Hey everyone,
I've had my One (M8) for two years now, and problems have begun to sprout up. First of all, some info about my phone:
CID: HTC__044 (Asia_WWE)
Fully S-OFF
Running rooted stock Sense 7.0 Marshmallow ROM
Now, I cannot charge my phone at all. Before you guys say 'change the charging cable', I've tried seven cables in all, with no avail, as well as three wall chargers and several portable chargers. I researched this issue, and it turns out that my USB port on the phone itself is screwed, and my phone is stuck in USb Host Mode (although I don't see the notification, but the Car app starts upon power on). I don't want to send in my phone for repair this late - I'm probably purchasing the HTC 10 to replace my M8, but I need a working phone for the next couple of weeks at least.
Be advised that I have tried all the 'hold xxxxx buttons for yyyyy amount of time and let the phone reboot', but all of it was pointless, seeing that this looks like a hardware issue. Now, I read in this topic that there was a kernel modification that allows the phone to draw power to charge despite it being in USB Host Mode. How do I go about performing this for the stock HTC Sense Android MM ROM?
Thanks in advance.

It's dry.... I have already done this, I was asking for a kernel mod, not to check my USB port for moisture.

I have a friend. We rooted her phone. All was well but apparently, somehow, the usb port on her phone got damaged (not b/c of software) and now the phone won't charge. She wants to send it for repair but she is paranoid since we rooted it that they won't fix it. She'd like me to un-root it. So here's my question:
I installed cyanogen's rom. Is it possible to update to Sprint's "official" 2.2 straight from that rom? Will accepting Sprint's update automatically un-root it, or is there a more complicated process needed?
Thanks!

with out the ability to use usb (if it doesnt work for charging, does it connect to the pc and get recognized?) you cant run the ruu.
however, if you run the OTA update. from home->settings->system updates, you should be able to query for update, not sure which, so try them all!
the OTA breaks root and removes recovery (please someone correct me if im wrong), bringing it back to stock.
you could always just brick it *shrug*

Thanks for noticing that I can't plug it in USB. My concern about your post is the last line, "you could always brick it." Do you mean that if I try to update, it may brick b/c it was rooted? If it's bricked will the fact it was rooted or not come into question with repair place, or will they know it was rooted?
Thanks again.

meaning, you can brick it on purpose i have no idea if they can find out if you rooted it, or if the repair service would even care. theyre not the claims department, soooooooooooooooooooooo.
theres a thread there in q&a or general about someone who returned(attempted to) a phone because "the ota bricked it"
If I were your friend I would download a 2.1 rom right from the phone, use a file exploere to move it to the root of the sdcard, flash the 2.1 rom then do the official 2.2 ota update.
The only problem with this is if you can't charge it then I hope you can get it done by the time her battery dies.. however, if the battery dies and you can't charge it enough to finish this then what is Sprint gonna do anyways.
Actually I think that might be a real option. If you can't charge the phone just run it down till it dies and then take it in. They wont be able to power it on and see that it's rooted anyways..

This forum has the best people, I swear. I can put my battery in her phone. I like your idea. I actually have a backup in her phone of the stock rooted rom. So, if I flash back to it, do you think I can just download the official update and become "un-rooted"?
thanks.

Mine is NOT ROOTED & at day 21 the USB port &/or cable went buggy immediately after I purchased & used a car charger from the Sprint store (employee insisted it was the "correct" charger for EVO after telling me NOT to use my Palm Pre chargers & cables even though the ports were the same....he said the Pre equipment xfrd a diff current or wattage. Who knows if that's bad info or not, btw .)
The problem started off as totally non-functioning for charge, pc sync, et all, then after using the Sprint car charger exclusively for several days - just to be able to use the EVO at all- & freaking out about it to Sprint Tech Support & at the store, it just suddenly started charging if I touched or bent it a certain way, like it had a short or bad connection.
Next, I visited a Sprint repair store & they just reset the "USB debugging" option to ENABLE/ON (again) & then the USB cable would work for pc sync and sometimes charge as well.
After 6 weeks I'm left with having to ditch the wall outlet adapter plug from the orig box, put a cig lighter/USB plug from my iTouch on it & plug it into a cig lighter wall plug adapter to charge at home in the wall.
I'm pretty tech savvy & I still can't tell if it's a software issue with the cable or the EVO port, or a physical issue with the cable or the port, or some combo of all 4 options. I love my EVO so I adapted & moved on, but definitely logged my complaint loudly with Sprint, insisting they extend my 30 days until the issue is 100% resolved.
I hope that my experience solves your own mystery.

