[Q] Hardware problem...how to un-root - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a friend. We rooted her phone. All was well but apparently, somehow, the usb port on her phone got damaged (not b/c of software) and now the phone won't charge. She wants to send it for repair but she is paranoid since we rooted it that they won't fix it. She'd like me to un-root it. So here's my question:
I installed cyanogen's rom. Is it possible to update to Sprint's "official" 2.2 straight from that rom? Will accepting Sprint's update automatically un-root it, or is there a more complicated process needed?
Thanks!

I believe all you have to do I
Is run the stock ruu program which is run from your computer connected by usb look for it in the developers thread

with out the ability to use usb (if it doesnt work for charging, does it connect to the pc and get recognized?) you cant run the ruu.
however, if you run the OTA update. from home->settings->system updates, you should be able to query for update, not sure which, so try them all!
the OTA breaks root and removes recovery (please someone correct me if im wrong), bringing it back to stock.
you could always just brick it *shrug*

Thanks for noticing that I can't plug it in USB. My concern about your post is the last line, "you could always brick it." Do you mean that if I try to update, it may brick b/c it was rooted? If it's bricked will the fact it was rooted or not come into question with repair place, or will they know it was rooted?
Thanks again.

meaning, you can brick it on purpose i have no idea if they can find out if you rooted it, or if the repair service would even care. theyre not the claims department, soooooooooooooooooooooo.
theres a thread there in q&a or general about someone who returned(attempted to) a phone because "the ota bricked it"

If I were your friend I would download a 2.1 rom right from the phone, use a file exploere to move it to the root of the sdcard, flash the 2.1 rom then do the official 2.2 ota update.
The only problem with this is if you can't charge it then I hope you can get it done by the time her battery dies.. however, if the battery dies and you can't charge it enough to finish this then what is Sprint gonna do anyways.
Actually I think that might be a real option. If you can't charge the phone just run it down till it dies and then take it in. They wont be able to power it on and see that it's rooted anyways..

its not hard to swap out a battery for a test.

This forum has the best people, I swear. I can put my battery in her phone. I like your idea. I actually have a backup in her phone of the stock rooted rom. So, if I flash back to it, do you think I can just download the official update and become "un-rooted"?
thanks.

Mine is NOT ROOTED & at day 21 the USB port &/or cable went buggy immediately after I purchased & used a car charger from the Sprint store (employee insisted it was the "correct" charger for EVO after telling me NOT to use my Palm Pre chargers & cables even though the ports were the same....he said the Pre equipment xfrd a diff current or wattage. Who knows if that's bad info or not, btw .)
The problem started off as totally non-functioning for charge, pc sync, et all, then after using the Sprint car charger exclusively for several days - just to be able to use the EVO at all- & freaking out about it to Sprint Tech Support & at the store, it just suddenly started charging if I touched or bent it a certain way, like it had a short or bad connection.
Next, I visited a Sprint repair store & they just reset the "USB debugging" option to ENABLE/ON (again) & then the USB cable would work for pc sync and sometimes charge as well.
After 6 weeks I'm left with having to ditch the wall outlet adapter plug from the orig box, put a cig lighter/USB plug from my iTouch on it & plug it into a cig lighter wall plug adapter to charge at home in the wall.
I'm pretty tech savvy & I still can't tell if it's a software issue with the cable or the EVO port, or a physical issue with the cable or the port, or some combo of all 4 options. I love my EVO so I adapted & moved on, but definitely logged my complaint loudly with Sprint, insisting they extend my 30 days until the issue is 100% resolved.
I hope that my experience solves your own mystery.

Ok, so I restored the 2.1 backup, checked for update, downloaded update. When I hit install, it went into recovery. Half way through installation, I got the little android with an exclamation mark. It just sat there for 5 to 10 minutes (saw a progress bar before this but it stopped halfway through). I pulled the battery and turned the phone back on. Thank God, it's not bricked but I don't know why the update stopped halfway through. I did install the newest radios when I flashed cyanogen's rom and I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it not completing installation. I'm wondering if I should install an older radio and try again.
Any ideas?

