Factory reset without deleting files? - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi! Is it possible to do a factory reset without deleting personal files in the internal storage? Like pictures? I'm practicing not using an SD card since the phone has ample storage. I'm just annoyed that everything gets deleted. XD

Hello.
When you do a factory reset, you generally only wipe data and cache. Not the internal storage nor the external SD-card, unless you choose to do it.
If you're not sure though, you can just copy your whole internal storage to your computer just to be safe.

Thanks for the input! I think all Zenfone 2 running at stock ROM doesn't have an option to retain or delete files. It just basically wipes everything in the internal storage. I already have it backed up. I'm just annoyed that the pictures are all messed up when I put them back to the phone after restore. I still go through root, File Timestamp app, then unroot, just to get the images organized. XD

Why do a factory reset if you are on stock? I have downloaded the stock rom from ASUS and dirty flashed it. That gave me the full rom back (I messed up and deleted things I should not have) and did not lose any data

Well, I usually do a factory reset after I update, or when I feel that something is not right (frequently). I resort to reflashing if factory reset doesn't do the job.

I've moved up several firmware versions on my ZF2 and in the end if I don't do a complete reset on the phone it has strange issues, doesn't matter if I wipe the Cache or even wipe my ass. the OTA update doesn't work right on a stock rom too well.

Agreed! I think I've already been doing the same thing on several smartphones I've owned. Firmware update = factory reset, or sometimes, flash + factory reset. On my previous phone, I wasn't too worried about picture time stamps and arrangement since they were stored on an SD card. But now that I'm using a 64GB, I was thinking of settling down on the internal storage, but sadly, there's no option to skip on wiping the personal files. I was thinking of fixing pictures via USB, but 5.x only supports MTP.

Now that I've had time to think about it, the 64 GB wasn't really needed in my case....but I wanted the 4 GB of ram. I store everything I care about on my SD card so resetting doesn't take all my ****. I'm still on the stock Rom because I want to make sure I don't have any hardware issues and need to send it back. I was still having a few issues even after the 165 update, so " once again " I wiped the bish and started over. seems to be better now, but I may just give in and root it with something Bare-Bone because I'm hating the way all the crap is loaded on this phone.

[Q] Help - OTA JB Update today broke my phone

Hi Guys,
I have CID__001 in the UK and received the JB update this morning - great, I've been waiting for it for months, that's why I didn't bother rooting my phone like i did with my desire.
So my phone boots up and EVERYTHING keeps crashing. com.android.phone, android.process.acore, gapps, htc sync etc. Constant error messages, so i can't get rid of them to do anything. The SIM card won't prepare, the home screens never load so I can't access my apps, the battery is draining like crazy, I can't sync my contacts because sync crashes, I called the phone from my landline, the landline phone rang, but the HOX didn't. I also can't access my files on the phone through the computer, the computer recognises it's there, but when i click on it it says 0 files. I don't have a backup, but if i have to lose them to get my phone working, so be it. It's completely messed up.
I have rebooted several times, also in safe mode, but it always happens. I also tried running the RUU because I now have HBOOT 1.36 but it told me it was the wrong RUU and wouldn't update.
I wanted to copy the update file onto the external storage and rename it update.zip so I could flash it from recovery, but i can't access the files through the phone or the computer so that was a bust.
I cleared the cache from the recovery menu, still no joy.
I haven't done a factory reset yet, because I don't want to lose everything and I don't think it would work if I get all the crashes in safe mode.
I need some help, I've got some experience rooting/flashing etc, I did it a lot on my desire, but I am stuck here. I'd like to be able to fix it myself, as all HTC will do is send me a refurbished phone, charge me for the pleasure and I'll lose my data anyway.
My bootloader is unlocked, but I never rooted or flashed anything on it, it was purely stock with an unlocked bootloader.
Any suggestions? I really don't know where to go from here. Typical that I didn't meddle with my phone so I could have the official update and it messes up my phone.
Have you got stock recovery or custom?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
stock
Could be you need a factory reset which is what i would do.
Yep, its gonna have to be a factory reset, if it still don't work contact HTC clearly a fault of theirs, cant see how unlocked bootloader can play a part..
Are you 100% its stock coz you can't clear cache from stock recovery... You need custom recovery.

Factory reset worked
Yes, my recovery is definitely stock. There aren't many options, but erase cache is one of them.
Factory reset worked. I have lost everything, had to reset from the fastboot screen (not sure what it's called) because it would not work from the phone settings - whatever was necessary to factory reset my phone kept crashing. Resetting from there also formatted my external storage, all my photos and music and everything are gone.
Really annoyed at HTC right now. I waited patiently for months, could have easily rooted and flashed a custom JB ROM but I waited and their update has caused me to lose everything.
Does anyone know why this would have happened or have heard of it happening to other people?
On the up-side...Jelly Bean is now rolling out in the UK!

probably there was a problem with some other apps on the phone, so maybie that wasn't htc fault. But wasn't mass storage working? If yes you could backup everything before doing factory reset.

