Ok so here is what happened.
I bought this phone (HTC ONE M8) online on ebay. It says it shipped from Honk Kong.
Everything was all hunky dooreey until...
One day (last week) it asked me to do an update, I kept saying "remind me after 4 hours", I mean who has time for an update right?
Then I accidentally clicked it... and voila! I can now only access the android recovery screen and the bootloader menu.
So I went banging on HTC's door. I talked to a few of their agents and was told my phone was american (AT&T) and I was in the UK, so the UK agents could not help me.
So I went to the US guys and chatted with them. The agent told me my phone had an american OS installed and I resided in the UK, so when I updated my phone, it crashed... or something like that.
They then escalated my case and I was talking to the HTC dev agent. I gave him my 'fastboot getvar all' code and he said he could provide "limited help".
BUT... he gave me the link for this site and so I'm guessing If that guy thought you can help me, (and he works for HTC), you guys are the one's who will help a brother in need.
It had no problems prior to this...
here is what it says on the bootloader screen:
*** Software status: Official ***
*** LOCKED ***
M8_UL_CA PVT SHIP S-OFF
CID-11111111
HBOOT-3.19.0.0000

OpenDSP-v51.2.2-00593-M8974_FO.1015
OS-6.12.401.4
What should I do?
Can I manually install the UK OS onto my device?
I come full of hope....

It says: 'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I did not download the adb file from post #4.
After downloading it, I did not click on it and select :

Once I did, it was working, and now so is my phone...
I guess the HTC agent was right in sending me to you guys... Thanks man! Much appreciated bredren. :highfive:

Hey all. Done a lot of searching and have tried a lot of solutions but I'm still having the same problem.
A friend of mine brought me her phone (AT&T HTC One X Plus) that she had soft bricked my trying to root and flash his own rom by herself. Trying to fix it, she accidentally relocked the bootloader and also wiped the recovery from the device. She said she wanted it re-rooted and CyanogenMod 10.1 installed. I told her I could do it for her. I have unlocked the bootloader through htcdev, flashed on the new recovery (using CWM v6.0.2.7) and now all I need to do is transfer the actual ROM to the phone and then install it. I can't, however, for the life of me get this phone to communicate with the computer/ADB. Fastboot recognizes it fine, I can type put the phone in fastboot mode and type 'fastboot oem get_identifier_token' and it will give me the identification number of the phone and other details, so I know it's communicating with it, but when I type 'adb devices', nothing shows up. And it's the "adb push filename.zip /sdcard/" command that I have to use. I have also tried going through the recovery and mounting the /sdcard/ and /data/ and /system/ to the computer, with no luck. Whenever I click on the "mount sd" through the recovery, the page just refreshes and puts my selection back at the top making no changes.
Whenever I plug this phone into any of my computers, all of the drivers install except for the HTC MTP driver, as seen here;
img59.imageshack.us /img59/61/driverh.png (Sorry, going to have to fix that link, can't post pictures yet)
I have plugged an HTC One into the computer and it downloads all the drivers just fine and communicates with adb. Same thing with my Note 2.
Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
John
Problem is not good, but flashing stuff from here is not going to help. There is a separate section for the AT&T devices. This section only applies to the international ones.
Check for the right forum (AT&T hox+)

You are in the wrong forum m8! This is the International One X forum. I think You have a HTC One X+ Device by looking at your devices code name...
Don't flash anything from here...

Hello all! I'm new here, not sure how to navigate through this forum. But I have a slight problem and I was told you fine folks could help me out.
I just bought a HTC Desire HD second hand. The reseller told me it was unlocked and ready to go. Took it home, popped in my Sim card and all was well. Now this is my first Android device, but not my first encounter with them. I was looking though the All Apps and realized there isn't a Settings app. I then pressed the Menu button and pressed Settings and nothing happens. I am not entirely sure, but I believe the Settings app has been hijacked. So I have dragged down the notification section and have gone into the quick settings and tapped all settings and I get an error saying "Sorry! Status Bar has stopped unexpectedly. Would you like to tell HTC?"
So I have looked at the Preview error report and this is what it says:

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my phone? I pretty much can't do anything
1- reboot the phone and try again.
Same problem?
2- power off. Pull the battery, count to 30, place battery back in....
While holding the volume down button, press the power button. It should take you to hboot.
Does it say s-off and/or bootloader unlocked?
While you are at it, contact the seller.
Report back.

