Samsung Galaxy S6 920P Hotspot ROOT? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S6

I have been googling like crazy trying to find a way to enable hotspotting for the s6. I have rooted it and have TWRP installed. Do I have to install I custom rom? This is the first phone I have not installed CM on so I'm abit of a newb when it comes to TouchWiz. Thanks! Sorry for the stupid question.

I tried the same with rooted and SIM unlocked phone but it's from the network side since I have unlimited data plan with AT&T. Should naturally work on a non AT&T phone or AT&T with limited data plan. AT&T happily suggested I give up my unlimited data and I could then tether or hotspot as much as I wanted....up to the data limit of course.

Does the phone has to be rooted? I tried this on Sprint Non-Rooted S6 G920P phone. didn't work.

Yeah, go lookup HiddenMenu.apk first. Try that worked for me. May just be sprint and t-mobile though

Have you tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-sprint/general/lollipop-hotspot-root-flashing-t3048163

This might be silly question. But what did you guy say to get MSL code from Sprint? What do I need it for?
I told them that I am having data connectivity issue and want to re-program my phone. They provided me some 786.. code to reprogram, which clearly was not MSL code.
MSL apps are not working for me..
Thanks everyone...

I just asked for the msl code.

I looked up that thread and it involves opening up the dialer and entering ##3282# but nothing happens, if I hit call it attempts to call a phone number with no success. Any ideas?

Post # 3 in that thread has an APK that you should try.

Tried that too...the phone rejects that apk. downloaded it several times and it won't install

Also, if your dialer codes are not working.. Goto Settings>Activate This Device. In the top right, click more, and then PST. You can access your ##DATA# menu from there along with many others. Hope this helps.
I was able to do it using the manual method described above. Thanks for all your help!

OMG! (Anyone???) samsung gn2 networks prob

I have a sprint samsung galaxy note 2 that is rooted and flashed to verizon running macksrom 5.0 and i started having this problem. the problem is i can call from my phone when it is not on wifi but the 3g/4g isnt showing up top in the status bar i cant access the internet unless im on wifi. when i go into settings and click on mobile networks it acts like it is going to do it then it hangs at a black screen and a box pops up and says unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped ive tried cleaning caches and fixing permissions, nothing helps, there is also another thing that pops up and says error #89 unknown error. it also says when i click on stuff, use touchwiz or xperia to perform this action. Always or just once.) I bought this samsung gn 2 online everything was already done to it. I think whoever installed the macks rom must have left the the touchwiz on it. Because it keeps asking me when i do things, perform action using touchwiz or xperia I also noticed that i have goomanager on it. Can i use the goomanager to reflash this phone? If so can someone give me information on how to properly do it. i also read something about mobile odin. Which one would be the easiest to use?
You have too much going on there. I would relash the rom. Make sure you wipe system, casche and devick; may want to do old school and wipe three times.
Goo Manager is probably suppose to be there, by design from the ROM developer. That should have been in the OP on the ROM three, along with known issues.

Doesn't verizon run a slightly different hardware version from sprint? Are you trying to connect to the verizon or the sprint network? If verizon, there are two possibilities. 1 - hardware, the sprint phone just doesn't like the verizon signal. (unlikely) 2. - ROM, is the ROM the sprint version or the verizon version? if it's the sprint version I would say that framework differences are causin the issue and would reflash the correct version for your carrier (or the correct port - the hardware differences I mentioned earlier)
Have you called customer service about getting your phone set up on their network? About getting the IMEI number registered in their database?
In other words what have you already tried with this used phone in order to get it set up on your provider's network?

it was originaly a sprint phone that was rooted and flashed to verizon. ive been using it for months on the verizon network and have had zero problems until about five days ago. i dont know if the rom is sprint or verizon. how do i tell? i would reflash it if i knew what i am doing. i am a complete uber noob. im just hoping someone will give me directions how to reflash it. i dont care what rom i just want it to work again on the verizon network. i want to be able to use it to go geocaching with my sons. just got it all set up ready to go caching with em and the very next day it decided to go mental on me.
I would check out the thread on taking the Sprint GN2 to TMobile, Verizon, Boost, and Ting. I think it's in the question and trouble shooting subforum.

