[Q] Help put in s-off HTC M8 without Sunshine - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings to all the community xda
I know this means stop apsurdo
but I would love to know if anyone could give some idea,
possible or not to make S-OFF mode using adb
or fastboot mode, yaque the cost charged Sunshine is very expensive for me
from already thank you !!:cyclops:

before it was possible on old firmwares and bootloaders.
now your only option is sunshine. they put up their blood and sweat on it (figuratively)
yeah I know 25$ is quite high but it's really worth it. unless you or someone else finds an exploit or the same one sunshine is using.

Have a read there mate.

I think it's ridiculous how there's only 1 way to s off and you have to pay for it. I could flash & do whatever with my S3, no payments already unlocked. Now I receive the M8 as a birthday present, I don't like the experience of lollipop plus I have the telstra bloatware pre-installed so I just wanna downgrade to an unbranded kitkat. I'm not really into customising these days so I don't need the custom roms. Just a way to downgrade without paying for sunshine. I'm not discrediting the makers, rather I won't need it since I'm just using it for basic things. The M8 has been out for over a year, shouldn't there be a free way to downgrade at this point. If I root it & unlock the bootloader, download a stock M8 zipped rom and flash it with TWRP will I be able to downgrade?

You can downgrade to a lower rom yea but you won't be able to change the firmware without s-off ... And no there's no way of doing that without paying

The fact is, many thousands of dollars have been spent in order to develop Sunshine, and it's completely fair that the developers charge a small fee for their work. If you don't wish to pay $25 to use someone else's convenient pre-packaged work, you're welcome to take the alternative route and pay thousands in college courses so you can learn the trade and develop an exploit yourself. Nobody is entitled to anything here, we're lucky that we have such a fantastic community here that shares the way we do.
Calling Sunshine stupid is unacceptable, this thread will remain open but no further bashing of Sunshine or its extremely well respected developers. Without these guys, XDA would not be the same.

I'm not bashing the software, nor do I disrespect the developers at all. They've done a fantastic job. I'm just saying there should be a simpler alternative to flashing roms on HTC than paying. With samsung you don't have to be rooted, all you do is download your rom/odin & fire away, $0 cost. I've been using the M8 for 3 weeks. Great device but your stuck on the firmware, even if you have the custom recovery you can't downgrade to a basic stock rom which is all I require to revert back to kitkat cause unfortunetly mine was pre-installed with lollipop & carrier bloatware. But have to go through the process of rooting, unlocking the bootloader, s-off which costs to customise the device in terms of flashing roms, change the CID so I can flash ruu's outside my region than I finally have kitkat. It's a hassle in my case. Kudos to the developers of sunshine but I would just a simpler way to downgrade so I can have an unbranded stock firmware.

[Q] Rooting on update 4.4.3?

Unfortunately, it seems that the VZW M7 has been put on the back burner due to not being very easy to root, s-off and unlock. I must ask though, why hasn't anyone said anything yet? I understand that Sunshine probably works, but Im out of work and do not have $25 to potentially waste (and potentially brick my phone because its not proven working for 4.4.3 yet). I could live with the phone being stock, but I figured I would ask if there was any other way for devices that have been updated to 4.4.3 to get root at least. I also just ordered a whole new front assembly for my phone and figured that I might as well find a root method at the same time.

The guys who made the s-off publicly are the same ones that made sunshine. I dont see them releasing a free version of sunshine. Sunshine is safe, enough, to run without bricking if you follow the steps carefully and only attempt it when you have a full battery.
So I have been out of the loop for a while but I am sending my phone into HTC to get the pink/purple camera fixed. I suspect they will be fully updating the phone before returning it to me. What methods are still viable for root, s-off, and unlock? I have been searching the forums and honestly its just a lot of information to process.
Thanks ahead of time

If they update your phone to the latest OTA, the only exploit option is Sunshine by Jcase at http://theroot.ninja/
Edit:
Sunshine was updated to work with the latest OTA.

Custom Roms on M8 5.0.1?