Evo refuses to turn on

The last screen I saw was an android out of the box. I pulled the battery and now my device refuses to turn on. Bricked?
Also, if I send the device back to Sprint and claim that the OTA did this, will they know I was messing with root and roms? And how can I prevent this?

what exactly were you doing that led to this "bricking"?
Android out of the box that sounds like it was writting the radio if the battery was pulled that's a really bad thing

I flashed Fresh's 0.5.3 along with the new radio and noob's JIT patch all in one shot. Rebooted, hung at the Android out of the box. And I battery pulled.
I called Sprint and they told me to take it down to a service center. I'm looking through my microSD from remnants of rooting and flashing. Do you think they can salvage what's on the system ROM?

oh wow.. dude, that's a bit of a big bite. pulling the battery may have been the cause.
what sprint is most likely going to do is boot into the bootloader and wipe user data (hard reset). you can pull the "the ota update killed it" reason (as i told them before i got mine to start working again). you can't turn it on at all??
Refuses to power on or boot?
Power: does it charge? Or indicate that it does?
Keep holding power while putting in battery.
Connect usb cable with battery out of the phone.
Boot: hold vol down + power together to boot into boot.

if you plug it in the usb, is there a light to show that it's charging?
No LED light to indicate that it's charging. Not even the slightest hint that it's still alive. If I could've gotten to the bootloader all would've been well.
I'm worried that when I bring it to Sprint, they'll salvage what's on the ROM and realize that I've been rooting and flashing. I hope the ROM is unreadable. Maybe that's the reason why it won't turn on.

yea, it does sound like it. just to give you a heads up though, evos are pretty sold out everywhere. i went to the corporate store here in nj and i called them up as well, no dice. they are sold out.
I'll wait as long as I get a free replacement
EDIT: Back to my dreaded Samsung Instinct.
this just happened to me.
did op get an ETA on a new phone?
I called Sprint tech support and they told me to bring it in to a Sprint Service Repair store (Use the store locator and find one that repairs). I told them the update did it. Luckily, they had a replacement in stock. They took it out of a refurbished looking box, but it seems to be brand new . I hate to cheat the system and I sort of feel guilty about it. But that guilt is overridden by the fact that I have a brand new Evo in my hands .

[Q]Phone cannot be on, please help.

Morning hey, can use some help here. My EVO rooted, and using CM7 RC4. Unfortunately, it somehow died last night. Here is what happened. I hooked it up on my PC to charge the phone before I went to bed. I checked the batter status, there were still like 40% left. However, when I woke up. I found out the LED is not on (you know, orange light when you are charging). I tried to press power key to turn on screen, no response. So I took out the battery, and then put it back. After that, I hold the power key, no any response either. No LED light on even i tried to charge it again.
I guess i suppose to go to a local store to check what's going on unless you guys have some better idea there, please help.
Just in case that I have to go the store, will they check if the phone is rooted or not if i'm asking for a change or anything, and, i mean, it's under one year, so it should be under warranty still, right?
Thanks millions in adv here.
Good weekend, guys.
Try to get into the bootloader screen by pressing the down volume button while also pressing the power button. If you are able to start your device via this method, go ahead and select recovery and once you've enter into recovery, select reboot. If you are unsuccessful and are certain it's not a defective battery or something, take it back to Sprint and exchange it.

I hear ya. Take it to a nearby Sprint store for an exchange. If you can't get it to work, I doubt they will be able to. They should do the usual check for physical & water damages.

Agreed. I vaguely remember having a similar problem once and switching batteries (if you have a spare) fixed it. It seemed like the original battery had no charge. I charged it with my external battery charger and it booted up. Oddly enough after that both batteries worked just fine.
Your battery is toasted. It may have not charged, due to either a bad cable, or possibly a broken USB/charging port, and then the battery died to the point that it wont accept a charge. I would see if another battery will power on the device, and then see if you can determine what the charging issue is.

So is it the charging port that is the actual problem? Is that the malfunction, which is why the battery died to begin with?

