[Q]Phone cannot be on, please help. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Morning hey, can use some help here. My EVO rooted, and using CM7 RC4. Unfortunately, it somehow died last night. Here is what happened. I hooked it up on my PC to charge the phone before I went to bed. I checked the batter status, there were still like 40% left. However, when I woke up. I found out the LED is not on (you know, orange light when you are charging). I tried to press power key to turn on screen, no response. So I took out the battery, and then put it back. After that, I hold the power key, no any response either. No LED light on even i tried to charge it again.
I guess i suppose to go to a local store to check what's going on unless you guys have some better idea there, please help.
Just in case that I have to go the store, will they check if the phone is rooted or not if i'm asking for a change or anything, and, i mean, it's under one year, so it should be under warranty still, right?
Thanks millions in adv here.
Good weekend, guys.

Try to get into the bootloader screen by pressing the down volume button while also pressing the power button. If you are able to start your device via this method, go ahead and select recovery and once you've enter into recovery, select reboot. If you are unsuccessful and are certain it's not a defective battery or something, take it back to Sprint and exchange it.

I did try that way to get in the bootloader. Unfortunately, it didn't work, I mean, it's just like the whole screen cant lit on. no even "HTC EVO4G" white screen.

I hear ya. Take it to a nearby Sprint store for an exchange. If you can't get it to work, I doubt they will be able to. They should do the usual check for physical & water damages.

Have you tried plugging it into the wall charger?

Agreed. I vaguely remember having a similar problem once and switching batteries (if you have a spare) fixed it. It seemed like the original battery had no charge. I charged it with my external battery charger and it booted up. Oddly enough after that both batteries worked just fine.

Your battery is toasted. It may have not charged, due to either a bad cable, or possibly a broken USB/charging port, and then the battery died to the point that it wont accept a charge. I would see if another battery will power on the device, and then see if you can determine what the charging issue is.

just back from the local store. yes, buckely, you were totally right. they checked my phone, batteries toasted, they just tried another battery, all things works well. I cannot do exchange on local store, cuz they knew it's rooted phone, I have to call HTC for exchange.

So is it the charging port that is the actual problem? Is that the malfunction, which is why the battery died to begin with?

Actually, before yesterday, I did noticed there are some problem at the charging port a few days ago, i mean, the port on the evo side, not cable. but i can adjust some angle so to charge the phone. I will try to ask one of friends to borrow his battery to do another check next week. if it's really the charging port problem, i m thinking to unroot my phone, and then ask for exchange it. Just not sure if the local store still can find out or not

Yea, if you were experiencing issues with it prior to this happening, then I would unroot it. They wont know, as long as you you turn it to S on, and don't let them see the root related stuff on your SD card (just remove your card). Hopefully Sprint will take care of it for you, but I've heard of some stores being a pain about that specific issue. Others have reported no issues at all,and sprint replaced it on spot. Just depends on the employees at that store.

Thanks, man. A little question though. About the part you mentioned "as long as you turn it to S on", how can I do that? I mean, i didn't do unroot before, but have read a few threads here and AndroidCentral months ago. Point is I just know it should use RUU. you think you can give me some links which instruct me to do that? I really appreciate it.
btw, I didn't use UnrEVOked to root my phone,

If you have never used unrevoked forever (keep in mind that some other root methods still use unrevoked forever. Toasts method does not use it though) then an RUU should be all you need to turn s on, and return to stock. If you ever did use unrevoked forever, you just simply need to flash the unrevoked s on tool, in recovery. After that, run RUU as normal.

I believe when I rooted my phone, I used some app which is like automatically run steps of toasts method to root phone, called "simple3" or something.
will there be some damage or brick the phone if i flash unrevoked_foerver_son.zip on the phone which didn't use unRevoked method?
Sorry to be someone annoying here keeping asking you, but i'm curious, since i've been one of local stores already, will another store have my phone records showing my phone is rooted, and wont check it for me next time i m going?

I believe the method you're referring to was called simple root. I'm actually not too familiar with it. Flashing the s on tool should do no harm. I'm honestly not sure if you need it, due to the root method you used, but if you flash it, and s is still off, you probably just need to run the RUU, and you'll be good.

Thanks millions for your time and patience, your instruction is really helpful to me. I guess i might just run s-on.zip first, then flash RUU.
Sorry, one more question here. Correct me if i m wrong. most recent Unroot just need to flash RUU zip file (maybe after turn s-on by s-on.zip), then everything is done; Not like before, i have to connect my phone to PC, run some sync and RUU apps. Am I right?

