Recently, with the diminishing amount of new roms and features, the hermes rom development forum started to be filled by unrelated posts. There are posts about skins, there are posts about dialers, there are posts about cleaning ports
There are already related sub-forums here for these questions. Please, only post rom development related things here. It is getting harder to track development of roms here. And moderators, please move non-development based topics to the general hermes forum.
Just a request to keep things tidy.

Lol you funny man, I agree with the original post however so if we can just search before we post eh ... that's what the search function is for
Agree with OP, using google search, reading the stickys, and using the sub-forums! Or U can contact my xda admin at 007-007-bond

It could be a bit confusing to the newcomer, I could see how they would think: "Hey I have Windows Mobile version 6! This is where I should be!". Not everyone is tech savy
Even though I do see your point, maybe someone could help the mods, and notify them when a post is out of place, and the proper place it should reside.

Each main forum will have 'stickys' and that's where the first place that people tech savvy or not (if you are not willing to read then this place is not for you), raising new issues that had been covered before confuses even the new comers, there is a search function that one can use for most of the questions asked.

I agree! I have been here about 6 months now, and have read literally thousands upon thousands of threads/posts, and I'm just now posting a bit (this post should be about #20). Tons of great information, I love it, but I am an operating system junkie.
I was just trying to point out, that in today's 'gimme now' society, I can see where people get frustrated and post away, but, I do customer service for a living, have been seeing it for a long time and getting used to reading into where people are coming from.
Too bad googling for google doesn't help!
I hear your point but have to say that questions asked here do get a lot more looks and I never felt like this specific forums traffic is too bogged to navigate thru, and nowadays it's the only one i am active in somewhat regularly
check out the "How to Ask Questions..." link in my sig... kind of old, but still relevant
Hi.
I'm a n00b and I'm getting annoyed at the irrelevant posts in this forum!
Mods, let's clear out the irrelevant stuff and keep to what this forum is about, WM6 Roms and all the cooking going on by the talented chefs out there!
Search. Search again and if you don't find then post in the relevant forum!
my 2p worth!
I understand this, and I totally agree.
But I have tried using the search option, and it just resets the search fields, it never searches for anything. Only sometimes the search function work.
Instead of using the xda-developers search engine, I have to reside google to find on xda-developers instead, that always works, but I would prefer to use XDA's one, as it had the posts, date, author, topics, everything more detailed, and when it has worked, I have gotten the answers I need.

The Q&A forums have helped tidy up various forums (mainly android based) where a lot of new users are driven to XDA by the new smart phone devices aimed at general consumers instead of tech users - as was the case in the the good ol' days . People are less and less inclined to search and just post for answers. Despite our best efforts they continue to post so we found it's better to give them someone to ask little questions that don't clutter up the other device sub forums. General is for more general problems, maybe HW, maybe opinions on the phone, complaints with carriers, etc.
I can't recall the discussion on seperate Themes and Apps forums in the moderator area, so I can't comment.
IMHO as the OP said, the app and themes are better in a sub forum. I too think that the Q&A section is confusing (may be it should be a sub forum in general forum?)

Yeah, I can see that the Q&A forums can be useful, but they can be a little confusing at first... but that's just a matter of getting used to it, so now that I start to see it with another eyes I thank you guys for that
Regarding the separate Themes and Apps forum I apologise but I think that I created that discussion somewhere inside the HD2 forums so probably it was missed...
But it is still an ideia An example is that there are a lot of people that don't really care for themes, so it is quite hard to check for new apps for the HD2, and vice-versa, because there's a lot of "movement" in that forum...

Easy buddy. My post wasn't mean or anything. Questions are questions no matter what they pertain to. I was just letting him know that its the wrong section and if he would have looked around he would have seen that this topic is being actively discussed.
lmao people forreal. let a moderator switch the section for him. unless you seriously have like forum obsessive compulsive disorder, just ignore it. god forbid he post in the wrong section and you have to read something slightly irrelevant... if you tell people wrong section you seriously have nothing better to do than correct people on forums and you're also probably one of the A-holes that corrects even the slightest mistakes in diction. get over it.