Hi guys forgive me but I have owned Galaxy for a long time and I am thinking about making the switch because you can get such good deals on used M8's these days.I know on the version of S5 that I have that the bootloader is totally locked and there is no hope of root or custom ROMS ever as far as I can tell.
Browsing around here it seems as though Downgrade/Root/Custom Roms are still possible.
Is that a correct statement? I just wanted to verify before I spend the cash.Otherwise I'll probably just keep what I have.
Thanks!
Official bootloader unlock is available via HTCDev.com for this device (except for a couple versions, like Verizon). You don't need to "downgrade" anything, and if fact you should not.
Once bootloader unlocked, you can install custom recovery (TWRP) and root or flash custom ROMs all you like.
Some partitions are still write protected with the bootloader unlocked, such as bootloader and radio. But there are only specific reasons to tinker with those. If you want access to the protected partitions, you can pay for s-off using an XDA user created sunshine app ($25). But as mentioned, you don't need s-off to flash ROMs, or most other mods.
Thanks very much for the detailed reply. That answers everything.

Should I root my new HTC One M9?

Hello!
I bought a brand new HTC One M9, GSM factory unlocked and I'm wondering if I should root it already or are there any downsides other than voiding the warranty? I had Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300 before it and I had it rooted for 3 years so I'm used to having a rooted phone. On the HTC I'm not planing on changing the ROM (which I did constantly on my previous phone), I want to root my HTC so I can use Xposed and TWRP or CWM recovery (Still uncertain which is better).
So should I go for it or nah?!
Nah. And this is my reasoning..
I was in the same boat, I9300 to m9, rooted to non rooted. At the time it was known to be dodgy to root and mess with an m9 and i also figured I'd wait till i could afford s-off.
I postponed it for about a year and a bit, absolutely no issues, didn't need to root for any specific reason except i had root on the samsung and missed messing with xposed.
Bought a new car and decided to upgrade the stock radio to a fancy pants pioneer sph-da120 for a reasonable £350. Then i found out about ARunchained for screen mirroring my phone on the pioneer and needed root so i could control the phone from said pioneer radio. Ended up sending the radio back as it kept overheating. No longer need root to control phone from the car radio.
THAT is the only reason i rooted and s-off'd.
So, xposed doesn't work with s-off phones and I'm not going to s-on again as it'll be a waste of money.
Xposed can easily brick your m9 if you use the wrong mods.
No other reason to root.

Thanks for the reply, I'm still a noob when it comes to HTC, but do I have to pay extra for s-off? And can't I just root it and keep security on?
Yes you can. But be careful what you mess with as it's super easy to brick the m9.
Unlock the bootloader, flash twrp 2.9.0.1, flash supersu 2.65, install busybox.
You can only flash roms that you have the base for. Marshmallow roms can only be flashed over a marshmallow base. Lollipop over Lollipop. To change roms as you please and not worry about base roms is where s-off comes into it.
S-off is only available via an app called "sunshine" which you have to get from their homepage. You must be pre rooted and it costs $25/£18 via paypal or credit/debit card. Very easy to do.

Thank you! I'm not planing on changing ROMs, I used to do it on Samsung because, well, Samsung's stock ROM is **** lol
Anyway, I think I'm gonna wait a bit until I root it.
Is there a clear step by step guide on here to rooting and flashing?

HTC 10 Android Pay Doesn't Work after OTA Update, "Not Compatible"

I have an unlocked HTC 10. I recently received an OTA update.
I have been using android pay just fine with no issues. However after the most recent Android Pay update. I was getting an error message explaining I may need to "unroot" my device..
My device has NEVER been rooted and android pay has worked great!!!
As an extra precaution, I did a factory reset to my phone, and re-downloaded android pay.
Now I get a new error, but very similar. When I try to add a card after installing, now it says
"Android Pay can't be used
Google is unable to verify that your device or the software running on it is Android compatible".
After already factory resetting and uninstalling/reinstalling the app... I'm not sure what to do... I don't want to root or flash... but I am looking for options....
thanks
I read somewhere that flashing elemental X as the kernel will fix this, but I'm waiting for more people to confirm. I'm also guessing flashing a new kernel doesnt requiring wiping or anything? and lastly, how can i backup my existing kernel to reflash in case **** goes haywire? anyway, hope that helps.
Also using S-OFF and LOCKED bootloader will work.