Actually, before yesterday, I did noticed there are some problem at the charging port a few days ago, i mean, the port on the evo side, not cable. but i can adjust some angle so to charge the phone. I will try to ask one of friends to borrow his battery to do another check next week. if it's really the charging port problem, i m thinking to unroot my phone, and then ask for exchange it. Just not sure if the local store still can find out or not

Yea, if you were experiencing issues with it prior to this happening, then I would unroot it. They wont know, as long as you you turn it to S on, and don't let them see the root related stuff on your SD card (just remove your card). Hopefully Sprint will take care of it for you, but I've heard of some stores being a pain about that specific issue. Others have reported no issues at all,and sprint replaced it on spot. Just depends on the employees at that store.

Thanks, man. A little question though. About the part you mentioned "as long as you turn it to S on", how can I do that? I mean, i didn't do unroot before, but have read a few threads here and AndroidCentral months ago. If you have never used unrevoked forever (keep in mind that some other root methods still use unrevoked forever. Toasts method does not use it though) then an RUU should be all you need to turn s on, and return to stock. If you ever did use unrevoked forever, you just simply need to flash the unrevoked s on tool, in recovery. After that, run RUU as normal.

I believe when I rooted my phone, I used some app which is like automatically run steps of toasts method to root phone, called "simple3" or something.
will there be some damage or brick the phone if i flash unrevoked_foerver_son.zip on the phone which didn't use unRevoked method?
Sorry to be someone annoying here keeping asking you, but i'm curious, since i've been one of local stores already, will another store have my phone records showing my phone is rooted, and wont check it for me next time i m going?

I believe the method you're referring to was called simple root. I'm actually not too familiar with it. Flashing the s on tool should do no harm. I'm honestly not sure if you need it, due to the root method you used, but if you flash it, and s is still off, you probably just need to run the RUU, and you'll be good.

Sorry, one more question here. Correct me if i m wrong. most recent Unroot just need to flash RUU zip file (maybe after turn s-on by s-on.zip), then everything is done; Not like before, i have to connect my phone to PC, run some sync and RUU apps. Am I right?

You're welcome, and no need to be sorry.
Yes, you can put an RUU zip (PC36IMG.zip) on your SD card, and run it from the bootloader. That would negate you from needing to run the RUU from your computer. You only need to do it one way or the other.

Possibly Bricked T-Mobile T989

So I flashed the cm7 alpha that came out last night this morning. I wasn't getting calls so i turned it off and tried to reboot it into recovery. The phone never got into recovery (I told it to reboot into recovery from clockwork mod), and now it isnt powering on, at all. I've tried every key combination, recovery, download mode, letting it charge for HOURS, and still nothing.
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I'm trying to gather the files I need to see if odin will recognize it and possibly be able to restore it to stock. If I can't get it to work by tomorrow, I'm just going to go to the T-Mobile store.

Would it be possible that you tried so many combinations that the phone's battery has died? Have you tried plugging it in and seeing what happens?
charged for four hours and nothing.
Took it to a tmobile store and they're doing a warranty exchange since they couldn't get it to do anything either, even with a different battery.
Kind of curious as to what'll happen when I send it back since it has cyanogen mod 7 on it and its rooted. Then again, the phone won't boot, go into download mode, or recovery.
edit: I'm thinking the phone won't charge because of the custom kernel in cm7. Don't know how I would flash a kernel if I couldn't get it to boot though.
Dam,, too late
But for reference try!
Take the battery out and let it sit for a few min the put it back in and see if it boots.
If it still will not boot
Take the battery back out
Plug in the USB cable connected to the computer
Hold down the volume up and down then
Put the battery back in.
You should get the option: Volume UP / Volume Down for Reboot
Hit Volume UP and go get some Odin love!
I still have the phone, I'm gonna try this now. Will update with results.

I did not see you mention it, but did you try the "10 second" power button hold? You know it works when the phone vibrates 3 times. Simply hold the power button until it vibrates. It takes about 7-10 seconds (although when you think your phone is bricked, it feels like it is taking 5 minutes). If it vibrates, you are in the clear. You can usually get to recovery or odin from there. Try doing this on battery only first.
no cigar with the hold for ten seconds method on the power button.

