Should I root my new HTC One M9? - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I bought a brand new HTC One M9, GSM factory unlocked and I'm wondering if I should root it already or are there any downsides other than voiding the warranty? I had Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300 before it and I had it rooted for 3 years so I'm used to having a rooted phone. On the HTC I'm not planing on changing the ROM (which I did constantly on my previous phone), I want to root my HTC so I can use Xposed and TWRP or CWM recovery (Still uncertain which is better).
So should I go for it or nah?!

Nah. And this is my reasoning..
I was in the same boat, I9300 to m9, rooted to non rooted. At the time it was known to be dodgy to root and mess with an m9 and i also figured I'd wait till i could afford s-off.
I postponed it for about a year and a bit, absolutely no issues, didn't need to root for any specific reason except i had root on the samsung and missed messing with xposed.
Bought a new car and decided to upgrade the stock radio to a fancy pants pioneer sph-da120 for a reasonable £350. Then i found out about ARunchained for screen mirroring my phone on the pioneer and needed root so i could control the phone from said pioneer radio. Ended up sending the radio back as it kept overheating. No longer need root to control phone from the car radio.
THAT is the only reason i rooted and s-off'd.
So, xposed doesn't work with s-off phones and I'm not going to s-on again as it'll be a waste of money.
Xposed can easily brick your m9 if you use the wrong mods.
No other reason to root.

Thanks for the reply, I'm still a noob when it comes to HTC, but do I have to pay extra for s-off? And can't I just root it and keep security on?

Yes you can. But be careful what you mess with as it's super easy to brick the m9.
Unlock the bootloader, flash twrp 2.9.0.1, flash supersu 2.65, install busybox.
You can only flash roms that you have the base for. Marshmallow roms can only be flashed over a marshmallow base. Lollipop over Lollipop. To change roms as you please and not worry about base roms is where s-off comes into it.
S-off is only available via an app called "sunshine" which you have to get from their homepage. You must be pre rooted and it costs $25/£18 via paypal or credit/debit card. Very easy to do.

Thank you! I'm not planing on changing ROMs, I used to do it on Samsung because, well, Samsung's stock ROM is **** lol
Anyway, I think I'm gonna wait a bit until I root it.

Is there a clear step by step guide on here to rooting and flashing?

Way to remove bloatware off Orange Phone WO Root/Unbranding?

The lack of space on my phone is frustrating me a lot. More annoyingly, I can't free up space by removing the preinstalled apps. Anyone figured out a way to remove these WO rooting and/or debranding?
You won't be able to remove the apps without rooting.
To be honest your best bet if you want to remove the apps is to go down the debranding route. I did and haven't looked back.

had the same problem! vodafone pulledout the 1.24.161.3 which was rather pointless, got annoyed, debranded, rooted, flashed a custom ROM (or install a srock ROM and unroot).
hope this helps! good luck!
Isn't debranding the same thing as rooting? I'm confused.

Like I said before in many other threads, in order to "debrand" an android phone you need to root.
The term debranding on android is a confusing one. It mainly origionated from non-smartphone users who wanted to remove carrier bloat and install generic firmware on their phones.
Now to do this on an android you will need to root in order to install other roms. However if you are rooting you might as well take the full step and install a custom rom, rather than a rooted generic rom as it offers so much more than any stock rom does.

I installed the generic HTC rom on my Orange branded desire without rooting and have applied OTA froyo update and still not rooted.
I used the instructions posted by Paul @ modaco on 2nd April but he did not root the device until later...
Why do you say you need to root to debrand? (Genuine question as want to know if I have got things mixed up)

You do not need to root if you are just debranding.
Debranding can be carried out by flashing an official htc generic ruu.
Lennyuk. Thanks for clearing it up for me. I understand now. I rooted my Orange desire as soon as I got it in that case.

Wrong! Root is NOT required in order to de-brand to a stock ROM. A Goldcard is required, but not root.
However, just to confuse matters a bit, root IS required if you want to flash a custom ROM.
I de-branded my Orange Desire to a stock ROM about a month before I got around to rooting it via Unrevoked.

[Q] Rooting on update 4.4.3?

Unfortunately, it seems that the VZW M7 has been put on the back burner due to not being very easy to root, s-off and unlock. I must ask though, why hasn't anyone said anything yet? I understand that Sunshine probably works, but Im out of work and do not have $25 to potentially waste (and potentially brick my phone because its not proven working for 4.4.3 yet). I could live with the phone being stock, but I figured I would ask if there was any other way for devices that have been updated to 4.4.3 to get root at least. I also just ordered a whole new front assembly for my phone and figured that I might as well find a root method at the same time.

