[Q] "voiding" warranty

All this talk about voiding warranty is interesting. I'm not an expert however I thought that warranty cannot normally just be "voided" in totality - instead manufacturers can deny a warranty claim on the basis that a modification has interfered with the product and they are no longer liable.
So, if we root the device and then have a major software failure (bricked), Samsung can say "denied warranty claim"
On the other hand, if the button stops mechanically working, surely Samsung couldn't claim this was related to the rooting.

In the EU is warranty a legal right which can't be canceled by the seller. In contrast to guarantees the seller made. The problem is that warranty is effective when the problem already exists at the moment of sale. And this is mostly a question of confidence.
I can't speak for Samsung but HTC tries this also and here I know enough cases where the warranty stayed after rooting/unlocking and the device was repaired/replaced free of charge.

I know Asus is not cool about the warranty stuff. I had a 3 month old TF700 that had the touch screen fail and Asus wouldn't fix it under warranty. $280 out of pocket and we all know there is no way CleanROM broke the touchscreen sensor. I just assume Samsung is the same way, but have no idea actually.

They aren't too bad from my experience. I sent a fully rooted tab 7 to them that had internal memory go bad. I sent it to t hem with ICS on it, though the device was never upgraded beyond gingerbread from OTAs. They fixed it TWICE (it happened again when i received it back) for the same problem without any complaints or questions.

Re-Lock LG-G4 warranty issue

Hi together,
I've sold a LG G4 eight weeks before. The phone was unlocked via the official LG developer method and cyanogenmod.13 was installed. The phone works well, but for 2 weeks the camera does not work any more. After resetting, the camera works fine for a few hours. I have reset and reinstall the original lg software via lg update tool but the camera defect is still available. I'm pretty sure that issue is a hardware issue.
To create a warranty issue, the bootloader must be re-locked again.
Do you have any ideal to (re-lock) lock the bootloader again? Otherwise I have to pay to repair a 8 weeks old phone.
Note: I'm new in this forum. Therefore it was not allowed to open a issue within the developer section.

You cant re-lock the bootloader. Unlocked is unlocked. Its written everywhere...no way back!

I've successfully send mine for repair after applying 24V to the battery contacts (batter removed) and frying the mainboard. It was the only way to get them to fix it and it worked.

Which service point/country did you use? The IMEI number is well known for LG that this phone was unlocked. Did you use the official unlock process from LG itself?

Just buy a new camera off ebay. They're about $20 and fit it yourself

How would LG know this IMEI is unlocked? Having gone through the web process to download the needed files doesn't mean one has used them (like me).

Unless the phone itself transmits its unlocked state *after it is actually unlocked*, LG can't claim it is unlocked just because you downloaded the files.

In E.U any software modification are legal by the law, and LG can't cancel the warranty, so if you are in Europe you have no problem.

That is not true. I've been in contact with several entities to be able to know if that was true and they always said that the warranty is void. There is always a chance they don't care you have the bootloader unlocked and still fix your phone but you shouldn't count on it. In short, if you are lucky you can get your phone fixed. I'm still waiting for LG's response to whether should they fix the phone if you had the bootloop problem and the bootloader unlocked but if the problem is not that I doubt they will fix it.

Problem is that companies don't like regional warranty laws, and will often play misinformed or ignorant of them, so they will inform you about *their* side of the story.
Fact is they *have to* honor them, but won't do so unless they are made to. Which often means the consumer has to take it further, which is time (and maybe money) consuming, so, many of us don't do it. And of course the companies know it and count on it.

I talked to the seller and lg itself. The thing is the time/money you will spend putting lg in court won't compensate for the phone. If they don't want to fix the phone they won't fix the phone unless you know some laywer that works for free

I'm sorry if I wasn't explicit enough. What I mean is: If LG doesn't fix your product you won't get it fixed unless you lose 10 years of your life worth in trouble. Even if you go to any consumer rights association you won't get your phone fixed before 6 months or so. Can you handle 6 months with no phone? My point being, if you want to keep your warranty don't unlock the bootloader despite the fact we are right we have no power to make the law count.