It is really, REALLY difficult to brick a phone unless you are changing the radio (for example, flashing a wrong or corrupted radio). A kernel can hose your phone, but not brick it as you don't need a kernel to access recovery. A bad recovery could also brick your phone, but then you have download mode (Odin) to access that bypasses recovery. In other words, there are layers of protection or access points. We have not flashed any new radios for our phones yet, so you know that is not the problem. Having said all that, that does not mean you are not bricked.
To be clear on your position, you are getting no power response at all? Again, try this:
Unplug your phone;
take battery out (wait about a minute before replacing battery);
replace battery;
"10 second" hold until phone vibrates 3 times (or vibrates at all for that matter);
If you see no sign of life, then try the above process with phone plugged in (try plugged into computer and wall socket separately). Odin recognizes when you are plugged into computer and the boot process goes differently.
As for Odin bootup:
Load Odin;
Plug in your USB to computer;
try the volume/power boot up;
if that fails, try the "10 second" hold boot up with Odin running on your system and phone plugged in.
Outside of that, I can not think of any other way to get you to recovery or Odin.
I have flashed my android phones probably 150+ times in the last 2 and a half years and never made a brick. I thought I had, but was always able to get to recovery or bootloader (think Odin for HTC), and recover the phone. The only times I ever saw anyone truly brick the phone was when flashing the wrong or bad radio for their phone (radio is your 4G / cell receiver). So, walk through your processes to recover your phone in a methodical way and if that all fails, then return it. If you can't get it to go trying all these techniques, then T-mobile probably won't be able to as well and see that you rooted it.
Hope this helps.
Slightly off topic but if you send in a rooted phone for warranty (not insurance, warranty) they will charge you a full repair fee.

What happens when you pull your battery, put it back in and attempt to turn your phone on?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
@PorchSong, I've tried everything you said to no avail. I know its extremely hard to brick an android phone. Having had over 10 devices in the past year, all running custom roms, I've never bricked one either. This is why I find this so unbelievable, I usually don't make posts on XDA, not for lack of caring about the subject matter, but rather because I'd rather learn about it on my own to further my understanding on it.
Again, this is as bricked as I've ever seen something. The phone simply is unresponsive to every method I've tried.
@btyork, how would they know if the phone doesn't boot into recovery, download mode, or into regular android? I'm not saying that they couldn't. I'm just saying, what precautions could I take against them finding out. Trust me, if i could find a way to, I'd restore it to stock before I sent it back to them. (I still have the phone and will until december 6th, when they send me my new one, so we have a little bit of time to work on this)
@ mikeyinid, Nothing at all. Nothing in this thread has made the phone give even the slightest response.
The last thing I did was try to boot into clockwork mod, rather than boot with the key combination like I normally do, i did it directly from rom manager. Except, it never booted into recovery, so I pulled the battery and tried to start it again, from there it hasn't booted, or charged. I could've sworn the phone had at least a 30 percent charge when I was doing all this as well. Not the best for restoring from a backup in clockwork mod but I was in a bind as I was about to leave somewhere for roughly two hours and needed a functioning phone (cm7 did not let me make or receive calls, for whatever reason).
Are you seeing anything on the screen?

Are you sure you flashed cm7 for our phone? Sounds like a boot.img flashed to the wrong partition. I only know that because I bricked my first gs2 using the wrong mount point to flash a kernel. If it doesn't do anything at all, jig might work but idk. I just got a new one

Typically with Samsung phones, if you can get ANYTHING at all to show on the screen it is not bricked.
Do you have a G+ account? If I can see what is going on while I walk you through it it would be easier. Could possibly hold an open hangout so others can join in and help or just for informational purposes.
I have had soft bricks on my behold 2, vibrant and SGS2, over 100 times all together. Sometimes it takes a little fiddling, my SGS2 seemed a little more difficult only because of the relative simplicity of it compared to the others.

Slightly off topic but if you send in a rooted phone for warranty (not insurance, warranty) they will charge you a full repair fee.

That depends if they can tell or not.
Okay, well I'm going to try and fix it in Odin one more time tomorrow on my friends computer (I use a mac), so I'll report back on what happens. I'm thinking I didn't put it into download mode the right way when I tried it the other night. I remember having to do it for rooting the phone, but hadn't done it since, and since this is my first samsung phone other than the nexus s, I wasn't all that familiar with it. The google + idea might be a good one. I'm not sure how to go about setting that up, but I should be at my friends around like 12est tomorrow, so if anyone wants to set something up we can do that, or I can just report back. Either way, I'll come back to this thread and give a conclusion on what's happened.