You're welcome, and no need to be sorry.
Yes, you can put an RUU zip (PC36IMG.zip) on your SD card, and run it from the bootloader. That would negate you from needing to run the RUU from your computer. You only need to do it one way or the other.

Again, thank you, buckley, so much.
Since i've been one of local stores already, they used another battery and powered up my phone, they already know my phone is rooted. I m curious if this will be some record, which is bad cuz another store will find out immediately and decline to exchange for me?

Evo refuses to turn on

The last screen I saw was an android out of the box. I pulled the battery and now my device refuses to turn on. Bricked?
Also, if I send the device back to Sprint and claim that the OTA did this, will they know I was messing with root and roms? And how can I prevent this?

what exactly were you doing that led to this "bricking"?
Android out of the box that sounds like it was writting the radio if the battery was pulled that's a really bad thing
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I flashed Fresh's 0.5.3 along with the new radio and noob's JIT patch all in one shot. Rebooted, hung at the Android out of the box. And I battery pulled.
I called Sprint and they told me to take it down to a service center. I'm looking through my microSD from remnants of rooting and flashing. Do you think they can salvage what's on the system ROM?

oh wow.. dude, that's a bit of a big bite. pulling the battery may have been the cause.
what sprint is most likely going to do is boot into the bootloader and wipe user data (hard reset). you can pull the "the ota update killed it" reason (as i told them before i got mine to start working again). you can't turn it on at all??
Refuses to power on or boot?
Power: does it charge? Or indicate that it does?
Keep holding power while putting in battery.
Connect usb cable with battery out of the phone.
Boot: hold vol down + power together to boot into boot.

if you plug it in the usb, is there a light to show that it's charging?
No LED light to indicate that it's charging. Not even the slightest hint that it's still alive. If I could've gotten to the bootloader all would've been well.
I'm worried that when I bring it to Sprint, they'll salvage what's on the ROM and realize that I've been rooting and flashing. I hope the ROM is unreadable. Maybe that's the reason why it won't turn on.

yea, it does sound like it. just to give you a heads up though, evos are pretty sold out everywhere. i went to the corporate store here in nj and i called them up as well, no dice. they are sold out.
I'll wait as long as I get a free replacement
EDIT: Back to my dreaded Samsung Instinct.
this just happened to me.
did op get an ETA on a new phone?
I called Sprint tech support and they told me to bring it in to a Sprint Service Repair store (Use the store locator and find one that repairs). I told them the update did it. Luckily, they had a replacement in stock. They took it out of a refurbished looking box, but it seems to be brand new . I hate to cheat the system and I sort of feel guilty about it. But that guilt is overridden by the fact that I have a brand new Evo in my hands .

no...battery was nearly fully charged...and battery has been out for about 20 minutes...im thinking its bricked...anyone got any ideas? also...what do can i say when i take it into sprint..
I Think its bricked :/
But about your phone if it is bricked, i would say i lost it and keep the battery and sd and pay insurance to get a new one.
its hundred bucks for a new one...i was installing a htc radio,,,thinking its covered under manufactured warranty,,,also got 2 batteries for 8 dollars so not a great deal lol

Yea its legal and your friend is probably a cool dude and don't care and will warranty them but unfortunately they don't have to honor the warranty if user changes / modifies software that was not ota or provided by HTC or Sprint. Use at your own risk.
I would'nt tell them you tried messing with the software. I would just say you woke up this morning tried to turn on the phone and it would not turn on. Tell them you turn your phone off every night when you go to bed, keep it simple.
It's void if they know about it. That's what they said on g4 atots when they did the special on jailbreaking and rooting. But will they know if it don't turn on? I assume they (htc) would just flash new software on it and give it out as refurbished.
alright thanks guys...but it was the htc software lol...new radio update...idk,,maybe that dont count since someone had to extract it.,..but thanks guys
Its a long shot but wait a couple days for the update to come out and tell them you tried to update and it did that......

Yes, it is legal via an exemption to the DMCA to root/jailbreak a phone - HOWEVER, if you break the phone by doing this, it isn't going to be covered under the warranty. The warranty still only covers normal use, and hacking, however legal, isn't normal use. Sorry dude. Magnusson Moss Warranty Act, look it up. Warranty doesn't cover when you break the thing yourself, only when a manufacturer / latent defect causes a failure.
It really depends on which sprint store you go to. I always go to a 3rd party Sprint repair shop near my house. I had a rooted hero to 2.1; when the evo came out i bought one and took the hero to the sprint shop to update to the official 2.1 version to give to my dad. When they tried updating it, the phone would never fully boot so they gave us a brand new one. yes they new it was rooted and had a custom rom, i had talked to them that day and before about it and they didnt care.
anyway, best of luck in this situation. If you dont have a cool sprints guys than i would take sprink's advice and say you woke up and it wouldnt turn on. if there is no damage, what can they do?
^ Good luck with that...legal or not, he screwed the phone up. Not a warranty issue...
Just seen this thread they might be able to help you out.

