Quality feel (use of materials) - Samsung Galaxy S7 Real Life Review

Rate this thread to express how you think the Samsung Galaxy S7 feels in terms of quality. A higher rating indicates that it feels premium and high-quality (attention to detail is high, manufacturing defects don't exist, etc).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

The Gorilla Glass is not Scratch Resistant than my old Galaxy S4.
It's the 7th day I'm using the phone. I used the phone like it's my new baby. Still I could see some really minor scratches on the front glass. If putting in the pocket gives me such scratches, Samsung and Corning you both done a bad joke. The phone is already fragile with the glass back. Now, If I have to worry about the front glass, it's not good.
Also, You have to be very careful while holding it as it slippery.
The look is premium but...

Super su

Screams premium. It feels just a bit more premium than Sony Z5. In hands it feels expensive.

then maybe iphone is for you.

Yeah, the screen is super scratchy. Otherwise everything is great.

I have both iPhone 6S and S7. Samsung did excellent job with S6 and S7. Now phones look and fill premium!

Perhaps you have defects, as this phone has been to hell and back in the past month and it still doesn't have a scratch. I have a case protecting the back and sides, but the front is vulnerable.

The S7 is one of the nicest feeling Android phones I've ever had, although I'm not a fan of glass on the back. The phone feels nice enough I've gotten more premium feeling cases for it than other phones. Right now I have two Obliq cases, the Slim Meta and Flex Pro. Both feel better than anything else I've ever tried.

Good feeling but back is huge fingerprint.

Feels great but I'm afraid of impacts now since it's all glass.
Past samsung galaxies were plastic with maybe a metal trim. Those were bulletproof and didn't need a case.
This version requires protection. Good thing it's thin enough that a jelly case won't alter feel too much and vastly improves grip.

It seems that the power button is hanging in the middle and is functioning as a flip switch..
Sometimes it starts to operate as a push button, but the next time I use it's seems to be back at flipswitch..
The glass is very scratchy.

Hey guys,
I have a problem with my s7. The home button get scratchy on the left side of it. I've been using it normally with a case. So no way it got the scratches from a table or something else. I've read a lot about the scratchy home buttons on galaxy s7, but here's my question: has someone experience what to do or what we can say to samsung or maybe did u got your replaced or something. Idk it's just screwed up guys u pay so much money for a good looking phone and then it scratches by daily usage.

S7 Kills iPhone
I did quite a bit of research before my girlfriend bought her last two phones and the Galaxy consistently ranks as the best phone for the common user. The S6 made some odd choices that compromised the user experience, but the S7 is solid and better than ever. Battery life, performance, size, user experience - in my mind the S7 is the ultimate iPhone killer (for a power user I might suggest upgrading to the Note).
As far as quality feel, go to your local retailer and hold one in your hand for yourself! It feels good in the hand, solid enough, fast as all hell. Yes get a screen protector and a case, but all around this phone is quite sturdy.

The scratches won't affect the function of the scanner.
Samsung has to come with an official statement, I'm sure they are aware of this issue. And I agree this happens to fast for such a "high end" phone.

They could replace it for free and hope that it's only on some products.

Well, sturdy...
I know, you shouldn't drop a $$$-phone, but it happens sometimes. Didn't have any case or screen protection when it happened, so I guess I'm lucky. I have pretty dents on the upper/lower left/right edges of the frame. The dents did not affect the screen, but it was close...
Now I'm running a Spigen, still looking for a nice screen protector/second glass.

Build quality = annoying

Yeah there is a soft spot below the camera where it slightly pushes in. I think it is because of the design of the back cover
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Mines fine, though the back cover seems to be fairly flimsy, definitely will get a case.
Use a bit of tape
I also noticed there is some space under the batery cover around the camera. It produced annoying noices when making a call so I just put on some small strips of tape. Problem solved.

Good idea. I will do the same.
i guess the gap is important to release the heat at the top part during data usage
after applying tape.. dont you have heat issues?
No heat problem
The space between the cover and the body is really small. A few single tape strips at the right place prevent the cover from moving. No heat problems at all.

Mine does this if I don't have the rear cover installed correctly. It still has a TINY amount of push, but less than a mm. You can't notice it unless you look really close to it while pushing.