[Q] Help with Verizon SCH-I535 Phone to use on T-mobile

Hey everyone and thanks for taking the time to read this,
So the story goes as so: After doing some research couple months ago about the capability of the Verizon Galaxy S3 to work on T-mobile, i purchased it, and got it to successfully work on T-mobile(texts, calls, wi-fi). The problem is, i just recently upgraded to include a data plan, and i cannot access the internet, despite taking my phone to my cell phone dealer and contacting T-mobile.T-mobile even sent me a guide to do a mastery reset to factory in hopes to solve this problem, only to tell me afterwards that the phone version SCH-I535 is a "verizon locked-software" and i won't be able to set up an APN to work on the T-mobile network. This was all due to the fact that i was not able to set up a APN for T-mobile, and every time i tried to access it through setting, it brought me to a blank black page with the only option of "Reset to Default". After reading other forums and talking with some people, many have suggested i take this issue to XDA to find a solution.
So, here i am.....Does anyone know if it is possible for me to break/root/ or whatever it is called so i can successfully access the t-mobile network on my phone? Preferably an easier guide since i am sort of a newbie at this sort of stuff.
Thanks again for reading.
Before your Contract change, you were able to receive and make calls successfully with T-Mo Sim right ? Even now you can make calls too correct ? The reason I am asking this is to be able to check if you are really unlocked off of VZW. If you are not unlocked, then that would be the first step.
You are right, the APNs do drive Data Connection. If the stock firmware does not allow you to change APNs then you will have to root. Please post a screen of your Settings > About phone that shows your Rom Version, Baseband and Kernel.

Hey Perseus, thanks a lot for taking the time to reply. I bought the phone in the summer off someone who had verizon. I have always had T-mobile, and considering this phone is GSM, i decided to buy it because it would probably work for T-mobile. I had the phone unlocked, and i am currently using it to make calls, texts, and even use wi-fi with no problem. The only problem at this time is that i recently added a data plan which i cannot currently use. Here is a screen shot of what you have requested.
Thanks again
First try
Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Preferred Network Type.See what it is set to. Change it to LTE/GSM/WCDMA if needed. See the other option System Select as well.
Also separately try the following.
Hit ##DATA# in the Dialer. In the subsequent Menu choose EDIT > OTHERS > LTE APN
If all fails, please Root the phone and then try. The way you go about is
1. Flash a Custom Recovery via Odin. Make sure the version of Custom recovery is for your model D2VZW not D2TMO.
2. Flash a SuperSU zip file via Recovery and then hit fix permissions in the recovery.
Try the APN Settings after that. IF you can actually access them, then set them according to this link.
If all the above fails, I'd suggest a custom Rom for d2VZW.
You will never get 4g trust me I had one... you will just get the E

Ok, so i tried to changed it to LTE and i got no service at all, so i switched it back to Global. I also tried the dialer thing several times, and got the " connection problem or invalid MMI code"
So i guess i am going to have to root the phone? Does anyone know a good video tutorial or written tutorial on how to safely do this? Also, what exactly is rooting?

You have to enable the mmi codes to use them. Anyway as stated above your reply you will never get 3g or 4g just edge (seen it personally) which is pretty darn slow.. Not worth it if you ask me and be paying for data.. If you still want to root it and keep trying to add sons check the Verizon forums.. They could probably help you a lot more than on this side of the forums

Guys, he is not getting ANY data signal at all. His problem isn't getting the specific icon but being not able to change APNs.
@HackThisThing, you are better off following up on Verizon Device forum. That forum does have a video tutorial for Rooting. Here's forum link.
I don't think you will be able to change APNs without rooting. I checked with a buddy of mine who has the same device as you.
Here's a good answer to What is Rooting ?
Even if you CAN fix it, why bother if you can only get 2G? I'd sell it or trade it for a phone that's more compatible with T-Mobile 's network instead of paying for data and only getting dial-up speeds. I get that solving problems is fun, but OP do you want to live with only 2G?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
I don't agree with that assessment. Just like the T999L phone, this device will work on LTE Bands just fine. OP just needs to wait for LTE to be rolled out in their area. There's a coverage map and roll out schedule on T-Mo website and the T-Mo News blog.
It's worth a look, but could still leave them with patchy coverage. If it's going to be a while, why wait when it's not hard to just trade the phone? I guess I don't see a reason why hold out on getting a Verizon phone to work when you could just get one that works now with little to no monetary loss. It's just a Verizon S3, not really something worth "waiting" for when they could get the same thing but more functional on their network of choice.
They made an honest mistake and waiting might give them "good enough" service - but other than that they're stuck with dial up speed only and risk bricking a phone they could just trade or sell now.
Maybe I'm just impatient and risk averse.