Let me know, G+ is easy. Im out of class at 2est.
Just FYI. I ran into this exact same issue. After charging my phone all night and using it for about 5 minutes, I set it down then picked it up like 30 minutes later and received absolutely no responsiveness from the phone. It wouldn't even recognize the charger when I plugged it in.
I tried all the battery tricks, and reset tricks and nothing worked. So I took it into the T-Mobile store, assuming it was bricked, in an attempt to get it replaced. He simply plugged the phone into the stock charger that came with the phone and it indicated that the battery was just completely dead and needed a charge.
It turns out that the phone really didn't get a full charge after being plugged in all night to my GF's MT4G charger. Apparently this phone is picky about what charger is used. I'm sure you've already attempted this, but just make sure to plug it into the stock charger to see if you can at least get the charging battery image to pop up.
more like it wasn't plugged in properly to begin with
because that happened to me, even though it said "charging"... it was stuck at 43% for like 4+ hours, so i figured something must be wrong
and indeed it was, so i unplugged it, and plugged it back in, then voila! now it starts to charge as it was supposed to.
the phone is not picky by any means, i've used my old BB charges with it, the other HTC charger, the other samsung USB, the generic cheap chargers i get from Deal Extreme, etc
they all charges the phone just fine and fast
you do have to be careful when you plug it in, and make sure it's really charging

Quick Q: Jedi Mind Trick Brick? Phone unresponsive;Veteran User

phone wont boot at all after install. wont even go into download mode.
phone worked perfectly when i was running beastmod 3.0 i believe. i stayed inactive ever since.. i made sure i could get into download right before i went ahead to the jedi mind trick update. like i said, everything worked perfectly. tested out all button combos for recovery and download mode (even did the pulling the battery and plugging the usb method) with success before i updated. yes phone was on 100% battery . it was on the charger the whole night.
i logged back on because i felt like updating and read about Jedi Mind Trick. installed TWRP recovery as well a few days ago. i wiped everything of course, flashed, repaired , reboot. I got a black screen for awhile and let it sit for 30min. no response, so i pulled the battery and tried to turn on. phone wouldnt turn on so i tried to get into download mode and failed. phone is completely unresponsive.
what to do? i'm just stumped now. i was inactive, but by no means am i new to this.
Are you sure your battery has a good charge?

I see by no means are you a rookie but I will ask have you tried to plug your phone in to your pc and see if it makes a noise and recognizes it. Honestly I would assume prior to posting you probably tried everything so it may be unfortunate but you may have to send to JTAG or go through insurance.
Cant see a rom doing that to your phone? Unless you had some hardware failure
Have you tried using a usb jig to force it into download mode?

after flashing:
1) i did plug into 2 laptops(windows 7) and a 2 desktop(vista and xp). "tries" to install the drivers and then makes the fail noise.
2) tried to use the SGS2 toolkit as well.
prior to flashing:
1) phone mounted successfully to 1 laptop and 1 desktop. thats all i tried it on. i used my laptop to transfer the flash zips and my desktop to back up my internal memory since i havent done it in awhile.
2) everything just worked. my only gripe was that my phone was still on gingerbread and decided to update to to ICS
i'm just puzzled myself. i did try everything that i could think of to at least get the phone to turn on somehow. i even went back to sleep and put the phone on the charger hoping the phone would just magically turn on itself >_<
i know i've been super inactive for awhile, but it only took me a few of days to get myself back up to speed and catch up on the new information.
Also would like to add that i used 3 samsung micro usb cords(2x sgs2 and vibrant),jig,2htc cords(hd3 and mytouch 4g) and even my old nokia micro usb. No success but at last the laptop is detecting the phone when trying to install drivers and then fail.
I know i did not download thw wrong rom either its not like i go off to other phone sub-forums to look for stuff.
Chalk this up to bad luck and move on. Its not the ROM. Period. Like pmtr3 said, 20,000 downloads plus, and your the first one to say this happened. Sorry to hear about your phone.