Ok, so I restored the 2.1 backup, checked for update, downloaded update. When I hit install, it went into recovery. Half way through installation, I got the little android with an exclamation mark. It just sat there for 5 to 10 minutes (saw a progress bar before this but it stopped halfway through). I pulled the battery and turned the phone back on. Thank God, it's not bricked but I don't know why the update stopped halfway through. I did install the newest radios when I flashed cyanogen's rom and I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it not completing installation. I'm wondering if I should install an older radio and try again.
Any ideas?
I'm looking mainly if someone can point me in the right direction regarding an issue.
My phone I got off a mate doesn't ask me when I plug it in via USB what I want to do. I understand there are settings that I have changed for it to ask me what to do. Charging works fine with phone off and booted.
I have tryed cables that I know are for data as well as power ( checked both computers and with a kindle and gf's cyanagenmod phone both work.)
Some might say my mate tryed to root it. I have asked him and he only did one over the air update. He has no gain from lying as he said he would pay for repair( replace ment of the USB board as I belive the phone has a upper and lower board.) Trying to save money (hes a mate and I'm not going to mess him about.) and a save a repair that might not be needed or even fix the issue.
I have cleaned the port with a small brush and cables have a normal "snug" fit.
Futher to research on forums I think I might have a USB bricked phone. At one point I unmounted my SD card while USB dev mode on and I got " USB not reconized". At this point I unplugged the phone to then install drivers. Drivers did not work. Now you may think broken but my experince says if the connecter was broken that it wouldn't even charge as I belive the outer pins are the power.
When I look up desire hd USB brick online I get only results for desire phones not desire hd. With desire issues seems that the phone needs to be rooted barr one walkthough that's once again geared towards non hd desire.
My points are-
Am I correct to look at this as my phone could be USB bricked or does this issue only affect the desire model of phone. Belive it could be caused by the ota update.
Has anyone else had this issue? If you got the phone fixed did a lower board replacement correct it?
Any links to further reading or solutions would be great help. I feel I'm failing to describe my issue in the correct terms if it is indeed a USB brick.

I also think i dont have a recovery, as when I do a boot holding power and volume down and click recovery its loads for a bit and then shows a phone with a red ! next to it.
Just to learn, I am correct from what I have read that the kernel is just like a modern OS kernel for a laptop/desktop. Its the part that makes the software and hardware talk?
When you got the phone, had the phone gone through a data wipe (factory reset)?
...And you've tried using the USB connection via another computer as well?
...And in the settings, under 'Connect to PC' you have 'Ask' checked?
The phone had a factory reset done via android settings menu and when you hold power and vol down.
Checked settings and it says ask.
No dice on another pc double checked the cable with kindle and data transfer was ok.

I also have the same problem with my desire hd.
Trying different roms didn't seem to fix it.
I'm thinking of sending it for repair.
First i want to flash a stockrom, witch seems quite hard if your USB doesn't work.
Hello,
Please help me. My phone will not connect via USB to a PC. Steps I have taken to try and solve this so far:
- Tried 3 different USB cables;
- Re-installed Kies, Samsung USB drivers, Android SDK google USB drivers, etc
- Turned USB debugging on/off
- Turned Allow Mock Locations on/off
- Tried USB Utilities, tapped apps, etc.
- Tried *#7284# dialpad trick
- Tried 3 different computers (all running win 7 64 bit)
- Unmounted/remounted USB in CWM recovery
- Flashed 3 different ROMs (jedi mind tricks, clones n drones, darkside evolution)
- Restored a nandroid backup from when it was working;
- wiped cache, dalvic cache, factory reset, etc.
When i try to mount usb in CWM it says "E: Unable to write to ums lunfile (No such file or directory). Yesterday it was not charging over USB, now it is (flashed darkside evolution ROM this morning).
Current setup:
Android: 4.0.3
Baseband: T989UVLE1
Kernel: 3.0.8_SGH-T989_DARKSIDE.VENOM_02+
Build: DARKSIDE.EVOLUTION.3 v7
If anyone has any ideas I would really really appreciated hearing them. I have been searching and trying fixes for the last couple days and i'm about ready to throw my phone off a bridge.
Thank you!
USB port is shot. This is a know problem with this device. The device will be able to charge, but will not be recognized by the PC. Had the same issue with my wifes phone and was unable to root. Half the time, it wouldn't even charge using the car charger (though the wall charger always worked).
Called TMO and received a warranty replacement. They charged $20, which they later removed when I called and asked them to.
Thank you, at least i'm not crazy!