We have been getting lots of questions about the postcount limit in developmental area's. Most of these questions were along these lines:
What do I have to do to be able to ask a question in the developmental fora?
How many posts do I have to have before I can post in the developmental fora?
Does this mean you want users to start spamming?
Why are you judging users based on their postcount (I have been a long time user on other fora, e.g. I know the ropes)?
There are a few common misunderstandings about the developmental fora I want to address before I dive further into the subject.
Common misunderstandings: (not true)
Developmental fora are for asking questions
It's been said so many times before and I'll say it again, developmental fora are there to release your own creations. Applications, kernels and kitchens all belong there. Guides and tutorials are usually allowed but by definition do not belong there. Everything else does NOT belong there (questions (NOT about development either), news, links to someone else's development). Basically, if you did not create "it", then doesn't belong in development.
How many posts?
10.
You are encouraging members to spam!
No we are not. This is meant for users to take some time to get acquainted with the idiosyncrasies, the rules and the ideology of the site. Spamming is not allowed as per rule 7: Do not spam. Doing so will get you infracted and your posts will be deleted, leaving you worse off than before.
Why are you judging members by their post count?
For lack of a better alternative. I challenge anyone to come up with a better alternative, and share it with us. Over the years we have seen the impact the cluttering up of developmental fora had on the amount of energy needed to keep threads in shape or visible. This wasn't productive at all. We get that people might have experience from other fora and think this is a little over the top for them, but there are rarely any developers amongst the people that want to create new threads. There are a few people with a genuine need to post a thread in the developmental fora (developers), these people can contact a moderator to help them get sorted.
12's tutorial on how to get your postcount above 10:
Keep in mind that only people we the genuine intent to post one of their developmental projects or with a (well explained) bug report NEED a postcount above 10. Nonetheless I'll give you some guidelines on how to achieve this goal in a community accepted way:

I am creating this thread to submit some ideas to possible improvements to the wonderful XDA site. I do not think this belongs hidden in the hundreds of pages of posts in the "From the users to the mods and admins" thread. This is a different thread where users can design their concepts and post them up as images. Please visit that thread however for some awesome suggestions.
As I say in all my guides, suggestions are like gold to me and I just want to make my service better. All reasonable comments are welcome. Please PM me if you have any urgent problems. I am sorry if my service is uninvited. I have two extension threads

As for thanking PMs, whilst it'd be useful a large number of times, it would be abused by people who think they're cool by having tonnes of thanks. I agree with being able to suggest a sticky though, and perhaps even to remove a sticky if it contains outdated information.
Yup, the PM thanking would get abused pretty fast, and people would exchange PM's so they could thank each other over and over again.

Hey there,
Thankyou very much for the comment. Good to see you read my post.
Just a suggestion, some people might have mistook that comment for spam trying to hit the 10. Be careful or your posts may be "cleaned" permanently from XDA.
Thanks again.
The PC site definitely needs a "Participated" tab just like the app has. It's great since we can easily see if any old threads have been posted in, etc. This would also be very helpful in the offtopic section, where people frequent the game threads and subscription to so many can be avoided. Especially iif we don't want email notifications to game threads, but we want them for dev threads