OP has already purchased this VZW version.

[Q] Cannot update prl after activating service with Straight Talk

Before I describe my issue, I'd like to state that I have searched high and low for answer to no avail. I am using a Sprint Galaxy Note II that has been upgraded to 4.3 stock. It was unrooted when my issue began, but I went ahead and rooted it to try and help my problem.
Two days ago I signed up for Straight Talk Bring your own phone. I entered the provided code which took me to the hands free activation. The activation proceeded successfully (my phone said success) until it forced a prl update. It says it fails (each time it tries the prl update) and immediately reboots the phone. Once booted the activation attempts again and repeats over and over unless I cancel before it gets to the prl update. Strangely enough if I try to make a call it says my phone has not yet been activated, and yet a few times after waiting I can make calls (verified they are coming from my new number), but no data functions. If I then try and complete the activation (the incomplete notification remains), I'm back to square one.
Straight Talk techs have assured me that my phone is active throughout their system and the sprint towers are having no issues. They say other Note II's have been successful. My phone is communicating with the towers as I get the LTE icon during activation.
As an experiment I activated a Samsung Galaxy 3 (never rooted) using the same method and it went through fine. It updated the prl and is now working like a champ. I am now at wits end with my Note. I have faith that all would function if I could get the prl to update and I haven't a clue how to get there from here. I have also been unsuccessful obtaining my MSL even after rooting. A little history on the phone is that it was active with Sprint and it was rooted at 4.1. I returned it to stock to take the 4.3 update.
If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

If it's active in their system and if their systems are compatible with your phone then you should be able to update the profile and PRL with no issues. Make sure you're connected to WiFi. There isn't much else you can do short of cloning another phones information onto it but then you won't get LTE. Are you sure it's active on their system and not still attached to Sprint?

It is active in their system and unfortunately I don't have another phone to clone. My prl says 2010. It will not update over wifi or LTE. I've tried factory resets (before I rooted). I'm sure it's something with my phone. I just can't pinpoint it. The only progress I have made is that I did manage to extract my MSL. The reps at straight talk said my phone would use sprint towers to activate. Also I'm wondering it my note would use the same prl at the S3 I activated. Thanks so much for trying to help.
You can do *22804 and it should update the prl

Although I may be completely wrong here, I can only go off of experience saying I haven't had a problem updating the profile and PRL or getting service from a "flashed to" carrier, by replacing the original carriers settings. I've tried NUMEROUS Sprint and Boost Mobile PRLs on my phones (I've had a EVO 4G, S2, Nexus, EVO LTE, and Note 2 on Boost...yeah I change phones a lot) and never had an issue getting Boost Mobile service since they use Sprint's towers.
First off, is the Note 2 still active on Sprint? CALL Sprint and verify this. I know if I try to activate a Verizon iPhone 4 on Page Plus that it'll default to Verizon OTA programming and pull that data when I WANT it to pull PP's OTA data via *228 (or *22890). Same thing may be applied here (except with update profile instead of *228). Secondly, is the phone's MEID the same as what you registered on the account? Although I think the L900 is set to show the OEM MEID in settings, I've seen some US Cellular (and maybe Verizon) phones that have shown the OEM MEID in settings but when hooked up in diag mode through the computer showed the real MEID which was completely different. Just something else to consider to make sure you cover everything!

MMM I think I know what's going on here. You need to change your MDN and MIN to something other than 000000xxxx. I think that's forcing a HFA loop every time you boot the phone. Are you familiar with CDMA workshop or DFS CDMA tool? You'll need one of these to possibly fix your problem. Essentially, i think your phone needs to update the profile. This wouldn't be a big issue but I think HFA is strictly sprint and update profile won't work until you get rid of the HFA nag without disabling SprintDM. Check out the two programs I mentioned.

This might just work. I have CDMA workshop demo version but am unsure how to conduct the procedure. I really need to get it fixed because now hubby is in the hospital and has the s3. This is my only means of communicating with him when I'm not there. Wish I had the funds to just buy a note 2 that is unlocked but that is not an option right now.

