So my phone was in my pocket and it was getting hot so i took it out, and saw it on the boot animation. I left it and it didn't go past this boot screen so i held in the power button to restart it, and it restarted. Only when i turned it on, my 4G plan was active, and I could no longer use the notification pull down bar. I can swipe down from the top once, but not a second time to access quick settings. Also my circle and square (home and multitask) buttons are not working, the phone vibrates when i touch them but nothing happens, only the triangle (back) button works. On the lock screen, there is no longer an option to swipe right for the camera, and double pressing the home button to activate the camera does nothing, it just turns the display on and off. I have tried putting the phone into safe mode to see if an app was causing the problem, but the problem persists, when i turned my phone back on normally, the widgets on my home screen had disappeared. I tried switching accounts to the guest account but it says 'switching to guest' and then seems to fail to switch to the guest account and quickly says 'switching to (main account name)', before returning to my main account. Any ideas, I really need the problem fixed, thanks in advance!
stock rom??
my advice if you cant fix it try to do a factory reset do it like your last resource cause it wipes all data
another advice you should always have a backup you never know when **** like this happens
Thanks for the reply.
Yeah I am running stock ROM, so strange that this has happened.
I am struggling to backup photos etc as i would usually enable usb debugging and just click and drag the folders over to my PC, but it says on my settings page that 'developer options are not available to this user', so I am having to use another photo backup website, which is annoying.
This happened to be when I manually updated from MMB29Q to MHC19J without flashing MMB29V first. Only solution was to boot into TWRP to backup my files and then factory reset.

I've managed to muller up my phone. I've been switching back and forth between ADW Launcher and HTC Sense for a little while.
Today, I was going through all my apps to make some space, and I cleared the data in HTC Sense. The next time I went home using Sense, it force-closed. Then for some stupid reason I thought it would be a good idea to check "use as default" for Sense, and now I just have a phone which constantly force-closes as it tries to go to home screen. Reboot makes no difference. I can't get past the force-close to clear default in HTC Sense.
My phone is not rooted. I think my only option now is to do a hard-reset, but how, if I can't get into settings? Need my phone up & running again asap. Would prefer not to have to reset it (therefore preserving all my apps, customisation) but am prepared to do anything at the moment.
Any advice, please?
I think if u turn it off, turn it on again and press the volume down button the select it from the menu does it, ive never done it before but i think thats it.
You could try booting into safe mode first.
With the phone off, hold down the menu button and power up the device. Keep holding down menu until the phone has completely booted up and you should be in safe mode (it will say "safe mode" in the bottom left corner of the home screen if it has worked.
If it boots into safe mode ok, chances are your problem is a widget on one of your home screens as safe mode will not load any 3rd party applications/widgets.
Failing that, you'll probably need to clear storage from fastboot as langers1 has suggested.
WORD OF WARNING - It seems that safe mode will nix any 3rd party widgets you have on your home screens. You will need to delete and re-add them.

Dave
Thanks.
A quick Google search brought up the relevant info from HTC:
Performing a factory reset using phone buttons
If you cannot turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the buttons on the phone.
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
2. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button..
3. Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE, and then press POWER.
4. Press VOLUME UP to start the factory reset.
EDIT: Damn, I should've waited for your reply Dave - I've just reset the phone :-(
Never mind, at least it's working again
So I activated Universal Switch on S6 Edge to check it out, something went wrong in the settings (long story short, got a pop up while setting it up), now screen unresponsive.
It works, I just get this blue horizontal line scanning the screen and nothing else but the power button and home button works. Tried safe mode, no bueno. How can I disable US feature without resetting to factory or at least no data wipe (if possible!)?
Android 5.0, rooted with pingpong, no custom recovery, knox 0x0.
All help is appreciated.

Fixed!
The way I had fixed this is by holding down the power button, both up and down sound buttons, and the home button until it restarted. When the device turned back on it gave the option to turn the setting off. Hope it helped!

