The thing I hate about forums is that when a topic is posted, it stays on track for the first few pages, but when you get to the 157th page, there's a conversation where one guy is wondering "Should I replace the ball joints on my Subaru?"
XDA is pretty good about moderating topics, but searching through pages and pages of text, hoping to find your answer that may or may not be in English, or have enough proper grammar to be sure you're not about to perform outta step with a certain procedure....It's daunting.
To me, the "Forum" needs to be brought outta the '70s when it was just a community bulletin board, and into the 21st century.
I have a proposition. A proposition to XDADevelopers. An idea. An idea that this forum could do that would put this forum on the forefront of other forums. An idea that, if implemented, other forums would look at this forum and want to do it the way XDADevelopers is doing it. A Forum is not just a website for discussion. It is literally a resource for people looking for information.
Proposition 1: Spelling and Grammar
If your gonna post in english, then you shud atleast make it readable. To put it properly: "If you're gonna post in English, the you should, at the very least, make your post readable". Too often, a six year old will post on how he was able to root his/her Galaxy Note II, and his/her instructions will read: "Just flash zip, the bot recover, then root, then turn off, done!" No one but that six year old can follow these instructions.
This site is a community of people who want to take control of the content on their phones, and make their phone as unique as the person who uses it. But, if everyone followed this six year old's instructions, we'd have a world full o' bricked phones.
Now, I realise that some of those who post are not six, but are adults from another country that are not used to typing proper English grammar. All, I would say to those people in that respect is that you may write in your post that you are not be responsible for any problems incurred in the risky business of tampering with a phone's operating system, but you could at least make the instructions clear enough that those who attempt to perform the same actions that you depict in your post will achieve the same result.
One idea on this is that if someone wants to post in English, and they know another forum member that has a better grasp on English, then that someone could PM that other member to help proofread the post before it is posted. That may seem like a big waste of time, but it would make this community more of a community when everyone is helping each other to help everyone else who will read this post.
Proposition 2: Front Page Updates and Editing
I have seen this being done on some forums (including this forum), but it doesn't appear to be mandatory. How would it be if it was mandatory?
A topic is posted. A procedure on rooting a device, let's say. The discussion gets going, and a few pages in, someone discovers an error in the post. The author makes a respective change. That's pretty much elementary.
Let's say, further into the discussion, someone encounters difficulty with a step in the procedure because one or more person's phone are different. The discussion continues until that difference is settled out. The front page should be edited to reflect this problem. Yes, every problem! But, in a structured way. An index on the front page. Structured in this way (or another): At the bottom of the front page, and index would appear:
Index
23 Jan 2016 If you have [this model phone], you may encounter [this condition]. Use [this procedure] to correct the condition.
The discussion of this condition starts here:
forum.xda-developers.com/blah/blah/balh and key notes on the conclusion can be found "here" and "here"
...and several similar entries afterwards. This kinda thing makes the forum post front page a searchable, informative page, with more to offer anyone who visits, and will benefit anyone. From the inexperienced, to the consummate professional.
Proposition 3: Multi-Threaded Threads for multiple discussions in a single post.
Too often, we'll read a thread, and someone will ask "I got [this model phone], and I'm having [this problem]", and we'll recognise this as the problem we are having too. But, when we go looking for a response to this reply, we sometimes have to go four, five, six pages (not replies, Pages!) forward to find a response. What's worse is that sometimes the response is "Go home, Newbie!". That help no one.
When I look through a list of topics for my model phone or condition, I shy away from posts that have more than 20 pages of replies. If each of those pages was a searchable thread from the original discussion, it may not be as daunting a task to search through the post to find the information I am looking for.
These are the only three ideas I can think of. If I think or more, I would probably update this page!

Ok. Serious reply. :good:
Spelling and grammar. Members here are from all over the world, and have to post in English. Many of them are at Google translate or something similar's mercy. So, tolerance my friend. If you find something too hard to understand, you can always just move on and ignore it.
Front page edits and updates. Those are entirely up to the opening poster of the thread. They can update if they wish, but it's their choice. They would never be forced to by XDA staff or automation of some sort. And any means of enforcing your ideas here would be impossible on a site this massive.
And your last point, there is a search thread function. It's a mystery to many, but it exists and works. Honest!
But thank you for the suggestions. :highfive:

I think that depends on the day and if you say the proper magic words to get it to work correctly.
I actually like the idea (assuming I understood from the long story) of having a link forward to replies of a post. There are link backs; it would be cool if your post got a link forward to this one.

Wow.
XDA is THE leading forum for Android development and hacking and has been for many years. Nothing needs to be done to make it the best, because it IS the best.
Nothing is perfect of course, but improvements are ongoing even though we may feel they can be slow sometimes.