I do not use the APP because my x8 is quite slow as it is and memory is quite an issue. If it is not too much trouble, could I ask that you or someone else could post a screenshot of that feature. I will then try and make a concept image.
Also, as a note to everyone reading, this thread is designed for the concept images not just the suggestion. If you can make the image, go ahead. Or leave your suggestion and I will try to make it if it is reasonable/feasible.
Thanks
Thanks to QuantumFoam for this. Image has been blurred at author's request.
Also, after thinking about it, I believe the site already has something like this. A feature I had been using ever since I got onto XDA.
On the PC version, click on your name (Deftone) > then the statistics tab > then find all posts by Deftone (Or your name)
You can also "Find all threads by yourself" too.
If you still want me to conjure something up, just request again
The thing I hate about forums is that when a topic is posted, it stays on track for the first few pages, but when you get to the 157th page, there's a conversation where one guy is wondering "Should I replace the ball joints on my Subaru?"
XDA is pretty good about moderating topics, but searching through pages and pages of text, hoping to find your answer that may or may not be in English, or have enough proper grammar to be sure you're not about to perform outta step with a certain procedure....It's daunting.
To me, the "Forum" needs to be brought outta the '70s when it was just a community bulletin board, and into the 21st century.
I have a proposition. A proposition to XDADevelopers. An idea. An idea that this forum could do that would put this forum on the forefront of other forums. An idea that, if implemented, other forums would look at this forum and want to do it the way XDADevelopers is doing it. A Forum is not just a website for discussion. It is literally a resource for people looking for information.
Proposition 1: Spelling and Grammar
If your gonna post in english, then you shud atleast make it readable. To put it properly: "If you're gonna post in English, the you should, at the very least, make your post readable". Too often, a six year old will post on how he was able to root his/her Galaxy Note II, and his/her instructions will read: "Just flash zip, the bot recover, then root, then turn off, done!" No one but that six year old can follow these instructions.
This site is a community of people who want to take control of the content on their phones, and make their phone as unique as the person who uses it. But, if everyone followed this six year old's instructions, we'd have a world full o' bricked phones.
Now, I realise that some of those who post are not six, but are adults from another country that are not used to typing proper English grammar. All, I would say to those people in that respect is that you may write in your post that you are not be responsible for any problems incurred in the risky business of tampering with a phone's operating system, but you could at least make the instructions clear enough that those who attempt to perform the same actions that you depict in your post will achieve the same result.
One idea on this is that if someone wants to post in English, and they know another forum member that has a better grasp on English, then that someone could PM that other member to help proofread the post before it is posted. That may seem like a big waste of time, but it would make this community more of a community when everyone is helping each other to help everyone else who will read this post.
Proposition 2: Front Page Updates and Editing
I have seen this being done on some forums (including this forum), but it doesn't appear to be mandatory. How would it be if it was mandatory?
A topic is posted. A procedure on rooting a device, let's say. The discussion gets going, and a few pages in, someone discovers an error in the post. The author makes a respective change. That's pretty much elementary.
Let's say, further into the discussion, someone encounters difficulty with a step in the procedure because one or more person's phone are different. The discussion continues until that difference is settled out. The front page should be edited to reflect this problem. Yes, every problem! But, in a structured way. An index on the front page. Structured in this way (or another): At the bottom of the front page, and index would appear:
Index
23 Jan 2016 If you have [this model phone], you may encounter [this condition]. Use [this procedure] to correct the condition.
The discussion of this condition starts here:
forum.xda-developers.com/blah/blah/balh and key notes on the conclusion can be found "here" and "here"
...and several similar entries afterwards. This kinda thing makes the forum post front page a searchable, informative page, with more to offer anyone who visits, and will benefit anyone. From the inexperienced, to the consummate professional.
Proposition 3: Multi-Threaded Threads for multiple discussions in a single post.
Too often, we'll read a thread, and someone will ask "I got [this model phone], and I'm having [this problem]", and we'll recognise this as the problem we are having too. But, when we go looking for a response to this reply, we sometimes have to go four, five, six pages (not replies, Pages!) forward to find a response. What's worse is that sometimes the response is "Go home, Newbie!". That help no one.
When I look through a list of topics for my model phone or condition, I shy away from posts that have more than 20 pages of replies. If each of those pages was a searchable thread from the original discussion, it may not be as daunting a task to search through the post to find the information I am looking for.
These are the only three ideas I can think of. If I think or more, I would probably update this page!

Ok. Serious reply. :good:
Spelling and grammar. Members here are from all over the world, and have to post in English. Many of them are at Google translate or something similar's mercy. So, tolerance my friend. If you find something too hard to understand, you can always just move on and ignore it.
Front page edits and updates. Those are entirely up to the opening poster of the thread. They can update if they wish, but it's their choice. They would never be forced to by XDA staff or automation of some sort. And any means of enforcing your ideas here would be impossible on a site this massive.
And your last point, there is a search thread function. It's a mystery to many, but it exists and works. Honest!
But thank you for the suggestions. :highfive:

I think that depends on the day and if you say the proper magic words to get it to work correctly.
I actually like the idea (assuming I understood from the long story) of having a link forward to replies of a post. There are link backs; it would be cool if your post got a link forward to this one.

Wow.
XDA is THE leading forum for Android development and hacking and has been for many years. Nothing needs to be done to make it the best, because it IS the best.
Nothing is perfect of course, but improvements are ongoing even though we may feel they can be slow sometimes.
'Nuff said.