The guys who made the s-off publicly are the same ones that made sunshine. I dont see them releasing a free version of sunshine. Sunshine is safe, enough, to run without bricking if you follow the steps carefully and only attempt it when you have a full battery.
So I have been out of the loop for a while but I am sending my phone into HTC to get the pink/purple camera fixed. I suspect they will be fully updating the phone before returning it to me. What methods are still viable for root, s-off, and unlock? I have been searching the forums and honestly its just a lot of information to process.
Thanks ahead of time

If they update your phone to the latest OTA, the only exploit option is Sunshine by Jcase at http://theroot.ninja/
Edit:
Sunshine was updated to work with the latest OTA.

[Q] No root with ANK1 - is it safe to rollback to previous firmware?

I'm just wondering if it's safe to rollback the firmware on my Galaxy Tab S 10.5" to the previous one or if it causes some sort of conflict.
I want to do so because I've just installed the most recent one (T800ODD1ANK1 - India) and I can't root it using Cf-Autoroot posted here.
Thanks!

Nothing. I did it with Odin and it just reboots to the same old unrooted tablet. All is working fine as usual, but no root.
What botters me the most is that I had Xposed framework installed but now it has no functionality and all the modules I had installed don't work. I would install the previous firmware but I'm afraid of breaking something, with installing older software on top of newer one.
I was able to root the US version of that ROM (T800XXU1ANK1) using CF Auto Root from Chainfire:
http://download.chainfire.eu/473/CF...uto-Root-chagallwifi-chagallwifixx-smt800.zip
Perhaps give that a shot???
I will but the India version has a more recent changelist (which was the reason why I chose to install it).
Thanks in advance.
As I predicted, since the changelist is different (your version has the same as the older one I had, with functioning root, but not with this one), no root.
Does anyone know if it is safe to install a previous version of the software? Like, for example, Cellular South ANK1 (with an older changelist).
Thanks.

I'm having the same issue as the original poster. It says I am rooted, but I'm not because root checker just keeps spinning and there isn't a SU# icon in my apps. I've done this with Odin about a million times before, for some reason on my new T800 (after I updated the software), it doesn't work.
Am I missing a step because I have the same version you have? Extract the file. Load the md5 file into AP. Hit Start. Wait for it to reboot. Right?
Yea root isn't working for me with T800XXU1ANK1. =(
Im assuming you ran Super SU and updated the binaries or whatever it asks, or updated the app in playstore?
Ive done nothing different and root works fine.
I was thinking about another root alternative. I was thinking about downloading the supersu zip and save it to the device or sd card. Then flash twrp recovery with odin, then boot into recovery and flash the supersu zip to get root? Could that work as an alternative since it flashes root in the process?
I just rolled back to T800XXU1ANJ6 and I am rooted.
I just bought a Tab S, and I can't seem to find an answer to a question that relates to this thread. Is there any advantage to updating before rooting?
I can't decide if I should root it now or update the software, and then root. After searching some, it appears that it doesn't matter whether I upgrade or not, but I can't seem to find if there is any advantage to updating it then rooting. Like, is it easier to get the latest firmware that way?

If i am correct, There should be stock custom roms available that are prerooted so you can flash over. As for an ota update, that is faster than being rooted then flashing lollipop rom.
Anyway we have a lollipop rom already built. Its smooth and most things are working. Its really cool and id rather use this than waiting for samsung to get the latest update out. Do you have the 10.5 in or 8.4 inch?

I have the wifi 10.5 inch.
So, you are saying update OTA then root, unless I want to jump to Lollipop (which I do), which in that case it doesn't matter so I should just root and flash a lollipop rom?
Thanks for helping me out.

Up to you If you want to jump to lollipop/CM12, just run flash Cfautoroot( with odin to root) then install twrp and flash the lollipop rom. There is a thread for cm12/lollipop in the development tab s section.
But wait! Rooting trips knox with voids your warranty. Same users has reported getting service from samsung for free of charge from defective units and some had to pay to get defective parts replaced by samsung. 50/50 chance. I took the risk and havent got a hardbrick or anything yet.

Thank you for the heads-up. I've rooted all 6 of my android phones that I've had, so I'm not too worried about voiding the watrranty. Judging by your reply it sounds like there are a lot of lemons out there for this device. Mine seems to be running okay, but I just can't take all the lag that I assume comes from TW and bloatware. My HTC One M8 with Lollipop seems faster and smoother than my Tab S at stock. Although after typing the last sentence, I put Nova on there and sped up all the animations and it is definitely light years faster than my One M8 now.
I think the answer to the original post is that the Su binary was installed, but the op didn't download then update Super su after rooting. You wont get full root until you do as there is no app to handle root requests.