Ahh.... When you said unlocked you meant SIM-Unlocked right?
You'll need to see if someone else can help you since I don't want to recommend anything with a phone that is stock. My bad.

Yes the phone is SIM-Unlocked, sorry for any confusion.
Anyone else able to help? I really wanna use my phone to it max potential I'm coming from a Bold 9900 and this phone is way Superior!
Why don't you download a stock rom and flash it ?
maybe you can try factory reset from bootloader
first disable fastboot from settings>power> fastboot (untick)
turn off your phone...then turn on again with press volume down + power until go inside bootloader
select FACTORY RESET..
*don't forget to backup everything you need first..contact, sms, etc.. because this will make all phone data, app and system configuration back to the original state..except sd card
How exactly does one flash a stock rom? And I have done several factory resets.. all ended with the same result. I've lost and info I have stored and I still have no Settings app lol

Now, this seems to be a common problem and most suggestions are re flash the firmware using RUU. The first stumbling block I am hitting is the phone is not being detected on any PC that I use, by any cable I use, either by Windows ( USB detected sound plays and disconnected plays if I unplug but no detection in device manager, I have loaded the HTC ABD drivers, installed HTC manager and Android studio but again no detection) or on a Mac.
Question is, can I reset this phone back to a working state or should I direct the customer back to a HTC service centre?
BTW the phone phone is a European model and currently on 3.
Thanks in advance.

Try another USB cable, and another port on the PC.
Also, go into bootloader, select fastboot (if not highlighted in red already) using vol keys, and confirm with power button. Then see if the phone's serial number is returned with the command: fastboot devices

Its not the Euro version. Its US version, hacked to accept Euro software. Due to this, and SuperCID (11111111) its obviously been modified, and HTC won't honor any warranty (if that is what you are asking).
I also wouldn't be surprised if the back cover was replaced (again, voiding the warranty). What does the model number on the back say?

Attempted this with 2 PC's, 1 Laptop all running Windows 7 Pro with SP1 64 bit and a Mac. Tried the cable that came with my Samsung S5 ( Not the USB 3 cable) plus 2 other cables that I use in the workshop and the original cable suppled by the customer. Phone not detected in device manager on any of the PC's, however the plugged in and unplugged sounds do play. Mac sit's idoly twiddleing its thumbs...

Went into bootloader and fastboot. only option I have to locate the S/N is via show barcodes. the S/N is:- HT444WM04348

I dont think it would be under warranty as customer reckons it is over 12 months old.

Now that you mention that, I think there may be an Australian variant (OP6B110) which also has the product ID (M8_UL_CA) indicated on the bootloader screen.
Either way, its not the Euro variant; and its been modified by a previous owner (as mentioned).
Any luck getting USB fastboot working? Once you do, do fastboot getvar all, and post the output (delete IMEI and serial number before posting) so we can verify the MID and make sure you are running the right RUU.

No, its not the same problem. The OP is in a bootloop, which is very different from the screen not coming on.
Folks need to stop saying "same problem", because it really never never never is. Just a minor detail or 2 that is different, makes a huge impact on the condition and the way forward.
Leave the phone on charger for several hours, and then hold power for 30 seconds of so, and see if you can get the screen to come on.
If the screen doesn't come on, there isn't much we can do.

"completely conked off" (your previous words) is not a good description of the above. Misleading, really.
Hold the vol down button during the bootloop cycle. Don't let go until you are on the bootloader screen. Then try to connect with fastboot.

