[Q] Backup done, ready for root?

Hi. I backed up my phone using the backup method found here: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/28296/full-backup-of-non-rooted-devices
This method uses CMD and creates an android backup file (.ab) I want to unlock my bootloader and add the custom clockwork recovery. Of course unlocking the bootloader wipes everything. So if i were to restore everything with the .ab file, then do the custom recovey with the superuser thing, would that give me root, and would all of my apps and data be restored as they are right now?
Probably a stupid question, but i want to be completely 100% sure i won't mess up my phone. I know its going to void warranty, which would be a problem if i dropped it of course

It should work yes, you can also backup apps with an app called carbon. Free in the playstore.
Then unlock the bootloader,flash a custom recovery and make a backup of the stock rom in there right away too (needed when you want to go back to full stock for future updates) its called a nandroid backup.
Then root it and restore, or install a brand new custom already rooted rom

If it was a custom rom i chose to install, will it still restore? or would it need to be the original stock for the restore to work properly?

Afaik know you can restore apps on any rom with carbon. Watch out with restoring system data, it can crash the rom.
Because some custom roms have more changes and if you restore system parts it will break the rom. But apps should not be a problem. The most important thing is that you do a nandroid backup of the stock rom. The rest is easy to setup new in the worst case.

Was half expecting an answer like that, i think i will give root stock a go, then probably when HTC stop updating i will be very tempted to give a custom a go.

I have unlocked the bootloader, i think i have flashed the recovery, downloaded nandroid and still says i need root, so i downloaded the superuser thing and when i try to install the binary thing it says there is an error. Anything i can do?
Update: I have learnt Its all good now.

[Q] Make an original state backup

Hello there, I have a HTC Wildfire S I bought last week, I've already unlocked the bootloader, installed the CWM recovery and rooted the phone but I wanted to try new roms but at the same time I do not want to reinstall all my apps from my stock rom so I wanted to know a way of making a backup of the actual rom while keeping the installed apps so I wouldn't have to reinstall them, like going back time.
Yes I've made a backup of the stock rom after I rooted it and yes it is on some place safe.

Use Titanium Backup app to backup all the apps and their data and keep the TitaniumBackup folder from SD card in a safe place and after installing a new ROM, transfer the TitaniumBackup folder into the root of your SD card, install Titanium backup app and then restore apps.

Cwm backups all data in their current state, including applications.
If you're talking about bringing your already installed apps to another Rom,I wouldn't recommend doing it.

Can you confirm if I am understanding "rooting" properly?

So here is what I think I know. I have a Samsung Galaxy s3.
I have successfully rooted and installed cyanogenmod.
I have twrp for a custom recovery.
I have made a nandroid backup. With that if I ever screw anything up I can restore to the exact settings/content of the backup correct?
I have titanium backup pro and have backed up my apps and settings. When a new firmware gets released I boot into custom recovery, wipe my device and install the new firmware and gapps. Can I then restore my titanium backup and get all my apps and settings back? Including the individual app settings and saves? Do I still need to install gapps?

[Q] Helium vs. TWRP

Hello there,
I have just bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 LTE T805 and I am going to root it using the method described in
the thread below
[ROOT]Official CF-Auto-Root By Chainfire. [T-700][T-705][T-800][T805]
But I don't know which one is better for my tablet Helium or TWRP? And where can i find a tutorial on how to install either of them? If there is not a tutorial available, could you please guide me through the whole proccess?
I have read on another thread that I could use an app, by the name Flashify currently available on Play store, but i don't know how to use it and if it is safe to use it with the CF-Auto-Root method mentioned above?
(Lots of people that used this app were pretty happy after using it and without problems too, but i want your experience on the matter)
To tell you the truth :angel: I am a huge fan of TWRP and I would have been very glad if I could use it again on my new tablet also.
(I had it installed on my previous tablet an Asus Transformer Pad and it worked flawlessly).
So to sum it up
Could you please tell me what to do and how to do it in order to backup my tablet before i Root it?
Which one Helium or TWRP is safer to use?

Heluim is to backup your apps/data. Twrp can make an image of your whole os and data so you can restore from bootloops. Installing twrp via flashify is safe with cfautoroot as cfautoroot just flashes root and reverts back to your old recovery. Just download flashify, pick install recovery, then hit twrp and pick twrp 2.8.1.0 and hit yup. Then reboot and youll have twrp. You must cfautoroot first to use flashify.
Dont use twrp 2.8.3.0 as it doesnt work.
I would perfer twrp over heluim becuase its a custom recovery. Not a fan of helium as I use titianuim backup.