After a short, and forced, vacation I'm back! LOL Anyways.. My ELF rom will be recooked shortly. Primary support will STILL be at htc-devs.com (I like it there ). It is a totally different style of rom cooking.. Mostly relying on extrom and .cabs to allow for greater end-user flexibility. My rom won't be for everyone, but, it should allow for a nice option--unique from other roms on here.
Creativity is the name of this rom..

There ARE newbies like myself, who bricked their phones upgrading (I had a PC crash) and figured out how to fix it by going through the WIKI even though some create threads doesn't mean every newbie does it :>
n00bs are critical to the success of XDA-Developers. We tolerate and help them because our best developers were once n00bs. Devices are constantly changing and our "experts" constantly change too.
When m$ officially releases WM6 this forum will die back down to what it is 99% of the time. Then we will quietly begin taking apart the next generation of hardware and will start looking at the next generation of Windows Mobile.
The n00bs that we tolerated will drift away except those who can contribute. You will never find this on forums with zero n00b tolerance.
I dont think n00b has EVER turned into something useful, however once we were all newbies (yes there is a difference) who didnt know what we were doing, but wanted to learn how, not sit there demanding 'HI LOL GIVE ME GUIDE FOR TO PUT MW^ ON MY SONY ERICSSON NOW LOL' then five minutes later 'WHY IS NOONE REPLY YET? In the strictest definition you are correct. I'm a half full glass kind of guy tho and I'm always thinking one will switch over. I'm sure that somewhere this has happened. More importantly, n00b bashing means that some newbies may be afraid to post and might just quietly slink away...
The great thing about the internet and the millions of subject based forums is that folks from all over the world can get together and share information on the subject of their choice. This free flow of information coupled with our fast paced lifestyle does lend to folks wanting to ask rather than search since they see it as the fastest way to get the information they seek. For the most part a gentle nudge in the right direction is all they need. The downside is that forums also provide a venue for those who lack knowledge to demonstrate their self perceived superiority anonymously. It's far easier and less costly to ignore a post that you think doesn't deserve a response. If you feel the need to reply you should respect the individuals who are providing the equipment, time, and bandwidth that makes the forum you are using possible. You do this by posting intelligent and informative responses.

Recently, with the diminishing amount of new roms and features, the hermes rom development forum started to be filled by unrelated posts. There are posts about skins, there are posts about dialers, there are posts about cleaning ports
There are already related sub-forums here for these questions. Please, only post rom development related things here. It is getting harder to track development of roms here. And moderators, please move non-development based topics to the general hermes forum.
Just a request to keep things tidy.

It could be a bit confusing to the newcomer, I could see how they would think: "Hey I have Windows Mobile version 6! This is where I should be!". Not everyone is tech savy
Even though I do see your point, maybe someone could help the mods, and notify them when a post is out of place, and the proper place it should reside.

Each main forum will have 'stickys' and that's where the first place that people tech savvy or not (if you are not willing to read then this place is not for you), raising new issues that had been covered before confuses even the new comers, there is a search function that one can use for most of the questions asked.

I agree! I have been here about 6 months now, and have read literally thousands upon thousands of threads/posts, and I'm just now posting a bit (this post should be about #20). Tons of great information, I love it, but I am an operating system junkie.
I was just trying to point out, that in today's 'gimme now' society, I can see where people get frustrated and post away, but, I do customer service for a living, have been seeing it for a long time and getting used to reading into where people are coming from.
Too bad googling for google doesn't help!
I hear your point but have to say that questions asked here do get a lot more looks and I never felt like this specific forums traffic is too bogged to navigate thru, and nowadays it's the only one i am active in somewhat regularly
check out the "How to Ask Questions..." link in my sig... kind of old, but still relevant
Hi.
I'm a n00b and I'm getting annoyed at the irrelevant posts in this forum!
Mods, let's clear out the irrelevant stuff and keep to what this forum is about, WM6 Roms and all the cooking going on by the talented chefs out there!
Search. Search again and if you don't find then post in the relevant forum!
my 2p worth!
I understand this, and I totally agree.
But I have tried using the search option, and it just resets the search fields, it never searches for anything. Only sometimes the search function work.
Instead of using the xda-developers search engine, I have to reside google to find on xda-developers instead, that always works, but I would prefer to use XDA's one, as it had the posts, date, author, topics, everything more detailed, and when it has worked, I have gotten the answers I need.
Hey all. Ever notice all these different devices we have here at xda. It's kinda hard to navigate sometimes when I'm looking for devices. Just a thought, maybe we should get them organized by manufacturer or something. It'd make browsing around the forums much easier and reduce a lot of cluster on the forums.
What do you think?
On my Inspire 4G
I think that's a great idea
Try using the search box in the top right corner, saves you all the time in the world.....
Hope that helps..........
Try using "compact view" on the homepage to sort them better
I think it would be better organized if it was more like AndroidForums.com
nice idea...
I agree with the compact view but it still leaves a lot of clutter among the list of devices. Now if it were sorted by the manufacturer it would make the initial forum page much smaller, maybe even only 10-15 sections. Or even for a little reorganization put the devices by the same maker all together instead of a mixed list. Cause the newest devices are at The bottom but are all still mixed among makers. It'd also make new members easier to navigate the forums when looking for their device.