Same thing happened to me...
I tried to restart my Evo today and the same thing happened. I took it to the Sprint store and the tech there said that the power button actually failed, and that they had to ship me a replacement. From what he was saying this has happened on a few of the Evos.
Ouch brick. Bring it back play stupid. I bet the issue was using rom manager to flash a radio. A radio isnt a ROM its the MOST IMPORTANT piece of code the phone has and a sure fire way to brick it if you mess it up. I wouldnt use rom manager other than to boot into recovery

[Q] My G2 won't turn on. Have I bricked it?

Hello, I'm sorry to be posting on a matter like this, but can someone please help me?
Before you read, let me clarify a few things: I am not a noob when it comes to the rooting scene. I'm an avid Linux user, and I know most of the key commands, I've rooted both my HTC Magic and HTC Dream without using a one-click app like SuperOneClick or Z4Root, I did it all from scratch. I'm well aware of the dangers that come with rooting, and I always take special precautions when it comes to flashing certain stuff. The only custom ROMs I've used are Virtuous and Cyanogenmod.
I've had my G2 for a little less than a full month. I perma-rooted it, I got S-OFF on it, and all that stuff. Today, I was attempting to unroot my G2 using theunlockr's tutorial, however after i finished entering the last mmcblk0p17 command, and I turned the device off, I accidentally tripped on the charging cord, and it came off. The charging LED still was orange even though the cable wasn't connected.
When I tried turning the phone on into HBoot mode, it wouldn't boot up.
When I tried turning on the device regularly, it's not turning on either.
I tried a few battery pulls, and I left the device untouched for a few hours, and still nothing. Is there a chance I bricked my device? Or is it one of the G2's many dysfunctions that I've read about on the community forums when I was searching for a solution to my problems.
All help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

I wonder why it won't turn on though. I kind of did the same thing but I had my battery fully charged. I guess since it won't turn on am guessing that something happened during the flashing of stock Rom process but still you should still be able to power up your phone. Did it drop when you triped?

First off it wasn't CM7 people blame roms for hardware issues not right. Your phone power button is spanked. You could either break your volume button to and they won't get it to turn on they will just swap it out . Don't blame a rom for the issue like people claim roms break cameras not true.
I'm not blaming the Rom simply saying that's what im on and not sure what caused it to go out. But any ideas on how to uproot without the power button that's my main thing. I love cm but my concern isn't the Rom but getting a working phone.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Easy way to reboot without your power button & without using adb, is to just download rom manager. Once in rom manager select reboot recovery. Once you are in recovery you can use the volume buttons and select reboot system. Hold down the down volume keys immediately after this and it should bring you into the HBOOT screen.
Put this PC36IMG.zip on your sd card and run it. http://bit.ly/FroyoRUU
Note if you flashed thru unrevoked method please run the S-ON tool first
Go into recovery and flash the S-On zip first before running the PC36IMG
link for s-on here http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever-son.zip

ok my apologies didn't realize I would be taken so literally. I was not trying to offend I simply don't know why it stopped. Its not just the power button the plastic piece. You can do a battery pull but when you put the battery back in of course it powers up..its just when the phone has powered up and goes to sleep the only way to wake it up is to call it. I can hear the notifications etc coming in but the power button is unresponsive. I took my phone to the Sprint I always go to those guys are cool. He said it was something that went out in the circuitry of the power button and I need a new phone he said get it unrooted bring it back and Ill replace it. That's all I am simply trying to do. Blaming a ROM was not my attention, didn't know it would be taken so defensively. I thought about those things you guys said I even fast booted into recovery and got stuck because of course I couldn't hit the power but to enter so thus another battery pull. What if I get the HTC Andrioid Rom utility update cant i do that using HTC Sync then it should recognize its rooted, unroot it and put it back on 2.1 which I will then have to update to 2.2? Im trying to figure any work around out I can to make this happen. Thanks for you guys input...
It's all good man just some people blame roms for there problems just making sure you know some of the older evos had power button issues.
I know the problem your talking about is common on the HTC touch pro 2 I have one of those and it has the SOD problem phone will not wake .
Unless you call it or pull battery it doesn't hang all the time. Called screen of death phone won't wake up.
I really don't know how you will be able to unroot did u use unrevoked 3 or another program some of the unroot programs have a exe you can run if you can get into bootloader . get the latest radio and Ruu bundle and try that read up on it.
Really depends on what you used to root it tho.
If all else fails go through asurion you could break it beyond repair and pay 100 to get another one if your lucky you might get a new one.
I may have used unrevoked but to be honest Im not sure I rooted back in August or sept

My power button has failed too. I am not worried about taking it in with the phone rooted because this is a hardware failure and has nothing to do with the software. The button seems to be stuck on because even after taking out the battery, the phone turns back on as soon as it is put back in.