i have no clue what happened. maybe some kind of freak hardware failure. i used to be so into flashing, but decided to use my phone as a phone instead of always flashing.
i did call TMo for a warranty replacement, but the SGS2 is supposedly on back order -____- they recommended an alternative device, but not details yet until they get back to me.
this isnt my first SGS2. i got mine during TMo's firesale on Nov. 19th. 3 days later, i exchanged under the 14day grace period it due to horrible data drops and robotic voice. The phone was stock at the time. Data drops made it impossible to download-on-the-go for whatever the professors assigned . 2nd one worked like a charm.

yes....i'm cutting my loses and doing a warranty exchange. Hopefully an SGS3 due to having 2 SGS2's. Usually, they will upgrade to the next device if your current device is not available and you had 2 replacements.
i'm trying to find my Good ol' G1 that never really failed me. i used to like using it from time to time whenever i had my vibrant just for nostalgia purposes.

[Q] Phone wont turn on

Hey everyone, the LG Optimus G phone in question is my girls phone and after she got out of work she tried to charge it but it ended up dying. After we got home we put it on her charger that came in the box with the phone and no led lights came on. So we tried to connect it to my HTC One charger and again nothing. I even tried to connect it to the laptop and nothing. Basically I havent gotten any sign of life from this phone and would like to ask this community for your help. Its no trouble to go to the store and asked for a new phone but I cant replace the music and photos that have been taken over time. If there are any cmd commands I can run to get it to turn on or at least give me a few minutes to get the data inside that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I think I know your problem but answers these first.
Can you get the Hardware keys to flash when you attempt to power on the device, either plugged into charger or not?
Did the phone get really hot when the device was charging and after it died?
If you phone isnt rooted and unlocked ignore this: If you have lgnpst, attempt to go into download mode, and flash teenybin, and see if you can get to recovery or boot into ROM.
The OG has a problem I like to call super drain. Your battery is so low the device won't power on, and a hardware reset is needed (pulling the battery). The good thing is you will still have your files if reset the battery, however depending on who you bought your warranty from, it may void it.

The hardware keys wouldn't flash at all plugged in or not. From what I recall the phone hasn't overheated at all either. But my phone is rooted and unlocked so ill look into the lgnpst when I come back home (2 hours.)

If her phone isnt unlocked, its probably battery drain which means battery removal to hard reset the phone( if you want the files). Did you buy a sprint warranty or a bestbuy warranty, or even some other warranty? If you are willing to lose the files on the phone, you can go straight to lgnpst. Join the optimus g irc. They can help you out.
Forum thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984620
Edit: so from what i understand, her phone is stock correct? And when you were saying "my phone is unlocked" you were referring to your htc right?

My Bad. I meant her phone is rooted and unlocked. I got the BestBuy warranty so ill probably try the battery removal and is the battery drain issue on all OGs or on some made from a certain date to another?

As far as i know all OG's And ya, wont be an issue with BB warranty. If her phone is unlocked, try tinybin first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230106
If you really cant get into download mode, its probably the battery. Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s22l8E92528
Also, to prevent this from happening again, tell her to keep her battery above 15-20% , as its better for it, and to just turn of her device if her batt gets to 5% or below. Basically this phone has bad battery power reporting, and it may say 5% but its actually 1 and it uses self to the point the hardware thinks there is something wrong. Also, i suggest not charging the device when its off if thats what she did. Its acts wonky for somepeople, idk why.

I disconnected the battery and had it sit for about 20min or so and when I connected it back nothing would happen. I tried going into download mode and nothing. But from what I recall doesn't tinybin need for me to be in download mode for it to work? I'm gonna take this phone back to best buy when I get it to work but all I want is our pictures and what not from the phone.

Downside of a phone without a microsd card slot. Probably for the future upload ALL pictures to the cloud if your phone doesn't have a micro sd card slot. Hardware failure = you lose your picture or it becomes expensive to fix.

Your best bet is go on the irc and ask for help. This may not be a battery issue. BTW, did you have the phone plugged into your PC? It must be plugged in to go into download mode.