Not sure I understand you. From what I can see on the site, I can search a device by OS or Manufacturer. I have a yellow Drop down menu in the top right side of the site that splits everything by brand or OS.
Rageing you're saying the exact idea I was saying. Just how its sorted by os or mfg but if it was setup like that by default it makes a great first impression for new users and for fast easy searching among the forums
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Categorising them by Manufacturer would make a lot of sense.
This would also help distinguish general forums from the device specific ones.

I am not very active on this site mainly because my old phone was never given a forum here(Moto Backflip) but wanted to comment anyways because I hope to be more active now that I have a D2G. Anyways in regards to this issue at hand, I am sorry to say but really? I dont mean to sound like a smart.. but you really expect people to read that? Much less for new members to find it..
I think maybe what people mean when they say sorting things by device is like this:
Motorola: Category
-Flipout(forum)
--General(sub-forum)
--Accessories(sub-forum)
--Development(sub-forum)
-Droid 2
--General(sub-forum)
--Accessories(sub-forum)
--Development(sub-forum)
Then if you set the sub-forums not to set on the forum index, this shortens the forum index substantially making it much quicker and easier to find your device. Like I said I am just assuming on that, so if I am wrong, this would be my suggestion on the matter.

Hi Mourer09
Were you not asking whether it was possible to sort them that way? I was actually saying that they have done so with the drop down list at the top of the site
So how does one become a moderator? The reason I ask is that I am SO sick of reading the same stupid questions over and over and over (as are majority of the members here). This phone has a few talented DEVs, but as a whole the community for the E4GT is terrible. No one reads, no one searches, and frankly, some of the questions that people ask on here shows that they shouldn't even own a SMARTPHONE!
I remember how it used to be back in the day, as do some of you. If you weren't a DEV and were just here to use what was provided, you kept your damn mouth shut. The only time you spoke up is if you searched far and wide and exhausted all your other resources...then you asked your question and hoped the real DEVs on here would give you the time of day...and that was great! You actually had to LEARN something...
These days, and for some reason this phones community is the worst, the "I want it now" pigs overrun every freaking thread on the forum. It even makes searching impossible because your "results" just pop up the same stupid question being asked over and over.
Anyways, I could go on forever, but I only want to know one thing...how can I become a moderator and help clean some of this up so it is better moving forward?
Rule of thumb with any forum: if you have ask to become a mod, you're not going to be one. I'm relatively new here, and to flashing phones in general as the epic 4g ttouch is my first smartphone. So when you mention how any who isn't some sort of Dev should keep their mouth shut I can't help but take it personally. If you really did want to become a mod this wasn't a way to do it. Believe me I'm not trying to overstep boundaries, I know my place. But you're only coming off angry.
Can't be a mod? You can always do what the guy in the image is doing...although you'd drive the mods crazy.

People asking the same questions over and over along with a sense of self entitlement aren't going anywhere. You just have to live with it.

I hope the people replying here aren't the ones I'm referring to in my Ambien induced rant above. It was just meant to point out that there are a growing (and outnumbering) group of people that won't take the time to learn and be PROACTIVE about things that could break their phone. They are the ones that are REACTIVE and expect the world. Case in point: we STILL have people flashing the international 9100 ICS ROMS...STILL! I'm not saying we all need to get this elitist chip on our shoulders, but it takes everyone to clean this crap up. For the longest time I never knew why some people flamed the crap out of other members for asking questions....now I know.
I hope the people reading this that can read between the lines and see what I'm trying to do appreciate it. I also hope that those who take offense look in mirror...
If you can't point out flaws without trying to help fix, then please don't comment at all.