If you're on a CDMA network, meaning your carrier didn't give you a SIM card, then having an unlocked phone does nothing for you. Straight talk might be CDMA and GSM though, never looked too much into it. Anyway, you're going to need to dial ##DIAG# in your dialer to bring up the "port" menu. Leave it on PDA and select Qualcomm USB settings or something along those lines. You should be at MTP. Switch it to DM+Modem+ADB. Plug your device into your computer. In device manager you should be able to see which port your computer assigned to it. If you have to, change the port number to be COM25 or under. Go into CDMA WS, connect to the port, send the password: 2012112120131219 and your SPC. Go to NAM1 and read. You should see your MDN and MIN are kind of zeroed out. Replace them with something other than zeros, like MDN: 7737777777 MIN: 3122222222. Reboot your phone. HFA nag should've gone away (if you're on 4.3). Now you should be able to update your profile WITHOUT having to go through Sprint's HFA, and after it grabs everything it needs, you should be on Straight Talk.

Tried the above but got lost on MIN. (is this the same as MSID?). Didn't find MIN anywhere. This is what I did try and it may have worked..so far, so good. I changed my number via the Straight Talk automated. I then tried the HFA which failed again, so I went in and maually programmed my username, MDN and MSID. I then tried mms and making calls and it worked. I then used root explorer to get rid of HFA by deleting the Sprint update apk. The prl 2010 remained and Sprint Zone says it is current. My only issue is that internet does not work though mms does. That is an issue I am now going to try and tackle. For the record, internet also does not work on the S3 that completed the HFA and prl update successfully. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix that I am open for suggestions. Thanks for your help on this. Please see screenshots..
Yes MIN is the same as MSID. You needed to program the numbers through a CDMA flashing program to get rid of the HFA nag. Now that you've programmed them through the phone...I'm not too sure how you're going to deal with the HFA. Yes, you disabled it, but you also disabled the ability to update the profile which is what you need to do for your data to work...
Success!
Success!! Here's what I did...Found an old Sprint prl file and copied it to sd card. Flashed Digiblur Rom which includes ability to write a prl file in settings. Used root explorer to go in and rename Sprint Update apk so that it would temporarily deactivate. Updated prl to the one on sd card through Digirom. Went back in and "reactivated" Sprint update apk. This activated the HFA immediately and promptly updated the profile and prl to the correct one for sprint (since straight talk BYOP uses those) and voila.. voice, mms and internet are now working perfectly. The issue seemed to be that HFA was changing MSL to 0000006503. Simply correcting it was not enough. I had to roll back the prl to make it update correctly. It updated it back to the 2010 that it was before and updated the profile as well. I like Digiblur Rom but decided to go with Paranoid Android rom instead. I'm loving it. May try a 4.4 next. I'm running Kit Kat on my Nexus Tab and I like it. Until this fiasco, I hadn't rooted my Note 2. Forgot how much fun roms can be. Used to play with them all the time on my HTC Evo. See screenshot of my success; unfortunately showing 3g in screenshot. LTE is spotty in my area so at times I'm reduced to 3g inside my home but I'm on wifi at home anyway.

Im happy this worked for you. I believe you have to have an older Android OS to make the trick work. My question is, how can we make this work with a 4.4.2 OS? Much thanks in advance.

My community rom (4.4.2 tw) has the ability to write prl via ##data# then view knot edit).
Sent from my SPH-L900 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Samsung Galaxy S3 (L710)
On both of my L710 (S3), the write PRL option was not showing. So ##data# didnt work for me. I had to install this app:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/32jc7i0w2fa2oxw/PRLWUnhide_S3_MA6.zip/
This made it so I was able to see that function.
Here are a bunch of PRL files. I believe the latest is 25018. If its not listed there, just do a search for the zip file:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35576100
I was able to update the Profile and PRL after writing the TEST.prl file.
However, that didnt seem to solve my problem.
No 3g/4g, with HFA loop, with FreedomPOP as my provider (SPRINT MVNO).
I get a "unable to establish a data connection" error MIP:67 on one of the phones when trying to activate.
On the other phone, I get the notice to call customer care (SPRINT).
I believe this to be an ICCID issue, but I cannot confirm this:
https://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/143514
Pull up your dialer, punch in ##72786#. Let the phone go through its little process, then try to update prl and profile.
I am currently using a sprint note 2 on straight talk, had the same issue, and that's what I did to fix it.

Yeah I tried that yesterday and it didn't work. I believe the Sim lock is called pers265 and I can see where it is under hidden menu but I cant figure out how to set it to off. I'm going to download all your files and roll back my bootloader per your guide and see it it works..fingers crossed. Thx for the reply. I really hope to get it working this has so much potential..I have only made roms for the SMJ700T and the on5 but soon as I get this working with t mobile I will do a port with all sorts of goodies

Unlocked phone... why is my Tethering not unlocked as well?