I would use TWRP. Basically, root first, then install TWRP via Flashify. Version 2.8.4.0, the latest, works fine. I have used it to both back up and restore and there are no problems. It does have a tendency to enable MTP when you first run it which will throw an error when you do a backup (the error is meaningless and doesn't actually do any harm, but the red type will cause panic, so the first time you go into TWRP hit the mount button and make sure MTP is disabled).
I also use Titanium Backup for backing up and restoring apps and recommend it highly. Between TWRP and TB, I can wipe, install a ROM and restore all my apps in about an hour and the TWRP Nandroid backups mean I can always easily recover if something isn't quite right.:good:

I usually just restore the data partition after installing a new rom instead of using TB then just wipe caches. . I only use TB for backing up and restoring certain apps or data. Doesnt take me anywhere near an hour, using either method.

Nice idea, thanks. In the case of a clean flash, however, which is the only time I'm using TB to restore, I often want to restore only some apps and use things for a while and not everything I was experimenting with before.

[HELP] CM12 based ROM back to Stock Rom or Custom ROM

Good day!
I have been on CM12/CM12.5 and lately, I found out it's not working well for me. It's very buggy. I wanted to go back to either stock rom or one of the custom roms that I have, dr.Ketan v7 or Phoenix ROM 4.3. Is it possible? Can I request for a step by step instruction on how as this is quite new to me? Also, will my back-up (Super Back-up) SMS and Contact back-ups stored on my Internal Storage be erased once I flash the new ROM?

- Download new ROM and copy it to internal storage or sd card.
- Backup.
- Boot to recovery "twrp recommanded".
- Wipe ( Cache / System / Dilvik / Factory reset ).
- Then install zip , choose rom and flash it..
first boot may take minutes.... just wait it will boot..

Dont it need any mj5 stuff? The procedure you mentioned are like the instructions in installing CM custom rom, is it really the same? no need for Odin or something? thanks!

If you have TWRP recovery installed in your phone no need for Odin. You can download a flashable zip to phone and flash it using the twrp. Also I would suggest you to backup your sms and contacts. Infact do a full nandroid backup with twrp so if anything goes wrong you can go back to you last working state.

wow! great to know. I think that this will be easier. if I'll be making a full nandroid back-up, does it cover the SMS and contact? then i'll store it on my external SD card? or is it safe to store on my internal memory just like how my Super Back-up app works?
I know that this is a bit off-topic but, what's the best/recommended ROM for Note 2 outside CM?

Yes it will cover SMS and contacts and I would recommend you store it on your SD card. I had tried DN4 rom which I liked, it had features like Note 4. Now I am also looking for another rom to try, will let you know once I do.

sorry, will it also cover my files on my gallery? Would it also be redundant if I make a Titanium Pro back-up for my user app data then do a full nandroid back-up through TWRP Recovery mode? Thanks for accomodating all my questions! I'll look for the DN4 rom that you're referring to.

Depends on options you choose while doing nandroid backups, from twrp you can backup system, data, boot, efs, storage (internal, external). If your gallery is on internal storage then do backup internal storage as well. But since you plan to install a different rom backup you gallery, sms, contacts and other important files elsewhere may be on a computer so later on you can copy it back.
Remember nandroid backup is complete backup of your phone current state including the rom & settings while Titanium is individual backup for apps. So when you have a new rom you might want to restore individual app data from Titanium. Nandroid is for scenarios where you device becomes unusable or you don't like the new rom so you can easily go back to last rom & settings.

Thank you very much! will try your inputs! Appreciate everything. Now I'm torn between leaving CM12.1 to DN4 or stay for a while. Hope I could also figure out my daily driver.

Hi I successfuly flashed the DN4 rom from CM 12.1, however I tried to restore some files from my Nandroid back-up. however, when I tried to restore everything including data and system, it removed my ROM. what should be selected to be restore if I just want to restore my phone settings and SMS and contacts?

Did you make a backup of sms and contacts using Titanium? If yes you can try restoring from it. Also if you have Titanium pro you can open the nandroid backup and choose selective things to restore but better and quick is to restore your Titanium backup.
Note, as mentioned in earlier if you restore complete nandroid backup it will return your phone to last ROM state.