[Q] Root HTC one m8 with android 5.0.1

Apparently my phone has some bugs after rooting now, so I'd like to get rid of it!
I used Redpoint73's way of rooting. Can somebody please help me?!
Hey guys!
After a few years of iphone, i'm back to HTC again! Now I would like to root my M8, but to be honest, I don't really get it.
I see so many different options and ways to do this. The only thing I want is to have root access, I don't want a custon rom.
Who can help me with this and tell me how to do this.
Cheers& many thanks!
1) Unlock the bootloader via HTCDev.com
2) Install custom recovery
3) Download latest (v2.46) SuperSU zip and flash in recovery
There are a few different options to root once you do steps 1 and 2, but what I suggest above is the easiest IMO.
AFAIK, steps 1 and 2 above are mandatory on Lollipop. Previously, there was the option to (using sunshine s-off apk) temp root, s-off, and unlock the bootloader (and therefore bypass HTCDev.com). But I think the temp root was since patched by HTC, and you need to now root before sunshine.
Thank you very much! This is what I needed!

Can you please also tell me how to unroot?
Somehow my phone is acting up strange since I rooted it.
I see in supersu the option to unroot completely, does that work?
Thanks:good:
Rooting should not effect your device in any negative way. If you're having issues, it's likely something you did after rooting.
Well, the battery drained quite a bit. I deleted some rooted apps and that problem seems solved. But still my phone is acting strange. And now I also have some line on my screen. That has nothing to do with the root, but I want to send back my phone. So can you please tell me how to unroot my HTC?

[Q] Help put in s-off HTC M8 without Sunshine

Greetings to all the community xda
I know this means stop apsurdo
but I would love to know if anyone could give some idea,
possible or not to make S-OFF mode using adb
or fastboot mode, yaque the cost charged Sunshine is very expensive for me
from already thank you !!:cyclops:
before it was possible on old firmwares and bootloaders.
now your only option is sunshine. they put up their blood and sweat on it (figuratively)
yeah I know 25$ is quite high but it's really worth it. unless you or someone else finds an exploit or the same one sunshine is using.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3088681
Have a read there mate.
I think it's ridiculous how there's only 1 way to s off and you have to pay for it. I could flash & do whatever with my S3, no payments already unlocked. Now I receive the M8 as a birthday present, I don't like the experience of lollipop plus I have the telstra bloatware pre-installed so I just wanna downgrade to an unbranded kitkat. I'm not really into customising these days so I don't need the custom roms. Just a way to downgrade without paying for sunshine. I'm not discrediting the makers, rather I won't need it since I'm just using it for basic things. The M8 has been out for over a year, shouldn't there be a free way to downgrade at this point. If I root it & unlock the bootloader, download a stock M8 zipped rom and flash it with TWRP will I be able to downgrade?
You can downgrade to a lower rom yea but you won't be able to change the firmware without s-off ... And no there's no way of doing that without paying

The fact is, many thousands of dollars have been spent in order to develop Sunshine, and it's completely fair that the developers charge a small fee for their work. If you don't wish to pay $25 to use someone else's convenient pre-packaged work, you're welcome to take the alternative route and pay thousands in college courses so you can learn the trade and develop an exploit yourself. Nobody is entitled to anything here, we're lucky that we have such a fantastic community here that shares the way we do.
Calling Sunshine stupid is unacceptable, this thread will remain open but no further bashing of Sunshine or its extremely well respected developers. Without these guys, XDA would not be the same.
I'm not bashing the software, nor do I disrespect the developers at all. They've done a fantastic job. I'm just saying there should be a simpler alternative to flashing roms on HTC than paying. With samsung you don't have to be rooted, all you do is download your rom/odin & fire away, $0 cost. I've been using the M8 for 3 weeks. Great device but your stuck on the firmware, even if you have the custom recovery you can't downgrade to a basic stock rom which is all I require to revert back to kitkat cause unfortunetly mine was pre-installed with lollipop & carrier bloatware. But have to go through the process of rooting, unlocking the bootloader, s-off which costs to customise the device in terms of flashing roms, change the CID so I can flash ruu's outside my region than I finally have kitkat. It's a hassle in my case. Kudos to the developers of sunshine but I would just a simpler way to downgrade so I can have an unbranded stock firmware.
