
This is utterly frustrating, I have all these 3 problems, plus a fourth - below. The G3 is a fantastic mini tablet but a very poor phone IMHO.
shaarky, could you make a test, call someone or leave yourself a voicemail while using a wired headset with USB power on and then without USB connected. I bet that the receiving party (your voicemail) will have lots of background noise when USB is connected.
The workaround I found is to buy a wireless charger and a bluetooth dongle for my desktop PC.
what the hell.... you are right @manaxda ! I wasn't even aware that there is also this issue.
When using wired headset and charging via USB, the opposite side hear terrible background noise/buzzing.
Now question is whether it's connected with the issue I'm describing....
LG should NOT sell such device which is even not able to perform clear call using some basics GSM standards....
I think the issues are not related, though both are poor electromagnetic interference shielding
- from the phone radio into the phone speaker in one case (like when you place a cell phone close to a powered speaker)
- from the USB transceiver / power supply into the wired headset microphone in the other case (the headset MIC gets USB noise and sends it to the other party, the cell phone microphone does not have this problem)
In all situations it is bad engineering design and I suspect it doesn't have a SW fix... I'm no expert but usually there are HW measures / filters that can be placed on the PCB to filter unwanted noise, sometimes even an actual metal shield/case around components see an example:

Well, I got my phone two times in warranty repair. 1st time they exchanged ear piece, 2nd time whole board... and no change whatsoever. LG support claims that there were just "few" users mentioning this problem, so they don't care about it. If it's by design and I would say it is, than this phone is faulty right from the beginning, LG will however never admit it.
I'm hoping that they fix it in a new release, and slightly before my warranty expires I will try to get a replacement from Orange. It's easy, call support with a headset and USB power, they hear the problem immediately...
It's already my 3rd G3, each time Orange thought a new handset would fix the problem. Now I'm waiting a bit longer to get the 4th one
shaarky, I just double checked today, our conclusions may be wrong, I have the buzzing noise either on 4G or 2G at home. HOWEVER I have that noise only in my neighborhood. If I go elsewhere in town (I guess connected to a different tower) I don't have the noise.
Just to be sure - even when you switch manually to GSM as per my recommendation, you do not have this noise ? That's really odd then.
yes, tried in forced 2G and in 4G, the noise is the same. But if I go to the Orange store a few km away to show them the problem, there's no more noise...
So....no change also on Lollipop. Great.
Have you tried lollipop on the g3? Any other bugs fixed like the aux cable detection?
Same problem on D855 16GB. 2G Only (not tried 4G).
I think that the poorer is the signal (=higher transmission power) the higher is the noise. That can explain no noise in some places also in 2G.
I really don't think a sw solution can solve the problem, but a really simple hw solution could, unless audio amplifier for internal capsule has some sort of software tunable filters...
Yup, happens only in 2G mode..

Do your Tab S speakers distort sound?

HI all,
Over in the UK, and ordered my first ever android device which I got 2 weeks ago (TAB S 8.4 T705). I am led to believe any issues with it will be sorted more quickly before the "golden month cooling down period" has expired, so I am spending many hours trying to test it all and make sure it's working properly before the 4 weeks is up. The sound on the Tab S has not gained many good reviews, and is often classed as "average", yet I would currently put it at "below average". There are many things to like about this tablet, and I will live with the very limited speaker performance as long I am confident this is "normal". I would like to ask you guys if the TAB S speakers distort for you. Most of the time the sound is acceptable, but once I increase to over 70%, I can hear a rough sound accompanying it. (no problem with ear phones btw)
Please would you do the following and let me know what you hear:
Bring up the alarm clock and select the sound "Soft Breeze Waltz". While adjusting the slider for volume, do you hear distortion with the piano sounds with a volume over 40 or 50%?
I am new to this forum, so I hope to stick around and learn a thing or two.
Thanks for reading and hopefully reporting back.
I would not expect too much from those tiny little speakers, you might have the bass set too high, try different profiles or do a custom if possible.
EDIT: OK i had to give it a go, I played "Soft Breeze Waltz" at 100% volume and there was very little if any distortion, maybe the 10.5" has different speakers.

Hi John, thanks for replying to me.
Yeah, I won't expect much from those speakers, but I want my brand new Tab to work as Samsung intended it to work. I got to play around with the Tab 4 for a few days over xmas, and I never noticed any issues with the speakers on that, and I feel certain they were much better.
Thanks for testing out that alarm sound, but perhaps there is a difference in speakers with the 10.5 like you said. Regarding equalizers, that only seems to apply when listening to music, and I don't get an option for that when setting the alarm. I will grab some sound apps and see if that does anything, but now you tell me you didn't get any distortion, makes me wonder if I should try for a replacement. I am really happy with it apart from this. It's certain tones that are most noticeable, like piano, and that melody clearly sounds s#it over 50% volume. If anyone else who has the 8.4 model is happy to test theirs, I would be grateful for your feedback.
Nick
Tbh I find the speakers perfectly acceptable on my 10.5 and just as I would expect. I haven't noticed any distortion at louder levels. I'll do some tests.

This is frustrating. Ordered a book cover for it and really intend on keeping it, but the sound on it just seems less than acceptable, but I do have a keen ear for sound and music. I can't see the speakers being any different between the 8.4 and 10.5, so maybe there could be an issue with mine. Yeah, try that test out, thanks. Still hoping someone with the same model as mine might pipe in.
Does the sound quality sound the same from either speaker, if it does it`s unlikely you to have two faulty speakers.
Have you asked anybody else to listen to the sound quality to see if they hear the same distortion that you do.
John.
I found a review of the loudspeaker when compared to other tablets.

