I have wrestled with this phone, and searching this forum and others looking for an answer and none have been found yet. Here's my situation.
I own two HTC DINC2's. My wife's wouldn't power on. Talked with Verizion Tech Support and they led me into HBOOT to try to clear cache, then to factory reset. After each attempt I get the HTC White Screen, then nothing. I must pull the battery out to reboot. We took it to a Verizon store, and they said there was nothing they could do. (grumble)
When I plug in my phone to my computer, I get no USB support. Windows 7 says the USB device has malfunctioned. So most directions to root or flash the firmware instructions are of no help. The phone will also not charge. When I plug it in, I get the amber light for about 30 seconds, then it shuts off.
HBOOT menu reads as follows...
**** LOCKED ****
VIVO_W XB SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-0.98.0000
RADIO -1.09.01.0312

I have formatted the SDCard and tried a new PG32IMG.zip file. It will load, but the result is the same. I have tried this with a completely different SD Card, with the same result.
Is there anything else I can try, or is Verizon right...I have a paperweight...??
I would probably replace the Charging port

I take it that the phones are not on warranty anymore?
Did these phones work in the past?
Of course, different outlets and USB chargers may help with the charging issue. Although I'm sure you've tried this.
For your phone, try a different battery maybe?
If all else fails, you could try to manually replace the charge port. :/
Try booting up a Linux Live CD and trying to USB connect with that.
Does ADB work?
For your wife's phone...the only thing that comes to mind is rooting and flashing another ROM.
If it makes you feel better, you aren't the only one with issues.
My screen digitizer is failing. (Thread in Q&A - "Phantom Touch Input")
No, no more warranty says both Verizon and HTC. My wife's phone worked perfectly til about a week and a half ago.
I have tried about 3 different USB charging cables...both those that came with the phone and other micro usb cables.
I have tried both of the batteries, both fully charged to no avail.
I don't have any experience with Linux, and don't think it would change the PC recognizing the phone.
The computer will not recognize anything with the USB, so getting to ADB is a problem.
How can I root/flash a rom without the computer?
I'm afraid that if I replace the charging port, I may still need to replace other things. The Charger doesn't really explain why the phone won't get past the white HTC Screen, right?

do you have these htc drivers installed
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
Yes...the drivers are installed. I have another identical phone and the USB is recognized as normal. The affected phone is not recognized at all.
When I plug it in, the amber light comes on for 20 seconds (I've timed it) then goes off. Phone will no longer do anything without having the battery taken out.

Lastly, have you tried another computer?
We'll go from there. I'm afraid Verizon is shafting you. I hope you can escalate.
Yes, I have tried on my Lenovo laptop, and on a Dell laptop. Both will recognize my (working phone) and not recognize my wife's (non-working phone)

Good to know. I will be honest- I'm not entirely sure what do, however I will continue to propose options as they come to mind. Hopefully someone with a little more expertise will see this and will be able to provide some valuable nuggets of knowledge.

so, when I connect my excalibur to my PC it shows up under USB Devices as an unknown device, I will show pictures once the phone is done resetting, now I was just going to RMA it but I only spent $100 on the phone itself.
First the lady over the phone tried to convince me not to RMA it and just said "oh well just put things on the [SD] card if you cannot connect to your computer."
Then after arguing for 30 min they want me to pay to ship it back, pay to ship the new one here only after I had already spent money to expedite the shipping when I originally ordered the unit (not to mention I had to wait another week as it was because they were "out of stock" B$), and I only get the subtotal back, so a Month later I will have spent about $180 on this phone, F*** that.
Few extra things: In bootloader mode I can get the unit to be recognized so that I can put on a new ROM, so I did that and I still cannot connect the unit to my PC. Also i tried this on a different PC as well. I can't remember if I left anything out......oh yeah and I did change the connection under USB to PC (even after Rom format). If there is anything else you might be able to think of or come up with this would be appreciate.
Specs:
Windows XP SP3
ActiveSync 4.5
S620(that won't connect)
Also:I am going to trying Vista and 7 x86 to see if either will work but if there are any suggestions please do so to help.
Sorry if I keep saying "Unit" instead of "Excalibur" or "Dash" it's a habit that I picked up from working at Geek Squad :S
since you know your usb cable is good, uninstall and reinstall activesync, it happens to me sometimes when i get the three audible dings instead of the two when i connect my device.
welll.....
I did that too, I uninstalled active sync, reinstalled it. No go, then tried it on the other computer with a fresh install of active sync with nothing paired to it or anything and that's how I got it up to re-flash to ROM(only in bootloader)....
Update: Will not be recognized by XP, Vista, or 7......soooooo it's gotta be the phone