My sentiments exactly however, when I took it in and they put the battery back in they wouldnt exchange it because of the root. The tech said I cant send this phone in and its clearly rooted something in the root could have shorted out the button...I gave him the dude really look, but although its a hardware issue they wouldn't do it

That's why I keep telling people to unroot when they take a device in for servicing...

Well that is what I have been attempting to do...every one is soooooo tech saavy but I seemed to have baffled everyone with the non use of the power button to unroot.
By chance do you know how to unroot without the power button. I am on CM so not a sense based rom therefore I cannot go through HTC Sync to try and unroot that way. If you know how please please I beg of you enlighten me.
Interesting. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Well without the power button, you may not get s-on, because you need the power button to select. By any chance do you have like a jeweler's flat tip screw driver? Something small that you may be able to press on the button harder than your finger normally would, since then it may register?
But unrooting, yes, it can be done by removing the sdcard from the phone, mounting to a pc via card adapter, placing the PC36IMG of the 3.70 RUU on the phone, and booting into the bootloader. But again, you'd need the power button to make the selection...so a small flat tip item may be your savior here.
Ok...just got home. The rep asked me if the phone was rooted, and I told him it was. He then told me that rooting the phone voids the warranty. I said I can take it home and unroot it, but he asked me to hold on while he talked to the tech. The tech agreed to look at it. Three hours later, I returned and the tech said he tried a few things (compressed air, motherboard connection) but was unable to fix it. Replacement phone ordered.
Ok here is my update. No screw driver would work for the power button it wasnt the plastic piece it was the wiring or whatever going to the main board of the phone that was no longer functioning. Sprint still was like nope this isnt good enough I said screw it. Got a friends phone went to be Best Buy expecting a fight but NOPE those guys were great. He looked at my phone he tried the power button did my work around. He said yup hardware issue. He then said your rooted huh? I hesitantly said yes...but...he interrupted its cool just needed to know so we can can handle it and get it back to where it needs to be before we send it out. He then purused my phone after asking did I mind. He said hmmmm cm7 gb you like it? He said sweet boot screen where did you get that was it flashed normally? I was like uhh yeah he then whipped out his phone I believe he was on MIUI he said he was planning on flashing CM7 well after all the geek talk we exchanged my EVO is order and I should have a new one by Thursday! SO HA Sprint on you! YAY I'm so excited! They were also impressed with my geek talk probably because im a girl but whatever. So I guess two happy endings! Thank God

I Think I Bricked My Phone.. Any Advice?

Hey guys . I Picked up a three month old galaxy this morning. I have had problems rooting before but always managed to fix them but this I cannot figure out. Here is exactly what I did and what happened.
1.First I rooted my phone using GalaxyS3RootUSCanadaMac.
2. Downloaded the following, superuser, ezunlock, and rom manager.
3. Flashed clokworkrecovery through rom manager.
4. Unlocked the bootloader with ezunlock
5. Tried to reboot into recovery via clockwork and it would just hang and never reboot.
6. Decided to do a restart , so I clicked power on the right hand side and selected restart.
7. Fell asleep and woke up to a dead phone.
I cannot get it to boot at all , not even in download mode. I get no lights or vibrations when trying to boot. If I remove the battery and hook the usb cord in I get a red light at the top but not with the battery in.
Any info on what I might have done wrong or what I can try to do to fix it would be great.
Thanks in advance guys.

This is completely inapplicable to the i747m, and the reason your phone's bricked.
Unless you can somehow get into download mode, you're going to need a JTAG to recover it.

Any suggestions n how to get into download mode? Also I have a usb JTAG from programming cable boxes but Im not sure if it will work?
I believe I read about someone else who used this. The unlocker is made for the Verizon variant. You will need JTAG service to get your phone up and running.

That's fraud big time! If you would have read up you wouldnt be in this situation. In all honestly I hope you have to come out of pocket because stunts like this is what makes those who do have REAL problems with their phone get the run around from companies.

Looks like Samsung has come through and is going to warranty it. It was repaired today by having the board replaced. Hopefully I will have it back next week.

That's not fraud? That's called a warranty

Wow. Why can't they people read?? This is the reason companies don't want to to warranty anything because of crap like this.