I"m not sure about that.
SafetyNet is looking for the flag that the unlocked bootloader throws, someone more familiar with recent flags than me should know which way the flag is set upon relocking bootloader.
The ElementalX kernel has the option, but I believe that's another option for s-off users, I'm not sure if it will work for s-on unlocked users.
I think if it doesn't pick up "relocked" when it checks SafetyNet, it wont be long until it does. This is a cat and mouse game, and google has the right to "take its ball and go home" with root users, I just wish they wouldn't use that against us enthusiast users, who are their best advocates since we carry so much weight on advising all the non tech oriented unrooted consumers when it's time for them to purchase new smartphones. We are the ones that the rest of consumers call for advice or when something is broken.
Will taking this update break root or cause other issues? Just received the notice a few hours ago.
Current setup:
S-on
Unlocked
Rooted
Stock ROM still (obviously)
SW v1.80.651.1
Sprint
I waited for the N7, and returned it without opening it before the fiasco. Because I was going to wait for the Pixel, which ended up being astronomical in price. So I waited for the V20, only to find it has a "Verizoned" bootloader. And just this past weekend I settled on the HTC 10.
If anybody can provide me helpful information, I would appreciate the consideration.
ETA: NM - simply made a copy on sd card, then renamed with .bak in update folder and nag went away. Seemed to be a small incremental update from .1 to .6.
So it sounds like the lesson here is if you haven't unlocked your bootloader yet, don't, if you want to use Android Pay. From what I've read, using Sunshine to go S-off LOCKED will allow android pay to work, as long as you aren't rooted. Also there are a couple kernels you can use to disable to check for unlocked bootloader.
Is this all correct?

Need a quick check on my "rooting plans".

I've watched the video guides about Sunshine S-off but I'm still a bit confused. I currently have a non-rooted, S-ON HTC 10 with a locked bootloader (in other words it's factory new). I want to upgrade to Nougat when it becomes available in the EU, but since I want to have an "S-off LOCKED" + rooted phone I was told that doing the Sunshine method while still being on MM is the best thing to do. To do this, as far as I'm concerned I have to follow these steps:
1.) Download, run and purchase Sunshine.
2.) Select the S-off LOCKED option and start the process.
3.) This is where things become confusing. According to the videos I've watched, now my phone should be encrypted. Since I don't have TWRP, should I use the original recovery program's factory reset option?
4.) Flash TWRP, just like you had your bootloader unlocked. (If I flash TWRP on MM, will I still be able to use it on Nougat?)
5.) Wait for the Nougat OTA and install it. (The update should come automatically, right?)
6.) Root it.
After rooting, I would still get the OTA updates, right? (since I have my bootloader locked)
I would be grateful if someone could verify these steps. Thanks in advance!

There is a lot of questions unanswered.
1. Why do you want S-OFF? Most people don't need it.
2. Do you want Nougat 2.28 full firmware, or only Nougat Android?
3. You need stock recovery to flash an OTA.
4. Current TWRP will not work on Nougat 2.28 firmware, and I think it won't work until HTC release official Kernel source.
5. If you want only the Android Nougat OS, while staying on MM 1.95 Firmware in order to be able to flash TWRP...then why not just flash Viper, ICE or LeeDroid custom ROM?
6. If you do flash custom N ROM, I believe that there are bugs due to using MM firmware. Something to do with Camera and Sound. It's all very complicated.
Summary: Describe what you want and we'll be able to tell you exactly what you need to do.

Thanks for the anwser!
I'll try to anwser your questions (and ask new ones) as precisely as I can.
1.) I want S-OFF because that way the bootlocker can stay locked, and as I've heard you can go S-ON again with Sunshine. That way I don't really have to worry about the "relocked" state and warranty loss. Otherwise the HTCDev method would be perfectly fine for me.
2.) I didn't know that you can use the Nougat OS without upgrading your firmware. Could you please explain the differences between "Nougat 2.28 full firmware" and "Nougat Android"? I tried to do a research but I've failed
3.) So basically if I have TWRP the only way to install system updates is to flash them manually? Also if I stay with stock recovery while being S-off LOCKED will I get the OTAs? And what if I unlock the bootloader?
4.) When do you think HTC will release official Kernel source? Weeks? Months?
5.)- 6.) When I bought my phone in July, I decided not to root it immediately. I've planned to root after installing Android N, and since the EU release is near I've started researching on the process. The only reason I want to S-off now, while being on MM, is that Sunshine might not work after installing the Nougat OTA (I need Sunshine to protect my warranty). I'm not in a hurry, my goal is to have a phone with Nougat, TWRP, root and xposed (maybe an N version of Viper). I don't want to have a buggy phone. If running Nougat/Viper on an older firmware would cause bugs, I'd rather wait with the whole process until the OTA arrives, then install it and unlock my bootloader with HTCDev instead of achieving the "S-off LOCKED" state with Sunshine, even if this means warranty loss.
I hope I could explain things better this time.