Thanks for that. You made a good point, but speakers could still be affected by a driver issue making them both sound bad. However, the top speaker does seem to be a lot worse than the bottom one, so thanks for pointing that out. I saw mixed reviews about the speakers, from saying they are good (like above), and others saying they were disappointing and "tinny" and "inviting distortion" when cranking up the volume.
Reviews of course can be subjective. I think if this was normal, there'd be many more people complaining about them, so I will call Samsung on Monday and ask them. Hopefully they won't try and repair it, and just give me a replacement. Cheers for your help.
I tested the alarm file and it did sound a little raspy at the top end on full vol.
So I played Happy by Pharrell mp3. At full whack it had a little distortion until I turned the vol down to 12 from 15.
It's nothing I wouldn't have expected and perfectly acceptable to me.
I compared the same track to my HTC One_M8 which is known for its speakers and audio quality and Tbh not much different.
Still some distortion at the top end at full vol.

I looked for that MP3 "Happy" and downloaded it from Faxo.com, so assuming we both have the same file recorded at same volume, then I had the same experience. In fact, in made me wonder if I was being a fussy git. Just that you expect the pre-installed alarm melodies to play really well.
I could send this one back, and the next could have more serious problems, so I am re-evaluating what to do now :/
Sometime they distort but it depends on the audio played.
Instead I've got a different problem, audio doesn't seem centered. I mean the "balance" seems to be slightly on right. Right speaker is louder, do you have such an issue?

Yes, it does depend on what is played. These speakers do not handle piano tones well at all, while other sounds seem OK. Interesting you talk about the right (top) being louder, as that's the one that seems to be distorting more for me, or perhaps it's just that it's louder! Samsung are going to pick it up from me and send me a new replacement anyway, which is good, because I'll be forever regretting not trying. I'd still be happy with it even if this was normal for the Tab S...just can't bare the idea of having a deficient device.
For anyone that's interested... I learned how to get the test page up where you can test all the hardware.
1. Open calculator
2. Type in (+30,012,012,732+
3. On the large keypad, type in *#0*#
You should then have a load of buttons to test all your hardware.

Vibration motor issues?

Anyone having the same issues with the motor like in this review? It sounds terrible. I rely on haptic feedback for typing and if it sounds like this while typing or even getting phone calls that's going to suck.

Minute:seconds of what you're referring to in that video?
Can't say mine sounded funny or anything, just the usual annoying, battery wasting vibration like other phones... ?
It sucks when you get call or notifications.
Haptic feedback does not feel that crappy

Well that's good at least. Does it really sound like a rock rolling around in there though? It really does like its broke in the video.

I've been using two unit and both of them has crappy call notification as MKBHD review, but haptic feedback seems really normal.
Just verified on the two phones I have, no crazy vibrating broken-rattle sound.
The vibration even when just typing sounds pretty crappy on my razer and extremely off when compared to every other phone I've ever used. Other than that though the only complaint I have is the Android system seems to be using up way more battery than expected even when not doing anything like just over night it went from ~60% to around 40% just on standby.

I've got 2 phones here, don't hear the haptic feedback at all, it's working though.
I'm betting ya got a bad unit.
Battery could be bad but might be software ya got installed. Or have ya done the latest update?
Here's what I've had so far, battery life is great.

Yeah I have the latest update and it's like the haptic almost squeaks while typing. Ugh, I was hoping I wouldn't have to deal with sending it back if it just happened to be the norm.
Also are you using Bluetooth because I have it connected to my Moto 360 2 which might be the difference in battery life

Updated mine with the update and not the 2nd phone. Haptic feedback still operational but no noises other than the slight hum you hear with holding anything with a vibration mode. (normal)
Certainly don't hear anything that might be described as squeaks or rattles. :/
Don't sweat it though. If ya rma it they're pretty fair, though I wouldn't let them talk you into any extended responses to allow them passed the 15 day return window. I'm a firm believer that return windows should be 1-2 months. There's just no way to fully vet a piece of hardware in 15 days unless that's all you're doing. (but most people have a job to go to)
Also with the rma they pay for shipping. I myself though turned my rma into a return for the speaker crackle and am just going to buy it from amazon. It's here in the US already and prime allows for more. Assurant is offering extended warranties as well for 162$ and 99 deductible. (though I think Upsie is cheaper; not familiar with either experience in the event of a warranty claim unfortunately)
And I have not used enough bluetooth yet on the device to be a good response for ya. Sorry. Only connected to a headset and keyboard/mouse the other to test connectivity, so I've yet to discover how it does with lengthy connection sessions.
I passed on the feedback on the vibration pattern software tuning.
I'll see what we can do about it.
I wasn't the only person who thought haptic feedback sounded weird on my phone so I went ahead and sent an email to support. I guess we'll see how that goes.
Motor on mine sounds awful for calls or notifications (just like in the video). Haptic feedback for typing seems fine though.
Got my third phone and it's fine, no loud rattles or such.
Yeah they for sure have QC line issues. I bet some units didn't have the motor taped down.

I have mine enabled but turning it up or down had no effect on how bad it currently sounds.