Why not try using WM5torage set to SD Card 'mode'? If that won't work, then it is a sign that maybe the USB component on the phone is damaged

suggestion?? have you tried to connect via bluetooth? and is your cable a sda cable of just a standard 5pin usb/mini-b cable. I had previously purchased a usb/mini-b cable for a blackberry and it worked with my dash for about a week then it stopped working, i couldn't sync on any computers all i got was you described; an unknown device. I went to tmobile and got a SDA/MDA data cable (the end it actually shaped like the phone plugin not the mini-b shape) and since then i have had no issues with it. its worth checking out at least.
seee
he actually game me some advice , thank you sir. I will try because the one they sent me was a mini-B USB adaptor that said it was compatible, I am going to see if I can get my hand on a actual HTC cable, any suggestions on where to get a legit one?

just head into a tmobile store they can not resell returned parts in cell phones so any data cables that come with a phone can not be resold, this means that they are legitamitly extras and they should be able to give you one free of cost. if not they are about $20 new

maybe if u can hook sd card to comp.
I think I read somewhere in the DIncI forum about running ADB through WiFi and doing console commands.
Not sure how it worked out tho.
When I got my first DIncII, The cable was a mother to pull out so I went to VZW corp store and they gave me a new cable.
Have you tried different cables/PCs?
Have you tried ##3424# send? You need a sense based ROM to use that, but it should get you into DIAG mode to use ADB with minimal OS interference.
The port its connected with a ribbon cable so try with back off holding the port in different positions.
Applying slight force in different directions and holding it there.
Maybe poster putty would help to lock it to that position long enough to achieve the ADB.
Good luck.
im experiencing the same issue, i cannot get my computer to recognize the phone after trying multiple cables. wireless abd seems to require root access to get it working and i have already restored to unrooted 2.2. how thorough does verizon check phones they receive back? will they notice an unlocked bootloader?
Not sure if Verizon will have the phone long enough to care - do they check returned phones or just forward them to HTC for the standard refurbishing process?
The USB/charging port just went in our 6-month old Incredible 2, and it's only now that I've found threads at Verizon's website of many others complaining about this model having a chronic issue with this portion of its hardware. So, I guess we'll have to expect more refurbished replacements until the two-year contract is due. Disappointing, especially in light of how well it operates when the port is working as expected.
- ooofest
I ended up just screaming and holding the USB cable at an obscure angle to restore the connection
As for the wireless ADB and over tcp and whatnot, so far what i've found has only been theoretical, nobody has posted anything about it working in reality, and this stuff is far beyond my knowledge
Forgive me if this is the wrong forum for this but today I was just playing a game on phone when it just crashed,
I thought no big deal I'll just reboot so went to reboot, however it just went into a bootloop and would not reboot. Then I thought ok CWR but I could not boot into this. I then decided to use adb mode to flash back to stock. However in this process adb froze and would not respond anymore and kind of had a blue tearing around everything on the screen. I ended up having to pull the battery.
Now however the phone won't respond at all, Won't turn on, won't go into download mode or anything. I can get my computer and laptop to regonize it when I plug it on with no battery but just says searching for driver for OMAP 4440 then fails. I'm pretty sure I have bricked it and am quite sad. Just looking for confirmation.
Its still alive, I'm pretty sure someone with a bit more knowledge will stop by and help you, but it appears to just be a soft brick.

Just to possibly give you some hoe look into Odin. When I had my fascinate this was the way to fix things. Being made by Samsung I'm sure it'll be similar. Do some research into that. Just got my nexus two days ago so I'm still fresh

Not connected to PC - no ADB, no ODIN. Plus, his phone failed while playing game (under heavy load) which gives me a reason to think it's a hardware fault. I would say last chance is to try USB Jig.
If you can get to the bootloader, you should be able to flash a stock Google image

It's a hard brick, mate...
How to fix?:
take the back cover off your phone!
Remove battery, then plug in via USB (computer)
Leave for 3 hours!!! (With battery still unplugged) This should, in a way, "reset" your phone.
Once the three hours are over, plug in battery, and unplug USB.
Press PWR+VOL Down
Wait untill hpone boots into Odin mode then flashstock firmware from Samsung website.I
If this doesn't work, then I'd send it to Mobile Tech Videos, they kann unbrick it via JTAG...
Let me know if it worked, pleasse

He didn't mean playing, as in games. He meant playing around with his phone, root etc....
Thanks for the advice guys, gives me a small amount of hope. I will try leaving it plugged into my computer for 3 hours + and see what happens. Will post back with results.
Otherwise I may try get my hands on a jig. Would it be the same one from the Galaxy SII?
It worked? I'll explain you what happened to me:
I was playing for 2 hours on the game cartoon wars. After that, the phone was a little hot, I went to the desktop and locked the phone. 20 minutes later, I try to unlock the phone and I see the Google logo, and nothing responds. I pulled out the battery several times, tried to enter recovery, fastboot, normal boot. Always freezes. Stock 100%, the mobile has one week.... I think I will have to send it to the SAT....
I have my old HTC magic awaiting me, I gave my galaxy S to my sister...
Brick is such a misused word...
hmm
well if your running with verizon, which i doubt many of you are (prob using the GSM Gnex) you could just as easily bring it to them, lie, and theyll replace your phone. had a droid X, cracked the screen, told verizon it had a hardware fault, and they replaced it with no questions. verizon employees are pretty stupid

You are a horrible person and one of the reasons why decent, hardworking people can't have nice things.
So none of the methods suggested have work so looks like I'm going to have to get a Jig and hope that will do the trick otherwise I'm doomed I think.
when you guys say jig do you mean using resistors on the micro usb port to boot like with the old captivate? i still have the resistors mirco usb plug for that phone, it saved me from a hard brick a few times.