If you're thankful press the thanks button, it would mean much more than saying you're thankful. It is there for a reason.
By seeing your answers my best advise will be, you don't need to S-OFF.
HTC explicitly states in their full T&C that your warranty is not completely void when you unlock bootload.
Your warranty just becomes conditional, which means that if you brick your device your warranty is void.
Or if any damage to the phone comes as a direct effect of you unlocking your bootloader, then warranty is void.
If the damage/fault is unrelated to you unlocking your bootloader then your warranty should still be AND will be valid.
Has been this way since I first joined the HTC bandwagon with the OneX.
Now regarding waiting for N before rooting. I also advise against this.
When the N sources are released you will be jumping into mostly BETA releases.
These tend to have a few bugs early on, I'd advise to root now while on M which is very stable and full of awesome features.
Wait around until N has some stable ROMs and Kernels.
Answering your other questions:
2) The firmware on your phone is your: "Bootloader, Radio, OpenDSP etc..." These are the deepest software on your phone, and for security and to avoid bricks should stay stock, unless you really know what you are doing. Firmware is not made by Google, but instead by the OEM. This is unique to the hardware on your phone. Android is made by google, and it can be divided into Kernel and OS/ROM.
3) S-OFF I don't know, but if you are S-ON with stock system and stock recovery you should always be able to install OTA even if you have unlocked bootloader.
4) I believe January.
Enjoy root and xposed on MM...get familiar with what is possible and learn as much as possible on a stable configuration.
Once you've learned a bit more about what root is capable of then move on to N when N is stable.
I suggest to learn how to use RUU.exe/RUU.zips before moving to N though.

I guess I'll do as you said and do it now. I have only one more question left then: let's say I unlock my bootloader with HTCDev, install TWRP, then root my phone and flash xposed. A few months later Nougat becomes stable and I decide to upgrade. In that case, I would be still using my current firmware, so N based roms would contain bugs, which I don't want. How can I upgrade my firmware in a situation like this?

You're welcome, it's a pleasure to help.
An easy way of getting root is by flashing a custom ROM which already comes with root
I believe that quickly by Feb you should already have a stable N release.
Now to upgrade firmware... That's what the RUU part of my previous answer is for.
HTC are really rooting friendly, so much so they gave us a way to easily and quickly going back to stock. That is called an RUU.
You can search that more in detail to learn about it.
But to update firmware you have two ways, the fast way through RUU, or the slow way by flashing stock ROM via TWRP, then fastboot flash stock recovery and then flash the OTAs.
By doing RUU or via OTA method will update your firmware.
Keep in mind if you plan to use Android Pay or Pokemon Go, this may effect some your decision if you want to go s-off locked status or unlocked bootloader. Everything @Kyuubi10 said is good info, that's just something I would factor into consideration. There may be ways around having an unlocked bootloader and using Android Pay, I'm not the expert there because I don't want google having more of my financial information than they already have. But if you do use it or plan too, that might be something you need to take into consideration before you go unlocked and s-on.
I'm not talking you out of unlocking or anything, I just want you to know in case it's something you need to further consider.

Actually... I believe you can go unlocked and use android pay.
As long as you don't have root.
You can even have customROM and custom Kernel, but as long as you have no root, and no xposed you should be able to use Android Pay and Pokemon Go.
E.g. MultiROM with 1 rom non-rooted should be possible.
But I may be wrong, so don't quote me.

A few months later Nougat becomes stable and I decide to upgrade. In that case, I would be still using my current firmware, so N based roms would contain bugs, which I don't want. How can I upgrade my firmware in a situation like this?

You're lucky!
HTC released N sources yesterday!!
Will probably get a stable release by mid January.

Thanks for the info! I've unlocked the bootloader yesterday and I'm planning to flash TWRP and SuperSU tonight?

Don't worry about flashing SuperSU, usually it'll be included in the Custom ROM...if you want to use Custom ROM.
Or even TWRP gives you the option to enable SuperSU, if you wish to stay with stock ROM.