I've tried the network signal refresher route used with the original pixels, but it isn't working for me. Does anyone know how to get tethering working on a brand new Pixel 2 xl? I'm ok with rooting if it comes to that... but pretty much I just want to get back to the same functionality I had with my Oneplus One.
there are tethering apps you can use, or if you can wait for root (soon I hope) you can edit the build.prop to disable the tethering provision check.

Do you have a tethering app you recommend? Last time I used one there was a ton of chaff in the app store.

Unfortunately I do not, I don't really use tethering all that often so I'm just waiting for root right now
The ones I've tried, haven't been able to get around the limitation. If anyone has one that works, let me know!
what service do you have? T-Mo tethering working fine for me but i know i need a ROM to tether on cricket
Call ATT and add your IMIE to the phone number you are using.
I have an unlocked P2 XL and I had to call them, give them the IMEI(VZW lets you do it yourself online), the girl on the phone entered it, I rebooted and now it works properly.
Only thing I need to figure out now, is how to get WiFi calling to work.

What you talking about?? Adding imei in their system. I put in Verizon sim in phone and get phone service. What does hotspot or tether have to do with this??
Tethering wasn’t working for me on att until I added my imei to my account. Maybe because I am on an unlimited plan...

Is hotspot part of your plan as well?
I think so. We have an Unlimited plan, but we get 10gb of tethering included... my OnePlus 3 had tethering built in that bypassed the plan and tethered Unlimited whether they wanted me to or not.
I'm on cricket, I'm not paying $10/month for tethering I've been able to do for over 3 years when I was on my Oneplus One.
Has anyone else been able to get tethering to work through an app? This is going to be annoying if I need to travel for work. I may have to bring my onePlus one along just for tethering...

Thanks! I wish root would appear faster! I thought since it was Google's phone, the images would be out already.
I guess I don't understand why it isn't tethering.
If you are not on an Unlimited data plan, it should just work, without root. It's illegal for carriers to block tethering when you are on a tiered data plan. The FCC slapped the carriers down and determined that if you pay for 15GB, then it doesn't matter how you use it, you can tether.
If you are on an Unlimited plan, make sure that tethering is included and give AT&T your IMEI and have them add it to your account, have them enable tethering and whatever other features you want, reboot your phone, and it will work.
I literally just went through this with them, and tethering works on my AT&T Unlimited data plan, right through the stock tethering feature... no app, and no root.
If you are trying to tether a laptop you can checkout PdaNet+ in the appstore. Will allow you to tether over USB (preferred) or Bluetooth (painfully slow). I havent found an app that enables wifi tethering without rooting and editing system files as others have mentioned.
I had the same issue on Sprint, and while I get 10GB of tethering included in my "unlimited" plan, it did not work. Once I called Sprint, they did something on their end and the provisioning check worked.

Exactly, you just have to get someone on the phone who knows what they are doing, and get them to add your IMEI to your account to provision the tethering, and then it will work. Many of us have done it.
Rather than wait for root and hope that you can then hack it to get tethering, just pick up the phone and get someone knowledgeable to fix it.
lets put this in a simple way, most carriers DO NOT want you tethering without paying for it. if you are paying for it, then they would normally have an app that does this. if you are trying to do the sneaky "my carrier doesn't need to know how i use my data" way buy editing build.prob and maybe the tethering_dun change, then tell me, why would this be enabled be default. the carriers cant make their extra buck from the same data, so they forbid it. that simple. unlocked phone, does not refer to the carrier restrictions.
this is even more funny when you think people bought the verizon version and complain about a phone not being unlockable, did NOONE learn from the galaxy nexus (for only 3 months before taken off the nexus project) hell. i could not raise my middle finger high enough when i left verizon.

a better thing to say is READ, READ, READ some more. then before you root, READ.
i dont want to sound like an elitist, but this is not something that a person that doesnt not understand the restrictions, the list of edits sometimes needing to be made, and how even with these edits, tethering is still detectable by the traffic. its not like the carrier will not wonder why your android phone is pinging the windows update servers.
the last thing a novice user should have, is a rooted phone. this is why i forbid root on my mother's phone (someone that tampered with the NAT setting on our business router). and still debate on it on my wife's phone.
the whole autoroot thing, and rom toolboxes should not be used by anyone that doesn't know how to do it manually. if you dont know what the -w option is when restoring to stock, you should not be using a toolbox.