Good point, tape may become super-stuck-melted-on after a good round of video watching or game playing.
I've had to swap my Nexus for another one when my vibration motor started making weird noises. When my phone would vibrate, it would also come along with an annoying hum like a screw was loose or something.
Only had the phone for a week before that started happening.
I have the extended battery cover and it creaks really bad. My volume rocker is also loose and rattles. I am going to Verizon tomorrow to see if I can find a unit that is more solid.
Sent from my Verizon Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Mine is solid as a rock. No creaking, no soft spots. I have a spare battery and swap it out once in a wile so I take the cover on and off a few times a week. It may just be that it's not sitting right.
Best way I have found is to start at the bottom work your way up one side then down the other. If any clips are missed or not sitting right it will feel cheap. Once they are all clipped properly, it's as solid as can be.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
+ 1 to gnex build quality, not quite the heft of the n1 but it is as solid can be for a plastic phone.

I actually prefer the light weight plastic that samsung builds thier devices with. Look into a motorola or iphone if you want the battleship feel.
My post in this thread explains what that nose on the back cover is and how I fixed it on my phone.

S III Durability

Hi folks
I'm considering getting the S III but am not sure about the screen durability as i've heard a lot of mixed reviews. How durable is it? Looking at some break tests on youtube suggests that the screen is a lot more sensitive as compared to other phone. Is that true?
btw, what is a good case for this device ?
Thanks!

I dunno if this counts, but I keep dropping mine and the only damage so far is a little scratching on the corner of the outer plastic bezel when I dropped it once pretty hard on some rough tar. I haven't seen any other blemishes on the case, and so far no scratching at all on the glass. I loved my Nexus One, but the glass on that scratched pretty easy just sitting in my pocket. Not so with the SIII, no scratches at all on the glass in the 3 mo I've had the phone.
I don't have a case for it.
Bigger the screen... The easier its going to break. Simple.

Similar experience...phone dropped from my pocket while sitting, landed on the corner, cracked screen...probably hit the weak spot on the phone, regardless, shouldn't break that easily IMO..
It is not durable at all compared to my previous phones (gs2, hd2) if you drop it there will be serious cosmetic damage. The plastic is extremely soft.

Get an Otter Box, you pay that much for a phone then spend an extra 50 bucks to keep it safe.
Get a case if your gonna pick up the GS3... its a beautiful phone but you need to make sure you can protect it... I dropped my phone 4 times since I got it and thank God I bought a case for it. If I didn't have one, then my screen would have been shattered already

yea that's why i'm hesitant in buying it (3 actually). The issue seems widespread and if it is a case of bigger screen then it is a serious design flaw or maybe a manufacturing flaw. At this point im probably going to put off buying this phone but let's see if things change

I just bought the generic case from T-Mobile store... its grey. I mean its okay. It gets the job done but I'm looking to get the seidio case with kickstand. I just found that on the top left hand corner of my phone, I have a tiny dent on the side... its irritating the hell outta me but I only see it when I take the case off... guess it could be worse...

I feel like the S II was way more durable. But that's why I bought insurance for this phone. Never had insurance on any other device. And the fact that I have an extended battery and there really aren't any good cases for extended batteries made me get the insurance.

It's a phone and it uses glass, it doesn't matter what phone it is if your looking at Youtube and their hitting it with a hammer or dragging a razor over the screen then it's gonna do as expected. It's almost comical that people do these tests considering you spend money on the phone you should be responsible for it and take care of it. Accidents happen and the carriers know this so instead take care of your property, it doesn't matter who made it or what some moron with a hammer says.
all that is fine but generally speaking one does expect some level of durability for a device that costs upwards of $700 dollars, specially if the company is touting the latest and greatest gorilla glass 2 as one of the main features of the phone. Cellphones break when dropped, everyone should know that. But the amount of complaints i've come across regarding the S III and the different ways the screen is getting damaged is quite abnormal to say the least.
Anyway, i'm still debating whether i should pass on this phone or go for it. Anything new coming up in the coming weeks?