It is an older phone, purchased last fall right when it hit the shelves. I actually took the thing apart last night and noticed that there was some water damage, it spent an evening outside earlier this year but I hadn't noticed any issues until this weekend. I cleaned some corrosion out of the USB port out with an old toothbrush and bolted it back together, fired it up and everything seems to be working again. Wonder how long its gonna last?

I have wrestled with this phone, and searching this forum and others looking for an answer and none have been found yet. Here's my situation.
I own two HTC DINC2's. My wife's wouldn't power on. Talked with Verizion Tech Support and they led me into HBOOT to try to clear cache, then to factory reset. After each attempt I get the HTC White Screen, then nothing. I must pull the battery out to reboot. We took it to a Verizon store, and they said there was nothing they could do. (grumble)
When I plug in my phone to my computer, I get no USB support. Windows 7 says the USB device has malfunctioned. So most directions to root or flash the firmware instructions are of no help. The phone will also not charge. When I plug it in, I get the amber light for about 30 seconds, then it shuts off.
HBOOT menu reads as follows...
**** LOCKED ****
VIVO_W XB SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-0.98.0000
RADIO -1.09.01.0312
eMMC-boot

I have formatted the SDCard and tried a new PG32IMG.zip file. It will load, but the result is the same. I have tried this with a completely different SD Card, with the same result.
Is there anything else I can try, or is Verizon right...I have a paperweight...??
I would probably replace the Charging port

I take it that the phones are not on warranty anymore?
Did these phones work in the past?
Of course, different outlets and USB chargers may help with the charging issue. Although I'm sure you've tried this.
For your phone, try a different battery maybe?
If all else fails, you could try to manually replace the charge port. :/
Try booting up a Linux Live CD and trying to USB connect with that.
Does ADB work?
For your wife's phone...the only thing that comes to mind is rooting and flashing another ROM.
If it makes you feel better, you aren't the only one with issues.
My screen digitizer is failing. (Thread in Q&A - "Phantom Touch Input")
No, no more warranty says both Verizon and HTC. My wife's phone worked perfectly til about a week and a half ago.
I have tried about 3 different USB charging cables...both those that came with the phone and other micro usb cables.
I have tried both of the batteries, both fully charged to no avail.
I don't have any experience with Linux, and don't think it would change the PC recognizing the phone.
The computer will not recognize anything with the USB, so getting to ADB is a problem.
How can I root/flash a rom without the computer?
I'm afraid that if I replace the charging port, I may still need to replace other things. The Charger doesn't really explain why the phone won't get past the white HTC Screen, right?

Yes...the drivers are installed. I have another identical phone and the USB is recognized as normal. The affected phone is not recognized at all.
When I plug it in, the amber light comes on for 20 seconds (I've timed it) then goes off. Phone will no longer do anything without having the battery taken out.

Hey guys,
Please stop PM'ing me about APX Mode. I get like 10 PM's a day.
How to get in
Nobody really knows. The most common way has been pressing volume up and down together while device is off and then plugin USB while connected to a computer.
How to get out
When your device is in APX Mode, HTC fixes it in repair. Someone here on XDA PM'd me with this video and said it should work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsnl_LIgzt0
I have not tried it myself, so just give it a try and share with the rest.
All the other discussions about APX can be done here, please stop pm'ing me.
Thank you!
Pressing vol up and down while phone is off works only on some devices. Some pm'd me about getting into apx mode with this. PC will recognize the device as "APX something something"
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I too have joined the APX club.
I bought the phone off eBay, with a damaged screen not displaying anything.
When plugged into USB, it would charge, and the PC recognized it as a HTC One X.
When playing with the buttons, I could hear the startup tone.
Since fitting the new screen- very carefully - the phone has gone into the APX mode.
The charge light has come on once whilst plugged into the computer, after which I swapped it over to the mains charger. The red charging light stayed lit for 10 minutes, then went out.
Since then, I've seen no life whatsoever other than the APX mode.
I have tried the YouTube video above, and many combinations. I have tried charging up the battery directly via a hacked USB cable. I have tried powering on the phone with what I think has been every possible combination. I have tried leaving it plugged in overnight. I have tried plugging in the mains/USB charger while pressing buttons. Something isn't right.
The battery can light up a 3V LED, and today I have just found up a multimeter, so I will check the voltage of the battery as I believe it needs at least 3.6 or 7 volts to start up.
Yesterday I tried speaking to Vodafone, who didn't have any software to flash the HTC other than the publicly available software from the HTC site. I also spoke to Carphone Warehouse, who also didn't have any equipment. Neither assistants or the engineers in the shops had come across the APX mode before.
I'll update this thread with any more of my findings, as it is one of the top results in google and I suggest others do the same. Hopefully together we can work a way out of this without the need to send to HTC.
Try holding the power button for roughly 40 seconds with charger disconnected. It might work.
You could also try "nvflash" reboot commands. Since there's no nvflash package/drivers for the HOX I'd try with the Asus TF packages. Though, I'm pretty sure someone has already tried it without success
Also, are you able to connect the device in adb mode? Adb without being in OS works if you power off, wait couple of seconds an connect it to the PC without powering on. You should see the red led constantly on. If it works try "abd reboot oem-34". I'd appreciate it if you could report if it did work.