It's legal to unlock your bootloader in EU, but LG doesn't recognize that and they've answered me to proceed with suing them - they do not care Just go to a local repair shop - any would do, and tell them to apply 24V to the battery contacts - it will fry the mainboard and leave you with the possibility to return it for a repair. The phone acts as if it's in the Qualcomm mode - a know problem with the G4, so they will just replace the board and give you back the new one. Of course they don't know whether your bootloader is unlocked or not. Just don't tell them when bringing the phone to the repair center (duh)

After emailing lg they said I could send the phone to be analysed and if it was their problem they would fix it. However there is always the chance they say it was our fault but at least they won't reject it before knowing what the problem is

How to 'naturally' damage G3

This question will be controversy...
In few months my G3 warranty will end... My friend who lately send his G3 for repair under warranty got back new G4.
(Maybe they were out of some parts? Doesnt matter....)
Curently I'm thinking about to check, would I also get new G4 instead of repaired G3?
So... Is there any way to damage it without leaving any hints for repair man?

This is fraud. If you want a G4, buy one. If you can't afford one buy something else or keep using your G3.

You could try a few second in the microwave (but not too much)

Indeed. There is no comparable warranty on your rectum. Your friend was lucky. In addition, he wasn't actively intending to commit fraud. This grinds my gears...

To be honest I really like my G3 Only thing which bother me is overheating.
I will make hardware thermal mod but after warranty end Thought maybe there is a chance to solve it other ways.
Read that G4 CPU better manage thermal problems.

People like you are the reason the majority have to pay more for things such as insurance or extended warranties.
Don't like the phone? Sell it and save up fro something else.

Can I repair a bootlooping device myself?

I have unlocked my bootloader and rooted my device (H815, s/n 506*, EU); and therefore LG does not want to repair my LG G4 under warranty.
Can I repair it myself, maybe replace the motherboard or something? Does anyone really know what the exact problem is? Where should I get replacement parts?

You need to just put it back to stock then call back and don't mention that it was ever rooted. It doesn't matter if it was or not anyway.

yes replace MB yourself or use the modded TOT to use only 4 cores and big cores disabled

Mbs are about 200 dollars american. A little pricy in my opinion but one of the most simple setups ive ever seen

You can try all the methods mentioned above, have it fixed in a repair shop (they'll re-solder the flash chip) or even put it in the oven. But it won't help. It'll only work temporarily.

@kabirjedi unlocking your bootloader do indeed void your warranty. He cannot do anything with it and link you posted is about installing CFW or rooting fw alone.

From my observations the processor is the only problem, more accurately, the two faster cortex a57 cores. Some how they broke hence the phone cannot be booted up as it returns that them 2 cores are unavailable. Thats why this tot method works.

I agree with that it SHOULDN'T void warranty, but sadly it does and AFAIK in Poland no one managed to get it fixed for free with unlocked bootloader, even if this EU law was mentioned. I dont know how they manage to overwrite Eu laws but they sure know how to confuse the customer and leave him with 1600PLN bill (price for repair outside of warranty)
Luckly I just had unbranded FW + root + xposed without having bootloader unlocked so they replaced mobo without any problems.
Anyway I wish you best of luck in your case, OP. Do what @kabirjedi suggested, perhaps you will have more luck in your country

the way i see it. is no matter what phone is defective. i dont think a phone because of unlock bootloader will bootloop. it will brick for sure so they are very different things . but LG sees this a potential to make bootloop more easily affected. thats non sense.. theres phones like S2 running great G2 with bootloader unlocked running great.. this is hardware no sofware... maybe heat plays a role...only way i see it can trigger it is overclocking it... but if you unlock and debloat phone should runs better with less apps that are crap.. one exmaple is disable logd.. that helps the CPU.

Time and time again it has been confirmed that this has nothing to do with bootloader being locked or unlocked. This is manufacturing issue that was firstly acknowledged when they recalled all Sprint models with 505xxx S/N but other providers/suppliers ignored it and carried on selling faulty devices just to meet sales targets. Make sales first and worry about the potential issues later is the common practice nowadays. For the suppliers it was always the possibility of either developing the bootloop or not. For LG replacing just motherboards still means a sold device at the end of the day. And don't worry in this competitive market companies do anything to meet the sales targets... Headaches for us -> small inconvenience for LG.

On reddit people suggested resoldering the CPU, I might give that a shot.