You never hear the whole story either when people give these reviews, "I had it in my pocket and the screen cracked" turns into I was drunk and fell down the stairs.
I still have all of my devices in perfect shape and it all comes down to how well someone takes care of their things. If your gonna carry the phone in your pocket with your car keys then its gonna happen, I see it all the time and like you said at $700.00 you should act like it's worth it. You want an honest opinion on the device? It's worth every penny but the one thing that would make me warm and fuzzy about it is if HTC built the body. It still feels solid but theres nothing like a well built frame like you would find on the One S or X. No other device comes close to the functionality and multitasking that this one does and I own 8 myself (different devices not all cells.)
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
yup the One X is really nice too. Too bad t-mobile doesn't carry it.
I'm going to call t-mobile again and see if i could get a better deal on the S iii's than what they offered me ($179 per phone)

privacy screen protectors despised ? Poll!

Takin a poll on screen protector preferences for the note 2 ,and mainly how the privacys are nice but jack up the screen quality, if not for the pesky cross lines that angle across lcd they would be ok, Seems yeda is a popular brand that presents this .... Any makers of a clearer cleaner Privacy screen protector?

HAGZ Screen Barrier....might help
We make screen protectors in Southern California from HD Japanese film, but not privacy filters yet. Working on it.
They come with a 3 year warranty; don't bubble up over time. Easy to install and will not peel off. More info on our website Hagzinc. Also available on Amazon and Sears.

I agree. I am not a fan. I like the flip cover the Note 2 for protecting the screen while in my pocket. My wife on the other hand, puts a screen protector on her phones the minute they come out of the box. She normally gets a lot more for her phones when she sells them but oh well.
I can't go with out some form of screen protector mine has already saved a ton of scratches off mine. But the privacy ones jack things up to much .

Yeah, I think we might be the few. I'm super careful and also put the phone in my pocket facing me (always make sure nothing else in there). Seems to do a great job of keeping all the smudges off. ( I dont have much to begin with but) I seriously can't imagine putting anything on the beautiful screen. But I think for a lot of people who don't pay much attention to these kind of stuff, maybe the protection is worth it. Certainly beats scratches.
I just bought the new glass version from sphein 'sp' i got on a discount from 36 something and paid 21. Its not a film, its 9h hardened glass. Its the best money I have ever spent on screen protection. It really feels like going bareback.
One of the biggest plus's is you wont see single finger print, no sumges, no glare like bareback. The edges are rounded unlike my buddies glass version. His was the first I had ever felt and had to have one. I just didn't know my version had the rounded edges which makes a great deal of "feel" difference and doesn't snag in you pocket like his does. I would say if you can afford it then its atleast worth trying.

Fancy pants Note ||
I don't know how people can get by dedicating a pocket just to a phone.
What about a pen and pad, smokes and lighter, gun and ammo, keys, wallet, sunglasses, knife, not to mention charging cable and adapter...and those are just basic never-leave-home without it essentials?
I love privacy protectors but haven't found one for the note 2 yet. I frequently have to report on people next to or near me and they should not be seeing what I am writing, that is between them and hr, not them and I.
I also need to make adjustments to cad drawings supplied by clients which they should not be privy to, as they are internal company documents at that point. If the client is standing right there, how else to manage that?
Frequently I have to use my MyTouch 4G Slide phone for these things since it still has a privacy protector on it.

Should I get the Nexus 5X

Hello, before I start, I would like to state it is my first time on XDA forums, so hello everyone! I would like to get a Nexus 5X, however I am scared it is not durable enough. Since I am living in a location where it's hard to get fixed or really expensive, I want to know if it is worth getting. If I shouldn't, what should alternative should I get that has a finger-print scanner and stock or bloatware free Android?
IPhone ? Just kidding. I find it's a good phone. Durable ? If you drop it on concrete from 2 meters it will break, like all phones. Buy a good case which covers the edge of the screen, and a explosion glass and you will be fine.

Yes get one and a glass screen protector and supcase. Either that or wait for the one +3. That looks like a killer device if the rumored $300 price tag is true. But honestly I love my 5x.