Actually I agree with you. People search and search less and made no attempt to understand at least the basic informations before rooting or customizing their phones. I spent a solid 12 hours googling and searching before deciding to root my phone.
But you are obviously not going to win this one. Forget asking people to search the forum before asking question. There is a two page thread on Epic 4g Touch General area about disabling update notification and people don't even bother to read the OP thoroughly before asking the question. They wonder why what they did did not work when it is clearly explained in the OP.
I kinda see what you mean, but I use the search more since they removed the Captcha....I really hated that. I think we should let people know about it...because that was the reason why I didn't use the search in the first place.
Oh...and also the search time limit

You have to be understanding here .... Some people on here have been here since the hero and know how it was back then , but alot are totally new to smart phones and basically ignorant to how a tech forum like this is... They don't know to search and such ...they found this by google and have no clue how to go about getting help so they post in the wrong forums and such..this in turn causes existing members to be frustrated and not help like they should...in fact there should be more to do to become a member here and get posting privileges ...
This link can show a littlehttp://www.emarketer.com/blog/index.php/tag/how-many-mobile-phone-users-have-smartphones/

My Motive
However XDA is a wonderful community there is still some room for improvement. XDA is great, as so are 'most' of the people around here, but however it's greatness there is still
one thing that does sometimes annoy me, is its organisation..
Let's be honest some people don't know where they should start their thread of where to find stuff, on the other hand most people who do have those problems are mostly plain stupid or are to lazy to search.
Yet I believe, that a little re-organisation will be able to address this matter and makes our lives, as the lives of users, mods or developers a little easier.
Lucky for you guys, I am not the guy that just complains, without constructing or achieving a potential solution.
I already put some hard work in it and I am fully prepared to do even more if necessarily , but before you judge me, please read and see see what I had in mind.
My Goals
Optimizing your User Experience
Creating new Levels of User Potential
Simplifying current structures and its organisations
Smoother, Faster, Clearer and Better
Introducing child-boards
I know it looks plain simple and you can believe I barely made any changes. BUT THAT IS THE KEY! That is my GOAL, keeping things as slim as possible. Still a child board can achieve an immense difference just only in your experience.
Imagine this simple user interface: Where you'll be able find to find a sub-board with ONLY ROM Releases or just everything related to it, so as for kernels.
Still I am perfectly aware that the ANDROID development goes beyond, ROM's and Kernels, YET these 2 elements in my opinion the main reason why people go to XDA, or they create kernels and ROM's or they want to flash them.
~~~ Organisational Problems ~~~
No offense but isn't this a little weird, that so many people voted, where they'd best place their own thread?
Or is still someone able to tell, where I should fit this topic?
Child boards under my recommendation:
Separated Product Model Boards:
Even though people might find it lame, just know flashing the wrong firmware onto your phone, can brick your device,
accidents easily occur and even I noticed I accidently clicked onto the G development without even noticing it after 5 min and however the difference might look minor to some of you.
Why would you put 2 devices in the same area, knowing they require different systems, firmware and work on different hardware, meaning even though they are in the same range, THEY STILL DEFER
General Talk:
NewsThis community has a lot of potential users, that are motivated and willing to uncover the latest and hottest news for their phone or their device and I am fully aware that we do have XDA Tv.
But still I strongly believe this could be a very very useful sub-forum. Moderators or Forum Staff can sticky their posts to announce new rules or competitions
and only selected members will be able to post news concerning their galaxy s2 or their device, to decrease chances of any spam topics.
So why would we miss out on this potential, why wouldn't we publish a story that for example, AGPS, allows you to get a faster GPS lock or people invented a new script to conserve 50% more battery than usual,
does it really harm anyone, that one story wouldn't be that interesting, as this place could offer you, a pool of different stories that might catch your interest.
Nobody is forced to publish something, neither are you to read, you'll only have the Galaxy S2 knowledge library right at your disposal.
Android Developent:
Seperated ROM & Kernel BoardWouldn't it be way easier to find all your ROM releases in one place and ONLY them?
Would we even need updated indexes anymore, when this would all be clear and accessible in one single location,
would we even be bothered to posts polls as where should I put this thread as you might have already seen above?
Wouldn't this make your user experience more simpler finding in two clicks whatever you'd like?
I'd certainly vow for this!
ROM & Kernels Separated, everything else, in the android development thread (Applications, scripts, Tweaks, ...
Wow - thank you for your well thought out and detailed posts. We actually do have some of the changes you are recommending in the pipeline and will certainly take your other recommendations into consideration in the future.
You shouldn't' be thanking me, it's my privilege I can be part of this community.
I saw a lot of potential around here and I am not much of a scripter, neither am I able to cook mods or roms
But I just wanted to give something back in return
I am just a simple student from Belgium with some crazy ideas
Still I feel honored my contribution will be taken in consideration and if you just require my help
Or you want me to do something, don't even hesitate to ask
Yours sincerely, Intensity
I for one, love this new idea. The separated rom and kernel sections are superb, it would be so much easier for users to find what they want. I could spend time writing every little thing down, but im on a short schedule. All in all, I want this