Hi, just bought a second hand g4 with serial number starting 509 will the phone possibly bootloop? Also the phone is the Taiwan model and I currently live in the UK, will having the Taiwan model cause any problems? Thanks

It may Bootloop it may not. There is no definite answer. You may have problems with a non EU model in the EU. They may fix it or may not. You have to ask an LG service centre about this.

If you ask if 509 is prone to Bootloop issue I think it is. Most bootloops happened on 505 though but the general consensus is the newer G4 you have the less chances for bootloop. Again there is no definite answer. We do not know the dirty details. We don't know which S/N is safe and if LG fixed the problem and from which S/N and after they did. We purely rely on public reports to draw conclusions. Up until now 6xx seems safe with only 1 or 2 ppl reported a bootloop on Reddit. Just make a backup and keep your data on the SD card. If you get a bootloop contact LG. They seem to be aware of the issue and fixing all broken phones even out of warranty some times.

Thanks so much for the response!!! So do you recommend I return the phone as there is a risk of boot loop and the phone is from Taiwan so they may not fix it?

yes theres a high chance it may bootloop.. and no UK wont repair your phone.. you must shipped to the country you got it from .. i say return. and get a phone with 6xx serial number.. there less reports with those serial numbers..
maybe @jinderation can chime in... hear hes story.

I had taiwan h815 yes it did bootloop eventually there are reported 509s in bootloop also if u bought it used u wont have warranty from uk only taiwan that is if u have the original receipt n the warranty card in the box n u must have a friend in taiwan too who can go to lg center n have it replaced n i tried email n phone they didnt help me ... If ur going to use it longer period like a year forget it lots of frustration

I'm in the UK and have the same problem - a bootlooping TWN H815. It was purchased used last year, so no receipt or warranty card. I was wondering whether you had explored paying LG for an out-of-warranty repair? At this stage I'm looking at the best way of cutting my losses.

In US cost of repairs alone is 200US$ cuz of morherboard replacement either that or which u can get a used g4 at the same price so even if ur bootloops there is no point of fixing it....all i can say for u is to wait for atleast an year after the bootloop so the prices fall down for repairs....there is no way u can send it to taiwan also there is no warranty n recepit thats only even if u have a friend there...

Avoiding heat
Hi all am in same boat. Got a EU H815 an 506 hw1.0 and until a week ago had never heard about bootloop issue. I've had unlocked bootloader, rooted with custom ROMs nearly whole ownership and as a result have never had any heat up issues. After reading 100s of pages of the issue my conclusion is that it seems to be heat that affects a soldered component which eventually fails. So based on this theory I'm using Kernel Adiutor to control the throttling when CPU temp gets >55degc. It is only an educated guess but does seem logical. Hope it helps others

Definitely the cause. I did always notice with stock ROMs Genisys etc my phone got hotter than CM and logically it makes sense so I'm sticking with it :fingers-crossed:

Seems like the issue calmed down over the winter in the northern hemisphere. And now that the summer is in full bloom people are looping like crazy. Im hoping between being almost as far north as one gets in usa. So like 85 far. Is blazing here. Plus me doing the thermal mod im keeping my device cool enough to make it as i have no waranty so a mb replacement costs me about 200 dollars american.
I have a s6 and a couple other mid range devices. I wont hesitate to toss my g4 in the trash. I got mine on a trade in from my g3 i only paid like 150 for my g4 so nope not me. Unless i get one cheap.
If this was an automobile this would be a recall i dont understand why these devices arent recalled.
I saw a news cast talking about how they make devices so cheap and breakable "for the economy" why would u buy the newest devices out if your old ones are running quite perfectly they say. So this is for economic reasoning. So go ahead lg keep making s****y devices i will buy a new one but not from you.

They are always better options than LG out there...the credibility rate for lg is always has been the worst thats why there used phones are sold dirt cheap everywhere

Hi, my G4 had bootloop recently, motherboard was changed under the warranty. New motherboard was made in 04/2018. Is it known if newer motherboards still have a bootloop issues?

they are all bad as far as i know. And yes, nobody has this phone as its later revisions bootlooped after warranty and its more expensive to repair this piece of crap than what it is worth even after repairing.
I have my bootlooped G4 in a drawer since 1 year ago.