Afraid I've tried all that. ADB isn't available, only appears in APX mode.
Phone does nothing.
Only interaction I can have with the phone is to connect via usb, and holding the power button for 10 seconds changes it to APX mode. Otherwise it's an unknown device, for which no drivers are available- I can force drivers onto it, but its hard to tell exactly what it's looking for.
I have also tried the NVflash utility for tegra 3 devices- I have a transformer prime, this is what made me purchase a tegra 3 based phone.
Anyway, the NVflash utility cannot operate with the phone, it merely displays as an unknown device.
No red LEDs, no nothing.
Cronus, trust me, I've tried
Still, I've just popped the battery out and checked the voltage- 2.64V - WAY below where it needs to be- around 3.7 volts to boot up.
I've popped the terminals out of the battery connector, and connected them to the hacked USB on the positive and negative. It's currently plugged in to the HTC wallcharger, and it is charging the battery up.
I'm going to leave it on for an hour, then I'll stick it back in the phone. More updates to come :good:
Just send it to htc or your carrier mate. This happened to me b4 xmas and I sent it back to my carrier. They charged me 76 pounds and gave me a brand new phone even tho they said they had to change a circuit board. Sorry to say this but if everyone that gets their phone into apx mode should sent it to htc so they realise that this is a design fault and not just caused by unlocking the bootloader. Maybe some haven't unlocked and are also experiencing apx mode?

As far as I know the bootloader hasn't been unlocked, as the previous owner said they'd only had it 5 days before they dropped it on the floor and the screen popped out. But I have had it working properly- I could hear the startup sound being played when I had it.
I've spent £58 on a new screen, to spend another £76 just isn't economical.
The battery is now back in the phone after being charged to 3.8 volts, it still doesn't appear to be doing anything- I'll post back if there are any further developments.
I have found a company which say they have encountered and fixed the APX mode on the HTC One X before - www.uk-repair.com
Quoted me £44 to get it fixed. I've politely requested any information they feel comfortable contributing about the APX mode be posted on the forum.
Fingers crossed
I made an insurance claim for my APX'd phone as it was only £25 excess; it was sent to thefoneclinic.com who have deemed it beyond economical repair so i'm getting a replacement. I'm guessing either something on the motherboard was actually fried or only HTC themselves can recover from APX mode
AW: [HowTo] Getting out of APX Mode
To the people stuck in APX mode; try constantly rebooting. Like powering on hundreds of times. TripNnRaver got his device out of APX this way, but obviously he is stuck in APX again after a reboot. At least he managed to boot into the OS for a short time.

This happened to my phone. Installed Trip's endeavor unleashed v003 and it bricked my htc one x. I kept on rebooting it and managed to get back once to the OS but when I restarted the device again it never go back now its bricked!
I don't know though if my ONE X is on APX mode. I can still go to fastboot and recovery but everytime i copy files thru ADB, from my pc command line it says success but when i try to flash it from clockwork the file i copied isnt there. I tried flashing a different recovery but it seems that the device is readonly and i couldnt delete or write to it.

Hey guys,
Please stop PM'ing me about APX Mode.
Thank you!

APX is not a battery or a software issue, it's a hardware issue !