Yup.
Hello to all. I am emperiencing a number of problems on my deb. Some are listed below. These problems were not experienced in the first 3 months:
1) THE BATTERY
I cannot use the tablet while charging. It does not charge i.e. It needs to be in a specific position to charge.
Also, I am experiencing Huge Battery Drain. It charges 5-15% in 2:30 hours. This happened after I used the PA 4.5 beta 1(Using MultiROM. This stayed even after I deleted the ROM And reverted back to stock.
2) THE SIM CARD
I don't know when it happened but the sim was working fine before. I didn't use the sim very often except for validating whatsapp. But as I tried to validate, no messages arrived at my nexus. I thought that the sim had become defective. But it worked just fine in other phones!
I even contacted Asus about this but they asked me to first factory reset it. I decided it was too big a deal and did not.
3)THE OTG CABLE
My Nexus recognized the otg usb drive at first. When I tried to use it again, It just wouldn't recognize it. Tried using a mouse too (had worked before). Did not work. Tried on different roms. Nope.
4) USB COMPUTER CONNECTIONS
I had used it before to copy files from my laptop to my nexus. It worked fine. After some time, I tried to do it again, the pc would recognize it sometimes say it was unknown sometimes say it was Nexus 7 but wouldn't install drivers. Tried using Wug's to no avail.
Today, I tried using it on my other pc. The drivers installed just fine, but there was no sign of it in My Computers. In Wug's, the device was able to operate fully! It tried using various backup commands, and they worked! But the push/pull command did not work. Though that turned out to be a problem of the toolkit as I pulled the files I need with ADB PULL command in cmd.
So, as some of these problems are hardware related, I am thinking of giving it back to Asus. I am rooted and performing The Wug's Flash Stock +Unroot Option Now. Please if you have any advice, post it here.
THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Judging from the symptoms, you likely have a bad usb port. I wouldn't say the cable since your otg cable yielded the same result. According to some, it's really fragile when you handle it rough. The port is soldered to the I/O board so either you (1) try to bend back the inside pins; or (2) replace it if you're skillful enough with your iron; or (3) replace the board (ouch!). It's a shame if you have to choose (3) since that means throwing the board away for just one bad component. Litter.
1) The inside pin is fine. The cable just seems really loose. Though the other cables have the same effect.
2)I dont have the skill.
3)Why should I waste any money if It is under warranty?
And usb otg should come at least once, as the tab does charge once maintained in a specific condition.
And As the tablet charges when its connected to a pc, its not a problem of bad usb port

I didn't realize your tab was still under warranty. Nevertheless, the fact that the cables fit loosely suggest that the housing is not in good condition and the pins, in turn, while not damaged, make poor connection (to wit, the tab charged only if held in a certain position). If the tab consistently charges while connected to a PC, then you're right, the fault lies elsewhere, like a jarred battery connector, or the other USB end, or the charger itself. This, however, leaves the OTG issue unexplained. Warranty seems your best bet for the moment, however. Good luck.
I don't think it can be a mistake of mine, so Asus will definitely have to replace it.
Thanks for your support though!

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers.
I have installed kids and then smart switch.
My old note 4 that was defective shows up in Windows but the replacement shows as 'unknown device'
I tried safe mode to un install drivers and different USB ports.
Is my device defective? Any ideas?
Thanks!
Maybe try going to developer options and checking if usb debugging is turned off. Try turning it on. Try a different usb port. Try to switch between different usb modes in the notification area when connected. Last but not least factory reset your phone in recovery mode and try connecting it after.
I am experiencing the same problem but I have another problem as well. My phone is an unrooted Galaxy Note 4 running 5.0.1 w/ VRU2BOG5 build. I have tried just about all the USB ports on my computer and get the same result, "unknown device". I have uninstall and reinstalled kies and the associated drivers and still get the same result. I have factory reset the phone and still the same. I was even able to do a firmware upgrade and initialization via kies and still the same problem.
The other problem I am faced with is I can not seem to get any OTG cable to work on my device. Could this be hand in hand?
I am not sure if you (the OP) have noticed but when you installed kies, have you gotten an error for your ethernet controller under other devices in your device manager?
I really like the phone but if I can't 1) root it or 2) transfer data via the usb port (especially through the OTG cable), the phone is useless to me. Any help would be very appreciated.
The USB port may be defective. I replaced mine on my note 2 myself for cheap. But if the phone is still under warranty let them deal with it. You guys tried different cables/computers?