Hi..
Please find attached the result of 'fastboot getvar all'. i had also shared the same with HTCDev team and the reply is as below:
"Hello Sonal
I sincerely thank you for sending us the information that was requested . According to the information you have provided, I was able to identify the reason why the device can not receive updates at this time. For your device to without any problem , it must have all the original software or settings and STOCK.
To begin , let me explain how our devices are distributed to security S -ON to protect your settings and to ensure proper operation. Security on your device has been disabled ( S -OFF) which has allowed the following parameters change at this time prevent the upgrade is installed
cidnum : 11111111 < ---- this parameter will not get your device updates
Here are the options for you:
Option 1 - Return all device settings to their original settings or STOCK. - First you must change the parameters specified as these were originally. Once this is done, now again to contact STOCK install the operating system. At this time, HTC doesn't officially support obtaining S-Off on our devices. Having said that, I'll be happy to take a look at what's going on and at least point you in the right direction. I know this may cause some limitations in the assistance I am able to provide to you but I am more than happy to do what I can to assist you through your issue . We are happy if you contact us about any problems you might, in any part of their development process. .To begin with, the following websites are some examples where we recommend you start your research on S-Off. http://forums.xda-developers.com http://www.androidcommunity.com http://androidforums.com Please note the above web sites are not operated by HTC. Asking HTC for support by sharing info that indicates your phone was modded, was a bad idea. Of course they are going to say "we don't support this" and "return the phone to stock".
No need to go back s-on or change CID. Just run the RUU as I mentioned.

USB connection issues are usually due to issues on the PC, not the phone.
Try a different cable, different USB port (as I suggested in a previous post). Install (or re-install) HTC Sync. You may even need to try a different PC (Win7 and USB 2.0 get the best results).
Also, bear in mind that phone needs to be in bootloader-fastboot mode, for fastboot commands to work. Booted into OS or recovery for adb to work.

@redpoint73 Thank you so much, have been able to update the RUU. Updating apps now
Please excuse my ignorance I have read many post on this forum regarding my model however I am completely lost and have no idea of where I am or which part of my mobiles software I should be attempting to fix.
My phone was working fine it just went away into the draw after I upgraded to a newer handset about 18 months ago. I wanted to use it as a second mobile a few month back but when I powered it up it started be having weird. It would load ok but the back button just disappear as it isn't a physical button and one on the screen I could not operate the phone properly as it just was not there. I realized that if the phone stayed on for a while it began to get warm on the back also.
I put the phone away and thought id get to it another time as I did have some old photos I wanted that I know were stored on the phone memory the sd card ones I have already.
today I chucked it on the charger and it failed to boot up properly.
I cant get past the HTC boot up screen
I get one of either screens the htc page a black back lit screen saying cant load sence home has stopped and then stays there
if i play with the power and vol buttons I can get into boot screen and thats it.
there is also a brief moment where i was able to read in red writing this message "this build is for development purposes only do not distribute outside of HTC.
I have never tried to modify the software on my device.
It was bought in the UK from Vodafone store new
Id apprechiate if anyone is able to guide this old man to recover his old mobile
the following is what I can get up on the screen
***Software status: Modiffied ***
*** Locked ***
*** Security Waring ***

Thank you for any help you may offer.
Some part of the OS probably became corrupted while it was powered off for 18 months, thus "tripping" the Modified Software flag, and red text warning.
Steps to re-install the OS will wipe any data on the phone, so the old photos are almost certainly not possible to be recovered. So the only feasible way forward is to make the phone operable again (working OS) as a second mobile (as you mentioned); rather than recovery photos or any other personal data from it.
To that goal, you can try the following RUU, which would be the easiest way to get the phone running. Download the RUU to PC, connect the phone, and then run the RUU executable, and it will walk you through the rest:
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934555497
One caveat, is that you normally can't run an "older" version RUU (lower number than OS version currently installed)) and the RUU ends in "2" where your OS number ends in "3". But I think it still might work, since the version numbers are very close (different number at the beginning of the OS number is a different story) and will actually read as the "same" version. And I did find the RUU posted in response to a request for RUU for your same OS number (4.19.161.3) here: http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/11601146-post251.html
In any case, it doesn't hurt to try the RUU. Worst case, it fails to due version check, and does not install the RUU.
Again, if the RUU installs, it will wipe all personal data on the phone.

Thanks for your assistance if you think of anything else I will give it a go thank you.

Need to have Visual C++ installed on the PC, which may be causing the crash: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53166955&postcount=97
Needs to be a native PC, not a emulated Mac, etc.
Also, Windows XP and Windows 7 may have more luck than Win8, 10. But not always an option for some folks, of course.