What?!? No way would I ever get an iPhone! They are definitely not durable! I cannot remember a single Apple device that I owned that didn't wreck! No joke, I'm serious. Anyway, what I mean is, is it possible to get battery problems or those kind of problems, that is what I mean. Let's say I'm using it and I drop it. What's the chance that it will break? And what is more durable, the 2013 Nexus 7 or the Nexus 5X.?

Gorilla glass is great, but not exactly scratch proof. You generally don't get deep scratches easily, but you will likely get fine scratches and potentially worse if it drops onto something even if it doesn't crack.
That's why i love my Ringke case so much, it's still looks just like a Nexus 5x. And gorilla glass indeed can get some minor scratches but those are really fine.. most cases have a little upstanding edge to protect the screen. For me this is the perfect combo but of course there's no harm in using a screen protector. I just don't use them anymore..

Have you decided on what your choice is?
Personally, the 5x is great with the fingerprint id, but the 2GB RAM is killing me. Too much lag and the battery, for me, is horrible and I hardly use the damn thing. Facebook isn't installed nor a weather app. It's proven to be really frustrating after 8 months of use.
I just did a factory reset tonight to see if it would fix my issues but it didn't. Also I never rooted this.

2gb is more then enough for me, the phones uses average 1-1,1 gb of RAM. Battery is also very good, i can get 4 hours SOT easily.

I am also thinking of buying a Nexus 5x. This thread should help me making an opinion, too.

That's what you think now but there's so many background processes running that my used ram averages at 1.7gb according to system panel (paid version). I honestly can't stop these running processes.
That's why my phone is lagging so much plus the battery is draining right before my eyes.
Don't get me wrong, I really like this phone but these annoyances add up.

And there is a chance only your particular piece is messed up and not all nexus 5x are?

I understand but I'm using it for a few months now and never have any issues with it. I also did check my ram usage on my previous phone to determine if 2gb is enough for me, and it is.
Maybe it's because I'm running custom roms and kernels i don't know, i also use it for work so i have quite a few apps installed.

Definitely can be my device only.
I'm in the process of getting Google to warranty this. That's why I never rooted it. For some reason I had this weird feeling something would go wrong on this device!

I'm not getting it anymore. It's not worth the risk. I'm thinking, should I get the LG G4 or Sony Xperia Z3+ (Z4)? I don't really care about fingerprint sensors anymore. What is the better phone in general? Also, is there any kind of stock Android ROM for these phones?
I can say something though. If you're living in a country that the Nexus devices aren't popular, don't get any of them. It's not worth going so far to fix it if it wrecks, then to have to play a high amount for it.
edit: Never mind
Just picked up a new 5x for $199 with Fi, should be here tomorrow
oneplus 3 looks pretty good too at this point now that it's out.
If you have a 5X already it's likely not worth the upgrade, but if you don't it looks pretty solid.
still, for a tiny bit more the N6P is also amazing.
I just hooked up the warrantied refurbished Nexus 5X this morning. So far so good. I'm just making sure everything that didn't work before is now working before I send my phone back.

Will the 2nd batch will have an improved glass screen?

Do you think Samsung will insist on a better screen re scratching and improve the screen in production. Idealy offering a recall to existing customets

Not until hell freezes over ...
Hasn't been proven there's a problem yet. One screen doesn't nearly warrant a recall.
That said, Samsung never once claimed the Note 7 would be more scratch resistant. They did say Gorilla Glass 5 was used, but I believe they focused on the shatter resistance.
In other words, even if more evidence comes to light that GG5 is less scratch-resistant, don't expect anything

Misleading title
The title of this thread is misleading. It seems to assert that the 2nd batch WILL have an improved glass screen.
Nice click bait title. Have we determined anything's wrong with the screen as it currently stands? I've seen the JerryRigEverything video but is everyone here really willing to turn their opinions over to a single YouTube publisher? I've seen scratched floor models (possibly pre-production based on the build quality) with no history of how they got scratched. And I've seen people here who have dropped their phones and the glass cracked. There are dozens of examples of the latter in the forums of all Samsung's glass-backed phones. I've also read all Corning released about the composition of GG5 and comparison testing (in controlled environments [unlike YouTube videos]) they've done between GG4 and GG5. I don't react to fear mongering so I don't know that GG5 on my Note7 is need of "improvement."