[Q] PLEASE HELP! galaxy s3 wont recover backup and liquidsmooth wont work properly

Hey guys.Im kinda a noob, so bear with me. I have a SGH i747 (att galaxy s3) and I rooted it on my mac using motochopper. I backed up all my apps and system data with titianium backup to my SD card, and i also backed up my stock ROM to my internal storage using ROM Manager. I then downloaded liquid smooth using my phones browser, and then I selected it within ROM manager and clicked "reboot and install' (keep in mind, i didn't wipe memory or anything) So it was stuck at the boot screen. Then i realized what i did and went and wiped data/factory reset, dalvic cache, and the other cache, within Clockworld mod recovery (vol up + power + home). After that, it worked, but only to find that all my apps were gone, and the play store and browser app didnt work. so basically softbricked however I can make phone calls and text (lost all contacts). Then i went into cwm and tried to restore my phone, at first it came up with two backups (neither of which had the name I named my backup) but said no files found and then when I mounted my storage, the bottom one said md5 mismatch but the top one worked. the top one would work for about 6 min then while it was restoring data it would reboot into liquid smooth and i would have like 3 apps i didnt have before (other times i would get stuck at the boot screen). I also tried restoring it right after I wiped data/ factory reset and cleared the caches, but then it would get stuck at the liquidsmooth boot screen. Tried pretty much everything.
I just want my phone back the way it was before root or anything, with all my data. But I backed up all my stuff besides apps to KIES, so willing to reset it to stock firmware if possible
need all the help i can get. thank you all very much

Well, when you did a factory reset, that wiped out all your apps, contacts, personal data, etc. No big deal. Your phone is in good shape, not bricked in any way, you just don't have all your personal stuff.
The only way to get it back to stock is to flash a stock firmware via ODIN or mobile ODIN, tutorials for doing both can be found here. I'm not 100% on how to do it (ODIN) with a mac other than either booting windows if you have the capability on your computer or running windows in a virtual box and using odin that way.
Or...if you have an SD card you could stick it in your computer, download another rom or liquid smooth again and reflash the proper way in recovery to get it to work. It sounds like you neglected to flash the separate GAPPS file that is required for the AOSP ROMS.
All is good. Your phone is not in bad shape. Take a breath, do some research before you flash anything else. Don't compound the problem by flashing random things that you think might help.
worked. I owe you much gratitude

[Q] Super Sluggish: 4.4.2 or Root?

Long story made short, I upgraded to 4.3 after switching over to AT&T and fell quickly in love with the selective privacy app. However, my battery would only last about fifteen seconds (exaggeration) so I upgraded again to 4.4.2 without performing due diligence. As you all well know, Google took away the privacy app. So I took the next logical step and rooted my phone (TowelRoot rocks!) and added xPrivacy.
My problem now is an extremely sluggish phone. Would this be due to the upgrade (4.4.2) or the root process? Would it make more sense to downgrade or flash a custom ROM?
Root should have no effect on performance at all. Its more likely that there is some data from a previous build causing a process to hang.
I would factory reset and start over clean. Only restore essential data.
You can also use Better Battery Stats. Find it here on xda. Great app for solving battery problems.

I think I can't see the forest for all the trees. Is a factory reset done through the phone itself? (i.e. Settings->Accounts->Backup and reset->Factory data reset) Or are you referring to finding the proper ROM and flashing through Odin?

You can do a wipe of the cache and data via recovery. Factory reset via the phone should work too.
Factory resetting from Settings actually just reboots recovery and performs it from there. So doing it either way will net the same result. And yes, thats the factory reset I was referring to.
Note, if stock recovery is on the device, factory reset formats the data partition, so ALL apps and data are wiped. If custom recovery is installed, it instead will selectively delete everything but your Internal SD Card, preserving any data you have stored there. Either way, always have a current backup.

Can not access phone storage.

Hi,
First time poster here. So recently I rooted my HTC One M8 and now I cannot access my storage and everything is being stored on my SD Card and its only 4GB so I know it won't be able to stand much longer. I don't know the main reason for this problem and I could not find anything like this Google. I tried factory restoring quite a lot of times but it has not helped. If anyone is wondering this was the method I used to root my phone its the first option you get after googling: how to root HTC One m8.
Thanks!
You need to format your device in recovery mode and refresh rom. Reset to factory settings just clears system, cache and dalvik. Doing a format u will be asked to type 'yes'. After this flash the desired Rom. Hope this helps.

yup. pretty sure. factory reset only clear up system data. it will leave pictures and other data in internal memory intact since there are no option to wipe internal memory in stock recovery
I managed to reinstall the update using Odin
unfortunately, i didn't wait enough for it to load and i factory reset the device, too
it loaded after a while
success and failure
if you had the same problem wait a little more ...
How long did it take you to load MM 6.01? Mine kept flashing SAMSUNG at me for over an hour. I gave up and reflashed Lollipop. I haven't tried a reset yet.
an hour is to long. top to wait for 15 minutes

I have even waited for several hours in the OTA update.
fisrt and foremost backup everything!
then update using last version of Odin and this file:
http://dl.downloadrom.ir/samsung/T805_Germany_6.0.1_downloadrom.ir.zip
(it is official)
then wait for 15-30 mins
if it didnt load then do the factory reset. it will hopefully load in less than 15 mins.
I am using Dr.fone to restore my data. I hope it works

All my data was wiped. nothing remained. BTW I knew that you were incorrect. Thanks anyway
is there a safe way to root and unroot my device without voiding my licence ?
Samsung provide a solution to back up before upgrade. Its called Smartswitch mobile available on play.
Allows to backup everything to sd card and restore.