how to turn off universal switch
hit home button 3 times
Thanks alot
It worked buddy
It doesn't give me the option to turn it off
Hi,
I have been struggling with Universal Switch on a Samsung S5 Neo. I switched it on, but was never able to switch it off again.
These are findings so far:
-> Did a factory reset using "Sound Up", "Home" and "Power" button simultaneous.
-> The device comes back and wants to configure itself again.
-> I restored my settings from Google, but this immediately brought back "Universal Switch"
-> Factory Reset again and configured the device, but told Google that I want to use it as a "New Device".
-> Now I can use my device in a proper way.
-> In Google Play Store I find all my Apps which were linked to my account and reinstalled them and I am back in business again.
-> Took me half a day to sort this out.
The programmer who designed and programmed this should be hung and shot and poisoned, because this is absolute Crapware.
Hope this helps for all the others who are suffering.
You can also push the home button three times and it should turn it off.
thank u ur the best
Ok, so i have exactly the same problem except my home button doesn't work
Anyone one know how to sort this without having to take it in to a store?
I was faced with this problem before and looked everywhere and couldnt find a fix. This was a while ago. So I dont remember what I did to clear it. I was cleaning off the screen and touched the home button as I was wiping it off and the problem began again.... I just came across your comment because all the others failed. I pressed the home button 3 times quickly and the blue lines stopped scrolling. In addition, I went over the accessibility and I turned off the "Universal Switch" option as much as the option allows. I hate this function. I do not use it or need it (for my needs). I hope I can remember what to do next time this happens. I swore to myself I would remember last time, but apparently that wasnt a guarantee. This time, I will write it down and put is somewhere I know I will find it next time I see these nefarious blue lines scrolling. Hopefully I wont see it again since I disabled it more than it was to begin with. Thank you ever so for commenting. You saved me a lot of frustration!
great fix

Have you tried pressing it rapidly three times?
It happens to me too, have you solved this problem? Please tell me what to do im freaking out right now
me too @Alifanasya
same issue
it works with OTG cable + mouse
So a while back I updated to Android 5.0.1 on my TMobile One M8, and all was fine. Yesterday I went to bed, and didn't touch my phone or do any updates. I wake up and the following is wrong:
1) Left side of the notification bar is blank. Right side still shows WiFi and carrier bars and the time.
2) Home button does not work. It "lights" up when pressed but nothing happens
3) Settings gear from the swipe down bar lights up but does not work
I rebooted a number of times, full power down, safe mode, all to no avail. I then did the cache reset, but that made things worse. I lost my start screen folders, ringtones reset, and home screen widgets got reset.
I called TMobile and they said a full device reset is needed. I do NOT want to do that. This is using the stock TMobile software build with no hacks...no rooting. Software build 4.20.531.4. The "settings" icon from the applist does work.
Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!
Hey there
Had the phone since release
Started with this problem yesterday. It's random, the notification bar pulls down and pulls back up within a second. Sometimes it doesn't release, I have to press power button to enable me to use the phone.
I switched on "show taps" in developer options, and it appears to be a screen press from the top centre of the phone. Only from there.
I've tried replacing the screen protector, tried cleaning the phone, power cycles... I've not tried a factory reset at this point, would need to back everything up.
On 8.1
I'm at my wits end
Thanks in advance
Do you have a case installed? Sometimes phone cases trigger phantom touches on the display.
I do, since day one.
Took it off and still get same problem
I'd use a screen capture app to show the phantom touches that's keeping you from releasing the notification bar and contact Support at this point. But yeah, you should begin backing up your data.
try to use the developer menu -> show touches and see if it's software or hardware related
....actually i have been getting random, backspaces key presses.....i am typing away, and than I will sense the "phantom" key press the backspace, and look as my message get completely deleted. Never happened before, same case/same screen protector from DAY1....I just restart my phone, but still wear. happened twice since OREO update
Boot into safe mode and then turn off and start up.
Fixed my menu bar issues.
Okay, so suddenly when I use my finger print it is asking for my PIN. When I input the PIN the screen turns black and my lock screen simply reappears. So I use my PIN or finger print again and it turns black again and brings me back to my lock screen again.
Now and again previously to today after using my fingerprint it would ask me for my PIN occasionally That's not unusual. This time however it just goes black and kicks me back to my lockscreen. I proceed to repeat the process and same issue.
I can't access my phone via PC either since I can't change the settings for file transfer on the lock screen. Just wants my credentials again.
I forget which rom I am on since I can't get into download mode or recovery.
Any ideas? This may sound like a dumb question, but since this is never happened before, is there another way to reboot my phone without having the ability to access my reboot options? Holding down on power does nothing.
Okay, so on a hunch I long pressed the power button for two minutes. It ended up rebooting and when it loaded some of my app icons were grayed out and I got the message "App Not Installed" when I tried to open any of the grayed apps up. I rebooted again and everything is back to normal.
Also, when I plugged my phone back into my PC I got the authorization prompt again to allow connections and it fixed my device not showing in ADB. Does this key expire sometimes?
Just wanted to let everyone know the issue seems to be fixed. Well, for now.
